Bears | Roy Williams leads team in receiving in Week 16    Mon Dec 26, 12:13 AM

Chicago Bears WR Roy Williams posted team-highs with six receptions and 81 yards in the Week 16 loss against the Green Bay Packers. The yardage total was easily a season high, besting his 62-yard output in Week 11 against the San Diego Chargers. Williams came in with just six grab for 68 yards in four games since that performance against the Chargers.

Footballguys view: Williams is producing more because of Johnny Knox being out for the season than anything else. He is worth a desperation play against the Vikings woeful secondary, but his days of fantasy relevance are basically behind Williams now.

Bears | Roy Williams upset with Sam Hurd     Fri Dec 16, 09:29 AM

Chicago Bears WR Roy Williams said he is upset and disappointed over WR Sam Hurd's arrest on federal drug charges. 'This is just very shocking to me,' Williams said. 'And I'm kind of pissed off at him, too, because it's a really selfish act. He has let us down in the wide receiver group, in which we were so close. He let down the wide receivers coach, the head coach, the Bears organization and the city. But that's my boy, too.'

Chicago Bears WR Roy Williams led the team with four receptions for 59 yards and a touchdown in Week 7. That gives him eight receptions for 109 yards in the last two games.

Footballguys view: Williams is staying healthy and getting back up to speed in the Mike Martz offense. His production is trending up but we can't recommend him as anything more than a WR3 on most weeks.

Bears | Roy Williams regains stronghold on job    Tue Oct 18, 09:54 PM

Chicago Bears WR Roy Williams has regained his starting spot at wide receiver after a slow start. He had three catches for 50 yards in the Week 6 win against the Minnesota Vikings, including two grabs for first downs.

Footballguys view: More Martz Madness as the Bears seem to favor Williams because of his size. This does help Devin Hester, as the absence of Johnny Knox in the starting lineup will give him more of the deep routes.

Bears | Roy Williams in danger of losing starting job    Thu Aug 25, 01:32 AM

Chicago Bears WR Roy Williams is in danger of losing his starting job if he doesn't show improvement soon, according to receivers coach Darryl Drake. 'I understand that Roy's got some things to do, as far as getting in shape, but that's not my fault, and that's not my concern,' Drake said. 'My concern is making sure, when we play Atlanta (in Week 1), we got the best guys out there, that is going to give us the best chance to win. And if (WR Johnny Knox) is that guy, then he needs to be out there.'

Footballguys view: The bigger story was that Williams was in danger of starting a few weeks ago. Johnny Knox has had a good camp and preseason and those that stuck by him in fantasy leagues should be rewarded.

Bears | Roy Williams not in shape     Thu Aug 18, 10:45 AM

Chicago Bears WR Roy Williams admits that he is still not in football shape at this point in training camp, and that has been increasingly apparent watching Williams go through practice at sometimes less than peak speed. Williams acknowledged that the biggest thing for him to work on at this point is 'my conditioning. Getting my wind right. You have to be able to run in this offense. Run all day long.'

Footballguys view: Williams had the best season of his career under Mike Martz when the two were together in Detroit. He knows what it takes to be successful in that offense, and should get himself into better shape by the start of the regular season.

Bears | Johnny Knox needs to improve    Mon Aug 8, 04:57 PM

Continuing previous reports, Chicago Bears WR Johnny Knox will compete with WR Roy Williams for the starting job at split end. Wide receivers coach Darryl Drake said Knox has 'to improve' this year, but did not provide any specific details on what Knox needs to work on. Knox led the league in most interceptions on passes intended to a wide receiver (11).

Footballguys view: We'll provide details. Knox wasn't always in the right place at the right time and he didn't compete well for balls in the air. He was fine when he was wide open, and his speed and quicks can get him open, but when it came down to being physical, Knox was overwhelmed by more aggressive corners.

Bears | Johnny Knox, Roy Williams to compete for job    Sun Aug 7, 11:58 AM

Chicago Bears wide receivers Darryl Drake said WRs Johnny Knox and Roy Williams will be competing for the starting split end position during preseason.

Footballguys view: Whether or not Knox holds off Williams, it is clear that the Bears don't see him as their best receiver, even though he had the best fantasy numbers last year. Knox was responsible for multiple interceptions and generally did not compete well for the ball in flight. Even if Knox starts, expect Williams to play a large role and cap Knox's value this year.

Bears | Roy Williams happy to be back with Mike Martz    Sun Jul 31, 01:35 PM

Chicago Bears WR Roy Williams said joining the Bears was an easy decision for him, as he is reunited with offensive coordinator Mike Martz and wide receivers coach Darryl Drake. 'To be back with Martz and coach Drake, it's a blessing for me to go to a system I already know that I've had success in,' Williams said.

Footballguys view: Reunited and it feels so good! Williams should be happy for the connection because he had his best year as a pro under Martz when they were together in Detroit.

Bears | Hoping Roy Williams can resurrect career    Sat Jul 30, 02:06 AM

Chicago Bears head coach Lovie Smith hopes newly added WR Roy Williams will be able to turn his career around now that he is in the Windy City. Smith said Williams is a great talent, noting he is big, can block and they believe he can win one-on-one battles with defenders. 'I think we've had some success with some players that it didn't work out somewhere else. Then they come here and finish up strong,' Smith said of Williams.

Footballguys view: Williams has to find the edge he seemed to lose in Detroit and Dallas. He flashed early last season in games with Tony Romo, so perhaps he could play a role in the Chicago pass offense this season. It's not even impossible that he starts, but it would be highly unlikely that beats out Earl Bennett in training camp.

Bears | Roy Williams reunited with Mike Martz    Fri Jul 29, 07:23 AM

With the Chicago Bears acquiring WR Roy Williams, the team reunites Williams with former offensive coordinator Mike Martz and gives QB Jay Cutler a bigger (6-3, 215 pounds) target in the passing game. Williams, who has had a tumultuous career, had his best season (82-1,310-7) under Martz while the two were in Detroit in 2006.

The Chicago Bears are interested in adding free-agent WR Roy Williams (Cowboys), who was cut by the Dallas Cowboys Thursday, July 28. Williams played in offensive coordinator Mike Martz's system with the Detroit Lions and Williams has ties to receivers coach Darryl Drake.

Cowboys | Roy Williams to be cut    Tue Jul 26, 02:34 PM

The Dallas Cowboys have told WR Roy Williams that he will be released this week.

Footballguys view: The Cowboys have a good young group of receivers behind Williams and now they will need them to elevate their game. Williams was simply too pricey for the Cowboys to keep around this year as they try to clear cap space. Several teams should be interested in Williams on the open market. We think the Bears, Jaguars, and Raiders could express interest in the veteran receiver.

Cowboys | Unlikely to get restructured deal with Roy Williams    Thu Jul 7, 01:41 PM

The Dallas Cowboys likely will not be able to agree on a restructured contract with WR Roy Williams and is expected to release him once the lockout is over.

Footballguys view: Williams actually flashed a little of old Roy that was a fantasy factor with the Lions earlier in his career, so if he lands in a good passing offense, we'll keep him on waiver wire watch. His likely departure will give more opportunity to youngsters like Kevin Ogletree and Dwayne Harris.

Cowboys | Appears that Roy Williams will be released    Sun Jul 3, 02:54 PM

The Dallas Cowboys likely will look to release WR Roy Williams once the lockout is over because of the money he makes and that the team wants to give WR Dez Bryant more playing time.

Footballguys view: This contradicts an earlier report that stated the team could keep Williams around as veteran insurance behind Bryant and Miles Austin. Williams is due to make $5.1 million this year and could be too expensive to keep around in a backup role.
