Packers | Considered some veteran free agent backs    Wed Sep 15, 02:41 AM

The Green Bay Packers considered signing free-agent RB Willie Parker (Redskins), as well as Justin Fargas (Broncos), Kolby Smith (Chiefs) and J.J. Arrington (Eagles), reports Tom Silverstein, of The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. However, general manager Ted Thompson viewed them as poor fits for the team's zone running game.

Footballguys view: The Packers now how to find RB talent that fits their system. Dynasty owners should certainly keep an eye on rookie Dimitri Nance.

Jaguars | Kolby Smith to be released    Fri Sep 3, 02:18 PM

Jaguars | Kolby Smith signed    Wed Aug 25, 01:05 PM

The Jacksonville Jaguars have signed unrestricted free-agent RB Kolby Smith (Broncos), reports Aaron Wilson, of NationalFootballPost.com. Terms of the contract were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: Smith was in Broncos camp earlier this year, but did little to stand out. He gives the Jags depth at the RB position while rookie Deji Karim sits out the rest of the preseason due to a thumb injury.

Broncos | Time to look at depth running backs    Sun Aug 1, 07:35 PM

With Denver Broncos RBs Knowshon Moreno (hamstring) and Correll Buckhalter (back) banged up, the Broncos will need to take a further look at RBs Bruce Hall, Lance Ball, Kolby Smith and Toney Baker during training camp, reports Mike Klis, of The Denver Post.

Footballguys view: Baker is the most intriguing prospect of the group, a big, rugged RB with good speed for his size.

Broncos | Will unlikely pursue Brian Westbrook    Wed Jun 16, 09:42 AM

The Denver Broncos are unlikely to sign free-agent RB Brian Westbrook (Eagles) after adding RB Kolby Smith off waivers from the Kansas City Chiefs, according to The Denver Post.

Footballguys view: The Broncos are expecting Smith to compete with J.J. Arrington in training camp. Denver is looking for a third-down back, and one of these two veterans could fill that role.

Broncos | Kolby Smith claimed off waivers    Tue Jun 15, 05:56 PM

Cecil Lammey, NFL Insider for Lincoln Financial Media and senior writer for Footballguys.com, reports the Denver Broncos have claimed free-agent RB Kolby Smith (Chiefs) off waivers.

Footballguys view: Smith has flashed a little bit of ability during his pro career, but has struggled with injuries. He's not a big play guy, but a grinder who could give the Broncos quality veteran depth. This is just another indication that the Broncos have moved away from the idea of signing Brian Westbrook.

Chiefs | Kolby Smith waived    Mon Jun 14, 04:15 PM

The Kansas City Chiefs have announced they have waived RB Kolby Smith.

Footballguys view: There was no room for Smith anymore after the Chiefs acquired Thomas Jones. Kansas City will go with Dantrell Savage and Javarris Williams behind Jones and Jamaal Charles.

Chiefs | Several expected to compete for No. 3 RB job    Sat May 29, 04:24 PM

Kansas City Chiefs RBs Kolby Smith, Javarris Williams, Jackie Battle and Kestahn Moore are expected to compete for the team's No. 3 running back job if they want a traditional runner to hold the position, reports Josh Looney, of KCChiefs.com. WR Dexter McCluster and FB Tim Castille could also be in contention for the job if the team wants a player than can play multiple positions as their third back.

Footballguys view: Dexter McCluster is going to be an all-purpose player for the Chiefs. Even though he's not the biggest running back he is a willing inside runner. Last season for Ole Miss he had four straight 100-yard rushing games, including a 282-yard performance against Tennessee. While he's expected to play the 'Wes Welker' role for the Chiefs, we wouldn't be surprised if he lined up in the backfield with Jamaal Charles on some passing downs.

Kent Babb, of The Kansas City Star, reports Kansas City Chiefs RB Kolby Smith's (ankle) ankle injury could be season-ending, and he could be placed on Injured Reserve.

Footballguys view: The Chiefs are currently down to one healthy tailback on the roster, Jamaal Charles. Look for them to make a move before the game vs. the Broncos this weekend.

Chiefs | K. Smith not practicing Friday    Fri Dec 4, 12:12 PM

Josh Looney, of KCChiefs.com, reports Kansas City Chiefs RB Kolby Smith (ankle) is not participating in practice Friday, Dec. 4.

Footballguys view: This injury could open the door for Dantrell Savage. However, it looks like Todd Haley figured out that Jamaal Charles should be the featured runner, and Savage may not get that many snaps on Sunday against the Broncos.

Adam Teicher, of The Kansas City Star, reports Kansas City Chiefs RB Kolby Smith (ankle) and LB Dave Herron (knee) will likely play Week 12 against the San Diego Chargers.

KCChiefs.com reports Kansas City Chiefs RB Kolby Smith (ankle) suffered an ankle sprain in Week 11, but was able to participate in practice Tuesday, Nov. 24, and looked to be running at full speed.

Footballguys view: Jamaal Charles has clearly emerged as the feature back for the Chiefs, so Smith's role is diminishing - even if he was fully healthy.

Chiefs | K. Smith could start Week 10    Thu Nov 12, 10:40 AM

Kent Babb, of The Kansas City Star, reports Kansas City Chiefs head coach Todd Haley would not rule out the possibility of RB Kolby Smith starting in Week 10.

Footballguys view: Regardless of who starts we should see both Jamaal Charles and Kolby Smith on Sunday. If the Chiefs get down early (as they have a tendency to do) then Charles makes a better option at running back because of his receiving ability and moves in the open field. Smith's main value could be as the team's goal line back.

Chiefs | Likely to use running-back-by committee    Tue Nov 10, 03:24 PM

Adam Teicher, of The Kansas City Star, reports the Kansas City Chiefs are likely to use a running-back-by-committee with free-agent RB Larry Johnson (Chiefs) gone. The committee will include RBs Kolby Smith, Jamaal Charles and Dantrell Savage. Charles started and played more snaps in Week 9, but Smith could eventually take more of the workload. The team still appears hesitant to give the ball to Charles in running formations.

Footballguys view: Jamaal Charles is better and more explosive in space, but Kolby Smith is a better runner between the tackles and at the goalline. With the Chiefs playing in catch up mode frequently, it could mean more of Jamaal Charles because of his ability as a receiver out of the backfield.

Chiefs | Running backs get limited opportunities in Week 9    Mon Nov 9, 11:09 AM

Adam Teicher, of The Kansas City Star, reports Kansas City Chiefs RBs Jamaal Charles and Kolby Smith combined to average more than five yards per carry in Week 9. However, the team gave the tandem the football only 10 times during the game. The Chiefs ran a total of 12 running plays, while QB Matt Cassel threw 39 times. The Chiefs' opponent, the Jacksonville Jaguars, surprised the team by playing mostly a 4-3 defense during the game. 'It wasn't what we practiced against,' head coach Todd Haley said. 'I thought for the most part we had an idea of what was going on.(The offensive imbalance) was all predicated (on the defense). On a lot of our runs, there was a lot of pressure coming. They were bringing safeties from both edges, run blitzes we call them.'

Chiefs | Charles, K. Smith combine for 10 carries Week 9    Sun Nov 8, 04:42 PM

The Associated Press reports Kansas City Chiefs RB Jamaal Charles rushed for 36 yards on six carries in Week 9 while RB Kolby Smith rushed for 17 yards on four carries in the game.

Footballguys view: The Chiefs seemed to abandon the run without Larry Johnson in the lineup.

Chiefs | K. Smith activated from PUP list    Sat Nov 7, 05:45 PM

The Kansas City Chiefs have announced they have activated RB Kolby Smith (knee) from the Physically Unable to Perform list.

Footballguys view: Word is the Chiefs are going to bring him along slowly as he comes back from his knee injury. However, if Jamaal Charles continues to have fumbling problems then we could see more of Smith than anyone is expecting. Smith isn't as explosive as Charles, but he is a better runner between the tackles.

Chiefs | Smith unlikely to get many carries    Thu Nov 5, 10:28 AM

Kent Babb, of The Kansas City Star, reports Kansas City Chiefs RB Kolby Smith (knee) likely will not get many carries in Week 9.

Footballguys view: The Chiefs are going to ease him back into the lineup, but if Jamaal Charles continues to have fumbling problems we could see an expanded role for Smith in future weeks.

Chiefs | Charles has opportunity to be featured running back in Week 9    Wed Nov 4, 12:42 PM

Adam Teicher, of The Kansas City Star, reports Week 9 will provide the Kansas City Chiefs with an opportunity to get a good look at RB Jamaal Charles as their featured back due to the suspension of RB Larry Johnson. 'I think this is an opportunity for Jamaal,' head coach Todd Haley said, 'without a doubt.' Charles makes more sense as a featured back in Week 9 over RB Kolby Smith (knee) because Smith hasn't played since injuring a knee midway through last season. However, Charles has only 23 carries in seven games this season, and most have been draws and other runs out of passing formations.

Footballguys view: Charles is an explosive back, and very dangerous in the open field. However, he has fumbling issues and is not much of a force running between the tackles. Smith may be eased back into the lineup, but he's a more capable inside runner and could win the starting job if Charles proves to be ineffective.

Chiefs | Likely to activate Ko. Smith for Week 9    Wed Nov 4, 10:09 AM

Adam Teicher, of The Kansas City Star, reports Kansas City Chiefs head coach Todd Haley stopped short of saying the team would activate RB Kolby Smith (knee) for Week 9, but he did indicate it was likely. 'I'm optimistic about having the opportunity to see him play,' Haley said of Smith.

Footballguys view: Smith is a more versatile player than Jamaal Charles, and the RB situation in KC could be a full blown RBBC. Charles is a more explosive back, but has a fumbling problem and doesn't run well between the tackles. Smith could get the short yardage and goalline carries because he's better suited to run inside.

Smith said, "My leg was in a cast for six weeks straight. Then I had to learn how to bend it and lift it again. It was a whole bunch of stuff." Smith said he went through his first hit last week. He added, "It was instant. Right there all of the jitters went out of my and I'm good now. I am very confident in my body."

Chiefs | Ko. Smith practicing with the team    Wed Oct 28, 08:11 PM

Josh Looney, of KCChiefs.com, reports Kansas City Chiefs RB Kolby Smith (knee) is now practicing with the team. He has not officially been activated, and that move could come at any moment over the next two weeks.

Footballguys view: Smith is probably the most well-rounded back on the roster after Larry Johnson, so he could be in line for more work once he's activated.

Chiefs | Smith could come off PUP soon    Tue Oct 13, 03:30 AM

Adam Teicher, of The Kansas City Star, reports Kansas City Chiefs RB Kolby Smith (knee) becomes eligible to return to practice and the active roster next week. He has been on the team's physically unable to perform list the first part of the season. Smith may eventually receive a look at least as a part-time back. Smith said he feels good, but he still needs to go through contact drills to see how his knee responds. 'Whenever they say I can play, I'll be out there. I want to make sure I'm right before I come back,' Smith noted.

Footballguys view: Smith is only a modestly talented back, and there's no way he can succeed where Larry Johnson has failed.

Chiefs | Charles could be running out of time to prove worth    Thu Oct 8, 11:47 PM

Adam Teicher, of The Kansas City Star, reports Kansas City Chiefs RB Jamaal Charles' time to prove his worth to the team could be running out.

Footballguys view: RB Kolby Smith (knee) is eligible to be activated later in October, and Smith could become the team's No. 2 running back ahead of Charles. Dantrell Savage is another option to become the primary backup to Larry Johnson. However, Charles may still figure into the team's plans. If the Chiefs don't view him as a regular, then he could still be used as a spot player capable of causing matchup problems for opposing defenses.
