Lions | WR Williams needs huge camp to make team    Tue May 31, 01:11 PM

Tim Twentyman, from the Detroit News, reports Lions third-year WR Derrick Williams needs to perform big in training camp if he wants to make the team as the fourth receiver. Twentyman believes the team will only keep four wideouts on the active roster. "Hopefully, when I get my opportunities, I can capitalize on them," he said. "I just hope I get those opportunities to show what I can do."

Footballguys view: Williams never lived up to his potential at Penn State either. He was the number one player coming out of high school but didn't make much of an impact in college as a Defensive Back or Wide Receiver. His pro career has been set back by injuries and inconsistencies to this point. He'll have to compete with veteran Bryant Johnson for the fourth spot on the depth chart during training camp.

Lions | WR Williams in 2 battles    Sun May 30, 03:27 PM

CBSSports.com reports Lions second-year WR Derrick Williams is involved in two battles heading into training camp: Not only is he competing with veteran Dennis Northcutt for the kick-return job, but he's also vying with WR Bryant Johnson for the No. 3 role behind Calvin Johnson and Nate Burleson. Williams has shown excellent speed in drills for both positions, though he seems ahead of Northcutt and behind Johnson.

Footballguys view: Williams was the best player coming out of high school when he went to Penn State. He never lived up to his potential for the Nittany Lions, but still has high upside because of his physical ability. We'll see if he can finally play up to his potential in the pros.

Lions | Johnson to hold on to #3 role?    Sun May 30, 03:23 PM

CBSSports.com reports the battle for the third and fourth WR spots will be an interesting one between WRs Bryant Johnson and Derrick Williams in Lions camp. Johnson is lining up in three-WR sets with the first team and has the better hands. He splits time with Williams, who shows excellent speed.

Footballguys view: Johnson is the savvy veteran, and should hold onto the job to start the season. Derrick Williams is a much better athlete with a high ceiling. If he starts to play up to his potential then it would move Johnson down the depth chart.

Lions | Williams will be #4 WR    Thu Sep 3, 09:32 PM

Brian VanOchten, of the Grand Rapids Press, reports that third-round pick Derrick Williams will be the Lions #4 WR despite the fact that he has shown the same tendency to drop passes that he did in college at Penn State.

Lions | Rookie Williams a disappointment so far    Wed Aug 26, 11:41 AM

Tom Kowalski, from MLive.com, reports rookie wide receiver Derrick Williams hasn't showed much flash, either as a returner or a receiver. He'll make the team and he'll get his opportunities to make a contribution on special teams but, overall, he's a been something of a disappointment so far.

Footballguys view: Williams never lived up to the hype surrounding him after entering Penn State as the #1 high school player in the country. He is still somewhat raw as a receiver and doesn't look confident as a returner. Williams is very gifted athletically, and it's certainly too soon to call him a bust. If you want to get a rookie from Penn State on your fantasy roster, then we seriously recommend WR Deon Butler. He is currently third on the depth chart in Seattle, but could move his way up the depth chart before the end of the regular season. Butler makes a perfect pick when you're near the end of the draft and looking for upside at your backup WR position.

Lions | Rookie Williams making plays    Sat Aug 8, 12:47 PM

Tim Twentyman, from the Detroit News, reports that one guy making the most of opportunities presented to him is rookie receiver Derrick Williams. Williams, the Lions' third-round draft pick out of Penn State, showed flashes of good play Friday after a slow, seemingly inconspicuous start to camp. With receivers Bryant Johnson, Dennis Northcutt and John Standeford missing Friday's morning practice because of injuries, Williams got more reps and more chances to make plays.

Footballguys view: It's great to see Williams making the most of his opportunity because he hasn't had the best minicamp or training camp up to this point. Williams is an intriguing prospect as his physical talent is obvious. However, it's always been a waiting game with Williams because he's never truly lived up to his potential. We'll see if he can finally be the player many people expected when he was the #1 player in the country coming out of high school several years ago.
