49ers | Sign Phillip Tanner    Wed Dec 17, 02:26 PM

The San Francisco 49ers signed RB Phillip Tanner (Bills) Wednesday, Dec. 17. Terms of the contract were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: The 49ers are looking for running back help because both Frank Gore (concussion) and Carlos Hyde (ankle, back) are banged up. We could see Alphonso Smith get the start for the 49ers this week.

Bills | Phillip Tanner signing    Tue Oct 21, 01:02 PM

The Buffalo Bills are signing free-agent RB Phillip Tanner (Cowboys) Tuesday, Oct. 21.

Footballguys view: The Bills had sniffed around the league to find additional RB help. They make the move to add Tanner here, but there's little fantasy value from this transaction. While Fred Jackson and C.J. Spiller are out, we'll see the team move forward with a RBBC featuring Anthony Dixon and Bryce Brown.

  Cowboys | 19 cut    Sat Aug 30, 05:43 PM

The Dallas Cowboys released RB D.J. Footballguys view: Byrd was an intriguing talent to keep tabs on in super deep dynasty leagues. He has a size/speed combination that can create mismatch problems. We'll see if he can stick around on the practice squad.

The Dallas Cowboys have signed free-agent RB Phillip Tanner (Colts). Terms of the contract were not disclosed. The team also waived CB B.W. Webb.

Colts | Sign Phillip Tanner    Tue Jul 29, 03:29 PM

The Indianapolis Colts signed RB Phillip Tanner (Cowboys) Tuesday, July 29. Terms of the contract were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: With Vick Ballard (Achilles') lost for the year, the Colts needed additional help at the running back position. Tanner is an intent runner between the tackles, but is no more than third on the depth chart right now behind Trent Richardson and Ahmad Bradshaw.

Bears | Work out Phillip Tanner    Mon Apr 7, 11:21 PM

The Chicago Bears worked out free-agent RB Phillip Tanner (Cowboys) Monday, April 7.

Cowboys | May try to re-sign Phillip Tanner    Mon Feb 24, 02:21 PM

The Dallas Cowboys may try to re-sign restricted free-agent RB Phillip Tanner to a one-year deal worth the four-year veteran minimum this offseason. The team does not plan to tender an offer to Tanner this offseason.

Footballguys view: Tanner is a decent backup running back. The Cowboys could keep him around for veteran depth behind Demarco Murray.

Cowboys | DeMarco Murray's role to expand    Tue Dec 3, 09:21 PM

The Dallas Cowboys plan to ride RB DeMarco Murray as much as they can after losing RB Lance Dunbar (knee). 'DeMarco Murray is our lead back, has been our lead back all year long, has done an excellent job for us, did a really good job in the game the other day again,' head coach Jason Garrett said Tuesday, Dec. 3. 'He'll be the lead dog. The other guys, (RBs Joseph Randle and Phillip Tanner) will have to step up if they have an opportunity if DeMarco can't go.'

Footballguys view: An important note for fantasy owners here. More Murray is a great thing if his body can handle the increased workload. He's a must-start most every week as a RB2 with upside.

Cowboys | Two RBs expected to get bigger roles    Sat Nov 30, 11:10 AM

Dallas Cowboys RBs Phillip Tanner and Joseph Randle are expected to receive bigger roles in the offense because of the injury to RB Lance Dunbar (knee).

Cowboys | DeMarco Murray to miss at least one week    Mon Oct 14, 02:12 PM

Dallas Cowboys RB DeMarco Murray (knee) will miss the team's Week 7 game but may be able to play Week 8.

Footballguys view: This leaves Joseph Randle and Lance Dunbar as the two most likely to receive carries in the backfield. Randle should be the starter while Murray is out. Randle is a speed back who can get to top speed in a hurry. He's not creative or elusive in the open field, but Randle only needs a small crease to make a big play.

Cowboys | DeMarco Murray has MCL sprain    Mon Oct 14, 12:35 PM

Dallas Cowboys RB DeMarco Murray (knee) is dealing with a left medial collateral ligament sprain in his knee, and he'll undergo an MRI exam Monday, Oct. 14. Murray was injured in the second quarter against the Washington Redskins and entered the day ranked fifth in the league with 399 rushing yards. It's unknown if Murray will be able to play in Week 7 against the Philadelphia Eagles.

Footballguys view: Rookie running back Joseph Randle took over as the Cowboys' lead back. He would be splitting time with Lance Dunbar if Murray misses a significant amount of time.

Cowboys | Phillip Tanner injures arm    Sun Aug 4, 11:56 PM

Dallas Cowboys RB Phillip Tanner (arm) suffered a left arm injury in the first quarter of the Hall of Fame preseason game Sunday, Aug. 4, against the Miami Dolphins, but he was able to return to the game later.

Footballguys view: Tanner made a statement about his worthiness for a roster spot in a crowded backup running back situation. He seemed bigger and stronger than he was last year and usually required a gang tackle to be stopped. The backup to Demarco Murray is likely to see the field at some point as a starter if Murray's past is any indication.

Cowboys | HC happy with Joseph Randle    Tue Jul 30, 09:16 PM

Dallas Cowboys RB Joseph Randle (thumb) showed well in the team's scrimmage, and is off to a good start in training camp, according to head coach Jason Garrett. Still, Randle is behind RB Lance Dunbar for the race for the backup job to RB DeMarco Murray, and RB Phillip Tanner has reportedly been more consistent as well.

Footballguys view: Randle was drafted to be the primary backup behind Demarco Murray. He's simply not playing up to his potential yet and has been passed by both Dunbar and Tanner. We weren't crazy about this draft pick in April. Randle has good straight line speed but questions abound about his lack of creativity and questionable instincts.

Cowboys | Phillip Tanner drops weight    Wed Jul 24, 01:35 PM

Dallas Cowboys RB Phillip Tanner said he lost around 10 pounds this offseason in hopes of being quicker this season. He said the extra weight hindered him from getting to the hole at times last season.

Footballguys view: Tanner wants to be more explosive and win a spot on the final roster. He's competing with Lance Dunbar to be the team's RB3 behind Demarco Murray and rookie Joseph Randle (Oklahoma State).

Cowboys | Kendial Lawrence could push for roster spot    Mon Jul 15, 02:51 PM

Dallas Cowboys RB Kendial Lawrence could push RB Phillip Tanner for a roster spot if he performs well during training camp and the preseason.

Footballguys view: Lawrence was added to the roster as an undrafted free agent out of Missouri in 2013. During four years with Mizzou Lawrence carried the ball 444 times for 2,232 yards with 21 TDs and 40 receptions. He's not a big back (listed at 195 pounds) but is incredibly fast (4.33 40-yard dash). He'll have to prove himself as a receiver and on special teams if he wants to make the final roster. Fantasy owners in super deep dynasty leagues need to take note.

Cowboys | RB Tanner making a good impression    Sun Jun 23, 06:46 PM

Dallas Cowboys RB Phillip Tanner has been making a good impression at OTAs. New RB coach Gary Brown said, "From what I've seen so far, he looks like he's in great shape. He's studying. He knows what he's doing and not making any mental errors."

Footballguys view: Tanner needs to improve if he wants to win the RB3 job behind Demarco Murray and rookie Joseph Randle (Oklahoma State). Lance Dunbar is the main competition for Tanner in training camp.

Cowboys | Believe Joseph Randle can be full-time RB if needed    Mon Jun 17, 02:16 PM

The Dallas Cowboys believe RB Joseph Randle can be a full-time running back if something happened to RB DeMarco Murray. Randle will have to compete with RBs Lance Dunbar and Phillip Tanner for the No. 2 running back job during training camp.

Footballguys view: We don't see Randle having any trouble winning the team's RB2 spot behind Murray. Randle has good straight line speed but isn't creative or elusive in the open field. He's not the biggest back so if he were to get an increased workload we might see him split time in some sort of RBBC. Randle is an important player for Murray owners to handcuff if you've got the roster space.

Cowboys | Phillip Tanner in danger    Mon May 6, 10:36 AM

The Dallas Cowboys don't seem to be high on RB Phillip Tanner, and he could be cut.

Footballguys view: Tanner's time in Dallas may be limited. He's a rugged runner but offers little elusiveness or big play ability. With the addition of Joseph Randle (Oklahoma State) in the 2013 NFL draft it could bounce Tanner from the roster.

Cowboys | Will look to add RB     Thu Feb 21, 08:06 PM

Dallas Cowboys executive vice president Stephen Jones said the team will look to add another running back this offseason that can be a backup to RB DeMarco Murray.

Cowboys | Not expected to draft a RB    Mon Feb 11, 07:08 AM

The Dallas Cowboys will likely not select a running back in the NFL Draft. Instead, the team will likely rely on RBs Lance Dunbar and Phillip Tanner to back up starting RB DeMarco Murray.

Footballguys view: This class of RB isn't top heavy but there is good depth in the middle and late rounds. The Cowboys could change their mind if someone they like drops in the draft.

Cowboys | Two expected to serve as backups at RB    Sun Feb 10, 01:07 PM

Dallas Cowboys RBs Lance Dunbar and Phillip Tanner are expected to backups to RB DeMarco Murray next season.

Footballguys view: We like Dunbar and Tanner in dynasty leagues. Dunbar shows good change of direction ability, balance, and foot frequency as a runner. Tanner is a swift runner who isn't afraid of contact. With Murray's injury history we could see one or both get more touches than some think in 2013.

Cowboys | Felix Jones unlikely to be re-signed    Tue Jan 8, 10:23 PM

Dallas Cowboys RB Felix Jones is in the final year of his deal, and he is unlikely to be re-signed, especially since young RBs Lance Dunbar and Phillip Tanner showed promise behind RB DeMarco Murray.

Cowboys | Lance Dunbar passes Philip Tanner?    Tue Nov 6, 09:48 PM

Dallas Cowboys RB Lance Dunbar picked up more carries in the Week 9 game against the Atlanta Falcons than RB Phillip Tanner. Head coach Jason Garrett explained that Tanner's special teams duties pushed the team to give Dunbar more touches.

Footballguys view: Fantasy owners can go ahead and feel safe dumping Tanner in re-draft leagues. We like Dunbar because of his low center of gravity and quick initial burst.

Cowboys | Struggled on third down in Week 9     Mon Nov 5, 10:49 AM

The Dallas Cowboys converted just three of 10 third-down opportunities in Week 9. Drops were a key factor to the struggles; WR Kevin Ogletree dropped a third-down pass in the second quarter.   Cowboys | No running game without DeMarco Murray    Fri Nov 2, 08:38 PM

The Dallas Cowboys haven't had a running game since losing RB DeMarco Murray (foot) to a sprained left foot in mid-October. Since he has been out, the team has rushed 48 times but averaged just 2.2 yards per carry on the ground. RB Felix Jones (shoulder, knee) isn't 100 percent, but he is probable on the team's official injury report for Week 9.

Footballguys view: Jones is a key piece for the Cowboys because backups Phillp Tanner and Lance Dunbar aren't as good in pass protection.

Cowboys | Felix Jones' health a concern     Thu Nov 1, 12:45 PM

Dallas Cowboys RB Felix Jones' (knee, neck) health now is an area of concern as the team prepares for its Week 9 game. In addition to a bruised knee suffered in a game Oct. 21, Jones also suffered a nerve irritation in his neck in the first series of that game. Jones carried the ball 13 times for just 19 yards in Week 8. He was on the practice field Thursday, Nov. 1, with his knee taped up. 'We'll see what his health is going into this game,' head coach Jason Garrett said. 'Certainly those other guys have to be ready to play.'

Footballguys view: Jones' health has always been a concern. Anytime he's been given a bigger role he seems to get banged up. The only healthy RBs on the roster right now in Dallas are Phillip Tanner and Lance Dunbar.

Cowboys | Felix Jones to start in Week 8    Sat Oct 27, 10:55 AM

Dallas Cowboys RB Felix Jones (knee) will start in Week 8 in place of RB DeMarco Murray (foot).

Dallas Cowboys RB Phillip Tanner played 35 of the team's 68 offensive snaps in Week 7 against the Carolina Panthers, two more snaps than RB Felix Jones (knee).

Footballguys view: Jones has durability issues so we weren't surprised to see him banged up again when asked to carry a bigger load. Demarco Murray may not be back in week 8, so that means we could see more from Tanner in the Cowboys backfield.

Dallas Cowboys RB DeMarco Murray (foot) was seen carrying crutches without a limp Monday, Oct. 22, but he's still unlikely to return in Week 8 against the New York Giants. RB Felix Jones (knee, neck) is expected to start despite being nicked up in Week 7. Jones will likely split the load with RP Phillip Tanner.

Footballguys view: Jones didn't even get through one game without sustaining more injuries. We could see Tanner get an expanded role if Jones can't stay healthy.

Cowboys | Relied on Phillip Tanner late in Week 7     Mon Oct 22, 11:12 AM

Dallas Cowboys RB Phillip Tanner served as the offense's closer in Week 7 at running back. With RB Felix Jones (knee) injured, the Cowboys handed the ball to Tanner on five of their final six snaps of the game. Tanner finished with a career-high 13 carries and 30 yards, and he also caught one pass for eight yards.

Cowboys | Felix Jones, Phillip Tanner split carries    Sun Oct 21, 08:10 PM

Dallas Cowboys RBs Felix Jones and Phillip Tanner split the carries in Week 7 against the Carolina Panthers. Jones carried 15 times for a team-high 44 yards, while Tanner ran for 30 yards on 13 totes. Jones was also good for five receptions and 30 yards, while Tanner added an eight-yard reception.

Footballguys view: Jones was in and out of the game and not getting a feature back load despite being the primary back last week after Demarco Murray went out. The running game never got on track in a good matchup. We may not know who is starting next week vs. the Giants until late in the week, but Jones value is down and Tanner's slightly up on this performance. Murray's value also takes a hit with the loss of Phil Costa on the offensive line.

Cowboys | Should still be able to run in Week 7    Mon Oct 15, 09:07 PM

Despite the loss of Dallas Cowboys RB DeMarco Murray (foot) for the Week 7 game against the Carolina Panthers, the combination of RBs Felix Jones, Phillip Tanner and Lance Dunbar should be able to run against a rush defense allowing 127 yards per game.

Footballguys view: Jones will get first crack here. He's a big play weapon but fantasy owners also need to remember his long injury history when given a bigger workload. Adding Tanner may be the shark move as he's the bigger back with a more intent running style.

Cowboys | DeMarco Murray unlikely to play in Week 7    Mon Oct 15, 04:41 PM

Murray will likely be on a week-to-week status, according to sources. An MRI exam showed no broken bones, though. Murray was not in a walking boot after the game.

Footballguys view: This could be a multi-week injury for Murray. Felix Jones should be the lead back for the Cowboys while Murray is out. We'll also see more from backup RBs Phillip Tanner and Lance Dunbar during that time.

WRs Kevin Ogletree and Dwayne Harris, RB Phillip Tanner and CB Morris Claiborne could be other options to return kicks.

Footballguys view: A smaller role for Jones is in the cards if he doesn't work hard to get out of the doghouse. Dynasty owners should try and buy low on Jones with the hopes that he'll get a shot with his second team in the future.
