Bills | Frank Summers, Evan Rodriguez up for FB job    Sun Jun 22, 08:28 PM

Buffalo Bills FB Frank Summers and FB Evan Rodriguez split reps at the position during offseason workouts and likely will continue to split time during training camp.

Footballguys view: We'd love to see Frank "The Tank" win the fullback job in Buffalo. Rodriguez is more like a TE/H-back while Summers is your classic battering ram fullback and receiver out of the backfield.

49ers | Frank Summers to visit    Sat Mar 17, 09:55 PM

Free-agent FB Frank Summers (Chargers) is scheduled to work out for the San Francisco 49ers next week. Summers is hopeful of staying with the San Diego Chargers, but the team added FB Le'Ron McClain, making him expendable.

Footballguys view: The Chargers were looking to add Frank the Tank as their starting Fullback, but the addition of McClain clouds his future in San Diego. The 49ers are looking for a replacement to Moran Norris.

Chargers | Plan to use Frank Summers as starting FB    Tue Mar 13, 09:15 PM

The San Diego Chargers plan to use FB Frank Summers as their starting fullback in 2012.

Footballguys view: We'll see if 'Frank The Tank' can replace Mike Tolbert as the team's primary blocking back. Ryan Mathews could see an expanded role with Tolbert likely moving on in free agency.

Chargers | Plan to carry more RBs    Mon Oct 10, 06:20 PM

The San Diego Chargers will 'probably' carry four active running backs for their remaining games, according to head coach Norv Turner. RBs Ryan Mathews (calf) and Mike Tolbert (concussion) are expected back for the team's next game in Week 7. RB Jacob Hester is expected to be the third back, and the team will sign FB Frank Summers or RB Curtis Brinkley from the practice squad. RB Jordan Todman won't necessarily be the fourth running back; the team likes him but sees him as a contributor in the future.

Footballguys view: Todman's inability to get on the active roster when the team is carrying four backs shows you exactly where he is in his development.

The San Diego Chargers signed free-agent FB Frank Summers (Steelers) Tuesday, Feb. 15, reports Adam Caplan, of FOXSports.com. The Steelers had an exclusive seven-day negotiating window to re-sign Summers, but that ended Monday, Feb. 14.

Footballguys view: Frank 'The Tank' is a powerful runner who can pick up yards after contact with his strong leg drive and determination. With Mike Tolbert eligible for free agency the Chargers want to give themselves options if they lose him to another team.

Steelers | Frank Summers working at FB    Mon Aug 2, 02:32 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers RB Frank Summers is seeing a lot of time at fullback during practices, according to ESPN.com's James Walker. Offensive coordinator Bruce Arians appears to be willing to see if Summers can fill the role.

Footballguys view: Summers is a big back who is hard nosed enough to play fullback. He's not terribly impressive as a runner (ask Jerome Bettis) but could get a few goalline carries because of his size and running style.

Steelers | Summers placed on IR    Tue Sep 29, 04:40 PM

The Pittsburgh Steelers have announced they have placed FB Frank Summers (back) on Injured Reserve, ending his 2009 season.

Footballguys view: Frank "The Tank" Summers disappointing rookie season continues. Even former Steeler great Jerome Bettis piled on the rookie when he commented how Summers was his least favorite Steelers running back. We'll see if he can come back next season, and make an impact on the team.

Steelers | Bettis critical of former team    Fri Sep 18, 10:29 AM

Ron Cook, of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, reports retired RB Jerome Bettis was critical of his former team, the Pittsburgh Steelers, in particular the running backs. 'Willie Parker: I haven't seen much from him,' Bettis wrote in a column for SI.com. 'Rashard Mendenhall: I haven't really seen him, period ...The running back I like least on that team is Frank Summers, the rookie fullback. He doesn't seem to understand what's going on. He's missing plenty of blocks.' Bettis was also critical of the offensive line. 'They have no continuity. On top of not being able to protect Ben Roethlisberger, they're letting running backs get hit before they reach the line of scrimmage ... The problem isn't anything new, and I blame the coaching staff for not addressing the line in the offseason ... Pittsburgh can't repeat with the line playing like this.'

Footballguys view: Bettis was asked about the comments later, and said that he didn't say anything that everybody doesn't already know.

Steelers | Three sit out Saturday    Sun Aug 30, 02:35 PM

Scott Brown, of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review, reports Pittsburgh Steelers RB Frank Summers (hamstring), DE Nick Eason (calf) and DT Steve McLendon (elbow) sat out the team's preseason game Saturday, Aug. 29.

Footballguys view: Frank Summers' hamstring injury may keep him from making the final roster. He is battling Isaac Redman for a spot on the team, and head coach Mike Tomlin has already stated whoever wins the job must have special teams value. Summers could be a solid contributor on special teams, but he's not getting the chance to impress coaches because of this injury. He may have to slide through on the practice squad if he wants to make the team.

Steelers | Goal-line back has to conribute elsewhere    Fri Aug 28, 05:48 PM

Ray Fittipaldo, of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, reports that if UDFA RB Isaac Redman is going to make the team and become the Steelers goal-line RB, he has to contribute somewhere else, probably special teams. Head coach Mike Tomlin said, "Gary Russell was able to get an opportunity to be [the goal-line back] in the past because he was a reliable special teams player. ... I would imagine that if our goal-line runner is anyone other than Willie Parker or Rashard Mendenhall it will be because they're capable of doing other things. That's where we are with it."

Footballguys view: Tomlin's words should send shivers down the spine of both Redman, and injured fifth-round pick FB Frank Summers. Willie Parker scored the only TD for the Steelers vs. the Redskins from three yards out, and the chances of him having the goal-line work going into the season aren't as remote as they were a few weeks ago, assuming he can stay healthy, which he hasn't done during training camp.

Gerry Dulac, of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, reports Pittsburgh Steelers RB Frank Summers (hamstring) left the team's practice Wednesday, Aug. 19, with a hamstring injury. Head coach Mike Tomlin said he did not know the extent of the injury.

Footballguys view: This injury could be the difference between Summers making the final roster and Summers going to the practice squad.

Gerry Dulac, of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, reports as many as six offensive rookies could make the team's final roster. TE David Johnson, WR Mike Wallace, OG Kraig Urbik, OL Ramon Foster, RB Isaac Redman and RB Frank Summers are candidates to make the team. Redman and Foster both went undrafted.

Steelers | Who's looking good, who's looking bad    Sun Aug 9, 09:38 PM

James Walker, from ESPN.com, reports four players that stood out most during his training camp visit: James Harrison, Lawrence Timmons, Mike Wallace and Daniel Sepulveda. Four players that struggled during his visit: Frank Summers, Dennis Dixon, Kraig Urbik and David Johnson.

Footballguys view: Mike Wallace may be the fastest player on the team, and could play a bigger role if Limas Sweed doesn't improve in his second year. Frank Summers nickname is "Frank The Tank" but struggled in goalline work against the first team defense. He can be a standout special teams player so his roster spot should be safe.

Steelers | Summers believes he is perfect for team    Wed Apr 29, 07:29 PM

Ed Bouchette, of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, reports Pittsburgh Steelers RB Frank Summers believes he is a perfect fit for the team's physical style. 'I don't think I could fit any better than on any other team in the league. With Pittsburgh's physical play and my physical style, we go hand in hand,' Summer said.

Footballguys view: Frank "The Tank" Summers could be the next Chris Fuamatu-Ma'Afala. He is a powerful FB that has surprising speed and moves for such a big man. The Steelers will use this versatile back in many different ways - blocking, receiving, running - he can do it all. With the release of Gary Russell he could instantly be Pittsburgh's goalline back.
