Giants | 12 players let go    Sat Aug 31, 07:11 PM

The New York Giants have released QB David Carr, RB Ryan Torain, CB Terrence Frederick, WR Julian Talley, LB Kyle Bosworth, DE Adrian Tracy, DE Adewale Ojomo, DT Marvin Austin, OG Eric Herman, OG Bryant Browning, WR Kevin X. Hardy and WR Marcus Harris.

Footballguys view: Getting rid of Torain is interesting given the fact Andre Brown will be out for some time with a broken leg. Carr was expected to be the primary backup behind Eli Manning but loses out on the job to Curtis Painter. Rookie Ryan Nassib will be the team's third-string developmental QB. Some team should have interest in Carr as veteran depth.

Giants | Update coming Monday on Ryan Torain    Sun Aug 11, 11:54 PM

New York Giants head coach Tom Coughlin said Sunday, Aug. 11, that the team will find out more Monday, Aug. 12, about the status of RB Ryan Torain (concussion), who has been sidelined since last week with a concussion.

Footballguys view: The NFL has a thorough protocol when coming back from a concussion. Torain won't be able to get back on the field until he passes a battery of tests.

Giants | Three expected to compete for No. 3 RB job    Sun Apr 28, 04:48 PM

New York Giants RBs Da'Rel Scott, Ryan Torain and Michael Cox are expected to compete for the No. 3 running back job during offseason workouts and training camp.

Footballguys view: Torain is back, and not on a Mike Shanahan team. Scott has the speed and two years of experience in the organization under his belt, but if he was on track to be a major contributor, he wouldn't have to fight off retreads and marginal prospects to win the #3 job.

Giants | David Wilson expects to compete for starting job    Thu Mar 21, 01:28 PM

New York Giants RB David Wilson said he does not expect the starting running back job to be handed to him and is ready to compete with the other running backs on the roster for the job. RBs Andre Brown, Ryan Torain and Da'Rel Scott are also expected to compete to playing time.

Footballguys view: Wilson has the ability to be a lead RB in the NFL. He's a dangerous runner and explosive receiver out of the backfield. We expect him to be the top RB while Brown works as the complementary power/change of pace RB behind Wilson.

Giants | Two RBs uncertain to return    Thu Feb 7, 12:32 AM

It is uncertain if the New York Giants will bring back either impending free-agent RB Kregg Lumpkin or RB Ryan Torain. Both were brought in late last season for depth.

Footballguys view: We'd be surprised if either of these RBs came back to the Giants but anything is possible. They have David Wilson as their starting back because of the release of Ahmad Bradshaw.

The New York Giants have declared DL Adewale Ojomo, TE Adrien Robinson, DL Chris Canty, CB Jayron Hosley, WR Ramses Barden, RB Ryan Torain, SS Tyler Sash inactive for Week 17.

Giants | New RBs to start on scout team    Thu Nov 29, 11:06 AM

New York Giants head coach Tom Coughlin said new RB Ryan Torain and RB Kregg Lumpkin will start on the scout team. There is a possibility they could play in Week 13.

Footballguys view: We're not expecting much from Torain or Lumpkin if they do play in week 13. Rookie David Wilson should be in line for touches behind starter Ahmad Bradshaw.

Giants | Pass on several RBs    Tue Nov 27, 11:03 PM

The New York Giants gave free-agent RBs Rock Cartwright (49ers), Derrick Coleman (Vikings), Ryan Grant (Redskins) and Cadillac Williams (Rams) tryouts Tuesday, Nov. 27, before settling on RBs Kregg Lumpkin and Ryan Torain.

Footballguys view: Lumpkin is a versatile back who can contribute as a runner of receiver out of the backfield. Torain is more of a banger who can grind it out between the tackles and can be effective in a one cut system.

Giants | Ryan Torain to sign    Tue Nov 27, 04:55 PM

Giants | Two work out    Fri Nov 16, 09:00 AM

The New York Giants worked out RB Ryan Torain and QB Curtis Painter this week.

Footballguys view: The Giants have been working out running backs during their bye week, which is potentially a bad sign for Ahmad Bradshaw. Andre Brown should be rostered in all leagues. He would take over as the feature back if Bradshaw is out, and Brown can play all three downs. First-round pick David Wilson is still not ready for a large role by most accounts.

Redskins | HC explains decision on Ryan Torain    Tue Dec 27, 10:17 PM

Washington Redskins head coach Mike Shanahan explained the decision to released RB Ryan Torain Tuesday, Dec. 27. 'What you look for is consistency at every position,' Shanahan said. 'The people that are consistent get more opportunities. If you're not consistent, you don't get as many opportunities to show us what you can do. But you mentioned Ryan had a big game - that was one of the reasons he's had a chance to get some reps. I think (RB Roy Helu Jr.) has taken advantage of those opportunities more than Ryan has. (RB Evan Royster) obviously this week against a pretty good defensive front - took advantage of an opportunity.'

Redskins | Ryan Torain released    Tue Dec 27, 04:27 PM

The Washington Redskins released RB Ryan Torain Tuesday, Dec. 27, according to a person with knowledge of the situation. The team promoted WR Aldrick Robinson from the practice squad in a corresponding move.

Footballguys view: Torain failed to live up to Mike Shanahan's expectations. He was originally drafted by Shanahan when he was with the Denver Broncos and followed him to the Redskins after sitting out the 2009 season. He was passed on the depth chart by both rookie RBs Roy Helu and Evan Royster.

The Washington Redskins have declared WR David Anderson, DL Kentwan Balmer, FS LaRon Landry, LB Markus White, FB Mike Sellers, RB Ryan Torain, DL Stephen Bowen inactive for Week 15.

Footballguys view: Run blocking TE Richard Quinn is active over slot WR David Anderson, which signals a commitment to the run today. Roy Helu owners should be happy about this development, although it takes some of the shine off of Rex Grossman as a sleeper QB play.

Redskins | Ryan Torain on the way out?     Thu Dec 15, 08:41 AM

Washington Redskins RB Ryan Torain's time with the team is nearing an end. He was inactive last week and did not play in the previous two games. Torain misses too many holes and is only adequate on passing downs.

Footballguys view: Shanahan drafted Torain when he was the head coach of the Denver Broncos but it just hasn't worked out for the big back in the pros. Outside of Roy Helu, Washington's backfield could look much different next year.

Redskins | Reluctant to start Roy Helu    Tue Nov 22, 03:41 PM

The Washington Redskins have been reluctant to start RB Roy Helu Jr. over RB Ryan Torain, despite the fact that Torain has just 71 yards in the last six games, compared to Helu's 122. 'I like Helu. He's doing some great things,' head coach Mike Shanahan said. 'I don't want to put too much pressure on him too early. He's not ready for that. But he's gaining experience, and I like what I see.'   Redskins | Ryan Torain's poor numbers attributed to poor blocking    Tue Nov 1, 10:41 PM

Washington Redskins RB Ryan Torain had a poor stat line in Week 8 against the Buffalo Bills, posting 14 yards on eight carries. The lack of production can mostly be attributed to poor run blocking by the offensive line, as three or more defenders were on the Redskins side of the line on six of his eight rushing attempts.

Footballguys view: Torain looked like he was 2010 form vs. the Rams in week four, but he hasn't recaptured the magic since then, and there's no reason to think it'll be back vs. the stingiest run defense in the league this weekend.

Redskins | Ryan Torain stymied in Week 8    Sun Oct 30, 10:03 PM

Washington Redskins RB Ryan Torain carried eight times for just 14 yards in Week 8 against the Buffalo Bills. He also had a six-yard receptions. Torain did nothing about a Bills rush defense which entered play ranked 30th in the NFL, allowing 135.7 yards per game on the ground. RB Roy Helu Jr. didn't have any carries, and he ended up with 20 yards on three receptions.

Footballguys view: Torain owners have to feel ready to part ways with him after he has not come close to delivering on the promise he showed vs. the Rams in week 4. The Redskins offense is collapsing around him and Torain is barely worth a roster spot right now.

Redskins | Ryan Torain to start    Sun Oct 30, 02:48 PM

Redskins | Ryan Torain is likely starter heading into Week 8    Sun Oct 23, 11:02 PM

Washington Redskins RB Ryan Torain is the likely starter heading into Week 8 following the injury to RB Tim Hightower (knee) in Week 7.

Footballguys view: The Redskins have another good matchup vs. the Bills suspect run defense, so Torain is at least worth a flex play in nonPPR leagues.

Washington Redskins RB Ryan Torain is expected to see a majority of the carries in Week 7 with RBs Tim Hightower and Roy Helu Jr. also getting carries.

Footballguys view: Torain is a Shanahan favorite and has a good chance to have a strong game against a poor Panthers defense.

Redskins | Ryan Torain able to get yards after contact    Wed Oct 19, 12:15 PM

Washington Redskins RB Ryan Torain was able to gain 26 yards after first contact in Week 6 but was only able to gain 22 total yards in the game.

Footballguys view: They don't call him the 'Torain Train' for nothing. He's a bull when running between the tackles and Torain gets stronger as the game goes on. We'll see if Washington can get him on track this week against a poor Carolina defense.

Redskins | Ryan Torain stumbles when given chance    Sun Oct 16, 06:59 PM

Washington Redskins RB Ryan Torain posted just 22 rushing yards on 10 carries in Week 6 against the Philadelphia Eagles. Luckily, RB Roy Helu Jr. did little also, running for just six yards on two carries. Next week, the Redskins face the leaky Carolina Panthers rush defense, but it remains to be seen whether Helu Jr., Torain or RB Tim Hightower (shoulder) will get the nod.

Footballguys view: Torain was set up for huge success against of the worst run defenses in the league today, but the Redskins fell behind early and never got the ground game on track. He is worth holding, if not starting, to see the results next week against a Panthers defense that made Michael Turner look like a young back today.

Redskins | Ryan Torain starting    Sun Oct 16, 12:59 PM

Redskins | Tim Hightower to start in Week 6    Sun Oct 16, 11:44 AM

Redskins | Mike Shanahan still mum on starting RB    Wed Oct 12, 10:17 PM

Washington Redskins head coach Mike Shanahan declined to name a starting running back for the Week 6 game against the Philadelphia Eagles, although he sounded like he might be leaning toward RB Ryan Torain. 'Nice to have (Torain) back at full speed. Everyone saw what he did against the Rams,' Shanahan said. 'Hopefully he can stay at that level.'

Footballguys view: It doesn't matter who takes the first snap, Ryan Torain is the back best suited to rumble through the weak Eagles run defense and the best fantasy play this week.

Redskins | Haven't named starting RB for Week 6    Mon Oct 10, 10:04 PM

Washington Redskins head coach Mike Shanahan declined to name a starting running back for the Week 6 game against the Philadelphia Eagles. 'I'm going to play the best players and we'll see how these guys do,' Shanahan said. 'They have some great competition. As I said before, we have three backs (RBs Roy Helu Jr., Tim Hightower and Ryan Torain) that I really believe in.' Shanahan said they'll see how practice goes and make a decision later this week.

Footballguys view: Torain is still the best play against the weak Eagles run defense.

Redskins | Ryan Torain unsure if he will start    Mon Oct 10, 04:01 PM

Washington Redskins RB Ryan Torain said the coaches will determine if he will start in Week 6 but will be ready to handle the job if given the opportunity.

Footballguys view: Mike Shanahan's going to keep this close to the vest, but we think Torain will get the starting nod.

Redskins | Tim Hightower fine with competition    Mon Oct 3, 01:18 PM

Washington Redskins RB Tim Hightower said he is fine with competing with RBs Ryan Torain and Roy Helu Jr. for playing time because it will make him and the other running backs get better which will help the team.

Footballguys view: The Redskins have a trio of RBs who could rotate as the starter if one of them doesn't perform consistently. It's a headache for fantasy owners. Right now the Shanahan back to own is Ryan Torain. If he fails to produce or is injured then we could see rookie Roy Helu get his shot.

Redskins | Coach explains Tim Hightower decreased role Week 4    Mon Oct 3, 01:11 PM

Washington Redskins head coach Mike Shanahan said he thought RB Tim Hightower looked sluggish during practice this week, which is why the team decided to put RB Ryan Torain into the game Week 4. Shanahan would not name a starter for Week 5 and said the best running back will be used.

Footballguys view: Ryan Torain is the hot waiver wire addition this week as he should be Washington's starter moving forward. He's a long-time Shanahan favorite and will be given every chance to succeed. Torain has durability issues, so his time as the lead back may be very productive but short.

Redskins | Ryan Torain has big game Week 4    Sun Oct 2, 06:28 PM

Washington Redskins RB Ryan Torain rushed for 135 yards and one touchdown on 19 carries against the St. Louis Rams in Week 4.

Footballguys view: The Redskins have a bye next week, but Torain should still be one of the top two pickups at RB. Whatever Mike Shanahan says about the situation, Torain is the back to own right now. He gets great matchups against Philly and Carolina in weeks 6 and 7.

Redskins | Ryan Torain could see action in Week 4     Sat Oct 1, 09:12 AM

Washington Redskins RB Ryan Torain has yet to receive a carry in three games this season; however, if RB Tim Hightower struggles in Week 4, don't be surprised if he gets some carries. Hightower is averaging just 3.5 yards on 59 carries. The Redskins also want to continue getting RB Roy Helu Jr. carries, too, because of his game-breaking ability.

Footballguys view: The jam packed RB corps in Washington is one of the reasons we're cautious when projecting the future production for Hightower. Mike Shanahan loves RBs and Torain has been a favorite of his for years. Helu has shown some good things in limited touches, so the rookie may be getting more involved too.

Redskins | Tim Hightower nearly benched last week    Sat Oct 1, 12:14 AM

Washington Redskins head coach Mike Shanahan said Friday, Sept. 30, that he nearly benched RB Tim Hightower in favor of RB Ryan Torain in the Week 3 game against the Dallas Cowboys. 'I got a lot of belief in (Torain),' Shanahan said. He said Hightower was nearly pulled because he kept slipping.

Footballguys view: Hightower has been dutiful, but not explosive or otherwise adding much to the Redskins running game on his own. Torain has been a Shanahan favorite on and off, and now it appears that he is the back who would get a shot to be the #1 if Hightower is removed, not Roy Helu. Still, Torain has been monumentally injury-prone during his career, so this is no reason to drop Helu in redraft leagues. It does make rostering Torain for his potential trade value and short-term outburst a good idea.

Redskins | Ryan Torain active, does not play    Mon Sep 12, 12:49 AM

Washington Redskins RB Ryan Torain (hand) dressed for Week 1 against the New York Giants, but he did not get into the game. RB Roy Helu Jr. served as the primary backup to starter RB Tim Hightower.

Footballguys view: The Redskins carried the ball 26 times against the Giants. All but one carry was by Tim Hightower. As long as Hightower hangs onto the football there's little room for Torain to do much of anything.

Redskins | Ryan Torain No. 3 RB    Wed Sep 7, 11:59 AM

Washington Redskins RB Ryan Torain is listed as the third running back behind RBs Tim Hightower and Roy Helu Jr. on the team's initial depth chart.

Footballguys view: Torain missed most of the preseason with a hand injury and has seemingly fallen out of favor with Mike Shanahan. That could change in a few weeks if Hightower struggles to hang onto the football. The Redskins starting RB could change more than once this season, and Torain may eventually get his shot.

Redskins | Ryan Torain could see a lot of work Thursday    Thu Sep 1, 03:38 PM

Washington Redskins RB Ryan Torain (hand) could see a good amount of playing time during the last preseason game Thursday, Sept. 1, because he was not able to play in the first three preseason games due to a broken hand.

Footballguys view: Torain is a Shanahan favorite, but has an injury history that reads like War & Peace. Tim Hightower has emerged as the top back in Washington, but if fumble problems arise again we could see a change at the position. Torain, Hightower, and rookie Roy Helu could all get time in the starting lineup this year.
