49ers | Quartet of RBs work out for 49ers    Tue Oct 9, 05:56 PM

Free-agent RBs Shane Vereen (Saints), Charcandrick West (Chiefs), Andre Ellington and Matt Dayes (Browns) worked out for the San Francisco 49ers Tuesday, Oct. 9.

Footballguys view: The 49ers are clearly looking for running back help. Matt Breida is going to miss Week 6 against the Packers, so the team should turn to Alfred Morris as the starter. We should see fullback Kyle Juszczyk get involved as a receiver out of the backfield.

Saints | Shane Vereen going on IR    Fri Aug 31, 05:27 PM

New Orleans Saints RB Shane Vereen (undisclosed) will be placed on the Reserve/Injured list, according to a source. He left the final preseason game early Thursday, Aug. 30, and was having his fingers looked at on the sidelines.

Footballguys view: Vereen might have been in line to make the final roster as a backup to Alvin Kamara in the passing game, but that went by the wayside when he got hurt.

Saints | Shane Vereen signs with Saints    Wed Jul 18, 11:39 AM

Free-agent RB Shane Vereen (Giants) signed an undisclosed deal with the New Orleans Saints Wednesday, July 18.

Footballguys view: Vereen is a pass-catching back who gives the Saints (more) veteran depth on their roster. Their RB room is jam packed with talent, so Vereen is no lock for the 53-man roster. Alvin Kamara leads the way with Mark Ingram as a top reserve (when he's back from his four-game suspension). Behind Kamara, Vereen will compete with guys like Terrance West and Jonathan Williams to establish a pecking order.

Giants | Shane Vereen does not practice    Thu Sep 28, 03:05 PM

New York Giants RB Shane Vereen (calf) did not participate in practice Thursday, Sept. 28.

Footballguys view: Vereen really hasn't done much in the backfield, but neither has anyone else. Orleans Darkwa looks like the leader of this rather uninspiring pack, and we wouldn't look for anything more than RB4 numbers against Tampa Bay. This offensive line is that bad. So ultimately, Vereen isn't missing much and neither is your lineup by not having access to him.

Giants | Shane Vereen sidelined due to calf    Wed Sep 27, 03:13 PM

New York Giants RB Shane Vereen (calf) did not practice Wednesday, Sept. 27.

Giants | Orleans Darkwa getting first-team run    Fri Aug 11, 03:52 PM

New York Giants RB Orleans Darkwa has been splitting first-team reps with Paul Perkins and seeing even more work than usual with Shane Vereen unavailable recently. According to the New York Daily News' Pat Leonard, Darkwa appears to be challenging for a feature role.

Footballguys view: Perkins is a smaller, speedy back while Darkwa has a bit more size and more power to his game. The Giants are going to use a RBBC no matter who wins the starting job in 2017. Perkins is coming off the board at RB29 (6.10) in 12-team PPR leagues while Darkwa is not currently getting drafted in such leagues.

Giants | Shane Vereen not rushing back     Fri Jun 9, 02:21 PM

New York Giants RB Shane Vereen (triceps) is taking a slower approach this offseason after he admitted returning prematurely from a torn triceps last year.

Footballguys view: The twice torn triceps held him to just five games last year. Vereen is the pass-catching back for this team, but it will be interesting to see how touches are split in a three-way RBBC. Paul Perkins and rookie Wayne Gallman should serve as the primary ball-carriers in 2017.

Giants | Shane Vereen ready to go    Fri May 19, 09:54 PM

New York Giants RB Shane Vereen (triceps) is fully recovered after tearing his triceps twice last season.

Footballguys view: Vereen is going to have a chance for snaps in a Giants backfield that is up in the air in 2017. Paul Perkins and Wayne Gallman will compete with Vereen for touches, but both of those young backs are currently ahead in the pecking order.

New York Giants RB Shane Vereen reduced his 2017 base salary from $3.15 million to $2.15 million, according to NFL Players Association records.

Footballguys view: The Giants are in some financial straits, so this is likely the only way Vereen--who has had limited impact--was staying with the Giants. We think he has some upside, but really isn't more than a bench player for fantasy.

Giants | Shane Vereen expected to be back    Thu Feb 9, 11:02 PM

New York Giants RB Shane Vereen (arm) is expected to be back with the team in 2017 as long as his rehab from a torn triceps continues to go well, according to beat writer Jordan Raanan.

Footballguys view: Vereen can make plays as a change-of-pace back if healthy. He should work in the mix behind Paul Perkins. We're expecting Perkins to get a larger role in his second year after finishing his rookie season with a 100-yard game against Washington.

Giants | Surgery for Shane Vereen    Wed Dec 21, 01:39 AM

Updating previous reports, New York Giants RB Shane Vereen (triceps) will need surgery on his injured triceps, according to head coach Ben McAdoo.

Footballguys view: Vereen is signed through 2017, but there's no guarantee the team is going to keep him on the roster for next season. Without Vereen in the lineup, the Giants will continue to go with a RBBC featuring veteran Rashad Jennings and rookie Paul Perkins.

Giants | Shane Vereen's season over    Tue Dec 20, 10:11 AM

New York Giants RB Shane Vereen (triceps) was placed on the Reserve/Injured list Tuesday, Dec. 20, ending his season.

Footballguys view: Vereen initially hurt his tricep back in Week 3 and missed most of the season because of it. The Giants brought him back, but he ended up injuring his triceps again. Now, they'll move forward with Paul Perkins and Rashad Jennings in a RBBC. Vereen is signed with the team through 2017, but there's no guarantee he'll be on the roster when OTAs begin.

Giants | Shane Vereen limited     Thu Dec 15, 04:12 PM

New York Giants RB Shane Vereen (concussion) was limited in practice Thursday, Dec. 15.

Footballguys view: We don't expect much from Vereen - well, we really don't expect much from any Giants running back this season - and wouldn't have him near our lineups this week. If you are super-desperate, he is rated as a RB6.

Updating previous reports, New York Giants RB Shane Vereen (triceps) will be activated from injured reserve Saturday, Dec. 10, and is expected to play in Week 14's game against the Dallas Cowboys, according to multiple sources with knowledge of the team's plans.

Footballguys view: Vereen is back in action, but he'll be splitting time behind Rashad Jennings with rookie Paul Perkins. We don't see that role being large enough to be fantasy relevant.

Giants | Shane Vereen practicing    Wed Dec 7, 12:40 PM

New York Giants RB Shane Vereen (triceps) is practicing again Wednesday, Dec. 7.

Footballguys view: Vereen could be back this week for the Giants, but fantasy owners shouldn't be adding him -- even in deep leagues. They are using rookie RB Paul Perkins more, and he'll continue to get worked into action behind starter Rashad Jennings. Vereen would be third on the depth chart at best with only a few touches here and there if/when active.

New York Giants RB Shane Vereen (triceps) is hoping to be activated in time for the team's Week 14 showdown with the Dallas Cowboys, according to ESPN's Jordan Raanan.

Footballguys view: We're not expecting much from Vereen if he does play. The team has been working in more of rookie RB Paul Perkins, and that trend should continue regardless of Vereen's availability.

Giants | Shane Vereen could return next month    Sun Nov 27, 11:15 AM

The New York Giants are hoping that RB Shane Vereen (triceps) will be able to return from injured reserve Dec. 11.

Giants | Good chance Shane Vereen returns?    Mon Nov 7, 01:42 PM

New York Giants RB Shane Vereen (triceps) has a 'good chance' to reap term before the end of the season, according to The Bergen Record's Art Stapleton.

Footballguys view: Even if Vereen returns, fantasy owners shouldn't be looking to him for help. The Giants want to use more of rookie Paul Perkins, but even he's nothing more than a waiver wire speed dial guy just in case he starts producing.

Giants | Shane Vereen goes to IR    Tue Sep 27, 04:37 PM

Giants | Paul Perkins ready for bigger role    Tue Sep 27, 12:29 PM

New York Giants RB Paul Perkins is among the candidates who will be asked to fill the void left behind by the absence of Shane Vereen (triceps) after the team's leading rusher suffered a triceps injury in Week 3 that is expected to sideline him at least two months. Head coach Ben McAdoo stated a committee will replace Vereen and that Perkins is 'ready to step up'.

Footballguys view: Bobby Rainey should get first crack at the Shane Vereen role in the Giants backfield behind starter Rashad Jennings. However, Perkins is a player who cannot be forgotten about. At UCLA, Perkins drew a lot of comparisons to Jamaal Charles (Chiefs) because of his speed and ability to break off field-flipping plays. Watch to see if Perkins can do more with his opportunity now that Vereen is hurt.

Giants | Shane Vereen could return late in season    Mon Sep 26, 04:06 PM

Updating a previous report, New York Giants RB Shane Vereen (triceps) is expected to take two months to recover from triceps surgery, according to sources. He could be placed on the Reserve/Injured list and then come off later.

Footballguys view: Ah yes, the new IR rules in the NFL. Vereen looked good with a larger role in Week 3 while Rashad Jennings was out. Without Vereen, Jennings should be the lead back. Bobby Rainey and rookie Paul Perkins will compete for playing time as well.

Giants | Shane Vereen out for the season    Mon Sep 26, 01:31 PM

Footballguys view: Vereen was the leading back for the Giants in Week 3, but now they will turn back to Rashad Jennings (if healthy). Orleans Darkwa needs to be added to your roster if you need RB help. Keep an eye on Bobby Rainey and rookie Paul Perkins in deeper leagues too.

Contrary to a previous report, New York Giants RB Rashad Jennings (thumb) is not expected to be active for Week 3's game against the Washington Redskins. RB Shane Vereen is expected to see the bulk of the snaps in his place.

Footballguys view: Orleans Darkwa is Jennings backup between the tackles and he could get goal line work. Washington is a favorable rushing matchup, so Vereen moves into RB2 consideration, especially in PPR leagues.

Giants | Shane Vereen slated as third-down back    Fri Aug 5, 03:28 PM

New York Giants RB Shane Vereen will be utilized as the third-down and hurry-up-offense back this season.

Footballguys view: Rashad Jennings has generated buzz during camp because he is being treated as an incumbent feature back after a strong finish to 2015, but Vereen will cap his upside as an RB2 with his steady role in an offense that will tilt pass-heavy.

Giants | Solid workload for Rashad Jennings?    Sat Jul 9, 03:31 PM

New York Giants RB Rashad Jennings could see around 15 to 18 carries per game in 2016, according to John Schmeelk of giants.com. Jennings will still be the Giants' primary running back, with RB Shane Vereen serving as the third-down back.

Footballguys view: If Jennings can stay healthy in his age-31 season, he could be a RB2 or strong flex play for fantasy owners. He has good ability as a receiver, but the Giants may want to mix in Vereen (or rookie Paul Perkins) as a pass-catching back. Right now, fantasy owners see Jennings as RB38 (8.11) in 12-team PPR leagues.

Giants | Minimal impact from Paul Perkins?    Thu May 12, 05:05 PM

New York Giants rookie RB Paul Perkins isn't expected to have much of an impact in his rookie season, in the opinion of Ralph Vacchiano of the New York Daily News. Vacchiano anticipates RB Andre Williams to have the first shot at being the short-yardage running back and Jennings' backup, with RB Shane Vereen reprising his pass-catching and third-down role.

Footballguys view: Andre Williams has been sub-impressive so far, so we're not holding our breath. In fact, nobody in this backfield should feel good about their job security. There wasn't a 1000 yard back in the group last season either meaning, again, assume nothing. Perkins won't be someone to plug in early, but he's someone who could get opportunity later in the season.
