Browns | Re-sign Tyler Thigpen    Tue Dec 23, 11:37 AM

The Cleveland Browns re-signed QB Tyler Thigpen Tuesday, Dec. 23. Terms of the contract were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: With Johnny Manziel out and Brian Hoyer unlikely to play, the Browns need all the QB help they can get. Thigpen is an athletic southpaw with a big arm. He's got plenty of experience and could fill in if necessary.

Browns | Rex Grossman signs    Tue Aug 12, 09:50 AM

The Cleveland Browns signed free-agent QB Rex Grossman (Redskins) to an undisclosed deal and waived QB Tyler Thigpen.

Footballguys view: Grossman is reunited with Kyle Shanahan. The Browns could carry three QBs, but it is also possible that they are willing to trade Brian Hoyer now that Johnny Manziel's development appears to be on track. Hoyer worked with Texans head coach Bill O'Brien when both were in New England and the Texans are possibly regretting handing the keys over to Ryan Fitzpatrick. It's a longshot, but something to keep in mind when trying to make sense of this move.

  NFL | Veteran-heavy 2015 UFA QB class    Sun Jun 15, 12:26 PM

The NFL's scheduled unrestricted free-agent quarterback class for 2015 features 14 players who will be at least 30 years of age, including Indianapolis Colts QB Matt Hasselbeck (39), St. Louis Rams QB Shaun Hill (35), Arizona Cardinals QB Carson Palmer (35), New York Jets QB Michael Vick (34), Cincinnati Bengals QB Jason Campbell (33), New Orleans Saints QB Luke McCown (33), Seattle Seahawks QB Tarvaris Jackson (32), Kansas City Chiefs QB Alex Smith (31), Oakland Raiders QB Trent Edwards (31), Chicago Bears QB Jordan Palmer (31), Detroit Lions QB Dan Orlovsky (31), Cleveland Browns QB Tyler Thigpen (31) and Miami Dolphins QB Matt Moore (30). Estranged Dallas Cowboys QB Kyle Orton (32) is also scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent, although he is reportedly leaning toward retirement.

Footballguys view: Any team looking for a solid veteran backup will have plenty to choose from. The only one of this list who could still be an effective starter is Carson Palmer. We'll see if Arizona tries to sign him to a new deal if he impresses in 2014.

Browns | Brian Hoyer receives first snaps    Wed May 21, 12:03 PM

Cleveland Browns QB Brian Hoyer received the first snaps during offensive drills Tuesday, May 21. He was followed by QB Tyler Thigpen and QB Johnny Manziel.

Footballguys view: By all outward indications, the Browns are going to make Johnny Manziel earn everything. Manziel was not handed the starting job at Texas A&M, so he has had to win his way up the depth chart before, with success. He is still likely to start at some point this season, and his willingness to run means that he'll be relevant in fantasy leagues when he does.

Browns | Sign Tyler Thigpen     Thu May 1, 02:05 PM

Updating a previous report, Cleveland Browns head coach Mike Pettine indicated the team may decide to sign free-agent QB Vince Young (Eagles) and QB Tyler Thigpen (Bills) after their minicamp. Both are participating in the minicamp on a tryout basis.

Footballguys view: The Browns need camp arms. They currently have Brian Hoyer as their top quarterback, but he's recovering from a knee injury he suffered last year.

Browns | Likely to sign quarterback    Tue Apr 29, 02:14 PM

The Cleveland Browns are likely to sign QB Vince Young (Eagles) or QB Tyler Thigpen (Bills) after the team completes a three-day minicamp this week.

Footballguys view: We'd put our money on Young. He has a prior working relationship with Browns QB coach Dowell Loggains dating back to their days in Tennessee. Young has the athleticism to fit nicely in OC Kyle Shanahan's system.

The Cleveland Browns are having free-agent QB Tyler Thigpen (Bills) try out for them this week at their three-day minicamp that begins Tuesday, April 29.

Footballguys view: Thigpen could be an interesting camp arm for the Browns. He's got the athleticism to work in the Kyle Shanahan system. If added, Thigpen would have to be considered a long-shot to make the roster.

The Seattle Seahawks worked out free-agent QBs Tyler Thigpen (Bills), Seneca Wallace (Browns), Matt Leinart (Raiders) and Brady Quinn (Chiefs) Monday, April 8, but will take some time before signing one of them.

The Seattle Seahawks are scheduled to meet with free-agent QBs Matt Leinart (Raiders), Brady Quinn (Chiefs), Seneca Wallace (Browns) and Tyler Thigpen (Bills). The meetings are expected to include workouts for each quarterback.

Seahawks | Tyler Thigpen still expected to sign    Tue Apr 2, 10:00 PM

Free-agent QB Tyler Thigpen (Bills) is still expected to visit with the Seattle Seahawks and sign sometime soon.

Seahawks | Expected to land Tyler Thigpen    Mon Apr 1, 12:19 PM

The Seattle Seahawks are expected to land free-agent QB Tyler Thigpen (Bills) as their backup quarterback.

Seahawks | Could have interest in Tyler Thigpen    Fri Mar 29, 03:28 PM

The Seattle Seahawks may pursue free-agent QB Tyler Thigpen (Bills) if they decide to trade QB Matt Flynn.

Footballguys view: Thigpen actually was drafted by the Vikings in the 7th round when Seahawks current offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell occupied that position in Minnesota. Thigpen is mobile and he would probably cut it in a pinch with the weapons he has to work with in Seattle.

Vikings | Could show interest in three QBs    Wed Mar 6, 12:08 PM

The Minnesota Vikings could show interest in Buffalo Bills impending free-agent QB Tyler Thigpen, Miami Dolphins impending free-agent QB Matt Moore and Cincinnati Bengals impending free-agent QB Bruce Gradkowski once free agency begins because they will be looking for a No. 2 quarterback.

Footballguys view: Joe Webb is not the answer behind Christian Ponder. Moore and Gradkowski make the most sense for the Vikings with Gradkowski likely being the cheaper option.

Bills | Tyler Thipgen unlikely to re-sign    Wed Jan 16, 12:47 PM

The Buffalo Bills are not expected to re-sign impending free-agent QB Tyler Thigpen because he was originally brought in because of his knowledge of former head coach Chan Gailey's offense.

Footballguys view: This is one of many expected changes to the Bills. Thigpen is out and the team should draft a QB in the first- or second-round of the 2013 NFL Draft to compete with starter Ryan Fitzpatrick. Most think Ryan Nassib (Syracuse) is their top choice because of his experience working under new head coach Doug Marrone.

Bills | Ryan Fitzpatrick to start Week 17     Mon Dec 24, 02:06 PM

Buffalo Bills head coach Chan Gailey said QB Ryan Fitzpatrick will start Week 17 because he gives the team the best chance to win. Gailey said QBs Tyler Thigpen and Tarvaris Jackson will not see playing time during the game.

Footballguys view: This could be the final game in the Fitzpatrick (and Gailey) era. We expect the team to look for an upgrade at the QB position this offseason. They should be in position to draft a QB in the first-round like Matt Barkley (USC).

Bills | Tarvaris Jackson to remain No. 3 QB     Wed Oct 3, 11:45 AM

Buffalo Bills QB Tarvaris Jackson is expected to remain third on the depth chart the rest of this season. Head coach Chan Gailey does not envision Jackson challenging backup QB Tyler Thigpen. 'It would be very tough for Tarvaris to challenge for that spot this year because of limited reps (in practice),' Gailey said. 'Fitz takes almost every rep we have on offense during the course of the week. The backup gets very few reps through the course of practice. So it's hard for him to get the reps necessary to make a viable charge at this point for that position.'

Bills | Tyler Thigpen accepted pay cut to stay    Sun Sep 2, 09:26 PM

Buffalo Bills QB Tyler Thigpen took a $1 million pay cut to remain with the team.

Bills | Tyler Thigpen unlikely to make roster    Thu Aug 30, 07:59 PM

Buffalo Bills QB Tyler Thigpen likely will not make the final roster because of the addition of QB Tarvaris Jackson.

Bills | Tarvaris Jackson likely to play in preseason game    Tue Aug 28, 01:27 PM

Buffalo Bills QB Tarvaris Jackson will likely have a chance to play in the team's final preseason game against the Detroit Lions Thursday, Aug. 30. Jackson will compete with QB Tyler Thigpen for the backup job. It isn't ruled out that both Jackson, Thigpen and WR Brad Smith will all be on the roster.

Footballguys view: Jackson should beat out Thigpen for the team's backup job behind Ryan Fitzpatrick. Chan Gailey knows how to get the best out of his QB and Jackson gives them quality veteran depth at the position.

Bills | Vince Young emerging in No. 2 QB battle     Sat Aug 18, 09:54 AM

Buffalo Bills QB Vince Young likely moved ahead in the race to be the team's No. 2 quarterback after a strong performance Friday, Aug. 17. Young was 8-of-14 passing for 123 yards. His counterpart, QB Tyler Thigpen, was 8-of-15 passing for 56 yards and an interception in the game.

Footballguys view: If Thigpen loses out on the QB2 job he could get cut. With his starting experience there's likely going to be teams interested in him on the open market.

Buffalo Bills backup QB Vince Young will quarterback the team's second-string offense during their second preseason game. He was hindered somewhat in their last game by the team's third-string offensive line. Young is competing with Tyler Thigpen for the backup quarterback duties.

Bills | Hoping to divide QB reps equally Friday     Thu Aug 16, 12:33 PM

The Buffalo Bills are hoping QBs Ryan Fitzpatrick, Tyler Thigpen and Vince Young receive roughly 20 reps each in the team's preseason game Friday, Aug. 17. '(It) did not happen last week,' Gailey said of the playing time. 'Tyler got 19 and Vince got 30. We would like to stay at 20 and 20 if we can.   Bills | Tyler Thigpen, Vince Young struggling    Wed Aug 1, 03:44 PM

Buffalo Bills head coach Chan Gailey said QBs Tyler Thigpen and Vince Young have been inconsistent during practice and neither has taken the lead for the No. 2 quarterback job. 'They both have not done anything to distance themselves from the other,' Gailey said. 'Both - some things are good one day and some things are bad one day. We just have to keep letting them play. They've got to get a feel of the speed of the game with pads, feeling the pass rush around them, doing the little things they do best.' Young has had trouble getting comfortable with the offense and Thigpen has not shown the accuracy the team wants from his passing.

Bills | Neither backup QB distancing themselves    Tue Jul 31, 10:52 PM

Buffalo Bills head coach Chan Gailey said Tuesday, July 31, that neither QB Vince Young, nor QB Tyler Thigpen, is distancing himself in the race for the No. 2 quarterback job behind starter QB Ryan Fitzpatrick. 'Neither one of them has done anything; they both (have done) some things good one day and some things that are bad one day,' Gailey said. 'We just have to keep letting them play.'

Footballguys view: If Young wins the job, he could have value in the event of a Ryan Fitzpatrick injury because of his running ability, but it sounds like the winner of this competition will be by default.

Bills | No. 2 QB still undecided     Sat Jul 21, 11:06 AM

Buffalo Bills head coach Chan Gailey remained coy regarding the battle for the team's No. 2 quarterback job, only saying QBs Tyler Thigpen and Vince Young will battle it out during training camp and the preseason. 'I think it's going to be a good competition,' Gailey said. 'Tyler has the advantage of being here and being in the system. Vince has the advantage of playing in games and the experience. Vince has more experience than Tyler. Tyler has more experience in this offense than Vince. So there's a trade-off there. It depends on who ends up doing the best job during the course of the entire preseason.'

Footballguys view: We have a feeling Young should win this job. He's more physically gifted than Thigpen and has a stronger arm. We'll see this competition play itself out during training camp. The loser of this battle has a good chance of being cut by the team if they choose to only carry two QBs on the roster.

Bills | Tyler Thigpen, Vince Young rotate in No. 2 QB spot    Sat Jun 23, 09:18 PM

Buffalo Bills QBs Tyler Thigpen and Vince Young rotated in and out with the second unit during organized team activities (OTAs) and minicamp. The two are expected to continue their battle into training camp, with the loser likely being cut. Head coach Chan Gailey has previously stated WR Brad Smith will be used as the No. 3 quarterback, mainly for his work in the Wildcat package.

Footballguys view: Thigpen has the experience in Gailey's offense, but Young is the more physically gifted QB. With Smith essentially locked in as the third-string guy the loser of the battle for QB2 may get cut.

Bills | Vince Young having problems picking up offense    Thu Jun 21, 07:08 PM

Buffalo Bills head coach Chan Gailey said QB Vince Young is having trouble picking up the nuances of the offense because Gailey has added things to the playbook each of the last two seasons. 'It would not have been as hard two years ago, but we are in so much more of an advanced stage now than we were two years ago. He is trying to learn what the base concepts are and how we have advanced to where we are today without the benefit of going through the baby steps,' Gailey said.

Footballguys view: We've heard both Young is looking good and Young is struggling so far this offseason. Thigpen has a head start on Young because he has more experience in Gailey's offense. This is a battle that should last throughout training camp.

Bills | Ryan Fitzpatrick secure as No. 1 QB     Thu Jun 21, 09:34 AM

Buffalo Bills QB Ryan Fitzpatrick's job as the team's starting quarterback appears safe as QBs Vince Young and Tyler Thigpen have struggled in offseason practices. Young is considered the favorite for the backup role, although he and Thigpen have had timing issues in the passing game.

Footballguys view: No question Fitzpatrick is the clear cut starter. Young and Thigpen are backup caliber QBs who will compete in training camp. WR/QB Brad Smith is likely going to be the team's third-string QB.

Buffalo Bills QB Vince Young looks like the clear-cut favorite early on in the battle to serve as the team's primary backup to starter QB Ryan Fitzpatrick. Young is battling QB Tyler Thigpen for the job.

Footballguys view: Young's skill set is perfect for Chan Gailey's system and he could thrive if given the chance to start. The loser of this competition is likely to be cut as WR/QB Brad Smith is pretty much penciled in as the team's third-string QB.

Bills | Tyler Thigpen works ahead of Vince Young    Tue Jun 19, 11:13 PM

Buffalo Bills QB Tyler Thigpen worked as the No. 2 quarterback in practice Tuesday, June 19, at minicamp, while QB Vince Young worked as the No. 3. Earlier reports have head coach Chan Gailey leaning toward using WR Brad Smith as the third QB, with the loser of the Thigpen-Young battle failing to earn a roster spot.

Footballguys view: This battle should last throughout training camp. If Young can't beat out Thigpen for the backup job behind Ryan Fitzpatrick it's not a good sign for his future in the league. Thigpen has plenty of experience working under HC Chan Gailey, but Young is the superior talent.

Bills | Ryan Fitzpatrick has ugly game in Week 14    Sun Dec 11, 10:57 PM

Buffalo Bills QB Ryan Fitzpatrick completed 13 of 34 passes for 176 yards, no touchdowns and two interceptions in Week 14 against the San Diego Chargers. He was lifted late in the blowout loss in favor of QB Tyler Thigpen, who completed two of his three passes for 19 yards with one interception. Fitzpatrick has one or fewer TD throws in five of his past six games, and he has not hit 300 passing yards since Week 3.
