The Miami Dolphins added big-ticket free-agents LBs Dannell Ellerbe and Philip Wheeler during the offseason, and they really made their presences felt in the Week 2 win against the Indianapolis Colts. Ellerbe posted 14 tackles in the game, while Wheeler had 1, including a sack to end the final drive for Indianapolis. 'Their play speed has been good, blitzing has been good,' head coach Joe Philbin said Monday, Sept. 16. 'They're aggressive. They're off to good starts.'

Miami Dolphins general manager Jeff Ireland explained Sunday, June 2, why the team replaced LBs Karlos Dansby (Cardinals) and Kevin Burnett (Raiders) with LBs Dannell Ellerbe and Philip Wheeler. 'Really fell in love with the two players we got. Nothing against Karlos and Kevin. They're very good players,' Ireland said. '(But) I felt like this gives us a chance to get a little bit faster, a little bit more physical at the point of attack. Like their style of play.'

Miami Dolphins head coach Joe Philbin said the team was looking to add faster linebackers to their defense, which is why they released LBs Karlos Dansby and Kevin Burnett and added Dannell Ellerbe, Philip Wheeler and Jelani Jenkins. Philbin said the team wanted linebackers that could cover pass catchers man-to-man and blitz effectively because the NFL is becoming a passing league.
