Ravens | Two re-signed Sat Jul 30, 01:42 AM
The Baltimore Ravens withdrew their restricted free-agent tenders to WR Marcus Smith and RB Jalen Parmele. The players were then re-signed.
Footballguys view: Parmele should back up Ray Rice this season. He could be a very important player in fantasy leagues if Rice goes down. |

Ravens | Marcus Smith took part in individual drills at minicamp Fri May 14, 04:44 PM
Baltimore Ravens WR Marcus Smith (knee) was able to participate in individual drills during the team's minicamp last weekend, reports Ken Murray, of The Baltimore Sun. Smith has not been cleared to participate in team drills.
Footballguys view: Marcus Smith has the potential to be a trusted receiver for Joe Flacco, but he's struggled to stay healthy during his pro career. In college he reminded some in the scouting community of Anquan Boldin because of his run after the catch ability. Now he gets to learn side by side with Boldin, but Smith is clearly on the roster bubble in 2010. He'll have to not only stay healthy, but Smith must stand out on a team with such a logjam at receiver. |

Mike Duffy, of BaltimoreRavens.com, reports the Baltimore Ravens held WR Marcus Smith (knee) out of the team's minicamp because he is recovering from a knee injury.
Footballguys view: Smith had good run after the catch ability in college, but has failed to stay healthy during his pro career. |

Ravens | Demetrius Williams, others will have to fight for roster spot Mon Apr 26, 12:01 AM
The Baltimore Ravens are deeper at wide receiver this year than they have been in years, possibly ever, and they probably won't carry more than five receivers on their active roster entering the season, reports Jamison Hensley, of The Baltimore Sun. WRs Demetrius Williams, Marcus Smith and Justin Harper will have to fight to make the team's final roster.
Footballguys view: This assumes that free agent acquisition Donte Stallworth and fading former first-round pick Mark Clayton will make the final roster, which we aren't completely convinced of. |

Ravens | M. Smith hopes to be healthy for camp Thu Mar 18, 12:29 PM
Mike Duffy, of BaltimoreRavens.com, reports Baltimore Ravens WR Marcus Smith (knee) said he hopes his injured knee is fully healthy for the start of training camp.
Footballguys view: Smith has flashed potential during his pro career, but has been oft-injured. He'll have to be healthy if he wants to make the final roster because of all the additions the Ravens have made at wide receiver. Some in the scouting community compared him to Anquan Boldin when he came out of college, and now he'll get to work with the star veteran wideout. |

Ravens | M. Smith undergoes surgery Wed Sep 9, 03:47 PM
Edward Lee, of The Baltimore Sun, reports Baltimore Ravens WR Marcus Smith (knee) underwent surgery to repair his torn anterior cruciate ligament Tuesday, Sept. 8. He hopes to be ready for the start of next season.
Footballguys view: We like Smith's overall game, as he plays a little like Anquan Boldin with strong run after the catch ability. He'll have to battle back from this injury, and prove that he can stay healthy before we get too excited about his dynasty value. |

Ravens | M. Smith has a torn ACL, out for the year Fri Aug 14, 07:48 PM
The Baltimore Sun is reporting Ravens wide receiver Marcus Smith is out for the season after tearing the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee, his agent confirmed today. Smith, who was vying for one of the top four wide receiver spots, injured his knee in the second quarter of Thursday's 23-0 win over the Washington Redskins. There is no timetable set for surgery but it could occur in the next week if the swelling goes down. "He was having a good camp and had an opportunity for a lot of reps," said Kevin Omell, Smith's agent. "He was looking to build upon a good rookie season. He's disappointed and down, but he's a very resilient kid."
Footballguys view: This is terrible news for a player that had an opportunity for a bigger role this year because of all the injuries in the Ravens WR corps. This could open the door for a player like Kelley Washington. |

Ravens | M. Smith injured Thursday Fri Aug 14, 02:33 AM
Jamison Hensley, of The Baltimore Sun, reports Baltimore Ravens WR Marcus Smith (knee) limped off the field in the second quarter of the team's preseason game Thursday, Aug. 13. Smith was on crutches after the game and said he could have torn his ACL or MCL.
Footballguys view: Camp sensation Justin Harper had a productive night, including a 19-yard TD, so Smith is behind in the race to be the team's #4 WR regardless of the extent of his knee injury. |

Ravens | Watch out for Justin Harper and Marcus Smith Thu Aug 13, 07:51 PM
Masnsports.com notes that if you're interested in keeping close tabs on a wide receiver or two, watch Marcus Smith and Justin Harper. Both are second-year guys who have impressed at different points throughout the offseason. Smith, a fourth-round pick in '08, looked great in OTAs but his play has dipped a bit in camp (possibly because of dehydration issues that caused him to lose nearly 35 pounds in three days). The New Mexico product (6-foot-1, 215) is a strong, physical possession receiver who usually has good hands but has struggled with drops the last few days in camp. Harper (a seventh-round choice out of Virginia Tech) held his own in OTAs but has really come on since reporting to Westminster. The 6-foot-3, 215 pound receiver is more of a deep threat than his friend and fellow wide receiver, and he's shown the ability to make big-time plays throughout camp.
Footballguys view: Smith has strong run after the catch ability and plays like a "lite" version of Anquan Boldin. The player we really like here is Justin Harper. He is a big, fast, and physical wide receiver that will stretch the defense. The Ravens have been looking for a deep threat to complement Joe Flacco's strong arm, and Justin Harper may be just the guy they're looking for. With Mark Clayton banged up (again) Harper is getting a chance to shine. |

Ravens | Marcus Smith gaining confidence Mon Jul 13, 07:35 PM
Aaron Wilson, of the Carroll County Times, reports that 2008 fourth-round pick WR Marcus Smith has "rebuilt his confidence" and been sure-handed in minicamp after having some bad drops during games last year. Smith also had some great plays in camp last year before his problems during the season, and Wilson writes, "It's impossible to predict whether he'll regress again when it counts, but my educated hunch is that he'll at least be a minor contributor this season."
Footballguys view: Like Wilson's musings on Demetrius Williams, this becomes that much more relevant with the news of Derrick Mason's retirement. Smith is the heaviest returning Ravens WR at 6'1" 215, and he'll be expected to step up no matter what else the Ravens do at his position between now and the beginning of the season. |

Ravens | Marcus Smith is the favorite to be the 4th receiver this year Sat Jun 27, 04:00 PM
Mike Duffy, from BaltimoreRavens.com, reports that 2nd-year WR Marcus Smith is in line to be the 4th-string WR for the team - if they don't add a veteran receiver.
Footballguys view: Smith plays like a poor man's Anquan Boldin, but he does flash the ability to make big plays. While at New Mexico Smith switched from RB to WR (in 2006) and is still learning the intricacies of the position. He doesn't try hard on every play, but has the type of run after the catch ability that could take defenses by surprise. He runs good routes and has soft hands, so if Mark Clayton and Demetrius Williams have problems staying healthy in '09 we could see Smith play - and succeed in - a bigger role. |

Ravens | Smith working hard in practice Mon Jun 15, 08:16 PM
Mike Preston, of the Baltimore Sun, reports that second year receiver Marcus Smith has been getting a lot of work with Mark Clayton, Derrick Mason, and Demetrius Williams all missing time, but that he hasn't distinguished himself except as a hard worker.
Footballguys view: Smith was a running back earlier in his collegiate career at New Mexico before becoming a wide receiver. He was a fourth round pick in 2008 and has a chance to make an impact because he's the biggest wide receiver who is likely to make the team. |

Ravens | Flacco and Smith developing chemistry Fri May 8, 07:41 PM
James Walker, of ESPN.com, reports Baltimore Ravens QB Joe Flacco seems to be developing good chemistry with WR Marcus Smith. Smith made some big plays during minicamp Friday, May 8.
Footballguys view: Marcus Smith is able to take advantage of receivers above him on the depth chart taking some time off during minicamp. Smith is a strong WR that has good run after the catch ability. The Ravens failed to add a WR in the NFL Draft so maybe they feel the guys they already have will develop into nice receiving weapons. |
