Eagles | Know running game remains vital    Sat Jun 26, 05:05 PM

Eric Edholm, from ProFootballWeekly.com, reports that with all of the talk about how the offense will be different with the change from Donovan McNabb to Kevin Kolb at quarterback, it's easy to forget how important the run game might be in the big picture. It's nearly a given that the Eagles will throw the ball more than they run it this season. Since Andy Reid took over in 1999, the team has thrown the ball more than it passed it every season and has hovered around the 60 percent passing mark several times. But taking pressure off Kolb to win games by himself will be an important element of the Eagles' offensive identity.

Footballguys view: LeSean McCoy is going to be the main man for the Eagles, but shouldn't be a guy who gets 22-25 carries a game. Instead, the Eagles will complement him with veteran power back Mike Bell. Because he's been injury prone during his pro career, the Eagles have an option behind Bell (rookie Charles Scott) in case he gets banged up again. Fullback Leonard Weaver has been told that he won't see as many carries this year as he had last season, but he'll still be relied on as a receiver out of the backfield.

Eagles | Fewer carries for Weaver with Bell in town?    Sun Jun 6, 04:42 PM

Les Bowen, from the Philadelphia Daily News, reports Eagles FB Leonard Weaver commented on Mike Bell. "[Bell] and [LeSean] McCoy back there is going to be a great duo. Maybe sprinkle me in a little bit. Those guys are going to be the workhorses." Weaver likes what he has seen of Bell, he said. "I think he's doing great out there. He's learning very fast," Weaver said. "He's able to come out and be explosive and his ability is taking over without [Bell] having to think about what he has to do. It's tough when you haven't been in a West Coast offense. It makes it difficult sometimes. But he came in early, right away after the Super Bowl. He got in the playbook, and has been able to perform, so he looks great out there."

Footballguys view: Mike Bell has constantly battled through injury during his pro career, so the Eagles may be forced to get Weaver more carries than it seems right now. Philadelphia also drafted RB Charles Scott out of LSU, and he could be a perfect replacement for Mike Bell as the team's power back.

Eagles | Weaver wants McNabb to return    Mon Mar 29, 10:32 PM

The Philadelphia Daily News reports Philadelphia Eagles FB Leonard Weaver said during an interview on Sirius Radio that he would like for QB Donovan McNabb to return to the team for the 2010 season. Weaver said, "I'm surprised. Let the man go ahead and play the last year of his contract out...." Weaver added, "Not a knock on (QB Kevin) Kolb, but I would love for Donovan to come back for another year so we can try to win it all."

Brian Seltzer, from ESPN 950, reports the Eagles and fullback Leonard Weaver are talking "on a regular basis" about a new deal.

Footballguys view: Weaver is much more than a traditional fullback. He's a good receiver out of the backfield, and can rack up yards on the ground with his deceptive speed and power.

Eagles | Weaver has benefited from Westbrook's absence    Tue Dec 22, 10:24 AM

Bob Brookover, of the Philadelphia Inquirer, reports Philadelphia Eagles FB Leonard Weaver has benefited most from RB Brian Westbrook's (concussion) absence this season. Weaver carried the football 58 times for 287 yards in the eight games Westbrook has missed and just four times for 14 yards in the games he has played.

Footballguys view: Weaver has always looked good when he's carried the ball in the preseason, and Seahawks fans will tell you he could be this productive all along. He's a good receiver out of the backfield, and he's hard to bring down when he gets a head of steam.

Eagles | Weaver saw increased playing time Week 8    Tue Nov 3, 04:15 PM

Paul Domowitch, of the Philadelphia Daily News, reports Philadelphia Eagles FB Leonard Weaver saw increased playing time in Week 8 because of the absence of RB Brian Westbrook (concussion). Weaver saw most of the time in one-back sets because he was a better pass blocker than RB LeSean McCoy. He also got eight carries for a career high 75 yards during the game. When Westbrook returns to the lineup, Weaver likely will return to his job as the lead blocker.

Updating a previous item, Jeff McLane, of the Philadelphia Inquirer, reports Philadelphia Eagles FB Leonard Weaver (knee) suffered a MCL sprain during the team's preseason game Thursday, Aug. 20. Head coach Andy Reid does not think the injury is long term.

Eagles | Weaver could see time at tight end    Sun Aug 9, 05:12 PM

Bo Wulf, of PhiladelphiaEagles.com, reports Philadelphia Eagles head coach Andy Reid hinted during his press conference Sunday, Aug. 9, that FB Leonard Weaver could see some time at tight end. Weaver was a tight end during college, but he has not played there since.

Footballguys view: Weaver has always been a good pass catcher, and he was D2 all-american at Carson Newman as a TE, so this isn't a big surprise. The Bengals, Jets, and Eagles are all needy at TE, so there isn't that much to go around on the waiver wire.

Eagles | Weaver could be short yardage back    Sun Aug 2, 05:00 PM

Chris McPherson, from PhiladelphiaEagles.com, reports Ross Tucker (former Eagles offensive lineman) of SI.com was raving about FB Leonard Weaver. "He is so much faster than I thought," said Tucker. "He is going to turn out to be a great signing by the Eagles." Weaver has looked superb. He is a very good blocker, a receiver who actually ran a "go" route and caught a pass behind the defense in passing drills, and a runner who has some wheels and power. Need somebody to carry the ball on short yardage? Consider Weaver, please. He looks great.

Footballguys view: We thought Weaver should have gotten more carries when he was with the Seahawks, so we'd be thrilled in the Eagles finally used him the right way. Weaver is a good receiver, and runs with strength and power between the tackles. He's the perfect goalline back, and a change of pace from the backs (Westbrook, McCoy) he's blocking for.

Eagles | Westbrook back by mid-August?    Sun Jul 26, 05:41 PM

Adam Caplan, of Scout.com, reports on his Twitter feed that Eagles RB Brian Westbrook has a chance to get back on the practice field by mid-August, according to head coach Andy Reid, which is "exactly what we've been hearing". Caplan adds that "at what capacity" remains to be seen, so don't expect Westbook to play in more than one preseason game. Caplan thinks Westbrook will need 2-3 weeks to get ready for the regular season/

Footballguys view: The clouds around Westbrook are parting and some sunlight can finally be seen. This kind of news makes Westbrook a less dicey proposition in the early to mid-second round, especially in PPR leagues.

Eagles | Three to split time at running back in camp    Thu Jul 23, 12:01 PM

Bob Brookover, of The Philadelphia Inquirer, reports Philadelphia Eagles RBs Lorenzo Booker, LeSean McCoy and Kyle Eckel will receive the majority of work at running back during training camp with RB Brian Westbrook (ankle) recovering from ankle surgery. FB Leonard Weaver is also viewed as a contributor at running back.

Footballguys view: Weaver is going to be occupied learning the intricacies of the fullback position in Philly's offense, but he will most definitely be a contributor to the offense. In fact, Weaver is the best short yardage back the Eagles have on the roster, so if they want to save Westbrook some of that punishment, expect them to turn to Weaver.

Eagles | Westbrook to lose full-time goal line duties?    Tue Jul 21, 07:22 PM

John Czarnecki, of FoxSports.com, reports that Eagles RB Brian Westbrook will "no longer will be amassing 350 touches a season and handle the full-time goal-line running back duties."

Footballguys view: Czarnecki has not been the most reliable source of information on gamedays, so we wouldn't do anything drastic on this news, but Westbrook having surgery at a time that keeps him from participating in training camp is a red flag. Leonard Weaver gives the Eagles an excellent short yardage alternative to Westbrook, so Czarnecki's warning could prove to be correct.

Eagles | C Jackson: We want to run more    Mon Jul 20, 11:31 AM

Bob Brookover, of the Philadelphia Inquirer, reports that starting center Jamaal Jackson said the offensive line wants to give head coach Andy Reid the ability to run more. Jackson commented, "We want the coach to have the confidence in us to run the football a little bit more. I mean, we really have some road graders on the outside now, and we have some pretty powerful guys on the inside, too."

Footballguys view: The Eagles will never be accused of being a power-running team, but with the addition of talented second-round pick LeSean McCoy and hard-charging RB/FB tweener Leonard Weaver, they could lean more on the running game this year if Jackson and co. are successful in the mission to win Reid's confidence.
