Former Houston Texans offensive assistant Wes Welker is being hired by the San Francisco 49ers Tuesday, Feb. 5, as their new wide receivers coach.

Footballguys view: Welker gets a promotion with this move to the West Coast. He was an offensive assistant for the Texans over the last two years. Welker gets to work with some young wideouts in San Francisco, including guys like Dante Pettis.

Broncos | Denver had interest in Wes Welker    Sun Feb 4, 12:16 PM

The Denver Broncos requested permission to interview Houston Texans assistant coach Wes Welker for their wide receivers coaching position, but the Texans denied the request. The Broncos hired Zach Azzanni as their receivers coach.

Footballguys view: Azzanni's claim to fame is that he was Antonio Brown's wide receiver coach at Central Michigan. Welker appears to be yet another acorn from the Belichick tree that is beginning to grow.

Texans | Houston announces several staff changes    Mon Jan 30, 07:35 PM

Updating a previous report, the Houston Texans have hired former NFL WR Wes Welker as an offensive/special teams assistant and former Los Angeles Chargers assistant coach Bobby King as their linebackers coach. Wide receivers coach Sean Ryan has been named the quarterbacks coach, Tight ends coach John Perry has been named the wide receivers coach and assistant Tim Kelly has been named the tight ends coach.

Footballguys view: The Texans coaching staff has been shaken up even though there are few new names. The team made the playoffs again this year, and even won a playoff game, but after firing offensive coordinator George Godsey earlier this month, it was clear that they wanted change on the offensive side of the ball.

Texans | Houston expected to hire Wes Welker    Mon Jan 30, 06:48 PM

Former NFL WR Wes Welker is expected to join the Houston Texans coaching staff as an offensive assistant.

Footballguys view: Welker has five years in New England with head coach Bill O'Brien under his belt, and he could help ultra-athletic slot receiver and QB convert Braxton Miller with his transition to wide receiver.

NFL | Wes Welker not retired yet    Sat Jul 23, 09:57 AM

Free-agent WR Wes Welker (Rams) said he is not retired at this point but is not sure what his next step will be.

Footballguys view: Welker has a dream of playing again...but we think he's done. Concussion problems have plagued him in recent years, and he needs to think about his long-term health.

Dolphins | Wes Welker could play again    Tue Jul 12, 07:55 PM

Free-agent WR Wes Welker (Rams) said there is a small percentage that he could play in the NFL again, but it would have to be the right situation and team. He would need just two to three weeks to get ready.

Footballguys view: We can't imagine Welker playing again. Injuries, specifically concussions, are a huge concern with the veteran wideout. Add in the fact that he's not quite what he once was, and you can see why we think Welker's days in the NFL are done.

Dolphins | Wes Welker at Miami's OTAs    Mon Jun 6, 06:53 PM

Free-agent WR Wes Welker (Rams) attended the Miami Dolphins' organized team activities Monday, June 6, but head coach Adam Gase said the team is not looking to sign Welker.

Footballguys view: Welker is likely done playing in the NFL. His playing career was shortened by concussion problems he had with the Broncos. During his time in Denver, Welker worked well in the Gase system. Gase said Welker is familiar with his offense and could help the receivers on the roster.

NFL | Wes Welker undecided about playing    Thu May 26, 09:59 AM

Free-agent WR Wes Welker (Rams) said he's still weighing his options and hasn't decided if he'll play in 2016.

Footballguys view: Welker has had a lot of concussions and we would rather see him healthy and with a good quality of life down the road than another 20 catches. It's good he's taking his time with a critical decision, but we think he's better off hanging up the cleats for good.

Rams | Wes Welker uncertain for Week 10    Thu Nov 12, 01:50 AM

St. Louis Rams WR Wes Welker is practicing, but head coach Jeff Fisher said Wednesday, Nov. 11, that it will probably be a Saturday night or Sunday morning decision on whether Welker makes his debut in the Week 10 game against the Chicago Bears.

Footballguys view: We're still very concerned about Welker's long-term health and remain a bit surprised he was cleared by someone to play given his history. Still, there are some who say he's no more at risk for more concussions than someone with just one, so hopefully he can stay healthy. We wouldn't expect him to have much of an impact even if he is active so stay away.

Rams | Wes Welker could be third-down fix    Wed Nov 11, 12:53 PM

St. Louis Rams WR Wes Welker figures to help out a Rams offense that has a league-worst 23.8% conversion rate on third downs, according to head coach Jeff Fisher. Welker has spent extra time with Rams coaches and QB Nick Foles learning the playbook. 'Obviously, terminology is a little bit different,' Welker said. 'But there's a lot of similarities to some things that I've done in the past. I'm really just trying to get on the same page of how the coaches want me to do it here and everything like that.' The team wouldn't confirm whether Welker will play in Week 10 against the Chicago Bears. Welker, who has been training in Florida, said he has no concerns concussion-wise about taking the field again.

Free-agent WR Wes Welker (Broncos) agreed to terms on a one-year deal with the St. Louis Rams Monday, Nov. 9, according to sources. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: With Stedman Bailey suspended four games, the Rams needed to add wide receiver talent. Welker is super quick, and he can work the underneath routes. However, concussions have become a serious problem for him and we'll have to see if he can stand up to the NFL beating anymore.

Free-agent WRs Wes Welker (Broncos), Hakeem Nicks (Titans) and Vincent Brown (Colts) are expected to work out for the St. Louis Rams Monday, Nov. 9.

Giants | Wes Welker impressive during workout    Thu Oct 1, 01:01 PM

Free-agent WR Wes Welker (Broncos) was 'quick' and impressive during his workout with the New York Giants earlier this week, according to head coach Tom Coughlin. Coughlin said Welker is healthy and could be signed.

Footballguys view: With Victor Cruz out for the foreseeable future, the Giants are in dire need of receiver talent. Welker is intriguing but is a concussion risk, something which would put a ceiling on his fantasy value if he signs.

Patriots | Wes Welker unlikely to Pats    Sat Jun 6, 07:23 PM

Free-agent WR Wes Welker (Broncos) is unlikely to sign with the New England Patriots unless WRs Julian Edelman or Danny Amendola were injured.

Footballguys view: Welker's best days are behind him, and that's why he's not getting much interest on the open market. The concussion problems he had in Denver will also give teams pause when considering the veteran receiver. He may have to wait until the start of the season to find a new home, but it's also possible that his playing days are done.

Patriots | Wes Welker open to Pats return    Tue Jun 2, 12:35 PM

Free-agent WR Wes Welker (Broncos) said he would be open to returning to the New England Patriots.

Footballguys view: Tom Brady would love that, but Welker is not the same player he used to be. The Patriots already seem set with guys like Julian Edelman and Danny Amendola. Concussion problems slowed Welker down during his time with the Broncos, and the interest in him on the open market has been minimal at best.

NFL | Wes Welker cleared to play    Thu Apr 30, 01:33 PM

Free-agent WR Wes Welker (Broncos) has been cleared to continue his playing career by one of the top concussion doctors. Welker said he did well in all of the tests during his visit with the doctor. Welker is working out in Florida and waiting to sign with a team.

Footballguys view: He might be cleared to play but everyone will be a bit wary of his concussion history. Fantasy owners should be as well and steer clear if he does play somewhere.

Dolphins | Wes Welker even less likely for MIA    Wed Apr 22, 08:58 PM

Free agent WR Wes Welker (Broncos) is considered even less likely to sign with the Miami Dolphins, after Miami reportedly signed WR Greg Jennings to a two-year deal Wednesday, April 22.

Footballguys view: Welker just isn't getting much interest on the open market. We could see him wait until after training camp injuries hit before he finds a new team. Welker isn't the player he used to be and concussion problems plagued him during his two-year stint with the Broncos.

Dolphins | Wes Welker leaves without deal    Wed Apr 8, 07:37 PM

Free-agent WR Wes Welker (Broncos) left his visit with the Miami Dolphins Wednesday, April 8, without a deal.

Dolphins | Wes Welker visiting Miami    Wed Apr 8, 09:37 AM

Free-agent WR Wes Welker (Broncos) is visiting with the Miami Dolphins Wednesday, April 8.

Footballguys view: The Dolphins are looking for a veteran wideout behind Jarvis Landry and Kenny Stills. Welker played in Miami for two years to start his pro career (after the Chargers cut him loose). Concussions have slowed him down over the last year and a half, but he can still run a crisp route and get open underneath.

NFL | Wes Welker not popular in free agency    Tue Mar 17, 11:51 PM

Free-agent WR Wes Welker (Broncos) is generating very little buzz on the open market, according to a league source. The lack of interest flows in part from a trend toward young receivers making an immediate impact.

Footballguys view: Three concussions in two years with the Broncos doesn't help. His four-game suspension (reduced to two) from last year for violating the league's policy on performance enhancing drugs doesn't help either. Welker might be considering retirement as there are not a ton of teams willing to take a chance on him at this point in his career.

Denver Broncos impending free-agent WR Wes Welker is not planning on retiring. Welker said he's preparing for next season and added that he never said he was considering retirement, contrary to a previous report.

Footballguys view: Welker may be planning to play, but any team interested in him will proceed with caution. He's no longer an impact player, plus Welker has been concussed three times in the last two years.

Broncos | Wes Welker considering retirement    Tue Feb 10, 10:43 PM

Denver Broncos impending free-agent WR Wes Welker is considering retirement after several years of head injuries and declining production, sources said Tuesday, Dec. 10.

Footballguys view: Welker's time with the Broncos started off hot before concussion problems began to slow him down in 2013. Last season, Welker was suspended for the first four games (was reduced to two) for violating the league's policy on performance enhancing drugs. When he returned, his production was not the same. He's simply not the same player he used to be. When Welker hangs up his cleats, there's a chance we could see him in the Hall of Fame one day.

Broncos | Denver not expected to re-sign Wes Welker     Sun Feb 8, 11:16 AM

Denver Broncos impending free-agent WR Wes Welker is not expected to re-sign with the Broncos this offseason.

Footballguys view: Welker was always a two-year mercenary for the Broncos. His game has fallen off since he started out the 2013 season on a hot streak in Denver. New head coach Gary Kubiak implements a two tight end offense, and that means the slot receiver is relegated to little playing time.

Broncos | Wes Welker's targets fall off    Mon Jan 12, 09:19 PM

Denver Broncos WR Wes Welker was targeted 64 times in 14 games this season after being targeted 110 times in 13 games the previous season.

Footballguys view: Welker's role was minimized in Denver this year. The emergence of Emmanuel Sanders, plus the Broncos switch to a run-heavy offense, caused the change. Welker is likely done with the Broncos, and he enters free agency in 2015.

Denver Broncos WRs Demaryius Thomas (ankle) and Wes Welker (ankle) were limited in practice Thursday, Dec. 11, after sitting out Wednesday, Dec. 10.

Broncos | Wes Welker has back bruise    Mon Nov 3, 04:04 PM

Denver Broncos WR Wes Welker (back) suffered a back bruise in Sunday's contest against the New England Patriots. The timetable for his return was undisclosed.

Footballguys view: Welker is not the same player he used to be. He was concussed in the preseason game against the Houston Texans, then Welker missed time at the beginning of the year due to a suspension. Now, we could see the Broncos start to change things up offensively. Rookie Cody Latimer has been active more in recent weeks, and the team might start to see what the kid can do if Welker is down.
