Ravens | Former player thinks Ray Lewis is setting wrong tone    Thu Jan 31, 06:03 PM

Former New York Giants WR Amani Toomer said Ravens LB Ray Lewis is setting the wrong tone for his team as the Super Bowl approaches, making it all about him and his retirement. 'It's definitely all about him. Once a guy goes to the center of the field, goes into the victory formation on the last play of his last home game ...' Toomer said "I just don't think the Giants or any organization I've ever been a part of, even growing up, would allow somebody to single themselves out like that. If you single yourself out after you make a play, that's one thing. But to walk out on the field reminds me of the WWE, like The Rock coming out. You're becoming a caricature of yourself. It's exhausting. I don't know why somebody would want that.'

Ravens | Amani Toomer critical of Ray Lewis     Thu Jan 31, 11:19 AM

Former NFL WR Amani Toomer criticized Baltimore Ravens LB Ray Lewis for being a selfish player. 'It's definitely all about him. Once a guy goes to the center of the field, goes into the victory formation on the last play of his last home game ...' Toomer said. 'I just don't think the Giants or any organization I've ever been a part of, even growing up, would allow somebody to single themselves out like that.   Cowboys | Jason Witten glad Tony Romo getting respect     Sat Jul 14, 09:29 AM

Dallas Cowboys TE Jason Witten said he is glad QB Tony Romo has received praise from observers, particularly former NFL WR Amani Toomer, who said Romo is a better quarterback than New York Giants QB Eli Manning. 'I think he's an elite league quarterback,' Witten said of Romo. 'Many people have said that. I think that's great that Amani said that, but at the end of the day, Eli is a Super Bowl champ. He's won two out of the last five years. They're doing a lot of good things right up there. They're the poster boys of how you do it and not let adversity get in the way because of where they're at.'

Footballguys view: Witten would be even happier if Romo can get the Cowboys to the Super Bowl.

Cowboys | Tony Romo better than Eli Manning?    Sat Jul 7, 08:24 AM

Former NFL WR Amani Toomer stood by his comments that Dallas Cowboys QB Tony Romo is a better quarterback than New York Giants QB Eli Manning, his former teammate. 'I love Eli, and I respect the hell out of him as a person,' Toomer said. 'But I have to do my job, and I have to look at him beyond what the perception is because the perception doesn't always go hand in hand with the reality.' Statistically, Romo is better than Manning, according to Toomer. 'I was all set - Romo's no good, he's a fourth-quarter choker - and then I started doing my job,' Toomer said. 'I started looking at the numbers. I started looking at the statistics. I started looking at the quarterback rating. And I was shocked. I was shocked at how good Tony Romo's statistics really were. This guy is really impressive.'

Footballguys view: Numbers and stats are deceptive. Pointing to a QB rating is just as ridiculous. Eli Manning has the hardware, and can make plays in pressure situations. Romo is known as a late-game choker who struggles to make a difference when it counts. Toomer also didn't play with the current incarnation of Eli Manning. The veteran QB has vastly improved his game from 2008, the last time Toomer played alongside him.

Chiefs | Williams, Toomer not likely to make final 53    Thu Aug 27, 08:26 PM

Chiefs | WR depth chart a little crazy    Tue Aug 11, 09:15 PM

KCChiefs.com posted the Chiefs first depth chart of the preseason and there were quite a few surprises at the WR position. Terrance Copper and Devard Darling were listed on the first-team. Mark Bradley and Amani Toomer were listed on the second-team. Bobby Engram and Dwayne Bowe were listed on the third-team.

Footballguys view: We know new head coach Todd Haley is trying to set a tone here, but this is a bit much. At the start of the regular season we should see Bowe and Bradley as starters with Toomer or Engram playing in the slot. Darling has been getting good press in training camp, so he could be a surprise player when all is said and done.

Chiefs | Toomer stays late to help new QB    Sat Aug 8, 06:36 PM

Adam Teicher, of the Kansas City Star, reports that new Chiefs WR Amani Toomer stayed for thirty minutes after practice to help new QB Matt Gutierrez.

Footballguys view: Fellow KC Star writer told us on Twitter that he thinks Toomer might have been brought in to push Bobby Engram, who has had some drops and generally isn't having a great camp. Keep tabs on this, because Toomer could be a rosterable receiver in start 3 WR, PPR leagues if he can beat out Engram.

Chiefs | Toomer signs    Tue Aug 4, 01:46 PM

John Clayton, of ESPN.com, reports the Kansas City Chiefs have signed free-agent WR Amani Toomer (Giants) to a one-year deal, according to a source. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: We like this move a lot for Matt Cassel. It gives him another dependable veteran who will be where they are supposed to be in the spread offense. Cassel knows how to quickly read the defense and find the open man, and Toomer will get open with veteran savvy even though his best days are behind him.

Ravens | Harrison, Toomer possibilities?    Tue Jul 21, 09:38 AM

John Clayton, of ESPN.com, reports if the Baltimore Ravens cannot talk WR Derrick Mason out of retirement, they may start to look at possibilities such as free-agent WRs Marvin Harrison (Colts) and Amani Toomer (Giants).

Footballguys view: Seems like Clayton is speculating here, since Toomer is not among the four wideouts Baltimore is working out this Friday, and there has been nothing linking them to Harrison. Maybe the Friday workout is just an attempte by the Ravens to call Mason's bluff, and they'll bring in the real candidates next week if Mason doesn't come back into the fold.

Ravens | Toomer, McCareins not trying out    Mon Jul 20, 05:42 PM

Jamison Hensley, of The Baltimore Sun, reports agents for unrestricted free-agent WR Amani Toomer (Giants) and WR Justin McCareins (Titans) said their clients are not a part of the group of receivers working out for the Baltimore Ravens Friday, July 24.

Footballguys view: McCareins has been too inconsistent to deserve a long look, but Toomer seems like a good fit for what the Ravens need, so we're surprised that he is not among the group.

NFL | Toomer high on several teams' emergency list    Thu Jul 2, 09:53 PM

Jason LaCanfora, of the NFL Network, reports that free agent WR Amani Toomer has fielded calls from a few teams and is high on several teams' "emergency list."

Footballguys view: This means that Toomer should get some work once injury strikes a key wide receiver and a team needs a veteran who can step in right away and not need too much time to ramp up. He's still unlikely to have any fantasy value this year.

Bears | Have not discussed Toomer    Sun May 10, 07:37 PM

Bears | Interested in Toomer?    Sat May 9, 08:53 AM

Vaughn McClure, of the Chicago Tribune, reports the Chicago Bears placed a phone call to free-agent WR Amani Toomer (Giants), according to Steve Wyche, of the NFL Network. However, according to a source, the Bears did not place the call to Toomer. The Bears might be intrigued, but they're not jumping at the opportunity.

Footballguys view: The Bears have several young WRs on the roster that could push for significant playing time. Juaguin Iglesias is a perfect complimentary receiver that could work underneath routes. Johnny Knox has blazing speed and could challenge for the starting slot role. Derek Kinder is coming back from the knee injury that cost him the entire 2007 season for the Pitt Panthers, and could contribute because of his run after the catch ability. Chicago may sign Toomer because he would have more experience than anyone else on their roster. However, if they like what they see in the young guys Toomer may be left to look for work elsewhere.
