Panthers | Jonathan Stewart retires with Panthers    Tue Apr 23, 11:01 AM

Free-agent RB Jonathan Stewart (Giants) signed a one-day contract Tuesday, April 23, to retire with the Carolina Panthers.

Footballguys view: Stewart was the #13 pick for the Panthers in 2008 even though the team already had De'Angelo Williams. A myriad of leg and foot injuries kept him from fulfilling his potential, but he still finished with over 7000 rushing yards and gave us some great stretches of play over the years.

Giants | Jonathan Stewart likely done with NY Giants    Fri Jan 25, 12:20 PM

New York Giants RB Jonathan Stewart's two-year contract must be exercised by the third day of the waiver period, which begins Feb. 4. He is scheduled to receive a $2.35 million salary in 2019, but the Giants wouldn't take on any dead money and could recoup a cap credit of $250,000 from 2018 if they don't exercise his option, making it 'a complete no-brainer' he will be released, according to Dan Duggan of The Athletic.

Footballguys view: It would be news if the Giants were expected to keep Stewart around. They've got Saquon Barkley to lead the way and don't need the veteran back at an inflated price. Stewart might have a few teams interested if/when he's on the open market.

Giants | Jonathan Stewart designated for return    Thu Nov 15, 01:14 PM

New York Giants RB Jonathan Stewart (foot) could return from the Reserve/Injured list in the near future as he was designated to return to practice Thursday, Nov. 15.

Footballguys view: This is an odd use of an IR-return spot as Stewart doesn't have much to offer the team and he probably isn't a player they want to evaluate for the future.

Giants | Jonathan Stewart may return    Mon Oct 1, 07:27 PM

New York Giants RB Jonathan Stewart (foot) may be activated from the Reserve/Injured list later this season, according to head coach Pat Shurmur. Stewart is expected to be sidelined eight weeks because of his foot injury.

Footballguys view: The Giants are all about Saquon Barkley in the backfield. Stewart would give them veteran depth...but not much else...upon his return.

Giants | Thursday practice report for Giants    Thu Sep 27, 03:12 PM

New York Giants TE Evan Engram (knee), DT Damon Harrison (knee), WR Cody Latimer (knee) and RB Jonathan Stewart (foot) did not participate in practice Thursday, Sept. 27. CB Eli Apple (groin), LB Connor Barwin (knee), CB Antonio Hamilton (groin), WR Stacy Coley (hamstring) and LB Olivier Vernon (ankle) were limited during practice.

Footballguys view: If Latimer can't play Sunday, the Giants will have to play Russell Shepard at wide receiver. They'll already be without Evan Engram, so Rhett Ellison could get a lot of targets as the starting tight end and a top four target in what should be a high-scoring game.

Giants | Wayne Gallman making a move for No. 2 RB?    Wed Aug 22, 09:47 PM

New York Giants RB Wayne Gallman 'seemed to win over the (team)' in the team's preseason win over the Detroit Lions on Friday, Aug. 17. According to SNY's Ralph Vacchiano, Gallman's reemergence has 'clouded' whether he or Jonathan Stewart will serve as the primary backup behind Saquon Barkley to begin the season.

Giants | Jonathan Stewart hard to tackle    Mon Jul 16, 10:19 PM

New York Giants RB Jonathan Stewart has forced 124 missed tackles over the last three seasons according to Pro Football Focus, the most of any running back over that span.

Footballguys view: Stewart was the man...sometimes...during his time with the Carolina Panthers. This year with his new team, Stewart has been tackled by the bench. We don't see him getting a ton of work as the Giants spent a premium pick on RB Saquon Barkley in the 2018 NFL draft. Barkley is a three-down back and only needs to come off the field for a breather. That doesn't leave a lot of work for the veteran back Stewart in 2018.

Giants | Wayne Gallman making play for No. 2 spot    Tue Jul 10, 12:13 PM

New York Giants RB Wayne Gallman has the 'inside track for the job as a change-of-pace complement' over Jonathan Stewart and Robert Martin, according to Matt Lombardo of NJ.com.

Footballguys view: Stewart has looked slow and former Rutgers back Martin is an undrafted free agent who had an impressive rookie mini-camp, and so is pretty unproven. Gallman has some talent but Saquon Barkley is the bellcow here and unless he gets hurt or implodes, consider Gallman a late-draft handcuff.

Giants | Jonathan Stewart not impressive in spring    Tue Jul 10, 12:07 PM

New York Giants RB Jonathan Stewart 'looked more like a plodding veteran running back trying to hang on than a back capable of shouldering a significant workload' this spring, according to Matt Lombardo of NJ.com.

Footballguys view: Given the presence of Saquon Barkley, a reduced role was already in the offing. And Stewart was already seeing a production decline, and his yards per carry continues to drop as well. This was always a move just in case the Giants didn't get their guy, who we now know was going to be Barkley all along. It would not even truly be a shock if he wasn't on the final roster, though aside from Wayne Gallman, there isn't a ton of competition. Stewart is tracking as the 67th back off the board and even there, he might be a little risky.

Giants | Jonathan Stewart expected to join NYG    Tue Mar 13, 05:49 PM

Free-agent RB Jonathan Stewart (Panthers) is expected to sign with the New York Giants, according to a source.

Footballguys view: Stewart is not the player he used to be, but he's scored 15 rushing touchdowns over the last two years. The Giants could use him as a banger in the red zone but as a committee back in 2018.

Giants | Jonathan Stewart will meet with Giants    Mon Mar 12, 04:04 PM

Free-agent RB Jonathan Stewart (Panthers) is expected to visit the New York Giants Tuesday, March 13, according to a source. Stewart's old offensive coordinator in Carolina, Mike Shula, is the Giants' offensive coordinator.

Footballguys view: The Giants could use an upgrade at the running back position. They could add Stewart in free agency if the price is right. If they don't fix their RB issues in free agency, the Giants could select Saquan Barkley with the no2 overall pick in the 2018 NFL draft.

Lions | Jonathan Stewart to meet with Detroit    Mon Mar 12, 12:15 PM

Free-agent RB Jonathan Stewart (Panthers) is scheduled to meet with the Detroit Lions Monday, March 12, according to a source.

Footballguys view: The Lions need to improve their rushing attack, and Stewart could do just that. He's not the same player he used to be, but Stewart might still be considered an upgrade for the Lions. If added, Stewart would work in a committee with guys like Theo Riddick and Ameer Abdullah.

Seahawks | Jonathan Stewart visiting Seahawks    Thu Mar 8, 11:32 AM

Free-agent RB Jonathan Stewart (Panthers) is visiting the Seattle Seahawks Thursday, March 8.

Panthers | Jonathan Stewart released    Wed Feb 28, 11:31 AM

Carolina Panthers RB Jonathan Stewart was released Wednesday, Feb. 28.

Footballguys view: The Panthers have Christian McCaffrey as their top back, but they are likely to add help at the position. They need a grinder to go with the big-play ability that McCaffrey brings to the table as a runner and receiver out of the backfield. Now on the open market, Stewart should get some interest from teams in need of veteran depth.

Panthers | Jonathan Stewart should be in uniform    Fri Jan 5, 05:14 PM

Carolina Panthers RB Jonathan Stewart (back) fully participated in practice Friday, Jan. 5, and is not on the injury report for the Wild Card playoff game.

Footballguys view: Stewart was scratched from action in Week 17 when his back tightened up in the 11th hour. That extra week gave him more rest, and Stewart was eased into practice for Wild Card Weekend. Against the Saints on Sunday, Stewart should lead the way on the ground for the Panthers with rookie RB Christian McCaffrey working as the change-of-pace and primary receiving back.

Panthers | Jonathan Stewart practicing    Thu Jan 4, 11:38 AM

Carolina Panthers RB Jonathan Stewart (back) is practicing Thursday, Jan. 4.

Footballguys view: There aren't a ton of options this week with just four games going, so Stewart has value regardless of ranking. That said, Christian McCaffrey has better upside and gets receptions as well, so if you are picking up a Carolina back, the rookie is a better bet.

Panthers | Jonathan Stewart expected to 'be fine'    Mon Jan 1, 01:03 PM

Carolina Panthers RB Jonathan Stewart (back) sat out Week 17 against the Atlanta Falcons, but head coach Ron Rivera told reporters Stewart is expected to 'be fine' for the team's wild-card weekend matchup against the New Orleans Saints.

Footballguys view: The Panthers have used a RBBC this year with both Stewart and rookie Christian McCaffrey. Stewart averaged a career low 3.4 yards per carry in 2017 (he's been hampered by injuries) but was able to rush for over 100 yards in two games. His last big game was in Week 14 against the Vikings (103 yards and three touchdowns), but that was before this back injury flared up. He'll be ready for the game against the Saints, but we're not expecting much.

Carolina Panthers RB Jonathan Stewart (non-injury) fully participated in practice Thursday, Dec. 28.

Footballguys view: Stewart will split his carries with Christian McCaffery, but doesn't have the rookie's upside with receiving yards. Add in Cam Newton's occasional goal line vultures and that makes Stewart a guy to pass on this week, as he is no more than a RB5.

Panthers | Jonathan Stewart back at practice    Thu Dec 14, 04:09 PM

Carolina Panthers RB Jonathan Stewart (non-injury) fully participated in practice Thursday, Dec. 14.
