Redskins | Alex Smith injury update    Wed Jun 5, 03:19 PM

Washington Redskins QB Alex Smith (leg) will need to wear the external fixator on his right leg for at least another month, according to head coach Jay Gruden.

Footballguys view: Gruden has alluded to the fact that Smith could return sooner than expected. While that's possible, nobody should be counting on that. Washington will have Case Keenum compete with 2019 first-round pick Dwayne Haskins for the starting job in training camp. If/when Smith returns, it might be just as the No. 3 quarterback.

Redskins | Alex Smith could return sooner than expected?    Tue Jun 4, 03:14 PM

Washington Redskins QB Alex Smith (knee) is still wearing the external fixator he's been sporting on his right leg since last year's severe break, but head coach Jay Gruden confirmed Tuesday, June 4, that Smith is 'recovering nicely' from his injury.

Footballguys view: Most thought Smith would never play again after the horrific leg injury he suffered last year. We'll see if he can return for Washington someday. Gruden reportedly also told Tom Pelissero of NFL Media that Smith will return sooner than most people think.

Redskins | Washington still has hope for Alex Smith    Sun Feb 17, 06:34 PM

Washington Redskins senior vice president of football operations Doug Williams said QB Alex Smith (leg) hopefully will be able to play at some point in 2019.

Footballguys view: Note how Williams says 'at some point' here. That doesn't mean at the beginning of the season and it may mean well into the regular season. We're hopeful for Smith as well but there's still a chance he never plays football again. Expect Washington to make a move at the quarterback position this offseason, either through the draft or free agency.

Redskins | Teammate doubts Alex Smith will play    Tue Feb 12, 03:14 PM

Washington Redskins QB Alex Smith (leg) is not expected to play this season, in the opinion of RB Chris Thompson. 'We know and understand that it's probably not going to happen that we have him this year,' Thompson admitted. The Redskins have discussed a new deal with QB Josh Johnson, but QB Colt McCoy is slated to start the year if Smith can't go.

Footballguys view: Smith's football future is certainly up in the air. Not only will he potentially miss the 2019 season, there is a chance that Smith may never be able to play football again. We hope that is not the case and will continue to monitor his recovery closely. Smith is in the midst of a an extensive recovery from a severe compound leg fracture late in the season.

Redskins | Alex Smith improving    Thu Jan 31, 08:20 PM

Washington Redskins QB Alex Smith (leg) is making improvements but is not looking too far ahead in his rehab, according to team president Bruce Allen. Allen denied a recent report that stated the Redskins are preparing for Smith to miss the entire 2019 season.

Footballguys view: Until we hear otherwise, it is best to assume that Smith will not be playing next season. The Washington pass offense was still one of the most anemic in the league with him at the helm, so Washington's targets and offense won't lose much as long as the team can competently replace him, which is not a given.

Redskins | Alex Smith not in 2019 plans?    Sun Jan 27, 01:57 PM

Washington Redskins QB Alex Smith (leg) is tentatively not in the team's 2019 plans as the general feeling in the organization is that he'll miss the season with complications resulting from broken leg this past fall, sources said Sunday, Jan. 27.

Footballguys view: Smith's leg had a huge apparatus on it when he was recently seen in public, lending credence to this report. The team could attempt to move up in the draft for a long term answer, but should also pursue a free agent like Teddy Bridgewater to start Week 1.

Updating previous reports, Washington Redskins QB Alex Smith (leg) had surgery to repair a broken tibia and fibula Sunday, Nov. 19. He's out for the season.

Footballguys view: Smith faces a long road to recovery and his status for the beginning of the 2019 season is unknown at this time. Washington turns to Colt McCoy as their starter with Smith out. They'll have to make a move to add a quarterback as Smith and McCoy are the only QBs on the roster.

Redskins | Alex Smith injures ankle    Sun Nov 18, 03:02 PM

Washington Redskins QB Alex Smith (ankle) suffered an ankle injury during the Week 11 game and will not return.

Footballguys view: Smith leg injury is a fracture and serious. His season is over. Colt McCoy will start and he's a very competent backup. This pass offense was one of the weakest in the NFL with Smith, so the fantasy outlook here isn't changing. This team will rely on their defense and timely plays from Adrian Peterson behind a banged up offensive line.

Washington Redskins QB Alex Smith completed 21-of-36 passes for 163 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions in the Week 6 win against the Carolina Panthers.

Footballguys view: Smith did well in a conservative game plan and did a lot of his damage on throws to Vernon Davis and Paul Richardson. He's a low ceiling/high floor play going against Dallas next week.

Washington Redskins QB Alex Smith completed 33-of-46 passes for 292 yards, no touchdowns and no interceptions in the Week 2 loss against the Indianapolis Colts.

Footballguys view: Smith couldn't finish drives against one of the most underwhelming defensive rosters in the league on the day his replacement in Kansas City threw six touchdowns. He also has an injured stud left tackle. Smith's value is dropping, and the Washington offense is looking mortal after an effortlessly efficient performance in Week 1 at Arizona.

Redskins | Jamison Crowder making favorable impression    Sun Jun 24, 02:32 PM

Washington Redskins WR Jamison Crowder is healthy after a season in which he dealt with hamstring issues and is focusing on doing more of the dynamic lifts in college in order to avoid them this season. He has also 'clearly clicked' with Alex Smith this offseason, according to ESPN.com's John Keim.

Footballguys view: It's great news for Crowder, and we'll be watching to see if the chemistry with Smith carries over into training camp and the preseason. Crowder struggled through the hamstring problems in 2017, and he finished the year as a low-end WR3 for fantasy owners. This year, Crowder is poised for a breakout year from the slot as Josh Doctson and Paul Richardson should be attacking from the outside of the formation.

Washington Redskins QB Alex Smith and WR Jamison Crowder already appear to have good chemistry. According to NBCSportsWashington's Rich Tandler, Smith looked comfortable looking Crowder's way during goal-line plays at organized team activities Wednesday, June 6.

Footballguys view: Keep this in mind as training camp and the preseason approaches. Smith is the new quarterback in Washington, and it sounds like he's developing a strong rapport with Crowder. In current 12-team PPR league drafts, Crowder is going off the board at WR42 (9.06).

Redskins | Alex Smith contract terms    Sat May 26, 06:34 PM

Contract terms for Washington Redskins QB Alex Smith include a $27 million signing bonus and salaries of $13 million in 2018 and $15 million in 2019. Smith's $16 million in 2020 becomes fully guaranteed on the fifth day of the 2019 league year.

Footballguys view: Washington will have Smith take over this year as they let Kirk Cousins bolt in free agency. We'll see if the new weapons around him help Washington's win total in a tough NFC East. Last year, Smith finished as the no.4 fantasy quarterback in standard-scoring leagues. With his new team, fantasy owners are seeing him as a low-end QB2. Smith has a current ADP of QB21 (13.05) in 12-team PPR leagues.

Updating a previous report, Kansas City Chiefs QB Alex Smith was officially traded to the Washington Redskins Wednesday, March 14, in exchange for CB Kendall Fuller and a 2018 third-round draft choice.

Updating a previous report, Kansas City Chiefs QB Alex Smith was officially acquired by the Washington Redskins Wednesday, March 14, in exchange for CB Kendall Fuller and a 2018 third-round draft choice.

Footballguys view: Washington moves on from Kirk Cousins, and they get their man in Smith. He's coming off a career year with the Chiefs, and it will be interesting to see if his style of play continues to ascend now that he's got a fresh start with Washington.

Redskins | A Kirk Cousins tag and trade not realistic    Mon Feb 19, 04:30 PM

Washington Redskins impending free-agent QB Kirk Cousins could theoretically be franchise tagged by the Redskins, but if that were to occur then Cousins would not entertain a long-term deal with his new team and he would make a whopping $34 million under the tag. If Cousins did not immediately sign the tag, he could not be traded anyway. Furthermore, the Redskins would not be able to do much else in free agency and also just traded for Kansas City Chiefs QB Alex Smith.

Footballguys view: Washington wants to get something for Cousins before they lose him in free agency. Tagging him for a third time goes against the spirit of the rule, and there have been reports that Cousins would file a grievance if Washington went that route.

Redskins | Alex Smith subpar versus NFC East    Wed Jan 31, 03:40 PM

Kansas City Chiefs QB Alex Smith has played relatively poorly against the NFC East in his career. In 18 career games versus the division Smith has averaged a scanty 217.4 yards and 1.2 touchdowns. Smith will be playing six games in the NFC East.

Browns | Cleveland made push for Alex Smith    Tue Jan 30, 11:31 PM

Kansas City Chiefs QB Alex Smith, who was - in principle - traded to the Washington Redskins on Tuesday, Jan. 30, was reportedly also a target of the Cleveland Browns, according to a source.

Footballguys view: The Browns are going to be mentioned in connection with every top draft quarterback and every quarterback that could start on the free agent or trade market. They are still one of the least desirable destinations despite the copious amounts of money and playing time available for the team.

Redskins | Kendall Fuller headed to Kansas City    Tue Jan 30, 11:01 PM

The Washington Redskins have agreed in principle to trade CB Kendall Fuller along with a 2018 third-round pick to the Kansas City Chiefs in exchange for QB Alex Smith. Per NFL rules, the trade cannot be officially completed until the first day of the new league year (3 p.m. on March 14).

Footballguys view: Fuller was one of the better slot corners in the league and he still has two years left on a cheap rookie deal. He is the prize more than the third round pick, especially because the Chiefs struggled to cover slot receivers and needed to upgrade this position sorely.

Redskins | Washington reportedly extends Alex Smith    Tue Jan 30, 10:23 PM

Washington Redskins QB Alex Smith, who was reportedly traded from the Kansas City Chiefs late in the night Tuesday, Jan. 30, has agreed to a four-year, $94 million contract extension that will keep him with the Redskins though the end of the 2022 season. The deal will reportedly include approximately $70 million in guaranteed money. Per NFL rules, the trade cannot be officially completed until the first day of the new league year (3 p.m. on March 14).

Footballguys view: That's a huge amount of money for a 33-year-old quarterback, but that's the market now, and Washington probably thought Kirk Cousins would cost significantly more. Jimmy Garoppolo's deal should be equal to or exceed this contract.

Chiefs | Alex Smith reportedly dealt to Washington    Tue Jan 30, 09:56 PM

The Kansas City Chiefs reportedly reached an agreement to trade QB Alex Smith to the Washington Redskins on Tuesday, Jan. 30. While the compensation the Chiefs will receive has yet to be released and any trade involving Smith can't be completed until the first day of the new league year (3 p.m. on March 14), sources say the deal is in place and will proceed.

Footballguys view: Washington is clearly moving on from Kirk Cousins, and this trade might hurt any chance they would have to extract any value in a trade after tagging and signing Cousins, because they can't credibly keep him now. Denver and the Jets seem to be the leading candidates to land Cousins now. Smith should have some of the same strengths as Cousins, but could be more conservative without Travis Kelce and Tyreek Hill. Patrick Mahomes will take over in Kansas City and could unlock a lot of value in the Chiefs pass offense that Smith did not.

Chiefs | Alex Smith not close to retiring    Tue Jan 30, 06:56 PM

Kansas City Chiefs QB Alex Smith has played 13 seasons in the NFL but is not close to hanging up his cleats. 'I love what I do too much, I love the challenge of it, I still feel great, my body feels great,' Smith said.

Footballguys view: Smith played well in 2017 and certainly is among the 32 best quarterbacks in the league. He'll start somewhere in 2018, but likely not in Kansas City.

Chiefs | Alex Smith hopeful for return to KC    Tue Jan 30, 12:18 PM

Kansas City Chiefs QB Alex Smith told The Dan Patrick Show on Tuesday, Jan. 30, that his preference is to return to the team in 2018.

Footballguys view: Of course he does. Andy Reid's offense has been tailored to him, and Smith has strong talent around him and continuity. If he is traded, he could end up in Cleveland, Arizona, or the Jets in a rebuilding project, instead of the instant playoff team situation he was part of in Kansas City. Smith had a strong fantasy season with high peaks in 2017, but he'll likely be a pedestrian fantasy option elsewhere.

Browns | Alex Smith linked to Browns    Tue Jan 9, 09:18 AM

Kansas City Chiefs QB Alex Smith could be an option for the Cleveland Browns after the Browns hired general manager John Dorsey, in the opinion of The Cleveland Plain Dealer's Dan Labbe. Dorsey was the Chiefs' general manager when he acquired Smith from the San Francisco 49ers.

Footballguys view: The move would make a lot of sense for both sides. Smith is under contract for one more year with the Chiefs, but he could be traded away so Kansas City can begin the Patrick Mahomes era. The Browns have the no1 and no4 overall picks in the first round of the 2018 NFL draft. One of those picks should be used on a quarterback like Josh Rosen or Sam Darnold. If Smith was added, he could help groom a young passer like one of those incoming rookies.

Chiefs | Alex Smith throws two TDs in Wild Card loss    Sat Jan 6, 08:14 PM

Kansas City Chiefs QB Alex Smith went 24-for-33 for 264 yards and two touchdowns in a Wild Card loss to the Tennessee Titans.

Footballguys view: Only 33 of those passing yards came in the second half. Once TE Travis Kelce (concussion) was knocked out of the game, Smith couldn't do much through the air. On fourth down looking to get into field goal range, Smith took a deep shot to WR Albert Wilson that fell to the ground incomplete. That will likely go down as his final pass with the Chiefs. Reports indicate the Chiefs will be open to trading Smith away. When they trade Smith, that opens the door for 2017 first-round pick Patrick Mahomes to take over as starter.

Chiefs | KC open to trading Alex Smith?    Sat Jan 6, 12:12 PM

The Kansas City Chiefs will not actively seek out trade partners for QB Alex Smith this offseason, but they will listen, according to NFL.com's Ian Rapoport, who speculated the one thing that may cause 'all sides to pull back' is if the Chiefs make a run to the Super Bowl.

Footballguys view: The team moved up in the 2017 NFL draft to select QB Patrick Mahomes out of Texas Tech, and he's the team's QB of the future. Smith has one more year left on his contract with a $20.6 million cap hit for 2018. The Chiefs could clear up $17 million in cap space by getting Smith off the books. With so many QB desperate teams, the Chiefs could fetch a few draft picks for the veteran.

Chiefs | Alex Smith shatters small-ball tag    Wed Jan 3, 12:31 PM

Kansas City Chiefs QB Alex Smith led the league with 17 completions on passes thrown at least 30 yards downfield this season. By comparison, he had 16 such completions combined from 2013 to 2016.

Footballguys view: Smith obviously took some more deep shots this year. Overall, his air-yards-per-attempt average (7.34 yards) was still below the league average (7.96 yards). His mark ranked 24th-lowest for starting QBs this year, but this is a slight improvement over where Smith ranks historically in that category.

Kansas City Chiefs QB Alex Smith completed 25 of his 39 pass attempts for 304 yards, one touchdown and no interceptions in Week 16 against the Miami Dolphins and he also ran four times for 13 yards.

Footballguys view: Smith came through as a high floor in a matchup with a defense has had some ups and downs this year. He'll have another chance to answer questions about his ability to throw downfield and threaten defenses vertically in the playoffs.

Chiefs | Alex Smith throwing well on deep balls    Mon Dec 11, 05:43 PM

Kansas City Chiefs QB Alex Smith has thrown 11 touchdowns and zero interceptions on passes that are at least 20 yards past the line of scrimmage. He had thrown 12 touchdowns and eight interceptions on such passes in the previous six years combined.

Footballguys view: Smith has been more bold as a downfield passer in 2017. We'll see if he can put up numbers in a huge game against the Chargers in Week 15. Over the last month of the season, the Chargers have the 6th best pass defense by only allowing an average of 181.5 passing yards per game.

Kansas City Chiefs QB Alex Smith has averaged 238.2 yards and thrown just five touchdowns in five home games this season compared to 292.6 yards and 18 touchdowns in seven road games.

Footballguys view: The Chiefs lost to the Jets last week, but it wasn't due to Smith. He had 366 yards passing, four touchdowns and 70 yards rushing in Week 13. After buzz that rookie QB Patrick Mahomes could get to start, Smith squashed that with a monster game last Sunday. We'll see if he can continue his hot play but this time at home in a big game against the Raiders in Week 14.

Kansas City Chiefs QB Alex Smith went 19-for-33 for 366 yards and four touchdowns against the New York Jets in Week 13. He also rushed for 70 yards on one carry during the game.

Footballguys view: Most of Smith's production came on a few early throws to Travis Kelce and two deep balls to Tyreek Hill. He was probably on fantasy benches because of his recent disappointments, but Smith has rekindled hopes going into a good matchup against Oakland.

Kansas City Chiefs QB Alex Smith went 23-for-36 for 199 yards, one touchdown and one interception against the Buffalo Bills in Week 12. He also rushed for 35 yards on five carries during the game.

Footballguys view: Smith was a disappointment, either failing to execute or going for too much on makeable third downs. The Seahawks probably won't make a quarterback change this week, but it will be discussed when a team has lost five of six and saw how far Smith could get them last year. Smith has a good matchup against the Jets next week, but is impossible to trust in typical leagues.

Chiefs | Alex Smith throws two INTs    Sun Nov 19, 05:10 PM

Kansas City Chiefs QB Alex Smith went 27-for-40 for 230 yards and two interceptions against the New York Giants in Week 11. He also rushed for 27 yards on five carries during the game.

Footballguys view: Smith was a dud, in part because of high winds, but he also has himself to blame. The Giants defense was laughably bad in recent weeks, but kept Smith and the Chiefs out of the end zone. Kansas City is still comfortably in first place because of their division, but this is the kind of loss that can cause a team to question itself. Smith returns home for a good matchup with Buffalo next week, but he will be hard to trust as a QB1 after this performance.
