Seahawks | Week 9 injury report for Seattle    Fri Nov 1, 05:41 PM

Seattle Seahawks S Quandre Diggs (hamstring) and DE Quinton Jefferson (oblique) were unable to practice all week and are listed as doubtful for Week 9 against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. S Lano Hill (elbow) was limited in practice for a second straight day on Friday, Nov. 1, and is also listed as doubtful. OT Duane Brown (biceps, knee) was limited all week, while S Ugo Amadi (non-injury) was added to the injury report Friday after a limited practice, but both players no longer appear on the injury report. OT Jamarco Jones (knee), S Bradley McDougald (back), CB Tre Flowers (neck), S Marquise Blair (shoulder), QB Russell Wilson (knee), DE Ziggy Ansah (ankle), LB K.J. Wright (knee), WR Tyler Lockett (non-injury), RB Chris Carson (non-injury), LB Bobby Wagner (non-injury), CB Neiko Thorpe (tooth), DT Al Woods (neck), OG Mike Iupati (knee), DE Jadeveon Clowney (knee) and QB Geno Smith (oblique) practiced in full and have also been removed from the injury report.

Footballguys view: The Seahawks are thin at safety right now, so that could play into the hands of Chris Godwin and Mike Evans. Jameis Winston is a solid play in Seattle as long as he doesn't get himself benched with another turnover fest.

Seahawks | Geno Smith the backup in Seattle    Sat Aug 31, 07:53 AM

Seattle Seahawks QB Geno Smith will serve as the backup quarterback this season.

Footballguys view: Smith beat out 2016 first-round pick (Broncos) Paxton Lynch. Even with a minor knee issue in the preseason, Smith did enough to earn the No. 2 job behind Russell Wilson. Perhaps Lynch can stay on the team's practice squad.

Seattle Seahawks QB Geno Smith (knee) was removed in the second quarter Thursday, Aug. 29, due to a knee injury.   Seahawks | Geno Smith to start despite injury    Wed Aug 7, 07:25 PM

Seattle Seahawks QB Geno Smith (undisclosed) will be the starting quarterback for the preseason game Thursday, Aug. 8, and will be treated for his injury after the game.

Footballguys view: The team wants to see if Geno Smith can beat out Paxton Lynch for the No. 2 job behind Russell Wilson. Smith has more experience and that's why he's getting the nod...in addition to reports out of Seahawks camp say Smith has been the better of the two quarterbacks.

Seahawks | Geno Smith finds new home in Seattle    Mon May 13, 02:54 PM

Free-agent QB Geno Smith (Chargers) signed an undisclosed contract with the Seattle Seahawks on Monday, May 13.

Seahawks | Geno Smith headed to Seattle    Mon May 13, 10:16 AM

Free-agent QB Geno Smith (Chargers) is expected to sign with the Seattle Seahawks Monday, May 13. Terms weren't disclosed.

Footballguys view: Smith could win the backup job to Russell Wilson. The Seahawks have Paxton Lynch there, former first-round pick, but he's rarely flashed as a pro with the Broncos and is known to have questions about his work ethic. We'll see if Smith can win the no.2 job for the Seahawks.

Chargers | Cardale Jones in line for backup role    Sun Aug 12, 11:40 PM

Los Angeles Chargers QB Cardale Jones has an edge on QB Geno Smith for the backup quarterback job, according to Nick Shook of NFL.com.

Footballguys view: It's not a great group behind starter Philip Rivers. Fantasy GMs in dynasty formats may have been holding onto Jones (in super deep leagues), so continue to monitor his progress.

Chargers | Two battling for backup QB    Wed Aug 8, 03:40 PM

Los Angeles Chargers QBs Cardale Jones and Geno Smith are each listed as the team's No. 2 quarterback on the first unofficial depth chart of training camp with QB Nic Shimonek listed No. 4.

Footballguys view: Good thing Philip Rivers is one of the most durable players in the league. The Chargers would be in trouble if either one of these guys had to take over. Smith has plenty of starting experience from his time with the Jets while Jones has the big arm and athleticism. The Chargers are a favorite by many analysts to win the AFC West...so long as Rivers stays upright.

Chargers | Geno Smith impressing    Sat May 26, 11:37 PM

Los Angeles Chargers QB Geno Smith has 're-focused' himself, according to head coach Anthony Lynn, and Smith has been accurate throughout OTAs, according to Ricky Henne of Chargers.com.

Footballguys view: The Chargers are looking for a backup option to Philip Rivers in 2018. Smith signed a one-year contract with the Chargers for a fresh start earlier this offseason. He'll compete with Cardale Jones and rookie Nic Shimonek to establish the pecking order behind Rivers.

Chargers | More on Geno Smith's deal    Thu Apr 5, 06:05 PM

Updating a previous report, Los Angeles Chargers QB Geno Smith's one-year deal is worth $1 million.

Footballguys view: Geno Smith looked bad in his role as starter for the Giants for one game and Philip Rivers never gets hurt. There's no upside here.

Chargers | Geno Smith to join LAC    Sun Apr 1, 09:22 PM

Free-agent QB Geno Smith (Giants) has agreed to a one-year deal with the Los Angeles Chargers Sunday, April 1, according to a source.

Footballguys view: Smith could become the backup to Philip Rivers after starting once for the Giants last year in a memorable chain of events that saw Eli Manning get as much respect from football fans as he has gotten in years. Rivers is one of the most durable quarterbacks in the league, so we probably won't see much of Smith this year in any event.

Seahawks | Seattle to meet with Geno Smith    Thu Mar 29, 05:58 PM

Free-agent QB Geno Smith (Giants) is scheduled to meet with the Seattle Seahawks Thursday, March 29, and Friday, March 30, according to a source.

Footballguys view: Smith didn't show much in brief action with the Giants, and was a mess with the Jets. Maybe he'd find rebirth in Seattle but we're not sure we'd bet on it.

Chargers | Geno Smith visiting Chargers    Wed Mar 28, 12:43 PM

Free-agent QB Geno Smith (Giants) is visiting the Los Angeles Chargers Wednesday, March 28.

Footballguys view: The Chargers have unproven Cardale Jones behind Philip Rivers at this time. Perhaps they'd like more experience and veteran depth behind Rivers in the form of Smith. We've also heard the Chargers may consider selecting a quarterback with a premium pick (2nd round?) of the 2018 NFL draft.

Giants | Geno Smith unimpressive in starting role    Wed Nov 29, 11:19 PM

New York Giants QB Geno Smith has made 30 career starts in his five seasons in the NFL, posting a 71.1 QB Rating in those games. In all, he's completed 460-of-806 passes (57.1 percent) for 5,577 yards, while tossing 26 touchdowns compared to 34 interceptions. In addition, he's rushed 130 times for 607 yards, producing seven touchdowns on the ground as well. He's also lost seven fumbles.

Footballguys view: It's not impossible that Geno Smith suddenly plays better - and stay healthier - than he ever has before. Just improbable. Especially behind a lackluster offensive line with no real run game and practice squad wide receivers. We're not sure Davis Webb would fare better though. Meanwhile, Eli Manning mans the scout team.

Giants | Geno Smith named starting quarterback    Tue Nov 28, 03:34 PM

New York Giants QB Geno Smith will start in place of QB Eli Manning in Week 13. It is the first time in 13 years that Manning will not be starting a game for the Giants.

Footballguys view: Head coach Ben McAdoo said the Giants will take a look at both Smith and QB Davis Webb. We don't think they'll see much different from Smith, a castoff from the Jets. Webb was their third-round pick (Cal) in the 2017 NFL draft, and he looks like a prototypical quarterback. However, Webb plays like a robot and struggles under the slightest bit of pressure. We expect the Giants to select a potential franchise quarterback in the 2018 NFL draft.

New York Giants QB Geno Smith (knee) has been cleared to practice without restriction at the start of training camp, according to head coach Ben McAdoo.

Giants | Geno Smith has been limited    Sat Jun 3, 03:26 PM

New York Giants QB Geno Smith (knee) has been held out of team drills during organized team activities because he is coming back from a knee injury. He is not wearing a brace on his injured knee and has shown plenty of velocity while throwing the ball.

Footballguys view: Smith gets a fresh start with the Giants this year as he's competing with guys like Josh Johnson and rookie Davis Webb for the backup spot behind Eli Manning. Reports speculate that Smith will be full go for training camp.

Free-agent QB Geno Smith (Jets) signed an undisclosed deal with the New York Giants Monday, March 20. Free-agent CB Valentino Blake (Titans) was also signed.

Giants | Geno Smith likely to Giants    Fri Mar 17, 11:52 AM

Free-agent QB Geno Smith (Jets) will take a physical with the New York Giants, and he's expected to sign with them Monday, March 20.

Footballguys view: The Giants just re-signed Josh Johnson on Friday, so they would have Smith compete with Johnson to be the backup behind Eli Manning. Smith needed a fresh start because...well...it IS the Jets after all. However, we're not expecting him to do much of anything no matter where he goes to in the NFL.

Free-agent QB Geno Smith (Jets) is drawing interest from the Los Angeles Chargers and Cleveland Browns, in addition to the New York Giants, whom he visited on Saturday, March 11.

Footballguys view: Smith is unlikely to land a starting job, but he could work as veteran depth/backup for any of these teams that are showing interest. Things didn't work out with the Jets, and Smith could benefit from a fresh start.

Jets | Geno Smith open to being a backup    Mon Feb 27, 06:59 PM

New York Jets impending free-agent QB Geno Smith (knee) said he is open to being a backup for a team but believes he can still be a starter.

Footballguys view: He should be a full participant once training camp starts because he is in the fifth month of his recovery from knee surgery and was expected to be sidelined for six to eight months.

Jets | Door open for Geno Smith to return?    Sun Feb 26, 01:05 PM

Impending free-agent QB Geno Smith may be a candidate to serve as the veteran, low-cost bridge quarterback for the New York Jets in 2017, according to ESPN.com's Rich Cimini.

Footballguys view: The market isn't going to be white-hot for Smith's services this offseason. He could stay with the team to be the lead guy while a rookie is groomed to take over. The Jets may want to go after Tyrod Taylor first and foremost, but guys like Smith or Mike Glennon could be options as brige-QBs going forward.

Jets | Geno Smith unlikely to return    Sun Jan 8, 01:09 AM

New York Jets QB Geno Smith (knee) is unlikely to be back with the club in 2017, according to ESPN's Rich Cimini.

Footballguys view: No surprises here. The Jets have a mess at quarterback, and don't be surprised if they go back to the well in the 2017 NFL draft to find a passer. Smith is recovering from ACL surgery performed last November, and the team is expected to try and resolve the quarterback position during the spring, long before Smith is fully recovered.

Jets | Geno Smith to have surgery    Thu Nov 3, 01:28 PM

New York Jets QB Geno Smith (knee) is scheduled to have surgery next week to repair his torn anterior cruciate ligament, according to head coach Todd Bowles.

New York Jets QB Geno Smith (knee) was placed on the Reserve/Injured list Wednesday, Oct. 26, after a second opinion confirmed a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his knee.

New York Jets QB Geno Smith (knee) is believed to have torn his ACL in a Week 7 win over the Baltimore Ravens, according to sources.

Jets | Geno Smith believed to be OK    Mon Oct 24, 09:35 AM

Updating previous reports, New York Jets QB Geno Smith (knee) is believed to be OK, and the MRI on his knee is being deemed precautionary, according to a source.

Footballguys view: The Jets have a mess at the QB position right. Smith is okay, but Ryan Fitzpatrick might be their best starting option. However, they've got Bryce Petty and Christian Hackenberg on the roster and either one could be an eventual starter. Fantasy owners are best off avoiding this situation completely.

New York Jets QB Geno Smith is expected to be named the starting quarterback Wednesday, Oct. 19, according to league sources.

New York Jets QB Geno Smith is solidified as the club's No. 2 quarterback, according to head coach Todd Bowles.

Footballguys view: As expected, although we're not sure if we've reached endgame here with the Jets. Are they holding him to force a team to trade for him? Are they keeping four quarterbacks? Is Bryce Petty going to manage to end up on Injured Reserve for a bruised shoulder so they can save a roster spot? The Jets need to figure it out before tomorrow afternoon.
