Lions | Detroit makes roster moves    Thu Aug 10, 02:06 PM

Free-agent QB Teddy Bridgewater (Dolphins) and RB Benny Snell (Steelers) signed with the Detroit Lions on Thursday, Aug. 10. Also, OL Logan Stenberg was waived.

Footballguys view: Bridgewater is there to give the team better depth at the backup quarterback position. Jared Goff is their starter, and he could post great numbers this year with that array of weapons around him. If Goff gets banged up, the team can keep rolling with a seasoned veteran like Bridgewater.

Colts | Three RBs worked out    Thu Aug 3, 12:57 PM

Free-agent RB Kenyan Drake (Ravens), RB Benny Snell (Steelers) and RB Devine Ozigbo (Broncos) recently worked out for the Indianapolis Colts.

Footballguys view: The Colts are updating their files just in case they end up needing a running back or two. The plan is for Jonathan Taylor to play for the team in 2023, but if Taylor feels like the relationship is beyond repair, then that could change. That the Colts haven't worked out Ezekiel Elliott, Leonard Fournette, or Kareem Hunt is a sign that they aren't seriously planning to be without Taylor this year... yet.

Raiders | Vegas works out two RBs    Wed Jul 26, 02:47 AM

Free-agent RBs Benny Snell (Steelers) and Abram Smith (Saints) worked out for the Las Vegas Raiders on Tuesday, July 25.

Footballguys view: Snell spent part of this offseason working out for the Broncos but did not make the team. Smith was with the Saints for part of last offseason after he was undrafted out of Baylor. The Raiders need more bodies at the position because starting RB Josh Jacobs is staying away from the team.

Broncos | Denver takes a look at three veterans    Tue Jun 13, 02:26 PM

Free-agent RB Benny Snell, PK Randy Bullock and RB Ryan Nall are trying out for the Denver Broncos during minicamp.

Footballguys view: The Broncos are going to run the heck out of the ball this year. Under new HC Sean Payton, the Broncos' offense could look like the 2021 Saints. That means they'll need a deep group of backs to get through the season. We imagine the Broncos use a 50-50 split between RB Javonte Williams and RB Samaje Perine.

Steelers | Benny Snell embracing limited role    Thu Aug 4, 09:53 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers RB Benny Snell said he expects to spend most of his time on special teams this season. 'Hands down, I'm that,' Snell said. 'That's my main role.'

Footballguys view: Najee Harris is the starter and clear lead back for the Steelers. In fact, the Steelers are going to lean on Harris early and often. Snell is competing with Anthony McFarland to be the primary backup to Harris, but neither will get much playing time unless injuries strike.

Steelers | RB Snell Slimmed Down    Thu Jun 30, 03:55 PM

Mark Kaboly, from The Athletic, reports Pittsburgh Steelers RB Benny Snell "has slimmed down and transformed his body into something more typical of a running back, which should help his quickness."

Footballguys view: Snell should be the primary backup to Najee Harris, but undrafted rookie Mataeo Durant has been impressing during offseason workouts. We'll see this battle for the no.2 job with the Steelers get hammered out during training camp and the preseason. Those looking for a handcuff to Harris are going to have to wait to see who comes out on top.

Steelers | Mataeo Durant pushing for RB2 role?    Tue Jun 21, 02:32 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers undrafted free-agent Mataeo Durant could 'make a run' at Benny Snell's job as the main backup to Najee Harris, according to ESPN.com Brooke Pryor.

Footballguys view: Keep an eye on this situation in training camp. Undrafted out of Duke this year, Durant has good burst to the edge as a runner. He lacks true breakaway speed, but Durant's footwork helps him gash defenses for big plays with efficient movement. Durant needs a lot of work in pass protection, something all rookie RBs need to concern themselves with. He could be an important player for Fantasy GMs who play in deeper leagues and want a handcuff to Harris.

Steelers | Wild Card recap for Pittsburgh    Sun Jan 16, 11:31 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger completed 29-of-44 passes for 215 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions in the AFC wild-card round game against the Kansas City Chiefs. RB Najee Harris rushed 12 times for 29 yards while adding a pair of catches, RB Benny Snell Jr. rushed twice for 15 yards while posting two grabs for 16 yards, and RB Kalen Ballage had four runs for 13 yards. WR James Washington ended up with two catches for a team-high 37 yards and a touchdown, WR Diontae Johnson finished with 34 yards and a score on five receptions and 10 targets, while WR JuJu Smith-Schuster posted five receptions for 26 yards. WR Chase Claypool ended up with three catches for 25 yards on seven targets, while TE Pat Freiermuth ended up with four grabs and 25 yards and WR Ray-Ray McCloud rounded things out with two receptions and 20 yards.

Steelers | Pittsburgh picks up victory in Week 18    Sun Jan 9, 05:58 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger went 30-for-44 for 244 yards, one touchdown and one interception against the Baltimore Ravens in Week 18. WR Chase Claypool rushed for 33 yards on three carries and caught five passes for 37 yards and one touchdown on seven targets. RB Najee Harris rushed for 28 yards on 11 carries and caught four passes for 27 yards. RB Benny Snell rushed for 22 yards on 12 carries. TE Pat Freiermuth caught six passes for 53 yards on nine targets. WR Diontae Johnson caught seven passes for 51 yards on 10 targets. TE Zach Gentry caught four passes for 39 yards on five targets, while WR Ray-Ray McCloud caught four passes for 37 yards on nine targets.

Footballguys view: Roethlisberger led a stirring fourth quarter touchdown drive and overtime field goal drive to get the Steelers into the playoffs as long as the Raiders and Chargers don't tie. Harris was mostly ineffective, but getting to the corner in overtime made the game winner a chipshot. The Roethlisberger era will last one more week in Kansas City unless the painfully improbably happens in Las Vegas.

Steelers | Benny Snell not a lock for roster?    Thu Jul 8, 10:20 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers RB Benny Snell's roster spot could be in jeopardy after the offseason additions of RB Najee Harris and RB Kalen Ballage, according to Brooke Pryor of ESPN.com.

Footballguys view: Harris will be the starter and the lead back for the Steelers this year. Ballage has bounced around the league a bit but he has flashed a bit as a runner and receiver out of the backfield. Add in change-of-pace back Anthony McFarland and you can see how things are cramped. Snell has a determined style with little flash to his game. He should make the 53-man roster, and you could make the argument that he's the best suited to be the primary backup to Harris in 2021. We'll see how this shakes out in training camp.

Steelers | PIT expected to use early draft pick on RB    Sun Apr 18, 11:38 AM

The Pittsburgh Steelers are expected to select a starting-caliber running back in the first two rounds of the NFL Draft. The team views RBs Benny Snell, Anthony McFarland Jr. and Kalen Ballage as backup options but does not believe they are dynamic enough to be considered featured backs.

Footballguys view: The Steelers have an interesting collection of running backs, each with varying skill sets but nobody who is going to strike fear into an opponent. This is a great draft class for running backs, so even if they wait until Day 2 of the draft they should be able to find a starting-caliber back from the bunch. No matter who they add, the Steelers backfield is shaping up to be a RBBC early on until someone emerges.

Pittsburgh Steelers RB Benny Snell will serve as the main running back for the Steelers in Week 12 with RB James Conner (illness) sidelined, according to head coach Mike Tomlin.

Steelers | James Conner, Benny Snell to split carries    Sun Sep 20, 11:14 AM

Pittsburgh Steelers RBs James Conner and Benny Snell will reportedly split carries during Week 2's game against the Denver Broncos.

Steelers | Benny Snell worked for his yards    Sat Jun 20, 11:16 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers RB Benny Snell's 1.2 yards before contact were tied for the fewest in the NFL in 2019, but he was tied for fifth with 2.8 yards after contact.

Footballguys view: This is an indictment of the line and a sign that Snell might have more to his game this year with a quarterback that will force defenses to honor the pass, but he is still not an essential hold in dynasty leagues with the addition of Anthony McFarland in the fourth round of the draft.

Steelers | Coach expects more from Benny Snell    Mon May 25, 04:12 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers RB Benny Snell should be able to be more productive for the Steelers this upcoming season since he will be more comfortable playing in the NFL, according to head coach Mike Tomlin.

Footballguys view: The Steelers may reduce the workload for James Conner this year. That leads to more time for Snell (among others). The Steelers have an interesting collection of backs and we'll see how this RBBC shakes out. In addition to Conner and Snell, the team drafted scatback Anthony McFarland out of Maryland this year. They also still have the multi-dimensional Jaylen Samuels in the RB room as well. Let's see how this shakes out in camp and the preseason.

Steelers | Benny Snell produced when asked    Sat Apr 11, 09:31 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers RB Benny Snell topped 90 rushing yards in both of his starts as a rookie and ran for at least 63 rushing yards in four of the five games when he was given at least 16 carries.

Footballguys view: A fourth-round pick out of Kentucky in the 2019 NFL draft, Snell produced when called upon for the Steelers last year. James Conner is still the lead back but with his injury history, the team could turn to Snell a bit more this season.
