Bills | Looking at Alfonso Smith    Tue Oct 6, 12:27 PM

Free-agent RB Alfonso Smith (49ers) worked out for the Buffalo Bills Tuesday, Oct. 6, according to multiple reports.

Footballguys view: The Bills are looking for running back help with both LeSean McCoy (hamstring) and Karlos Williams (concussion) banged up. We could see Anthony Dixon get the start this week against the Titans.

Updating a previous report, San Francisco 49ers RB Alfonso Smith signed a one-year deal. The financial terms were not disclosed.

49ers | One signed, one cut    Tue Jul 29, 10:37 AM

The San Francisco 49ers signed free-agent RB Alfonso Smith (Cardinals) to an undisclosed deal and waived/injured OT Fou Fonoti (undisclosed).

Footballguys view: Smith is a decent all-purpose back, but he's essentially a camp body for the team. With LaMichael James (wrist) banged up, and Kendall Hunter (knee) out for the year, the 49ers needed to add depth at the position. These injuries are opening up an opportunity for guys like Carlos Hyde and Jewel Hampton (and Marcus Lattimore if healthy) behind Frank Gore.

Cardinals | No offer to LaRod Stephens-Howling    Wed Dec 26, 07:39 PM

Arizona Cardinals RB LaRod Stephens-Howling has not received a contract offer from the team. He'll be an unrestricted free agent in March. Arizona wants to bring him back, but it looks as though he'll be able to at least test the market. The team still has RBs William Powell and Alfonso Smith.

Footballguys view: Stephens-Howling is a nice change of pace back who can produce if given a bigger role. Filling in as a starter earlier this year he had 104 yards rushing against the Vikings in week 7 and 127 yards rushing against the Falcons in week 11.

The Arizona Cardinals have declared RB Alfonso Smith, WR Andre Roberts, DL Calais Campbell, QB Kevin Kolb, OT Pat McQuistan, OT Senio Kelemete, TE Todd Heap inactive for Week 13.

Footballguys view: Roberts being out takes away one of rookie QB Ryan Lindley's favorite targets in the passing game. Rob Housler becomes a better desperation TE play in his absence.

Cardinals | Alfonso Smith re-signs    Wed Sep 26, 04:57 PM

The Arizona Cardinals re-signed RB Alfonso Smith Wednesday, Sept. 26.

Cardinals | Trim roster to 53    Fri Aug 31, 08:25 PM

The Arizona Cardinals trimmed their roster to 53 players Friday, Aug. 31. The team released CB Crezdon Butler, LB Antonio Coleman, S Blake Gideon, LB Clark Haggans, OG Russ Hochstein, DT Ricky Lumpkin, LB Colin Parker, CB Larry Parker, WR DeMarco Sampson, TE Steve Skelton, RB Alfonso Smith, LB Quan Sturdivant, DE Ron Talley, DE Everrette Thompson, TE Martell Webb, C Scott Wedige, WR Isaiah Williams and OT D.J. Young.

Footballguys view: William Powell had an outstanding preseason and made Smith expendable. He's a name to remember if Ryan Williams and Beanie Wells can't stay healthy this year.

Cardinals | Alfonso Smith on the bubble     Thu Aug 23, 10:48 AM

Arizona Cardinals RB Alfonso Smith is in jeopardy of being released in favor of RB William Powell, who has made several plays in the preseason.

Footballguys view: Powell has looked better than Smith this preseason. We like his balance, strong lower body, and determination as a runner. He could make the team as the fourth RB behind Beanie Wells, Ryan Williams, and LaRod Stephens-Howling.

Cardinals | Alfonso Smith makes most of opportunity    Sun Aug 5, 11:44 PM

With Arizona Cardinals RBs Beanie Wells (knee) and Ryan Williams (knee) sidelined for the Hall of Fame preseason game Sunday, Aug. 5, against the New Orleans Saints, RB Alfonso Smith took advantage of the extra work. He impressed with eight carries for 46 yards and a rushing touchdown. Smith is in the mix for the No. 3 tailback job. His competition for the job, RB LaRod Stephens-Howling, posted 25 rushing yards on four carries. William Powell had 10 carries, but he managed just 31 yards. He also had three grabs for 26 yards.

Footballguys view: Smith looked good changing direction and had good burst after his cuts. He could stick on the roster as the fourth RB behind Wells, Williams, and Stephens-Howling.

Cardinals | Trio of RBs to likely get long look    Sat Jul 21, 10:22 PM

With Arizona Cardinals RBs Beanie Wells (knee) and Ryan Williams (knee) likely to see limited touches during the preseason, RBs Javarris James, LaRod Stephens-Howling and Alfonso Smith are likely to see an extended look during training camp and the preseason. James is considered a long shot to make the team, while Stephens-Howling and Smith will both have a role with the team.

Footballguys view: 'Baby J' James is the younger cousin of former Colts (and Cardinals) RB Edgerrin James. He's a no-nonsense runner but is not creative or elusive in the open field. Stephens-Howling reminds some of Saints RB Darren Sproles, while Smith is a valuable back because of his versatility as a runner, receiver, and special teams player.

Cardinals | Alfonso Smith leader for final RB job    Mon Jul 2, 01:44 PM

Arizona Cardinals RB Alfonso Smith is considered the favorite for the final running back roster spot if the team decides to keep five backs on their roster. Smith likely has an edge because he has value as a special team player.

Footballguys view: Smith is a versatile player who can contribute as a runner, receiver, or on special teams. We like him to win the competition over guys like Javarris James or William Powell.

Arizona Cardinals exclusive rights free-agent RB Alfonso Smith has signed his one-year tender and will make $540,000 this season.

Cardinals | Beanie Wells not at full strength    Wed Nov 2, 07:28 PM

Arizona Cardinals RB Beanie Wells (knee) will miss practice time for the rest of the season, and he admitted that he isn't as explosive as he was before the injury. RBs LaRod Stephens-Howling, Alfonso Smith and Chester Taylor will likely be used more as a result.

Footballguys view: Wells looked like he couldn't quite get to the corner or accelerate to full speed, but he was still more than adequate last week, so he's probably a hold even though he hasn't played well through injuries in the past.

Cardinals | Beanie Wells not practicing    Wed Oct 26, 06:48 PM

Arizona Cardinals RB Beanie Wells (knee) did not practice Wednesday, Oct. 26, casting more doubt on his availability for Week 8 against the Baltimore Ravens.

Footballguys view: The Cardinals will use Alfonso Smith as their starter if Wells is unable to play. We'll also see more from veteran Chester Taylor in a RBBC. It's a tough matchup against the Ravens on Sunday, so we're not expecting a lot from the Cards ground game.

Cardinals | Alfonso Smith expected to start Week 8    Mon Oct 24, 02:45 PM

Arizona Cardinals RB Alfonso Smith is expected to start in Week 8 if RB Beanie Wells (knee) is not able to play. Head coach Ken Whisenhunt said RBs Chester Taylor and LaRod Stephens-Howling would also see time with the team using a little bit of a running back-by-committee approach.

Footballguys view: Smith is a no-nonsense type of runner and not an exciting fantasy option because of his lack of elite skills and the Cardinals struggling offense.

Cardinals | Alfonso Smith finds end zone    Sun Oct 23, 09:20 PM

Arizona Cardinals RB Alfonso Smith had five carries for 17 yards and a touchdown in Week 7 against the Pittsburgh Steelers. He and RB LaRod Stephens-Howling some more playing time with RB Beanie Wells (knee) leaving due to injury. Stephens-Howling didn't have any carries, but he had two catches for 76 yads, including a 73-yard touchdown.

Footballguys view: Smith is a bottom of the barrel waiver wire pickup with the Ravens up next. He will get touches while Beanie Wells is out, but Smith doesn't seem to have the talent or the surrounding offense to make much noise with them.

Cardinals | Still evaluating Chester Taylor    Thu Sep 29, 01:08 AM

Arizona Cardinals RB Chester Taylor got the start in Week 3 against the Seattle Seahawks, but he was replaced by Alfonso Smith after eight carries, and Smith played the balance of the game. 'It's a tough situation, to come in and have to play when you haven't been with the team very long,' Whisenhunt said of Taylor. The team signed Taylor during the week of the regular season opener.

Footballguys view: We're not still evaluating Chester Taylor. He's not worth owning in any league, any format.

Arizona Cardinals RB Alfonso Smith got 17 carries for 54 yards in Week 3 against the Seattle Seahawks, and he added three catches for 21 yards. Smith was seeing action with RB Beanie Wells (hamstring) inactive.

Footballguys view: Smith is still barely worth an add except as a Beanie Wells injury handcuff in deep leagues.
