Jets | Seven players released Sat Aug 23, 11:00 PM
The New York Jets have released OT Bruce Campbell, LB Steele Devitto, OT Patrick Ford, PK Andrew Furney, P Jake Schum, RB Michael Smith and OT Markus Zusevics.
Footballguys view: It looks like fantasy owners in super deep dynasty leagues can move on from Smith. He didn't make it with the Bucs, and now the Jets have decided to let him go as well. |

Jets | Sign Michael Smith Fri Aug 1, 05:35 PM
The New York Jets signed RB Michael Smith (Buccaneers) Friday, Aug. 1. Terms of the contract were not disclosed.
Footballguys view: Smith is a smallish speed back who was a teammate of Seattle Seahawk back Robert Turbin at Utah State. The Jets now have three backs known for their straight line speed on the roster with Smith, Chris Johnson, and Daryl Richardson. |

Eagles | Could have interest in Michael Smith Thu May 15, 07:46 PM
The Philadelphia Eagles could meet with free-agent RB Michael Smith (foot) in the upcoming weeks, because they have interest in him. Smith is currently recovering from a foot injury.
Footballguys view: Smith has speed to burn. So long as he is healthy, he will bring that speed to a new team after the Bucs let him go. Smith can change direction without losing much speed, and he would be a fine fit in Chip Kelly's offense. |

Buccaneers | Waive Michael Smith Tue May 13, 04:07 PM
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers waived RB Michael Smith Tuesday, May 13.
Footballguys view: Smith was a speed back, but there's no room for him on the roster since Charles Sims was drafted in the third round. He might find it difficult to latch on with another team. |

Buccaneers | Two players placed on IR Mon Aug 26, 04:38 PM
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have placed RB Michael Smith (foot) and CB Anthony Gaitor (knee) on Injured Reserve.
Footballguys view: An important note for fantasy owners looking to handcuff Doug Martin. At this time it looks like rookie Mike James (Miami) will be the primary backup. Smith has electric speed but needs to get healthy and prove himself next year in camp. |

Buccaneers | Several in mix for return jobs Tue Jul 23, 01:57 AM
Tampa Bay Buccaneers RB Matt X. Brown, WR Eric Page, RB Michael Smith and WR Tiquan Underwood are expected to compete for the return jobs during training camp, which opens Wednesday, July 24. RB Jeff Demps is expected to report to the team late in the preseason, and he is expected to be in the mix as well.
Footballguys view: Page is a quick twitch player who can make defenders miss in the open field. Smith is competing for the primary backup RB job behind Doug Martin. He's got the speed to take it to the house on any play. Underwood is a savvy veteran who is a favorite of the staff. |

Buccaneers | Michael Smith favored over rookie Mike James Tue Jun 25, 08:45 PM
The Buccaneers have an interesting battle at the backup RB position behind starter Doug Martin. Some have penciled in rookie Mike James (Miami) as the handcuff but that may not be the case. Scott Reynolds, from Pewter Report Magazine, tells Cecil Lammey that second-year RB Michael Smith has been getting some first-team work, nickel offense, and third-and-long reps with the first team this offseason. James has barely been used and is getting fewer reps than 5'5" Matt Brown at this time.
Footballguys view: An interesting situation for fantasy owners to monitor here. Doug Martin doesn't have durability problems but if you spend a high pick on him then handcuffing a guy like Smith in the last round makes sense (if you have a deep bench). Smith is an incredibly fast back who can cut crisply at speed. The team would likely use FB Brian Leonard a bit more if Martin went down. |

Buccaneers | Mike James expected to have edge for No. 2 RB job Sun May 26, 12:41 PM
Tampa Bay Buccaneers RB Mike James is expected to have the edge over RBs Brian Leonard and Michael Smith for the No. 2 running back job during training camp.
Footballguys view: James is a decent player who can run between the tackles. However, he lacks the big play ability of Smith or the versatility of Leonard. If Doug Martin were to go down the Bucs would likely use a form of RBBC featuring all three backs. This isn't a situation to look for a handcuff. |

Buccaneers | Michael Smith to serve as top kickoff returner Tue Sep 4, 11:56 PM
Tampa Bay Buccaneers RB Michael Smith is listed as the team's top kickoff returner on their initial regular season depth chart.
Footballguys view: Smith is blazing fast and can change direction without losing much speed. He won't get enough touches as the team's 3rd RB to be a consideration in return yardage leagues. |

Updating a previous report, Tampa Bay Buccaneers RBs Mossis Madu and Michael Smith are battling for the No. 3 running back job. Madu carried 11 times for 23 yards Wednesday, Aug. 29, against the Washington Redskins, while Smith had four carries for four yards and an 11-yard reception.

Buccaneers | Mossis Madu, Michael Smith fighting for No. 3 RB job Thu Aug 30, 01:52 AM
Tampa Bay Buccaneers RBs Mossis Madu and Michael Smith are battling for the No. 3 running back job. It is possible only one will survive the final roster cuts.
Footballguys view: We like Smith in this competition. He's very fast and changes direction without losing much speed. Fantasy owners in deep dynasty leagues should add Smith to their roster as he's got the upside to be a starter someday. |

Buccaneers | Mossis Madu in battle for roster spot Wed Aug 22, 05:33 PM

Buccaneers | Michael Smith looking for starting job Fri Jul 20, 05:18 PM
Tampa Bay Buccaneers RB Michael Smith said he is going to training camp looking to win the starting running back job and make an immediate impact on offense.
Footballguys view: Smith is a speedy smaller back who could win a few change of pace touches. We like his competitive fire, but he won't pass LeGarrette Blount or Doug Martin on the depth chart in training camp. |

Buccaneers | Several options for return duties Mon Jun 11, 03:00 PM
Tampa Bay Buccaneers special teams coach Bob Ligashesky said RB Michael Smith and WRs Preston Parker, Sammie Stroughter and Mike Williams are candidates to handle the return duties this season.
Footballguys view: The interesting name there is Williams, who was the team's number one wide receiver when the season ended. This is another sign that there will be less emphasis on Williams' offensive involvement now that Vincent Jackson is in Tampa. |

Buccaneers | Seventh round draft choices signed Mon May 7, 04:36 PM
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have signed seventh-round draft choice RB Michael Smith and TE Drake Dunsmore to four-year deals. Financial terms were not disclosed.
Footballguys view: We loved the late addition of Smith in the 2012 NFL Draft. Our very own Cecil Lammey watched Smith from the sideline at practice for the Players All Star Classic in Little Rock, AR earlier this year and came away impressed. Smith's game is all about speed, and he can get up to his top gear in the blink of an eye. He also can maintain his speed when he changes direction and should make a nice change of pace RB behind Doug Martin this year. |

Buccaneers | Turned down trade to pick Michael Smith Sun Apr 29, 10:08 PM
Tampa Bay Buccaneers general manager Mark Dominik indicated that an undisclosed team offered a sixth round pick in the 2013 NFL Draft to move up to Tampa's spot in the sixth round to pick RB Michael Smith. However, Dominik declined and picked him with the No. 212 pick overall. 'I think every time Mark and I watched tape he would jump off the tape at you, just a different kind of speed than everybody else on the field,' head coach Greg Schiano said. 'How we utilize that is going to be our job.'
Footballguys view: We love this value pick. Our very own Cecil Lammey was extremely impressed by Smith earlier this year at the Players All Star Classic college All Star Game. Smith is extremely fast, can get to top speed in the blink of an eye, and doesn't lose much speed when changing direction. |
