Jets | No official visit for Osi Umenyiora    Thu Mar 19, 02:33 PM

Free-agent DE Osi Umenyiora (Falcons) didn't have an official visit with the New York Jets Wednesday, March 18, according to general manager Mike Maccagnan. Umenyiora was only visiting to say hi to new head coach Todd Bowles.

Footballguys view: Jets fans were hoping for a little schadenfreude if they stole a Giants player, even one who the team didn't keep last off-season. Alas, that seems as if it won't happen this time.

Jets | Osi Umenyiora visits    Wed Mar 18, 07:50 PM

Free-agent DE Osi Umenyiora (Falcons) made a visit to the New York Jets Wednesday, March 18.

Footballguys view: Umenyiora is no longer the player he used to be, and his last double-digit sack season was 2010. He's played the last two years for the Falcons, and Umenyiora only had 2.5 sacks in 2014. If the Jets add him, Umenyiora would likely only be a part-time pass-rusher.

Falcons | Osi Umenyiora set to be free agent    Mon Feb 16, 07:42 PM

Atlanta Falcons DE Osi Umenyiora is set to become an unrestricted free agent this March.

Footballguys view: Umenyiora's 2.5 sacks were the lowest of his career since his rookie season (2003) when he finished with a single sack. He's no longer the player he used to be, but there might be a few teams interested in adding Umenyiora as a part-time pass-rusher. We could even see him return to the New York Giants.

Falcons | Osi Umenyiora adjusting to 3-4 base    Tue Jul 29, 10:10 PM

Falcons | Osi Umenyiora to pass rush    Thu Jun 12, 09:12 AM

Atlanta Falcons head coach Mike Smith said DE Osi Umenyiora will be the designated pass-rusher in their defense. Umenyiora has dropped 10 pounds to 250 pounds for this season. 'I hope (his regular-season reps) are a lot. That means they're throwing a lot and that means we're in the lead,' Smith said. 'In a 60-play game, you're looking somewhere in between 25 to 35 (snaps.) He'll be fresh. I think it will be a very good thing. And I think at the end of last season, when we put him in as a defensive pass-rusher and that's all he was doing and his number of snaps went down, I thought he was much more productive.'

Footballguys view: We only expect him to play between 20-35 snaps a game, so his role is definitely limited. That said, he could be more effective for it. Certainly the Falcons need help with pass rush duties and Umenyiora should be able to succeed as a situational pass rusher.

Atlanta Falcons DEs Osi Umenyiora and Kroy Biermann will be back with the team in 2014 without having to restructure their contracts. The team originally wanted Umenyiora to take a pay cut but backed off when they saw how he was mentoring younger players.

Giants | Could be interested in Osi Umenyiora if cut    Fri Mar 7, 08:12 PM

The New York Giants could have interest in Atlanta Falcons DE Osi Umenyiora if he is released by the Falcons this offseason. Umenyiora would consider returning to the Giants if he becomes a free agent.

Footballguys view: It makes a lot of sense for the Giants if the price is right. Umenyiora racked up 7.5 sacks with the Falcons in 2013, but the team may ask him to take a pay cut. He has a $4.7 million cap number in 2014, with only $1.25 million in dead money.

Falcons | Want Osi Umenyiora to take pay cut    Thu Mar 6, 01:31 PM

The Atlanta Falcons want DE Osi Umenyiora to take a pay cut. Umenyiora is scheduled to make $3.5 million in 2014.

Footballguys view: The Falcons have a lot of issues and Umenyiora had a less-than-outstanding year. It makes sense for them to ask but will they cut him if he doesn't is the question.

Falcons | Osi Umenyiora likely to return    Thu Feb 20, 01:12 PM

Atlanta Falcons DE Osi Umenyiora is likely to return to the team for the 2014 season, despite his $4.5 million salary for the upcoming year. Smith added that while he 'never would say never,' he looks forward to continuing to work with the veteran pass rusher.

Falcons | Osi Umenyiora wants to stay    Tue Feb 11, 12:15 PM

Atlanta Falcons DE Osi Umenyiora wants to remain with the team next season. 'I would love to stay, and I think I am,' Umenyiora said. 'But you really never know what's going to happen.'

Footballguys view: Umenyiora led the Falcons in sacks (7.5) last year, and he's counts $4.7 million against the cap in 2014. There's also a roster bonus of $1 million to be paid in mid-March. Umenyiora did not say whether or not he would accept a pay cut. Releasing him would save $3.5 million against the cap.

Falcons | Osi Umenyiora in reserve role?    Tue Dec 17, 09:00 PM

Atlanta Falcons DE Osi Umenyiora played just 27 snaps in a reserve role in Week 15 against the Washington Redskins, working as a designated pass rusher. DE Jonathan Massaquoi started in Umenyiora's usual spot. Head coach Mike Smith is trying to keep Umenyiora fresh, and after a meeting with head coach Mike Smith, defensive coordinator Mike Nolan indicated Tuesday, Dec. 17, that the veteran was content with the move. 'I thought he did an outstanding job in the game when he did go in,' Nolan said. 'He was fresher. He was better prepared for the third down because of that. You know, when you play every down, it can wear on you.'

Falcons | Wednesday practice report    Wed Oct 30, 04:19 PM

Atlanta Falcons RB Jason Snelling (ankle), WR Roddy White (ankle, hamstring) and LB Stephen Nicholas (thigh) did not participate in practice Wednesday, Oct. 30. C Joe Hawley (elbow), OG Garrett Reynolds (knee), OT Sam Baker (knee), DE Osi Umenyiora (knee), DT Peria Jerry (toe), LB Akeem Dent (ankle) and SS William Moore (hip) were limited during practice.

Footballguys view: White is the player everyone is waiting on here. There's no update on his health status, and he's a risky play even when he first comes back. Don't feel confident starting White (even as a desperation play) until we see him practice in back-to-back days as a full participant.

Falcons | Osi Umenyiora seeing time at LB    Sun Jul 28, 11:45 AM

The Atlanta Falcons have used DE Osi Umenyiora as a standup linebacker at times since training camp began. Umenyiora said he does not know if he will line up at the position during a regular season game but wants to work on it in case he needs to play the position.

Footballguys view: Falcons defensive coordinator Mike Nolan is known for mixing up fronts and looks on defense, but Umenyiora might not be the best player to experiment with in that way. The Falcons must have Umenyiora healthy and generating pressure if they are going to repeat as NFC South champs.

'I have a lot less wear and tear on my body over the last two years than I normally would have if I would have been playing all those (extra) downs.   NFL | Dwight Freeney likely to receive big interest     Mon Feb 18, 10:13 AM

The NFL is reportedly buzzing over the Indianapolis Colts' decision not to re-sign impending free-agent LB Dwight Freeney. One general manager who was very interested already in New York Giants impending free-agent DE Osi Umenyiora said Freeney would leapfrog Umenyiora on his free-agent board.

Footballguys view: Freeney should draw interest from teams who think he's still got something left in the tank after two disappointing seasons. We expect the Falcons and Seahawks to show interest in the veteran, and going to a 4-3 defense would be the best fit. Freeney was out of place in 2012 as an OLB in the Colts 3-4 scheme.
