Chiefs | Ben Tate to work out in KC    Mon Oct 12, 11:55 AM

Free-agent RB Ben Tate (Browns) will work out for the Kansas City Chiefs Tuesday, Oct. 13, according to a source.

Footballguys view: With Jamaal Charles done for the year, the Chiefs will use Charcandrick West and Knile Davis to carry the rock. If Tate is added, don't expect a lot from the veteran. He's no longer the player he used to be, and Tate struggled in each one of his THREE (Browns, Vikings, Steelers) stops last year.

Lions | Ben Tate to work out for Detroit    Mon Jun 8, 06:44 PM

Free-agent RB Ben Tate (Steelers) is scheduled to work out for the Detroit Lions Tuesday, June 9, according to a source.

Footballguys view: The Lions are likely just updating their emergency list here. We like the collection of running backs they have for 2015. Veteran Joique Bell will try to keep rookie Ameer Abdullah at bay for the starting job while Theo Riddick carves out a role as a change-of-pace back. We're really interested in seeing if UDFA rookie Zach Zenner can make an impact in training camp and the preseason.

Cowboys | Ben Tate working out for Dallas    Thu May 21, 09:42 AM

Free-agent RB Ben Tate (Steelers) is working out for the Dallas Cowboys Thursday, May 21.

Footballguys view: Tate would be an interesting addition to the Cowboys' backfield. Currently, Darren McFadden can be penciled in as the starter but he's been so injury prone during his pro career that Dallas better have quality options behind him. Tate bounced between three different teams last year (CLE,MIN,PIT) and has gotten little interest on the open market.

Steelers | Le'Veon Bell expected to be suspended    Wed Feb 11, 05:58 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers RB Le'Veon Bell is expected to be suspended for the first two games of the 2015 season as a result of his August arrest on marijuana charges, according to sources. Bell will spend 15 months on probation as part of the first-offender's program and will have his driver's license suspended for 60 days. RBs Josh D. Harris and Ben Tate took over when Bell missed the team's playoff loss to the Baltimore Ravens.

Footballguys view: The Steelers will likely look to the draft or free agency to improve their backup plans behind Bell. We'll see a potential starter while Bell is out rise to the top during training camp.

Steelers | Steelers sign Ben Tate    Tue Dec 30, 02:43 PM

The Pittsburgh Steelers signed RB Ben Tate (Vikings) Tuesday, Dec. 30. Terms of the contract were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: This move gives the team veteran depth at the position. Tate was bounced from both the Browns and the Vikings this year after signing with Cleveland as a free agent in the offseason. He'll serve as a backup for undrafted rookie Josh Harris if Le'Veon Bell can't play against the Ravens on Wild Card weekend.

Steelers | Ben Tate visiting    Tue Dec 30, 09:08 AM

Free-agent RB Ben Tate (Vikings) is visiting with the Pittsburgh Steelers Tuesday, Dec. 30. He could be signed by the end of the day.

Footballguys view: The Steelers could use a veteran with the experience that Tate has. He was bounced from both the Browns and Vikings roster this year, so he's not a great add--but the Steelers don't have much of a choice. They may be without superstar Le'Veon Bell in their playoff game against the Ravens on Saturday.

Vikings | Release Ben Tate    Tue Dec 23, 06:19 PM

The Minnesota Vikings released RB Ben Tate Tuesday, Dec. 23.

Footballguys view: This makes two teams that have released Tate in 2014. He was originally signed in free agency earlier this year by the Cleveland Browns. Tate failed to impress in Cleveland, and they decided to let him go. The Vikings picked him up, but Tate barely saw the field in Minnesota. A free agent, we can't imagine many teams being interested in the veteran back.

Vikings | Ben Tate, Joe Banyard may see more time    Mon Dec 8, 05:16 PM

Minnesota Vikings RBs Ben Tate and Joe Banyard could receive more carries, because head coach Mike Zimmer thought RB Matt Asiata received too many carries in Week 14. Asiata received 19 of the 23 carries during the game.

Footballguys view: Asiata is an average talent--he's basically a fullback who runs hard and can catch a few passes out of the backfield. Tate was added earlier this year after the Browns released him. Banyard was a star RB at UTEP, but injuries slowed down his college career. The most talented back is arguably Banyard, but this looks like an ugly 3-headed RBBC that fantasy owners should avoid.

Vikings | Ben Tate will play    Sun Nov 23, 09:45 AM

Minnesota Vikings RB Ben Tate will be active Sunday, Nov. 23, and have a role in Week 12. RB Matt Asiata will be inactive.

Footballguys view: Having an inexperienced backup in the system could be a good thing for Jerick McKinnon's prospects today against the sometime weak Green Bay run defense.

Vikings | Jerick McKinnon still the lead back    Thu Nov 20, 01:52 PM

Minnesota Vikings RB Jerick McKinnon (back) will retain the lead-back role, even after the team claimed RB Ben Tate off waivers from the Cleveland Browns Wednesday, Nov. 19, according to offensive coordinator Norv Turner. Turner said Tate was brought in for insurance because both McKinnon and RB Matt Asiata (concussion) were dealing with injuries this week. McKinnon said he will be ready for Week 12 against the Green Bay Packers. However, Asiata's status is in doubt. "We're excited about Jerick and what he's done and I see him as our running back,' Turner said. "He's been limited in practice last week and couldn't practice (Wednesday) So you got to protect yourself, obviously with Matt not being able to practice (Wednesday) and in doubt as to whether he'll play or not.'

Footballguys view: It's going to be a tough matchup and the Vikings have had so many issues along the offensive line that it limits McKinnon's upside an buries him as an RB3.

Vikings | Ben Tate gives Vikes depth    Wed Nov 19, 05:07 PM

Minnesota Vikings RB Ben Tate gives the team much-needed depth at the running back position, with RBs Jerick McKinnon (back) and Matt Asiata (concussion) both missing practice Wednesday, Nov. 19.

Footballguys view: The Vikings needed to add better depth, especially after Adrian Peterson's suspension was upheld by an independent arbitrator. McKinnon leads the team with 484 yards and a 4.9 yards per carry average, while Asiata has six rushing touchdowns and a one receiving TD, but he has just 3.3 yards per carry.

Vikings | Vikings claim Ben Tate    Wed Nov 19, 04:11 PM

Free-agent RB Ben Tate (Browns) was claimed off waivers by the Minnesota Vikings Wednesday, Nov. 19.

Footballguys view: That didn't take long. The Vikings saw Adrian Peterson suspended for the rest of this year, and they needed more help at the position. This is certainly a downgrade for the fantasy value of both Jerick McKinnon and Matt Asiata. Look for the Vikings to initially use all three RBs in some sort of RBBC. Tate is more talented than Asiata, and he's got more experience than McKinnon. He could end up emerging in Minnesota, but for now we see Tate as a RB3.

Dolphins | Miami unlikely to claim Ben Tate    Wed Nov 19, 12:15 PM

Jaguars | No interest in two RBs    Wed Nov 19, 09:05 AM

Free-agent RBs Ben Tate (Browns) and LeGarrette Blount (Steelers) spark no interest from the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Footballguys view: The Jaguars have found a lead back in Denard Robinson. He has done a great job this year as a runner and receiver out of the backfield. Toby Gerhart is a good reserve back behind Robinson, so there's no need for the team to have any interest in either Blount or Tate.

Colts | Researching Ben Tate    Tue Nov 18, 11:10 PM

The Indianapolis Colts have started researching free-agent RB Ben Tate (Browns), including his character and potential fit in the team's scheme, and appear interested in possibly claiming him off waivers from the Cleveland Browns, a source said Tuesday, Nov. 18.

Footballguys view: They should be researching Tate after losing Ahmad Bradshaw (leg) for the rest of the season. Right now, Dan Herron is going to backup Trent Richardson but that's not an inspiring option. The team could perhaps feel that Tate is an upgrade and sign the veteran.

Broncos | Denver not expected to sign RB    Tue Nov 18, 05:52 PM

Free-agent RBs Ben Tate (Browns) and LeGarrette Blount (Steelers) aren't expected to draw interest from the Denver Broncos.

Footballguys view: It is late into the season and is tough for a new running back to learn a Peyton Manning-led system. The Broncos are thin at running back right now with Ronnie Hillman and Montee Ball banged up. C.J. Anderson should continue to be the lead back, and Juwan Thompson his primary backup. Rookie Kapri Bibbs should be active for the first time this year in Week 12 against the Dolphins.

Steelers | Interested in Ben Tate?    Tue Nov 18, 02:32 PM

Free-agent RB Ben Tate (Browns) may already have drawn interest from the Pittsburgh Steelers after being released by the Cleveland Browns Tuesday, Nov. 18. A Steelers staff member reportedly called a Cleveland Browns staff member asking about Tate's release.

Footballguys view: We could see this happening. The Steelers have a need behind Le'Veon Bell since they themselves released LeGarrette Blount on Tuesday. Tate is out of a job for now, but it won't be long before some team takes a chance on the veteran back.

Browns | Ben Tate waived    Tue Nov 18, 11:19 AM

The Cleveland Browns have waived RB Ben Tate.

Footballguys view: The Browns are moving on with rookie backs Isaiah Crowell and Terrance West. Tate may draw some interest from teams like the Colts or the Steelers. He wasn't doing much for the team this year, and he certainly was a disappointment as a free agent signing. We'll see how long it takes Tate to find a new job.

Browns | RB carousel will continue in CLE    Mon Nov 17, 10:56 AM

Cleveland Browns RBs Ben Tate, Isaiah Crowell and Terrance West will continue to be mixed and matched on a weekly basis, according to head coach Mike Pettine. Crowell had a critical lost fumble Sunday, Nov. 16, but the team kept going to him despite the miscue. 'It's something we'll look at week to week,' Pettine said. 'We're not just going to pick one. When you go in a game-plan situation you look at what gives us the best chance to win.'

Footballguys view: Round and round it goes, where it stops nobody knows! This is not what fantasy owners wanted to hear. Just when it looked like Terrance West was their guy, we get surprise news on Sunday morning that Isaiah Crowell is the starter. We believe Crowell is the most talented back on the roster, but his ball-security problems could put him in the doghouse with the staff. All three backs are talented--and great fits in the offense. Deciphering which one is going to be the best fantasy play on a weekly basis is complicated.

Browns | Ben Tate disappointed with role    Tue Nov 11, 01:47 PM

Cleveland Browns RB Ben Tate said he's frustrated with his role in the offense, and he thinks he's been running well.

Footballguys view: Tate is frustrated, and his fantasy owners share the same sentiment. It's a flavor of the week approach at RB for the Browns. Right now, the favorite back seems to be rookie Terrance West. Tate and Isaiah Crowell are both talented, but will have to wait for a larger role.

Browns | Terrance West earns more touches    Sun Nov 2, 11:36 PM

Cleveland Browns RB Terrance West carried a team-high 15 times for 48 yards in the Week 9 game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, surging ahead of RB Ben Tate who has held to just three yards on 10 carries. RB Isaiah Crowell did not receive an offensive snap. 'When you looked at the tape and really compared the three, we feel (Tate's) really coming on,' head coach Mike Pettine said Sunday, Nov. 2. 'He's earned those touches, and when he gets out there he does make the most of them.'

Footballguys view: The Browns backfield is a cramped mess right now. West, starter Ben Tate and rookie Isaiah Crowell all have talent but they're splitting time and touches in different ways almost every week. Nobody has yet to emerge, and fantasy owners are left grasping at straws most weeks.

Browns | Isaiah Crowell wants to be more involved    Fri Oct 31, 05:11 PM

Cleveland Browns RB Isaiah Crowell, who played just three snaps and had one carry for one yard in Week 8, is hoping he'll be more involved in the game plan in Week 9 against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. RB Ben Tate played 31 of 56 snaps and had 15 carries for 26 yards last week, while RB Terrance West played 22 snaps and had seven carries for 11 yards. Crowell continues to lead the team in average yards per carry (4.9) and rushing touchdowns (four). He dropped two pitches and had a fumble in Week 6, but Crowell insists that he doesn't have ball-security issues.

Footballguys view: Crowell appears to be the most talented back on Cleveland's roster and the Browns have expressed a desire for one back to emerge, but he hasn't gotten that shot yet because of fumbles and practice performances. The loss of all-world center Alex Mack has taken the luster off of the most dominant running game of the first half of the season, so chasing Crowell's speculation value is also losing its shine, but don't be surprised if he finishes the season atop the depth chart.

Browns | Ben Tate expected to start    Thu Oct 2, 02:46 PM

Cleveland Browns RB Ben Tate (knee) is expected to start in Week 5 if he is able to play because Tate's experience allows the team to expand their playbook. RB Terrance West has been in front of RB Isaiah Crowell on the depth chart, but head coach Mike Pettine said Crowell may deserve more playing time. 'It's not an easy problem because if you spread it too thin over three then you run the risk of none of them really getting into the groove of the game,' Pettine said. 'If you restrict it to just two, now you're looking at potentially having a guy that's fresh on the sideline that's not doing anything. It is an issue and you kind of have to play it by ear.'

Footballguys view: Here are two phrases no fantasy owner wants to hear: "running back by committee" and "hot hand." The Tennessee Titans are a decent matchup but good luck figuring out who will get most of the carries with Tate, Isaiah Crowell and Terrance West all in the same backfield. We have Tate and Crowell as RB3s and West as a distant RB5. Any of them can go off which means any of them might be relegated to sideline duty. It's so murky, it might be best to go with a matchup equal to Cleveland's in a backfield with less questions.

Browns | Ben Tate on track    Thu Oct 2, 01:35 PM

Cleveland Browns RB Ben Tate (knee) is on track to play in Week 5, according to head coach Mike Pettine.

Footballguys view: Head coach Mike Pettine is talking about going with the hot hand, and if your stomach just did a flip-flop, you aren't alone. The Tennessee Titans are a decent matchup but that's one crowded backfield in Cleveland with Tate, Isaiah Crowell and Terrance West. We have Tate as a solid RB3, with Crowell not far behind. West is a distant RB5. Any of them can go off which means any of them might be relegated to sideline duty. You can start them--and Tate or Crowell would be the choice--but we have no idea how this will play out, so it might be best to go with a matchup equal to Cleveland's in a backfield with less questions.

Browns | Ben Tate returns to practice    Tue Sep 30, 01:11 PM

Cleveland Browns RB Ben Tate (knee) returned to practice Tuesday, Sept. 30, for the first time since spraining his right knee in the season opener Sept. 7. It means that Tate is likely to return to action in Week 5 against the Tennessee Titans. He's expected to return to the starting lineup, too, despite the solid play of RBs Terrance West and Isaiah Crowell in his absence. "That's what we brought Tate here for, to be the starter," running backs coach Wilbert Montgomery said last week. "He's the No. 1 running back in this offense. Right now, you can say we miss him. We miss his experience. We miss his leadership with the group. Speaking from that standpoint, we'll be open arms and welcome to have Ben back into the fold." Tate was wearing a brace on his knee while doing individual drills Tuesday.

Footballguys view: Now the fun begins. Will Tate get his starting job back when he's been outplayed by both West and Crowell? That looks like the plan right now, but he had better play better (and stay healthy), or the team can just turn things back over to the rookie duo.

Cleveland Browns RB Ben Tate (knee) is not participating in practice Thursday, Sept. 18.

Footballguys view: So we're once again looking at the Dynamic Duo of Terrance Williams and Isaiah Crowell. West looks like a decent RB2 play to us, with Crowell a shakier RB4. The matchup isn't easy and the Ravens don't let up many (right now, any) rushing touchdowns so either guy is likely to get you some yards and that's it.

Footballguys view: The Browns have two capable rookie backs behind Tate in Terrance West and Isaiah Crowell. Fantasy owners should add one or both just in case this Tate injury is serious. He's never played a full 16-game schedule, so it shouldn't come as any surprise that Tate is once again banged up.

RBs Terrance West and Isaiah Crowell replaced Tate, with West rushing for 100 yards and Crowell scoring a pair of touchdowns.

Footballguys view: The Browns running game gashed the Steelers, and it could have success next week against the Saints defense that gave up big plays to multiple Falcons backs today. Terrance West would be the preferred pickup on the waiver wire getting the bulk of the worst, but Isaiah Crowell scooped up the scores, so he shouldn't be left on the waiver wire, either.
