Steelers | Mason Rudolph to start    Mon Dec 18, 12:43 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers QB Mason Rudolph will start over QB Mitchell Trubisky in Week 16, according to head coach Mike Tomlin.

Footballguys view: Nobody should be surprised by this development. Trubisky is not a great starting option, and perhaps Rudolph will give the offense more spark. Now, it could be more "sparklers" and less "fireworks" with Rudolph out there but we're almost positive it will be better (even if just a little bit) over Trubisky.

Steelers | Mitchell Trubisky accounts for a pair of TDs    Fri Dec 8, 05:10 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers QB Mitchell Trubisky completed 22 of his 35 passes for 190 yards, one touchdown, and one interception against the New England Patriots on Thursday, Dec. 7. Trubisky also ran eight times for a team-high 30 yards and a touchdown.

Footballguys view: Trubisky was okay for fantasy, but a nightmare for Steelers fans. He was ineffective and never really threatened a Patriots defense that dared the Steelers to beat them with the pass. The Steelers season could nosedive quickly with the Colts up next.

Steelers | Mitchell Trubisky staying put    Thu May 18, 02:09 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers QB Mitchell Trubisky agreed to terms on a two-year contract extension Thursday, May 18. Financial terms of the deal were not immediately disclosed.

Footballguys view: The Steelers are keeping things as they were in 2022 with QB Kenny Pickett as their starter and Trubisky as their primary backup. They'll keep that in place, and now it's up to Pickett to continue to grow and develop as a pro passer. Trubisky won't see the field unless Pickett struggles mightily or gets banged up.

Steelers | Mitchell Trubisky has decent outing    Sun Dec 18, 04:11 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers QB Mitchell Trubisky went 17-for-22 for 179 yards, zero touchdowns and zero interceptions against the Carolina Panthers in Week 15. He also rushed for nine yards and one touchdown on six carries during the game.

Footballguys view: Trubisky didn't force the Steelers to yank on the short leash he reportedly had going into the game. The Steelers are still mathematically alive for a playoff berth and for avoiding Mike Tomlin's first losing season. Trubisky won't replace Kenny Pickett if Pickett is out of concusison protocol, but this performance could encourage the team to be conservative about the rookie's return against the Raiders next week.

Steelers | Mitchell Trubisky on short leash?    Sun Dec 18, 09:28 AM

Although Pittsburgh Steelers QB Mitchell Trubisky has been named the starter for Week 15's game versus the Carolina Panthers, multiple sources said that he will be on a short leash if the club gets off to a slow start offensively. QB Mason Rudolph, who will back up Trubisky, took increased reps throughout the week in practice.

Steelers | Mitchell Trubisky expected to start    Sat Dec 17, 12:05 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers QB Mitchell Trubisky is expected to start in Week 15 with QB Kenny Pickett (concussion) unlikely to play, per sources on Saturday, Dec. 17.

Footballguys view: Trubisky will start, and Pickett will get more rest. This is Pickett's second concussion this year, and his long-term health is much more important than a late-season, out-of-conference game. Trubisky was splitting reps with Mason Rudolph in practice this week, but it sounds like the Steelers are going to lean on the more experienced quarterback.

Pittsburgh Steelers QB Mitchell Trubisky went 9-for-12 for 144 yards and one touchdown against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Week 6.

Footballguys view: Trubisky was clutch on multiple third and long plays to clinch the game. He also got Chase Claypool going for the first time this year. Kenny Pickett's concussion could keep him out next week against the Dolphins, and the Steelers will have a lot more confidence in Trubisky than they did this morning if Pickett can't play.

Steelers | Mitchell Trubisky not on short leash as starter    Sun Sep 11, 12:51 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers QB Mitchell Trubisky is expected to be given a long look as the team's starting quarterback, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport. He performed well during the preseason in an offensive system that appeared to suit his strengths and head coach Mike Tomlin doesn't want Trubisky to worry about being pulled from the game after having a bad series.

Footballguys view: This is bad news for redraft superflex teams that are hoping Kenny Pickett will be coming to help their quarterback depth. The Steelers defense has been outstanding today, and as long as they are competitive, the switch to Pickett is unlikely. Mike Tomlin has never handled a quarterback situation like this before, and it appears that he will be extremely conservative.

Steelers | Mitchell Trubisky expected to get Week 1 nod    Mon Aug 29, 02:41 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers QB Mitchell Trubisky will likely be the starting quarterback in Week 1 against the Cincinnati Bengals, but head coach Mike Tomlin will announce the identity of the starting quarterback at his leisure, according to NFL Media's Ian Rapoport. It would be a surprise if Mitchell Trubisky is not named the starting quarterback for Week 1. ... He has been the QB1 from the beginning,' according to Rapoport.

Footballguys view: Nobody should be surprised by this news. What would be more surprising is Trubisky starting all of the 2022 season. The Steelers have Kenny Pickett, a first-round pick in this year's draft, as the quarterback of the future. When they're out of playoff contention, perhaps the team turns the reins of the offense over to the rookie to get him valuable experience.

Pittsburgh Steelers QB Mitchell Trubisky completed 15-of-19 passes for 160 yards and one touchdown in the preseason finale on Sunday, Aug. 28.

Footballguys view: Trubisky is the starter - for now - just like he's always been. The Steelers have 2022 first-round pick Kenny Pickett waiting in the wings to take over. If/when Trubisky stumbles or struggles, the team likely has the confidence to turn things over to the rookie. Pickett is far from a finished product, but he's seen as the quarterback of the future.

Steelers | Mitchell Trubisky to start preseason finale    Fri Aug 26, 12:39 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers QB Mitchell Trubisky is expected to start the preseason finale against the Detroit Lions on Sunday, Aug. 28.

Footballguys view: #20 overall pick Kenny Pickett has closed a large gap over the last month, and it's still possible that he'll start Week 1 against Cincinnati, but Trubisky should still be considered the favorite to start, at least to open the season, unless he faceplants this weekend.

Steelers | QB Pickett Making Late Push?    Thu Aug 25, 04:15 PM

Mark Kaboly, from The Athletic, reports Pittsburgh Steelers rookie QB Kenny Pickett is making a "late push" for starting duties.

Footballguys view: Pickett has been excellent in the preseason, and he's seen an increase in first-team reps in practice because of it. The Steelers may begin the season with Mitchell Trubisky as their starter, but we've always believed Pickett would get in as the top man at some point this season. Perhaps that time is sooner than many thought at the beginning of camp.

Steelers | Pittsburgh to change QB rotation    Thu Aug 18, 06:30 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers QB Mitchell Trubisky will be the starting quarterback for the second preseason game and will be followed by QB Kenny Pickett then QB Mason Rudolph.

Footballguys view: Trubisky will almost certainly be the Week 1 starter against the Bengals, but the Steelers could turn to Pickett early in the season if Trubisky isn't cutting it. Pickett has had a good camp and preseason to date and has moved ahead of Rudolph, which could make Rudolph available via trade to a team that wants to bolster their backup quarterback situation.

Steelers | PIT to use three QBs in preseason game    Thu Aug 11, 04:49 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers QB Mitchell Trubisky will be the starting quarterback during the first preseason game, but QBs Mason Rudolph and Kenny Pickett will also receive playing time.

Footballguys view: Yup, that's what happens in the preseason. Trubisky is the starter, and he'll get a bit of work. Rudolph is the veteran backup, and he should be the no.2 quarterback this year. Pickett, a first-round pick in the 2022 NFL draft, is seen as the potential quarterback of the future.

Steelers | Mitchell Trubisky to start preseason opener    Thu Aug 11, 11:46 AM

Pittsburgh Steelers QB Mitchell Trubisky will start the preseason opener against the Seattle Seahawks on Saturday, Aug. 13.

Footballguys view: No surprise here. Trubisky is the starter, and he should start most games for the Steelers this year. 2022 first-round pick Kenny Pickett is seen as the potential franchise quarterback of the future, but he's running third-string at the moment. If/when the Steelers are out of the playoff hunt, we could see the rookie take over to gain valuable experience.

Steelers | Mitchell Trubisky listed as starter    Fri Aug 5, 05:13 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers QB Mitchell Trubisky is listed as the starting quarterback on the team's initial depth chart.

Footballguys view: Zero surprise here. Trubisky has been, well, not a great option in camp but he's the best the Steelers have right now. Rookie first-round pick Kenny Pickett has worked mostly with the third-team offense. He could take over at some point this year, but not until the Steelers are out of playoff contention. Pickett is the quarterback of the future, but expect Trubisky to start most games for the Steelers in 2022.

Steelers | Mitchell Trubisky meeting expectations?    Wed Aug 3, 09:58 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers QB Mitchell Trubisky is 'on track' after a week of training camp, according to quarterbacks coach Mike Sullivan.

Footballguys view: In the course of one day, there have been 'Trubisky is struggling' stories followed by 'Trubisky is on track.' No matter how much of each story is true, we think everyone can agree that Trubisky is just keeping the seat warm until rookie first-round pick Kenny Pickett is ready to start. Pickett may not start until later in the season if/when the Steelers are out of playoff contention. With Trubisky starting, we don't have much faith the Steelers will be making a postseason run in 2022.

Steelers | Mitch Trubisky struggling    Wed Aug 3, 02:22 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers QB Mitchell Trubisky 'really hasn't been sharp' and has 'struggled' in training camp, per The Athletic's Mark Kaboly.

Footballguys view: Is anybody surprised by this? Trubisky has been a bust to this point in his career, but the former no.2 overall pick (infamously taken ahead of Patrick Mahomes and Deshaun Watson) gets another chance with a new team. The Steelers have 2022 first-round pick, Kenny Pickett, as their future quarterback, but we should see Trubisky open the season as the starter with Mason Rudolph as his backup.

Steelers | Mitchell Trubisky getting all first-team reps    Sun Jul 31, 05:06 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers QB Mitchell Trubisky says he has gotten all first-team reps in training camp thus far. 'Coach [Mike] Tomlin is very transparent about the situation.' Trubisky told NBC Sports' Peter King. 'I've taken all the reps with the ones so far. So I'm just trying not to take any day for granted, just take advantage of this opportunity, continue to lead this team.'

Footballguys view: Trubisky is the team's starter, and his primary backup to begin the season should be Mason Rudolph. The Steelers selected Kenny Pickett in the first round of the 2022 NFL draft, but he's working with the third team and is not yet ready for a larger role. Perhaps late in the season if/when the Steelers are out of playoff contention the team would turn to Pickett to see what they have.

Steelers | Mitch Trubisky endorsed by Cam Heyward    Fri Jul 15, 07:23 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers QB Mitchell Trubisky received a big endorsement from teammate and DL Cameron Heyward in his bid to be the team's starting quarterback in 2022. 'It starts with Mitch. Mitch, we bought him in in free agency,' Heyward said. 'The thing we have to remember about Mitch is he's coming from a situation where in Chicago, they didn't really give him anything. And he still made it to the playoffs... Everything like to say 'Mitch did this wrong, Mitch did that wrong.' Man, Mitch did a lot of things right. Hopefully we have a better team around him. And we're going to support him. Right now, he's our No. 1.'

Footballguys view: Trubisky is the best option for the Steelers right now. Rookie first-round pick Kenny Pickett is seen as the quarterback of the future, but he was mainly working with the third-team offense during minicamp and OTAs. We'll see Trubisky begin the season as the starter and if/when the Steelers are out of contention then Pickett could get some looks as the top guy in an effort to build for the future.

Steelers | QB Pickett Exclusively with Third Team    Tue Jun 28, 02:23 PM

Mark Kaboly, from The Athletic, reports Pittsburgh Steelers rookie QB Kenny Pickett worked exclusively with the third-team offense in OTAs and mandatory minicamp.

Footballguys view: Zero surprise here. Pickett was the team's first-round pick in the 2022 NFL draft, and he was the only quarterback selected on Day 1. However, the Steelers aren't just going to hand him the job as veteran Mitchell Trubisky is expected to win the starting job to begin the regular season. If/when the Steelers are out of it, or if/when Trubisky struggles, then Pittsburgh could turn things over to Pickett as he's seen as the QB of the future.

Steelers | QB Trubisky Has Significant Head Start    Tue Jun 14, 03:52 PM

Mark Kaboly, from The Athletic, reports the quarterback competition for the Pittsbrugh Steelers "will be more for show than substance" and that QB Mitch Trubisky has a significant head start.

Footballguys view: Nobody should really be surprised by this headline - especially in mid-June. Trubisky is a seasoned veteran with plenty of starting experience. Kenny Pickett, 2022 first-round pick, is seen as the quarterback of the future but the team is not going to rush him into the starting lineup. We'll get a better feel for how far Pickett is away from starting during training camp and the preseason. He may not begin the season as the starter, but there's a chance the Steelers turn to Pickett later in the year.

Steelers | Mitchell Trubisky preparing to start    Thu Jun 9, 07:57 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers QB Mitchell Trubisky said he is comfortable with the offense and is preparing as if he will be the starting quarterback this upcoming season.

Footballguys view: Most reports have Trubisky well ahead of Kenny Pickett. The Steelers won't feel pressure to put the first round pick out there even though he has a local connection and Trubisky isn't exactly a fan favorite. Expect a low pass attempt offense with room for Trubisky to be a runner to begin the season.

Steelers | Mitchell Trubisky operating as clear starter    Tue Jun 7, 04:48 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers QB Mitchell Trubisky was 'the clear No. 1 QB' during minicamp, according to Dale Lolley of DK Pittsburgh Sports.

Footballguys view: There's no doubt that Trubisky is at the top of the depth chart as we head towards training camp. Rookie first-round pick Kenny Pickett has a lot to prove in order to pass Trubisky, and he'll get the opportunity to do that in the preseason. We feel Trubisky may begin the season as the starter, with Pickett taking over later in the year - perhaps when the Steelers are out of playoff contention.

Steelers | Mitchell Trubisky working with starters    Mon May 30, 08:57 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers QB Mitchell Trubisky has been working with the first-team offense during offseason workouts.

Footballguys view: Trubisky vs. #20 pick Kenny Pickett will be one of the best (and only) quarterback battles to watch this summer. The veteran gives the offense more athleticism and a better running threat, but Pickett is the future and the team will likely break ties in favor of Pickett if he can be as prepared and consistent as Trubisky in the camp and preseason. Both are just speculative depth in superflex leagues.

Steelers | No Concern About Pickett's Hand Size    Thu May 5, 04:00 PM

Michael David Smith, from Pro Football Talk, reports Pittsburgh Steelers GM Kevin Colbert said the team had zero concern about quarterback Kenny Pickett's hand size. "Honestly, I never paid attention to that," Colbert said. "We look at the results. We watch Kenny play in our environment. ... Can he throw the football? Absolutely. Did he have an excessive fumble rate? No, he didn't. We just judge it on how he played."

Footballguys view: Pickett's small hands were quite the topic in the pre-draft process. Some teams had concerns about his hand size because of his 39 fumbles in college at PITT. The Steelers weren't one of those teams, and they selected him in the first round of the 2022 NFL draft. Pickett will compete with Mitchell Trubisky for the starting job this season and is considered the quarterback of the future.

Steelers | Chase Claypool the odd man out?    Tue Apr 5, 09:53 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers WR Chase Claypool ranks in the top 20 in the NFL in average depth of target over his first two seasons, and QB Mitchell Trubisky has a 46.6 completion percentage on throws that travel more than 10 yards.

Footballguys view: Trubisky is the starter for now with the Steelers, but expect them to select a quarterback in the 2022 NFL draft - perhaps with the no.20 overall pick. Claypool will work with Trubisky to build chemistry, but whatever rookie the Steelers add could push the veteran for the top job.

Pittsburgh Steelers QB Mitchell Trubisky signed with the Steelers this offseason, but general manager Kevin Colbert said the team is still willing to select a quarterback in the 2022 NFL Draft.

Footballguys view: The Steelers have Trubisky as their starter...for now. Mike Tomlin seemingly fell in love with Liberty QB Malik Willis at the Senior Bowl, but he's likely to be off the board when the Steelers pick at no.20 overall. We'll see if they move up for a passer like Willis or Kenny Pickett (PITT).

Steelers | Mitchell Trubisky to Steelers official    Thu Mar 17, 07:12 PM

Free-agent QB Mitchell Trubisky (Bills) officially signed a two-year contract with the Pittsburgh Steelers Thursday, March 17. Financial terms were not disclosed but an earlier report indicated that it is worth at least $14.25 million.

Footballguys view: Trubisky is there to be the starter for the Steelers. They're moving on from the Ben Roethlisberger era, and Trubisky isn't a great replacement. If they let him run the ball perhaps that could improve his numbers, but expect the Steelers to draft a quarterback in the 2022 NFL draft. Mike Tomlin seemed to like what he saw from QB Malik Willis (Liberty) at the Senior Bowl earlier this year.

Updating a previous report, Buffalo Bills impending free-agent QB Mitchell Trubisky plans to sign a two-year contract with the Pittsburgh Steelers worth at least $14.25 million, according to a source. The deal could be worth as much as $27 million with incentives.

Footballguys view: Trubisky is the starter for the Steelers in 2022, at least that's what his money says. We'll see if Mason Rudolph or Dwayne Haskins can win the backup job behind him. The Steelers could also take a quarterback in the 2022 NFL draft to groom for the future.

Steelers | Mitchell Trubisky agrees with PIT    Mon Mar 14, 12:55 PM

Free-agent QB Mitchell Trubisky (Bills) agreed to a two-year deal with the Pittsburgh Steelers Monday, March 14. Financial terms weren't disclosed.

Footballguys view: Trubisky now has to be considered the most likely to start Week 1 for the Steelers. He's got a two-year deal, which is really a one-year "prove it" deal as the team is seemingly moving on from Mason Rudolph - even though Rudolph may still make the final roster. Adding Trubisky does not take them out of the running for a quarterback in the first round of the 2022 NFL Draft. It's the worst kept secret in the league that they like Malik Willis (Liberty), and he's an option for them at no.20 overall.
