Jaguars | Jeff Tuel claimed    Mon Jun 1, 04:56 PM

Free-agent QB Jeff Tuel (Bills) was claimed by the Jacksonville Jaguars Monday, June 1.

Footballguys view: Tuel is likely just a camp arm, but he does have connections to the coaching staff in Jacksonville. Doug Marrone (assistant head coach) and Nathaniel Hackett (quarterback coach) were the Bills' head coach and offensive coordinator, respectively, the past two seasons.

Bills | Matt Simms claimed    Fri May 29, 05:34 PM

New York Jets QB Matt Simms was claimed off waivers by the Buffalo Bills Friday, May 29. The Bills also waived QB Jeff Tuel.

Footballguys view: We don't see Simms as anything more than a camp arm for the Bills. As a former Jets player, Simms has ties to Rex Ryan and he knows what the coach wants from a quarterback.

Bills | Buffalo QBs receiving equal reps at OTAs    Wed May 27, 02:37 PM

Buffalo Bills QBs EJ Manuel, Matt Cassel, Tyrod Taylor and Jeff Tuel were given equal repetitions during organized team activities Tuesday, May 26. Manuel and Cassel worked with the starters while Taylor and Tuel worked with the backups. Head coach Rex Ryan said he wants to give everyone a fair chance.

Footballguys view: Cassel has the most experience, but he's not an exciting option as a starter. Manuel is big, somewhat athletic and has a strong arm but his decision making needs a lot of work. Taylor could be a sleeper here. He's ultra athletic and has a rocket arm. He needs to show better accuracy as a passer if he wants to win the starting job in Buffalo.

Bills | EJ Manuel part of open competition     Sat May 23, 11:44 PM

Buffalo Bills QBs EJ Manuel, Matt Cassel, Tyrod Taylor and Jeff Tuel will all have a chance to win the starting job, according to general manager Doug Whaley.

Footballguys view: Let's go ahead and leave Tuel out of this conversation. Manuel is big, athletic and has a strong arm but he failed to make quick decisions as a passer. Cassel has the most experience, but he's not an exciting option as a starter--even for a team that is going to be run-heavy on offense. Taylor is supremely gifted athletically and he has a rocket arm, but he's unproven and needs to be more accurate as a passer. The Bills are going to run the ball as much as possible, and any starting quarterback for them isn't going to be much of a fantasy factor.

Buffalo Bills QBs EJ Manuel, Matt Cassel, Jeff Tuel and Tyrod Taylor will all receive first-team repetitions in workouts, according to offensive coordinator Greg Roman.

Footballguys view: The Bills are going to have an open competition at quarterback. At the end of the day, we think Matt Cassel ends up with the starting job. Tyrod Taylor might be better competition for the starting job over E.J. Manuel.

Bills | Jeff Tuel being cut    Sat Aug 30, 03:45 PM

Buffalo Bills QB Jeff Tuel will be released Saturday, Aug. 30.

Footballguys view: With Kyle Orton signed, the writing was on the wall for Tuel. We're not shocked here. Tuel's pop-gun arm and moxie weren't enough to make a quality backup.

Bills | Coach not happy with backup QB play    Sun Aug 17, 08:27 PM

Buffalo Bills head coach Doug Marrone said he was not happy with the play of QBs Thaddeus Lewis and Jeff Tuel during the second preseason game. Lewis went 1-for-6 for 18 yards and an interception, while Tuel went 5-for-9 for 48 yards and a fumble. The competition for the No. 2 quarterback job is still considered open.

Footballguys view: EJ Manuel has been a middling to poor option for the Bills, but neither of the backups are inspiring confidence after Lewis was actually quite functional in the Marrone/Hackett offense last year. Manuel also missed multiple games with injuries last year, so this is shaping up for a potentially disastrous season at QB for Buffalo with Cleveland holding their first-round pick next year.

Bills | Thaddeus Lewis, Jeff Tuel battling    Sat Aug 2, 01:18 AM

Buffalo Bills QBs Thaddeus Lewis and Jeff Tuel are battling for the primary back job to QB EJ Manuel. Lewis continued to struggled Friday, Aug. 1, and Tuel had one of his best days of training camp, creating some space in the battle to be backup.

Footballguys view: We can't imagine Tuel winning the primary backup job. Lewis is more athletic and has a stronger arm. We'll see this battle play out through training camp.

Buffalo Bills QB Thaddeus Lewis and QB Jeff Tuel are in an open competition for the backup quarterback job, head coach Doug Marrone said Tuesday, July 22.

Bills | Backup QBs alternating    Tue Jul 22, 10:32 AM

Buffalo Bills QBs Jeff Tuel and Thaddeus Lewis are alternating series with the second unit in team drills Tuesday, July 22.

Footballguys view: Tuel has a weak arm, but he's accurate on shorter routes. Lewis is the player to watch here. He is athletic, can zip the ball downfield and looked good in limited playing time last year. Starting QB E.J. Manuel needs to avoid the injuries that plagued him last year. If Manuel is hurt, Lewis could take over and have some nice weapons around him to throw to.

Bills | Jeff Tuel may challenge for No. 2 slot    Mon Jun 23, 02:18 AM

Updating a previous item, Buffalo Bills QB Jeff Tuel has made significant progress in the offseason and may challenge QB Thaddeus Lewis for the backup spot.

Footballguys view: We think Lewis is the man for the job here. Yes, Tuel will "challenge" him but in the end it's like Lewis who is going to win the QB2 spot in Buffalo. Lewis has a skill set that more closely resembles that of starter E.J. Manuel. The Bills franchise quarterback struggled to stay healthy as a rookie, and if those injury woes continue then the team will need a player like Lewis to come in and play well.

Bills | Holding out hope for Thaddeus Lewis    Fri Nov 1, 02:32 PM

The Buffalo Bills are holding out hope that QB Thaddeus Lewis (ribs) can play in Week 9 against the Kansas City Chiefs, and the team plans on having him throw later Friday, Nov. 1, and work out again Saturday, Nov. 2, before making a final determination. 'We're trying to hold out to see if Thad will be ready. We feel that if he is, we have the option to play him if he's healthy enough for us to win,' head coach Doug Marrone said. 'When you're dealing with muscle injuries, they kind of take it all the way up until game time. This one's a pain tolerance situation to see what he can do.' QB Jeff Tuel has a better understanding of the team's offense and is favored to start over QB Matt Flynn if Lewis can't play.

Footballguys view: When your other choices are Jeff Tuel and recently arrived Matt Flynn, yes Thad Lewis is the guy you're hoping for. If you're starting one of these guys this week, then like Morpheus told Neo: you should take the blue pill - the story ends, you wake up in your bed and believe whatever you want to believe. Because it might be better than what you'll see in your fantasy lineup.

Bills | Thaddeus Lewis doubtful    Fri Nov 1, 01:57 PM

Buffalo Bills QB Thaddeus Lewis (ribs) was limited in practice Friday, Nov. 1, but is listed as doubtful for Week 9 against the Kansas City Chiefs. QBs Jeff Tuel or Matt Flynn will start if Lewis doesn't play. Tuel received most of the first-team repetitions in practice this week in Lewis' absence. 'It's a point of the soreness of the ribs,' head coach Doug Marrone said. 'Really just being able to turn and throw. That's the one thing that's holding him back. If he can get by that, then he will be able to play.' Lewis worked on footwork ant timing Friday but did not throw any passes.

Footballguys view: Tuel and Flynn are not great choices. Tuel wasn't good when he played briefly earlier this season while Flynn has not been with the team long enough for us to feel confident he has a grasp of the playbook. This could be bad news for Steve Johnson and Robert Woods.

Bills | Thaddeus Lewis still 50-50    Thu Oct 31, 02:42 PM

Buffalo Bills QB Thaddeus Lewis (rib, flu) did not practice again Thursday, Oct. 31, and he remains 50-50 to play in Week 9 against the Kansas City Chiefs. Head coach Doug Marrone said the team hasn't decided if Lewis will be able to start. Both QBs Jeff Tuel and Matt Flynn have taken first-team repetitions in practice this week, but Marrone 'feels better' about going with Tuel if he has to.

Footballguys view: This isn't a great situation for the offense. Either they get Tuel, who was underwhelming in his only appearance or Flynn who is probably still learning the offense and was pretty uninspiring in Oakland and Seattle. It's terrifying to think that anyone is hoping for their quarterback to be a former undrafted free agent, but Thad Lewis seems to be their best hope.

Bills | Thaddeus Lewis 50-50 to return to practice    Thu Oct 31, 02:10 AM

Updating a previous item, Buffalo Bills coach Doug Marrone said QB Thaddeus Lewis' (ribs) chances of returning to practice this week are 50-50, which would seem to indicate his chances of playing are in serious jeopardy. Marrone said that right now, if Lewis can't play, QB Jeff Tuel would probably be the starter, but only because he's been here longer than QB Matt Flynn. Flynn, however, does have NFL experience, so Marrone could also opt to go that way and disregard Tuel's advantage in regards to knowing the offense.

Footballguys view: The Bills should be hoping that Lewis gets the start here. He's done a good job moving the offense while E.J. Manuel (knee) has been out.

Bills | Thaddeus Lewis ill    Wed Oct 30, 03:24 PM

In addition to Buffalo Bills QB Thaddeus Lewis (rib, flu) dealing with a rib contusion, he's also dealing with a 'flu virus.' Head coach Doug Marrone said Lewis is 50-50 to play in Week 9 against the Kansas City Chiefs. QBs Jeff Tuel and Matt Flynn split first-team repetitions in practice Wednesday, Oct. 30. 'Coach Marrone walked into the room and said 'It could be anybody. We don't know,'' Tuel said. 'We know as much as you do.' Marrone will evaluate Lewis' chances to start later this week, but it appears as though he's leaning toward going with Tuel if Lewis can't play.

Bills | Teammate confident in Jeff Tuel    Sat Oct 5, 12:33 PM

Buffalo Bills WR Robert Woods said he has confidence in QB Jeff Tuel as the team's starting quarterback because he received time with the first-team offense during the preseason. 'He did play in some preseason games for us and he does have a little bit of game experience and that's a plus for us,' Woods said. 'This week right here is just pushing to get better. More reps with him would be better for us.'

Footballguys view: We're likely to see the Bills add a street free agent while E.J. Manuel misses time with a knee injury. Tuel is accurate on short routes, but struggles to thrown downfield or across his body. He couldn't move the offense against the Browns on Thursday night and is not the answer.

Footballguys view: Great news for the Bills here. Manuel looked great in the first two preseason games but missed the rest of August with this minor knee injury. If he can't start in week one against the Patriots then we'll see Tuel in the lineup.

Buffalo Bills QB EJ Manuel (knee) threw 'a lot' of balls in warmups before their preseason game Thursday, Aug. 29. He wasn't moving around much, though. He's still up in the air for Week 1 against the New England Patriots.

Footballguys view: Manuel is getting closer but is not there just yet. He's coming back from the knee injury he suffered in the preseason and his status for week one of the regular season is up in the air. We'll see Jeff Tuel in the starting lineup if Manuel can't play.

Bills | Jeff Tuel might be start in Week 1    Tue Aug 27, 12:35 PM

Buffalo Bills head coach Doug Marrone said Tuesday, Aug. 27, that rookie QB EJ Manuel (knee) needs to be cleared to practice by Wednesday, Sept. 4, if he is to play in the regular season opener Sept. 8 against the New England Patriots. Even then, Manuel would need to pass an evaluation. QB Jeff Tuel legitimately has a chance to open the season as the starter.

Footballguys view: Tuel knows the system better than newly acquired Matt Leinart. He's also the healthiest option the Bills have at QB right now. E.J. Manuel is the franchise QB and looked good in the first two weeks of the preseason. The team doesn't want to rush him back too soon from his knee injury.

Bills | Planning on Jeff Tuel to start Week 1    Mon Aug 26, 01:02 PM

Buffalo Bills head coach Doug Marrone said the team is planning to start QB Jeff Tuel Week 1 because of the injuries to QB EJ Manuel (knee) and QB Kevin Kolb (concussion).

Footballguys view: Tuel has the most experience in the offense and is the healthiest option. The team signed veteran Matt Leinart on Sunday but he's unlikely to be ready to start by week one. Tuel is a smart quarterback who anticipates well and does a good job spreading the ball around on short and underneath routes. Having the undrafted rookie under center will mean more touches and targets for C.J. Spiller.

Bills | Jeff Tuel could start in Week 1    Sun Aug 25, 08:16 PM

The prospect of Buffalo Bills QB Jeff Tuel starting the regular season opener against the New England Patriots Sept. 8 looms as a distinct possibility with QB EJ Manuel (knee) recovering from surgery, and QB Kevin Kolb (concussion) facing a lengthy absence following another concussion.

Footballguys view: Tuel would be the most familiar with the offense of the healthy QBs on the roster if EJ Manuel can't go in week 1. Suffice to say, the Patriots might be the best option of any D/ST in week 1. They also get the Jets in week 2.

Buffalo Bills QB Jeff Tuel could play as much as a half in the team's preseason game Sunday, Aug. 11, because of the injury to QB Kevin Kolb (knee).

Footballguys view: With Kevin Kolb hurt (and not exactly lighting camp up) Tuel could find himself in great position to make the roster with a good performance. He won't threaten EJ Manuel or Kolb, but he can make a case for a roster spot.

Bills | Pleased with EJ Manuel    Tue Aug 6, 12:20 AM

Buffalo Bills QB EJ Manuel split the snaps with QB Jeff Tuel in an intrasquad scrimmage Monday, Aug. 5, and after a slow start, the rookie Manuel settled in and showed well. Head coach Doug Marrone liked what he saw. 'I'm pleased with a couple of things,' Marrone said, 'just his demeanor coming back, obviously, from the start with the interceptions. I'm pleased that he led us on a two-minute drive. He's done that consistent. I think that's difficult to do.'

Footballguys view: Manuel is a football junkie who can't get enough of the game. He's always been known as a hard worker and now has his sights set on being the best pro he possibly can be. Manuel is competing with Kevin Kolb for the starting job and is seen as the QB of the future.
