NFL | Alex Smith retires    Mon Apr 19, 12:08 PM

Free-agent QB Alex Smith (Football Team) announced his retirement Monday, April 19.

Footballguys view: Smith played 16 seasons in the NFL after being selected by the 49ers as the no.1 overall pick in the 2005 NFL draft. He was always a solid starter as he bounced around the NFL, and he did a fine job of mentoring Patrick Mahomes when he was a rookie back in 2017. Smith suffered a horrific leg injury with Washington and spent years getting back to the football field. He triumphantly returned in 2020 and started a few games. Instead of working with the Jaguars (and his former college coach Urban Meyer) as a backup, Smith chose to hang up his cleats.

Texans | Alex Smith a possibility    Fri Apr 2, 01:35 PM

Free agent QB Alex Smith (Washington) is a candidate to sign with the Houston Texans if it becomes clear that QB Deshaun Watson won't be available for the 2021 season -- due to a trade, holdout or otherwise, according to a NFL Network report Friday, April 2.

Footballguys view: The Texans already added Tyrod Taylor (free agent) and Ryan Finley (trade) this offseason. Smith could compete with Taylor if Watson is not with the team anymore. Once Watson's off-field issues are cleared up, we should see the Texans make moves to trade him away.

Football Team | Alex Smith officially released    Fri Mar 5, 12:13 PM

Washington Football Team QB Alex Smith had mutually agreed to part ways, and on Friday, March 5, it became official with Washington releasing Smith.

Footballguys view: The move has been expected for some time. Smith made a miraculous comeback after a leg injury that was one of the most severe in league history. He should have plenty of interest on the open market for teams in the need of a veteran who can give them experience and depth.

Bears | Chicago to pursue Alex Smith?    Tue Mar 2, 01:34 PM

Washington Football Team QB Alex Smith, who is expected to be released at some point before the start of free agency, may potentially receive some interest from the Chicago Bears, according to NFL Media's Ian Rapoport.

Footballguys view: The Bears are in the mix for Seahawks QB Russell Wilson, as they're on his list of four teams he'd like to be traded to. If they don't get Wilson, then adding a guy like Smith makes sense. Nick Foles is still under contract and Mitchell Trubisky is set to be an unrestricted free agent when the new league year begins in two weeks.

Football Team | Alex Smith moving on    Mon Mar 1, 11:29 AM

Washington Football Team QB Alex Smith will part ways with the team in the coming days.

Footballguys view: Zero surprise here. Smith made a miraculous comeback after a horrific leg injury threatened his career (and more). The seasoned veteran should get interest from teams in search of a mentor for a young quarterback.

Football Team | Alex Smith expected to continue career    Mon Feb 15, 02:34 PM

Washington Football Team QB Alex Smith wants to continue his playing career next season even if he is not with Washington, according to ESPN's Jeremy Fowler.

Footballguys view: Washington seems to be in the market for a quarterback. They have Kyle Allen and Taylor Heinicke, but they might want a better starting option. That may mean moving on from Smith. He is a candidate to be released because the team would save $13.6 million in salary cap space if he is let go.

Football Team | Alex Smith could return to WAS    Fri Feb 5, 11:34 AM

Washington Football Team QB Alex Smith could return as the starter in 2021, according to head coach Ron Rivera. Washington believes the trio of Smith, Kyle Allen and Taylor Heinicke can deliver nine or 10 wins with upgrades elsewhere on offense and if the defense continues to progress.

Footballguys view: Rivera said that all options are on the table. Smith made a miraculous comeback in the 2020 season and looked solid as a starter. He's signed through the 2022 season and has a cap hit in 2021 of $24.4 million with $10.8 million remaining in dead money.

Football Team | Alex Smith uncertain about future    Sun Jan 10, 01:38 PM

Washington Football Team QB Alex Smith said he will take a few weeks to decide if he wants to play next season.

Footballguys view: Smith was able to fight back from one of the most horrific leg injuries in league history. He ended up playing in eight games in 2020, passing for 1,582 yards, six touchdowns and eight interceptions. Smith proved he could still be a starter in this league and has all the respect in the world for the way he had to battle back from an injury most others would have not. We'll see if he wants to play next season, likely as a backup. He's signed through the 2022 season, and would need to restructure if he stays with Washington.

Football Team | Washington may play two QBs vs. Tampa Bay    Tue Jan 5, 02:08 PM

Washington Football Team QBs Alex Smith and Taylor Heinicke could rotate in some form or fashion in the NFC Wild Card game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers this weekend, according to head coach Ron Rivera.

Footballguys view: Heinicke was thrust into action in Week 16 and looked good in relief of Dwayne Haskins. Smith started and played in Week 17 going for two touchdowns and two interceptions. Going with two quarterbacks would be an interesting strategy, especially against a ferocious front seven like the Buccaneers have.

We'll see if he can practice late in the week so he can get out there.

Washington Football Team QB Alex Smith completed 38-of-55 passes for 390 yards, no touchdowns and no interceptions in Week 10 against the Detroit Lions in his first start since that devastating leg injury in 2018.

Footballguys view: Smith missed JD McKissic on what could have been a touchdown early and the running backs finished the other three touchdowns drives, so all of Smith's yards resulted in no touchdowns and a merely adequate fantasy afternoon. He should be worth a look in 2QB/Superflex leagues against the Bengals next week.
