Giants | Unlikely to bring in Limas Sweed Sun May 13, 02:04 PM
The New York Giants likely will not sign free-agent WR Limas Sweed (Steelers) because he did not perform well during the team's minicamp. Sweed was participating in the minicamp on a tryout basis.
Footballguys view: Sweed was a bust with the Steelers and it looks like his NFL career is likely over. |

Bengals | Limas Sweed works out Sun Apr 15, 01:53 AM
The Cincinnati Bengals worked out free-agent WR Limas Sweed (Steelers) Friday, April 13. Sweed missed the 2010 season due to an Achilles' injury, and he was waived by the Pittsburgh Steelers last season due to shoulder problems.
Footballguys view: Sweed has never lived up to his potential and we don't think there's any reason to believe he'll start doing that now. |

Steelers | Limas Sweed waived/injured Thu Sep 15, 10:35 AM
The Pittsburgh Steelers waived WR Limas Sweed (shoulder) from Injured Reserve this week. The team placed him on the waived/injured list Aug. 17, but once he cleared waivers they were required to keep him on Injured Reserve until his shoulder healed. Sweed received no injury settlement.
Footballguys view: Sweed was overdrafted in the second-round of the 2008 NFL Draft and never played up to his potential in Pittsburgh. We think it will be difficult for Sweed to catch on with another team because of his healthy problems and bad hands. |

Steelers | Limas Sweed injured Saturday Sun Aug 7, 11:55 AM

Steelers | Limas Sweed will need good preseason to make team Mon Jun 6, 12:20 PM
Pittsburgh Steelers WR Limas Sweed likely will have to perform well during the preseason and show that he is recovered from the Achilles' tendon injury he suffered last offseason if he wants to make the final roster. Sweed appears to be the No. 6 wide receiver on the depth chart at this point.
Footballguys view: Sweed has never lived up to his draft status, and this is certainly a make or break camp for him. Injuries and personal/emotional issues have held him back to this point. Coming back from an Achilles' injury has proven difficult for any player sustaining the injury and we don't feel Sweed will make enough of an impact to make the final roster. |

Steelers | Limas Sweed likely to be with team for camp Wed Jun 1, 11:27 AM
The Pittsburgh Steelers likely will keep WR Limas Sweed on the roster during training camp to see if he has the ability to make the team.
Footballguys view: Sweed has been a disappointment since coming out of college but he could still make the team in a reserve role. Two years ago he missed time because of personal reasons, and last season he missed the entire year because of an Achilles' injury. He must overcome the injury, his emotional issues, and bad hands if he wants to stick around in Pittsburgh. |

Steelers | Limas Sweed still in the plans Wed Feb 23, 10:58 AM
Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin said WR Limas Sweed (Achilles') is still a part of the team's plans but will have to compete for a roster spot, reports Scott Brown, of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review.
Footballguys view: We can't imagine Sweed making an impact with the Steelers, or even sticking around as a special teams player. |

Steelers | Limas Sweed believes to be in plans next season Wed Feb 2, 11:55 AM
Pittsburgh Steelers WR Limas Sweed (Achilles') said he believes he is in the team's plans for next season, reports Mark Kaboly, of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review. Sweed has missed the 2010 season because of an Achilles' injury.
Footballguys view: We don't believe Sweed is in the team's plans for the future. With guys like Mike Wallace, Emmanuel Sanders, and Antonio Brown the Steelers already have a good group of young receivers. Sweed doesn't add any value as a special teams player either and is could be released by the team. |

Steelers | Limas Sweed placed on IR Tue May 11, 04:53 PM
Aaron Wilson, of NationalFootballPost.com, reports the Pittsburgh Steelers have placed WR Limas Sweed (Achilles') on Injured Reserve after he cleared waivers.
Footballguys view: Even with Santonio Holmes being traded to the New York Jets, Limas Sweed was on the roster bubble in 2010. He's never lived up to his potential with the Steelers and was known to drop too many easy passes. Sweed failed to earn the trust of QB Ben Roethlisberger or his coaches. Now he will miss the entire season because of this Achilles' injury. |

Ed Bouchette, of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, reportsPittsburgh Steelers WR Limas Sweed (Achilles') underwent surgery on his Achilles' tendon injury Monday, May 3. The team confirmed the surgery but would not say what the specific injury Sweed suffered.
Footballguys view: It looks like Sweed is out a minimum of three months, and perhaps as long as six months. The Steelers have prepared for life without Sweed, and we expect rookie wide receiver Emmanuel Sanders to win the fourth-string job that Sweed used to have. |

Steelers | Limas Sweed suffers potentially serious injury Sun May 2, 01:32 PM
Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin said WR Limas Sweed (Achilles') left practice Sunday, May 2, with a potentially major Achilles' tendon injury, according to SIRIUS NFL Radio.
Footballguys view: Sweed was already on the roster bubble entering the 2010 season. Now he may be done for the year. We'll have more updates as soon as they are announced. |
Steelers | Sweed returns to practice Mon Apr 19, 10:59 AM
Ed Bouchette, of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, reports Pittsburgh Steelers WR Limas Sweed returned to the practice field Monday, April 19, after spending time on Injured Reserve last season for issues not related to an injury. 'I am excited to be back on the field and back in the locker room with my teammates,' Sweed said in a statement issued through the team. 'I appreciate all the support I received from the Steelers organization while I dealt with some personal issues at the end of the 2009 season. I have been working diligently and I am focused on the remainder of the offseason in getting myself prepared to have a great 2010 season.'
Footballguys view: Sweed has a chance for an increased role this year now that Santonio Holmes has been traded to the New York Jets. He has a lot to prove, and may be on the roster bubble when training camp rolls around. |

Steelers | Sweed remains in plans Mon Mar 22, 10:28 AM
Ed Bouchette, of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, reports Pittsburgh Steelers director of football operations Kevin Colbert said WR Limas Sweed has been participating in offseason workouts with his teammates. 'He's still in the mix,' Colbert said.
Footballguys view: Sweed is most certainly on the roster bubble, and we wouldn't be surprised if he's released when cuts come down in the preseason. The Steelers loved what they saw in Mike Wallace during his rookie season in 2009, and are expecting more from him this year. Sweed would be the fourth-string receiver at this time, and could lose that spot on the depth chart if Pittsburgh drafts another wideout in the 2010 NFL Draft. |

Steelers | Sweed could be released Tue Mar 9, 12:15 PM
ESPN.com reports the Pittsburgh Steelers could release WR Limas Sweed after the team signed WRs Arnaz Battle and Antwaan Randle El.
Footballguys view: Sweed has never lived up to the hype after being a second-round pick in the 2008 NFL Draft. He has good size, but is not the most sudden receiver and has inconsistent hands. Sweed also has some off field concerns that led to him being placed on the Reserve/Non-Football Injury/Illness List in December of 2009. |

The team has not released any details on Sweed's illness, and they have declined to elaborate on the reasons behind Sweed's status remaining under wraps.

Scott Brown, of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review, reports Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin said it is possible that WR Limas Sweed could be inactive for the team's Week 4 game.
Footballguys view: Sweed was having a great preseason, but so far in the regular season he has failed to impress. He dropped a touchdown pass in the Steelers loss to the Bengals on Sunday, and may be replaced on gameday by veteran Shaun McDonald. The Steelers have been very impressed with rookie Mike Wallace, and he should continue to play as the third receiver. |

Footballguys view: The Steelers played last week without Timmons, but were looking forward to getting him back in the lineup this week. Steelers | Will continue to play both Wallace and Sweed as the 3rd WR Wed Sep 16, 11:05 AM
Scott Brown, from the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review, reports Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin commented on how the team would use Limas Sweed and Mike Wallace. "We will continue to (play) both guys until we get clarity as to who has positioned themselves as a potential third wideout, if you will. Right now, we like the work of both of those men, and we'll continue what we're doing in regards to that."
Footballguys view: By their own admission, the Steelers basically forgot about Limas Sweed in their week 1 matchup against the Titans. Rookie Mike Wallace is one of the fastest players on the team, and can use his speed to stretch a defense. Sweed was playing much better this preseason, and is the huge target that Big Ben wanted a couple of years ago. Wallace could be their big play 3rd wide receiver, while Sweed could be the red zone threat because of his size and leaping ability. |

Steelers | Forgot about Sweed Sat Sep 12, 02:31 PM
Gerry Dulac, from the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, cautions not to jump to conclusions that Mike Wallace has moved ahead of Limas Sweed as the team's No. 3 receiver, even though it certainly appeared that way against the Titans. Wallace took nearly all of the snaps as the third receiver, but it wasn't by design. Offensive coordinator Bruce Arians said he even told Sweed after the game that he didn't mean to keep him on the bench as much as he did.
Footballguys view: Arians should file this under "my bad." We like the way Limas Sweed was performing all through August. He was playing tougher, going over the middle, and did not fake any injuries this preseason. Earlier reports have stated that both Wallace and Sweed will see time as the Steelers third-string receiver, so this situation could go back and forth all year. |

Steelers | Sweed and Wallace to split 3rd WR spot Tue Sep 8, 03:07 PM
Scott Brown, from the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review, reports the battle for the No. 3 wide receiver spot behind starters Hines Ward and Santonio Holmes had not been resolved -- and probably won't be. Offensive coordinator Bruce Arians said both Limas Sweed and rookie Mike Wallace will serve as the No. 3 wideout at times. "There are different packages for both those guys so there's not really a third guy; it depends on the package that they're in right now," Arians said. "It gives us some flexibility that way."
Footballguys view: Sweed has looked much improved from the player that we saw during his rookie season. He's playing tougher, going over the middle fearlessly, and has stopped alligator arming passes. Mike Wallace may be the fastest player on the Steelers roster. He has good body control and reliable hands, but he's still learning the intricacies of the position. |

Steelers | Fight for No. 3 WR position could continue into season Thu Sep 3, 01:30 AM
Scott Brown, of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review, reports Pittsburgh Steelers WR Limas Sweed and WR Mike Wallace continue to compete for the No.3 position at wide receiver. Offensive coordinator Bruce Arians hinted the competition could continue during the regular season. Arians said both will play no matter who the No. 3 and No. 4 wide receiver is. "It might be 3A and 3B depending on our package, what we're asking out of those guys. I'm not saying either one's beat the other one out. They'll both play a lot," added Arians.
Footballguys view: The players bring entirely different skillsets to the table. Sweed is a big rangy athlete who can catch the ball no matter where it is thrown, and Wallace is a burner with speed to spare who can stretch the defense. The Steelers have the potential for a potent passing attack if the running game can't get on track again this season. |

Steelers | Mendenhall and Sweed proving their worth Mon Aug 31, 11:32 AM
Scott Brown, from the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review, reports Rashard Mendenhall and wide receiver Limas Sweed, the headliners in the Steelers' 2008 draft class, are stating their cases that each deserves a prominent role in the Steelers' offense this season. Mendenhall rushed for a game-high 48 yards and a touchdown Saturday night and helped the Steelers dominate time of possession against the Bills. Sweed, starting for the injured Santonio Holmes, caught four passes for 34 yards and made two twisting grabs in traffic on balls that were thrown a little bit behind him. "We put a lot of pressure on those second-year guys," Steelers coach Mike Tomlin said. "They've got to make plays. Limas is doing that. Some others have got to join him."
Footballguys view: Willie Parker is still the starter in Pittsburgh, but is being largely forgotten in fantasy leagues. Owners who select Parker, need to handcuff Mendenhall later in the draft. Mendenhall could see a bigger role in the offense during the fantasy playoffs if he can stay healthy. We like what we're seeing from Limas Sweed this year. He's going all out to catch passes, and no longer has the alligator arms that he showed last year. Sweed has limited fantasy value because the Steelers rely so heavily on their ground game. |

Ed Bouchette, of The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, reports if for no other reason than process of elimination, he believes WR Limas Sweed will be the Pittsburgh Steelers No. 3 receiver this year. Bouchette said he does not believe WR Shawn McDonald is physical enough and WR Mike Wallace may not have the experience despite having speed. Steelers | Sweed standing out in the crowd Tue Aug 4, 08:17 PM
Gerry Dulac, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, notes that three days into training camp and not much has stood out more at Saint Vincent College than Limas Sweed, not even James Harrison's Smart car. He runs routes with authority, catches passes seemingly with ease and even has learned to find a seam or two in a zone defense. In other words, all the things he did not do last season as the team's No. 2 draft choice. "I said to him the other day, 'Who's that big, pretty guy out there running,' " offensive coordinator Bruce Arians said. "He said, 'Man, this is so much different than last year.' "
Footballguys view: With Nate Washington gone to the Titans, it's time for Limas Sweed to prove that he was worth a second-round pick. Last season was a big learning process for the rookie as his hands were inconsistent, and he was plagued by dropped passes in key moments. Sweed is the big receiver that Big Ben wanted, so at the very least he develop into a nice target in the red zone. |

Former Browns and Ravens scout Daniel Jeremiah reports on his Twitter feed that a league source has heard that the Steelers are worried about Limas Sweed's demeanor and fit in their system.
Footballguys view: This training camp is huge for Sweed. Shaun McDonald will give him a great battle for the #3 WR spot, and if he loses that, third-round Mike Wallace could start to push him for the #4 job. |

Steelers | Sweed does not have edge for No. 3 job Fri Jun 12, 01:26 PM
Ed Bouchette, of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, reports Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin said WR Limas Sweed does not have any edge over the other wide receivers for the No. 3 wide receiver job.
Footballguys view: Sweed still has a long way to go judging by how he looked last season, and veteran Shaun McDonald is a natural slot receiver, so Sweed will have to earn that #3 spot. That also assumes that third round draft pick Mike Wallace won't have a great camp and push Sweed. Sweed probably needs the competition, so this is good for his long term future, even if it limits his short term potential. |

ESPN's James Walker reports Pittsburgh Steelers WR Limas Sweed, a second-year player, has made great strides entering this summer. He is making a lot of plays and turning heads during workouts.
Footballguys view: The Steelers have picked up several receivers just in case Limas does not make the type of impact they expected when they selected him in the 2nd round of the 2008 NFL Draft. Rookie Mike Wallace and veteran Shaun McDonald could be poised to take his spot on the depth chart if he falters in training camp. |
