Chargers | Unlikely to pursue Ricky Williams     Sat Mar 31, 09:18 AM

Updating a previous item, retired RB Ricky Williams said that he would consider coming out of retirement to play for his hometown San Diego Chargers. The Chargers, however, have not pursued Williams. It is also unlikely that general manager A.J. Smith would give up a draft pick to the Baltimore Ravens, who own the rights to Williams.

NFL | Ricky Williams not ruling out return    Wed Feb 8, 03:34 PM

Retired NFL RB Ricky Williams is not ruling out a return to the league because he is not sure how he will feel in the future. 'The easy answer is I've moved on. But the thing I've learned about myself is, who the hell knows?,' Williams said.

Ravens | Ricky Williams to retire    Tue Feb 7, 01:33 PM

Baltimore Ravens RB Ricky Williams plans to retire from professional football.

Footballguys view: Williams has been known to change his mind, so this may not be the end as he could return to the Ravens later in the offseason. If he's truly retired then it caps off a career with twists and turns we don't normally see in star NFL players. Without Williams the Ravens will be in the market for a RB to backup Ray Rice.

Ravens | Ricky Williams posts 76 yards, TD    Sun Dec 4, 08:52 PM

Baltimore Ravens RB Ricky Williams had season-highs with 16 carries, 76 yards and a touchdown in Week 13 against the Cleveland Browns. The score was just the second of the season for Williams.

Footballguys view: Williams gets the Browns again in week 16, and he should also be flexworthy next week vs. the Colts. Isaac Redman gets the "strong #2 RB who can put up numbers vs. the Cleveland run defense" role next week.

Ravens | OC to ride Ray Rice until he is tired    Wed Aug 24, 12:19 AM

Baltimore Ravens offensive coordinator Cam Cameron said Tuesday, Aug. 23, that the plan for now is to allow RB Ray Rice to keep running until he gets tired. When that happens, he's supposed to let Cameron know and RB Ricky Williams will come in. 'We will leave a lot of it up to (Ray) and we will be smart too because we want Ray full speed at the end of games,' Cameron said.

Footballguys view: Sounds good to us. Rice is in a strong top three or four overall RBs and any of them are justified as #1 picks.

Baltimore Ravens RB Ricky Williams passed his physical Tuesday, Aug. 9, and is practice with his new team. He is expected to be the backup running back to RB Ray Rice.

Footballguys view: The arrival of Williams takes the shine off Jalen Parmele as a handcuff for Rice owners. Williams isn't the same player he used to be but should be a more than adequate backup and role player for the team.

Ravens | Ricky Williams contract update    Mon Aug 8, 01:49 PM

Updating a previous report, the Baltimore Ravens signed RB Ricky Williams to a two-year deal worth as much as $4 million.

Ravens | Ricky Williams agrees to terms     Mon Aug 8, 01:23 PM

The Baltimore Ravens have agreed to terms with free-agent RB Ricky Williams (Dolphins). Terms of the contract were not disclosed.

NFL | Ricky Williams in no rush to sign    Thu Aug 4, 10:43 AM

The agent for free-agent RB Ricky Williams (Dolphins), Drew Rosenhaus, said during a radio interview that Williams might wait for an injury at tailback before signing with a team.

Footballguys view: Williams still has something left in the tank and could give some team valuable veteran depth. Injuries will strike during camp and preseason games, which will open the door for Williams.

Dolphins | Ricky Williams says he won't be back    Wed Jul 20, 02:08 AM

Free-agent RB Ricky Williams (Dolphins) announced in a YouTube yoga video that he is 'preparing to go to a new team and finish my career.'

Footballguys view: Williams is just bench fodder for an NFL team at this late stage of his career. If he ends up getting the call for increased touches because of injuries ahead of him on the depth chart, he might still have value, but no one is going to sign him to be a major part of their gameplan at running back.

Patriots | Could show interest in Ricky Williams     Sun Jul 3, 01:29 PM

The New England Patriots could show interest in Miami Dolphins impending free-agent RB Ricky Williams once free agency begins.

Footballguys view: Bill Belichick has taken chances on veteran RBs with questions marks before, but this move doesn't make a lot of sense. The Pats backfield is already jam packed with talent. Danny Woodhead is a great change of pace back who is effective as a receiver out of the backfield. BenJarvus Green-Ellis is a grinder who can wear down a defense as the game goes on. Rookie Stevan Ridley is a strong inside runner who should be a short-yardage and goalline specialist. Fellow rookie Shane Vereen is the team's best all-purpose back and it wouldn't surprise us if he led the team in rushing this year. Simply put, there's no room for Williams on the roster.

Dolphins | Ricky Williams looking forward to free agency    Fri Jul 1, 10:51 AM

Miami Dolphins RB Ricky Williams said he is looking forward to free agency because it is something he has been waiting for, he said, recently, since 1999 - and he's anxious to find which teams might suit him, and vice versa, on the open market. However, Williams added he would still like to remain in Miami. 'I mean, really, I have no idea. I feel like I'm in a good position. I feel like if I stay here, it'll be good for me, it'll be good for my family,' Williams said. 'I feel like if I go somewhere else, it'll be good - it'll be good for my family. So you know, I think in my position I think the extended off-season has been good for me because I've been waiting since 1999 to be a free agent. So it's been nice to enjoy these past couple months and the fun part, when we see who's offering what and what's the best situation for me, I'm looking forward to it and I think it's going to be a good experience.'

Footballguys view: Williams could draw some interest on the free agent market, but we don't think a ton of teams will be hot to sign him. He's likely to stick around in Miami and complement rookie Daniel Thomas.

Dolphins | Would keep Ricky Williams over Ronnie Brown    Thu Jun 30, 09:46 AM

The Miami Dolphins are ready to move on from RBs Ricky Williams and Ronnie Brown. However, Williams has a better chance of returning because he can still make stretch runs.

Footballguys view: This has been the popular sentiment for quite some time now. Williams seems content to stay with the team while Brown has stated he wants to play for a winner. They'll explore other free agent options like Darren Sproles or Ahmad Bradshaw but always have Williams as a fall back plan.

Miami Dolphins impending free-agent RB Ricky Williams said he would like to finish his career with the Miami Dolphins. 'I'd love nothing more than to finish my career winning a Super Bowl with the Dolphins,' Williams wrote on his Twitter account. 'But that's gonna take some cooperation from others.'

Footballguys view: The Dolphins could end up choosing to keep either Williams or Ronnie Brown. However, there is a chance they don't bring either one back. We could see them being in the market for a guy like Darren Sproles to play in a change of pace role behind Daniel Thomas.

Footballguys view: The Dolphins may keep either Williams or Ronnie Brown to play behind rookie RB Daniel Thomas, but they're not going to keep both. Williams still has some gas left in the tank and could give a team a valuable veteran backup.

The Miami Dolphins would be willing to re-sign impending free-agent RB Ricky Williams this offseason if it is for the right price.

Dolphins | Rookie RB Thomas to be starter?    Tue May 3, 11:21 AM

Ben Volin, from the Palm Beach Post, reports rookie RB Daniel Thomas could be the Dolphins feature back with Ronnie Brown, Ricky Williams, and Patrick Cobbs set to become unrestricted free agents. "I feel like I play fast," Thomas said. "I'm a guy that can keep the chains moving, the guy that can also go out of the backfield and catch routes. I can run between the tackles, go outside, whatever they may need me to do."

Footballguys view: Thomas is a big back who reminds many in the scouting community of Raiders RB Michael Bush. The converted quarterback is swift and tough to bring down when he builds a head of steam. He is also a good receiver out of the backfield. We think Thomas could produce as a high end RB3 for your fantasy team.

Dolphins | Mark Ingram on radar?    Mon Apr 18, 06:00 PM

University of Alabama RB Mark Ingram could be an option for the Miami Dolphins in the first round of the upcoming NFL Draft, reports Tom Pedulla, of USA Today. The Dolphins, who pick 15th overall, could find Ingram as a compelling option because running backs Ronnie Brown and Ricky Williams are scheduled to become free agents when the NFL returns to action. Ingram's desire is to be an every-down back in the NFL and said he will do whatever it takes to get the job done at the next level.

Footballguys view: #15 seems a little high for Ingram if the talk about his knee having a potentially degenerative condition are true. Miami could use a new starting RB, but they will have other options and would forgo having a shot at a top second tier QB if they take Ingram in the first.

Dolphins | Ricky Williams might return in 2011    Tue Jan 25, 10:51 PM

Miami Dolphins RB Ricky Williams acknowledged he might return in 2011 to play one more season, reports Steve Svekis, of the South Florida Sun-Sentinel. 'I'm excited,' Williams said Tuesday, Jan. 25. 'I'm excited about it. I think, coming into the season, I had a lot of questions about my future about whether my body, whether my mind could take another season. But I'm the kind of guy where I'm always trying to figure things out, always try to learn more. And I think this past year, I got a good idea of the right formula for me to stay healthy, to stay happy and to stay successful. And if I can do those things, I want to keep playing this game.'

Footballguys view: Our very own Cecil Lammey recently talked to Dolphins beat writer Omar Kelly, and the feeling is that the Dolphins will choose to keep either Williams or Ronnie Brown around next year. We feel like Williams is the better choice here.

'I mean, he's had a couple of knockouts, but they've been nonlegal. I'll just put it as that.' Dolphins head coach Tony Sparano was told about Cunningham's comments and was asked whether he has gotten complaints from other teams about Williams making crackback blocks. 'No ...   Dolphins | Not interested in a long-term deal for Brown    Sun Jun 20, 07:05 PM

Dan Parr, from ProFootballWeekly.com, reports Dolphins RB Ronnie Brown has yet to sign his restricted free-agent tender, but he has been attending the team's offseason practices and said he won't hold out of training camp. Unlike other unsigned restricted free agents, Brown didn't risk taking a pay cut by refusing to sign his tender before June 15. Teams could have lowered tender offers to 110 percent of a player's 2009 salary on June 15. Brown's tender offer is already 110 percent of his '09 salary ($3.97 million), however. Brown wants a long-term commitment from Miami, but the Dolphins aren't interested in locking up the 28-year-old beyond 2010. The team could use the franchise tag on Brown after this season if it so chooses. Brown is recovering from surgery to repair a Lisfranc fracture and could help his cause by staying healthy in 2010. He has played in nine games or fewer in two of the past three seasons because of injuries.

Footballguys view: The Dolphins are concerned with Brown's long-term durability as he seems to get banged up quite often. Brown and Ricky Williams should split carries and receptions out of the backfield once again in 2010.

Dolphins | Will use Cobbs more this year    Sat Jun 5, 07:40 PM

CBSSports.com reports that the Dolphins are glad to have RB Patrick Cobbs (ACL) back after he was injured in 2009, and they have big plans for him in 2010 - as a running back, Wildcat option, return specialist and gunner on special teams. "I have every reason to believe that he would make the full comeback and we would be able to give him all of his jobs just because of the guy, really," coach Tony Sparano said. "And as far as how much I've missed him, I think we've always said this during the season, but we missed this guy a lot."

Footballguys view: Cobbs has shown big play capability throughout his career, but struggles to stay healthy. If he can stay injury free the Dolphins could use him in the RB rotation with Ronnie Brown and Ricky Williams.

Dolphins | RB Brown 'a little ahead' in comeback    Sun May 30, 02:41 PM

The South Florida Sun-Sentinel reports that Dolphins RB Ronnie Brown is doing well in his return from surgery on his right foot after suffering a Lisfranc fracture more than six months ago. He said Friday he is 80 percent recovered. "I think I'm a little ahead," Brown said. "The foot feels pretty good. It's real exciting." He still has surgical screws inside his foot, but he is running. He has been fully participating in team conditioning that started back up in late March. All that's left for Brown is to receive full clearance from Dolphins trainers, something he expects to happen in time for the start of training camp around Aug. 1. Even if he misses the first part of training camp, Brown says he "definitely" will be ready for the regular-season opener at Buffalo in September. "He's doing really well," Dolphins coach Tony Sparano says. "I think every day when he gets to get out here on the grass, he feels pretty good about it."

Dolphins | RB Brown admits he's not 100% and still has soreness    Sun May 23, 03:35 PM

Armando Salguero, from the Miami Herald, reports Dolphins RB Ronnie Brown isn't 100 percent. And Brown added he sometimes still has soreness in the foot. But the healing process is going well. ``It's good,'' Brown said. ``The last couple of days, I've been out there, and I've been in the offseason program, so I'm steadily making progress. If I continue to make this kind of progress, it will be pretty good for the season.'' Brown doesn't rule out being completely healthy by the time training camp begins in late July. ``Definitely not,'' he said. ``I've been getting better on a weekly and daily basis. I've come a long way. In the offseason program, I started running. And how long has it been, eight, nine weeks into the offseason, and now we've started the OTAs, and I'm out here. There are positives. And I look forward to making progress every time we have something as a team, I'm trying to do something. I'm optimistic.''

Footballguys view: The Dolphins offense starts with a strong ground game featuring Ronnie Brown and Ricky Williams. If both backs can stay healthy they should see plenty of action this year even though the Dolphins acquired Brandon Marshall from the Denver Broncos.

Dolphins | RB Brown 'doing pretty well'    Sat May 8, 09:33 PM

CBSSports.com reports Dolphins RB Ronnie Brown's fractured foot is on the mend, but it's not known how much he is able to do in the offseason program. He did not participate in team activities at the team's recent minicamp. "We will see. He's doing pretty well," coach Tony Sparano said. Brown was placed on injured reserve in November with a Lisfranc fracture in his right foot.

Footballguys view: Miami's running back situation is cloudy in May, but could get clearer as we get closer to the regular season. Ronnie Brown and Ricky Williams should form the RBBC for the Dolphins once again this year, but both have had trouble staying healthy. If one/both were to go down with an injury then we would see more of Lex Hilliard and Patrick Cobbs.

Dolphins | Would be comfortable with Hilliard as starter    Sat Jan 2, 11:35 AM

Brian Biggane, of the Palm Beach Post, reports Miami Dolphins head coach Tony Sparano said he has reached a point with RB Lex Hilliard that if he is the best option to start for the team in Week 17, it's not a problem. 'The progression with Lex the last couple weeks has been really good,' Sparano said. 'I feel really comfortable with Lex. It's been good we've been able to see him that way.' RB Ricky Williams (shoulder) remains questionable for Week 17.

Footballguys view: Lex Hilliard is the big power back from Montana, but he's not just a one-dimensional player. Hilliard has good acceleration and is hard to bring down when he gets a head of steam. He is also a capable receiver out of the backfield, and can break through arm tackles in the open field.
