Falcons | Matt Simms back with Falcons    Mon May 15, 04:46 PM

Atlanta Falcons QB Matt Simms was re-signed Monday, May 15. WR Garrett Scantling was waived in a corresponding move.

Footballguys view: Simms will compete as a camp arm with the Falcons once again. They've got Matt Ryan as the starter, Matt Schaub as the veteran backup and rookie Alek Togerson (Penn) as a developmental prospect.

Free-agent QB Matt Simms (Falcons), OT Khalif Barnes (Saints), TE Clay Harbor (Lions) and OT Bryce Harris (Dolphins) are participating in the New Orleans Saints rookie minicamp this weekend on a tryout basis.

Footballguys view: Harbor would be the only player of interest here...if he gets to stay as more than a tryout player. Anybody catching passes from QB Drew Brees will always get out attention.

Free-agent QB Matt Simms (Falcons), WR J.D. McKissic (Falcons) and TE D.J. Tialavea (Falcons) were signed to the Atlanta Falcons practice squad Sunday, Sept. 4.

Falcons | Atlanta cuts two offensive players    Sat Sep 3, 01:49 PM

The Atlanta Falcons have released WR J.D. McKissic and QB Matt Simms.

Footballguys view: We might see Simms make a practice squad somewhere in the NFL, perhaps even with Atlanta. They got rid of Sean Renfree last week and only have two QBs (Matt Ryan, Matt Schaub) on the roster.

Free-agent QB Matt Simms (Bills) and TE Marcel Jensen (Broncos) were signed to the Atlanta Falcons' practice squad Monday, Sept. 7.

Bills | Matt Simms might still make roster    Wed Sep 2, 10:35 PM

Buffalo Bills QB Matt Simms is not believed to be in line to make the 53-man roster, and 'the odds are stacked against' him according to head coach Rex Ryan. However, if the team elects to cut QBs Matt Cassel or EJ Manuel, that could change things dramatically.

Footballguys view: We can't imagine Simms making the final roster, but a spot on the practice squad might be available for him.

NFL | Michael Vick work ethic questioned?    Mon Jun 15, 08:05 AM

Free-agent QB Michael Vick (Jets) has not drawn a lot of interest from teams mainly because of his work ethic with the New York Jets. Indications are Vick barely looked at the Jets playbook and yielded many of his reps to QB Matt Simms in practice.

Footballguys view: Shocking, we know. Sarcasm aside, it was clear that Vick had checked out last season. It's no surprise that he's getting no interest on the open market in this quarterback desperate league. Vick's playing days might be done.

Bills | Matt Simms claimed    Fri May 29, 05:34 PM

New York Jets QB Matt Simms was claimed off waivers by the Buffalo Bills Friday, May 29. The Bills also waived QB Jeff Tuel.

Footballguys view: We don't see Simms as anything more than a camp arm for the Bills. As a former Jets player, Simms has ties to Rex Ryan and he knows what the coach wants from a quarterback.

Jets | Matt Simms released    Thu May 28, 05:04 PM

New York Jets QB Matt Simms was released Thursday, May 28.

Footballguys view: No shocker here, despite what his dad said about him not getting a chance. Simms is a good teammate by all accounts and could end up as a decent backup, but he's no longer an option for the Jets. He might land somewhere as a backup.

Jets | Geno Smith to serve as backup    Fri Nov 7, 04:50 PM

New York Jets QB Geno Smith (shoulder) has improved enough that he'll serve as the backup to QB Michael Vick in Week 10 against the Pittsburgh Steelers.   Jets | One promoted, one cut    Sat Nov 1, 06:42 PM

The New York Jets waived WR Chris Owusu and promoted QB Matt Simms to the 53-man roster Saturday, Nov. 1.

Footballguys view: Simms might get a look sometime the rest of the season, but this is also in part because Geno Smith's shoulder has been bothering him. Still, would anyone be shocked if Simms got a shot? Vick is a patch at most and it appears Geno Smith is not the answer at quarterback. If the Jets could get someone competent under center, Eric Decker and Percy Harvin would have a lot more value.

Jets | Make two roster moves    Sat Nov 1, 01:53 PM

The New York Jets signed QB Matt Simms to the active roster from the practice squad and released WR Chris Owusu Saturday, Nov. 1.

Footballguys view: This could be a sign that the team is going to take a look at Simms as a starter. They are pretty sure Geno Smith isn't their guy and at best Mike Vick is a placeholder. None of this is going to help you at quarterback but if they can find someone at least halfway competent, it will help Eric Decker and Percy Harvin.

Jets | Geno Smith's availability in question    Tue Oct 28, 05:06 PM

New York Jets QB Geno Smith's (shoulder) availability for Week 9 against the Kansas City Chiefs is in question, and he's experiencing 'minor soreness.' However, head coach Rex Ryan downplayed the severity of Smith's injury, and said the team hopes he can resume throwing by Wednesday, Oct. 29. QB Matt Simms will be ready just in case.

Footballguys view: Even if Smith was 1000 percent healthy, the team is moving forward with Michael Vick as the starter. This injury is only a footnote. Smith has struggled as a starter, and the team is going nowhere with him under center.

Jets | Sign seven to practice squad    Sun Aug 31, 07:18 PM

The New York Jets signed free-agents DT Tevita Finau, DL Kerry Hyder, SS Rontez Miles, TE Chris Pantale, OT Brent Qvale, RB Daryl Richardson and QB Matt Simms to the team's practice squad Sunday, Aug. 31. All seven players spent training camp with the team.

Footballguys view: Pantele and Richardson are players worth monitoring in super deep dynasty leagues. Richardson has the speed to break off big plays regularly, and he's tough to line up in the open field. Pantale has good hands and can work underneath routes.

Jets | Tajh Boyd to play in preseason game    Thu Aug 14, 03:56 PM

New York Jets QB Tajh Boyd will play in the second preseason game, according to head coach Rex Ryan. Ryan did not say if QB Matt Simms will receive any playing time.

Footballguys view: We're interested in seeing if Boyd can start playing up to his potential. Rewind two years ago, and there were some touting Boyd as a potential first-round pick. He fell to the sixth round of the 2014 NFL draft because of concerns over his consistency as a passer. He's athletic and has a strong arm, but Boyd needs to make better decisions when throwing the football.

Jets | Tajh Boyd, Matt Simms to compete for No. 3 QB job    Wed Jul 2, 02:49 PM

New York Jets QBs Tajh Boyd and Matt Simms will compete for the No. 3 quarterback job during training camp.

Footballguys view: Boyd is much more naturally gifted than Simms, and we believe he'll win the QB3 job with the Jets. He's an interesting developmental quarterback to keep an eye on in dynasty leagues.

Jets | Geno Smith believes there is a competition    Wed Jun 4, 04:05 PM

New York Jets QB Geno Smith said he believes in competition, and will compete every day. 'I'm looking forward to working with Mike,' Smith said. 'When I was with Mark Sanchez, we did a good job of doing the same thing we competed hard. That's what we do around here. We're going to compete on a daily basis, all of us, Matt Simms, Taj Boyd, every guy on this team is competing. It's a good sign for this team because it makes us get better day to day.'

Footballguys view: Smith is going to get every chance to prove himself as the starter. We think Michael Vick will make a bigger push for the starting job than some think. Vick has a stronger arm and even though he's not the same player he used to be, Vick is still a more dangerous athlete as a runner. We'll see if Smith can hold off Vick in training camp.

Jets | Tajh Boyd to battle for No. 3 job    Sat May 10, 07:37 PM

The New York Jets selected Clemson QB Tajh Boyd with the No. 213 overall pick in the sixth round of the NFL Draft Saturday, May 10. He is not a threat to displace QBs Geno Smith or Michael Vick, but he will battle QB Matt Simms for the No. 3 job during training camp and the preseason.

Jets | Matt Simms may compete for spot    Fri Mar 21, 08:35 PM

The New York Jets may select a quarterback in the later rounds of the 2014 NFL Draft that would compete with QB Matt Simms for the No. 3 quarterback job.

Footballguys view: That would be a good idea. With two athletic quarterbacks like Michael Vick and Geno Smith, adding a guy like Logan Thomas (Virginia Tech) or Tajh Boyd (Clemson) on the third day of the draft makes sense.

Jets | Matt Simms re-signs    Tue Jan 14, 09:23 AM

The New York Jets re-signed QB Matt Simms to a one-year deal. He's set to make $495,000 in 2014.

Jets | Not naming starter for Week 14    Mon Dec 2, 12:36 PM

New York Jets head coach Rex Ryan is not naming a starting quarterback between QBs Geno Smith and Matt Simms for Week 14. 'It's safe to say that we'll put the guys in who we think give us the best chance to be successful,' Ryan said. 'That's the way it is and will be moving forward.' Smith had just 29 first-half passing yards and an interception in Week 13 against the Miami Dolphins before being benched in favor of Simms. Simms threw for 50 yards and an interception in the second half.

Footballguys view: Some think David Garrard could be the starter for the Jets. Either way, the Geno Smith era (and perhaps the Rex Ryan era) could be over in the near future.

Jets | Geno Smith benched    Sun Dec 1, 05:43 PM

New York Jets head coach Rex Ryan benched QB Geno Smith after the first half of the Week 13 game against the Miami Dolphins. Smith completed just four of his 10 passes for 29 yards, no touchdowns and one interception. QB Matt Simms replaced him, completing nine of his 18 pass attempts for 79 yards, no touchdowns and a pick.

Footballguys view: The Geno Smith era is on thin ice, and the Rex Ryan era is not much more stable. The Jets have won five games this year, but they seem like a much worse team than that lately.

Jets | Uncertain if Matt Simms will see reps    Mon Nov 25, 08:28 PM

New York Jets head coach Rex Ryan would not answer when asked if QB Matt Simms would get first-team reps in practice this week.

Jets | Matt Simms could see more practice time with starters    Mon Nov 18, 04:59 PM

New York Jets head coach Rex Ryan said QB Matt Simms could receive more snaps with the first-team offense during practice.

Footballguys view: The team needs to ride through the rough patches with Geno Smith. Making a move to Simms doesn't answer any questions about their quarterback position.

Jets | Sticking with Geno Smith    Mon Nov 18, 04:41 PM

New York Jets head coach Rex Ryan said the team will stick with QB Geno Smith as the starter in Week 12 against the Baltimore Ravens. 'Without question, Geno's going to start this game,' Ryan said. However, Ryan said he could give QB Matt Simms more first-team repetitions in practice this week.

Footballguys view: It's the smart move for the Jets. Smith is a rookie and is struggling like most rookie quarterbacks have done through NFL history. Making the switch to Matt Simms gains nothing and could potentially crush the confidence of Smith.

Jets | Matt Simms will be No. 2 QB    Mon Oct 21, 06:33 PM

New York Jets head coach Rex Ryan said QB Matt Simms will continue be the team's No. 2 quarterback and that the team does not expect QB David Garrard to play.

Footballguys view: Garrard is just veteran insurance. Smith is locked in as the starter, and we won't see Simms unless there's an injury.

Jets | Geno Smith won't be benched    Mon Sep 30, 03:01 PM

New York Jets head coach Rex Ryan said he will stick with QB Geno Smith despite his rough start against the Tennessee Titans in Week 4. However, Ryan hinted that Smith needs to improve after turning the ball over a season-high four times against the Titans. Smith is tied for the league lead with 11 turnovers through four games. 'You can't buy experience, but with that being said, we still have to do a much better job -- Geno, in particular -- of protecting the football at all costs,' Ryan said, 'You can't be nonchalant about it, you have to protect the ball.' QBs Matt Simms and Brady Quinn are the other options, and Simms has zero NFL experience.

Footballguys view: The Jets know there will be growing pains with the rookie. His ball security needs to improve in order for the Jets to get on the right track. However, we like the way Smith has been working through his mistakes and staying confident as a passer.

Jets | Matt Simms not a threat to Geno Smith    Thu Sep 19, 05:57 PM

New York Jets head coach Rex Ryan said that QB Matt Simms isn't a threat to steal QB Geno Smith's starting job. 'Well, I think there are a lot of guys that like Simms, I don't think there's any doubt, but to say as our starting quarterback? I don't see that,' Ryan said. 'Again, I'm obviously saying that that couldn't happen, but we see Geno as our starting quarterback now, and that's how we see it. We like Matt -- or Phil, if you want.' The Jets are happy with Smith's play, other than some miscues, and have acknowledged that he will go through his bumps and bruises as part of the learning experience.

Footballguys view: He shouldn't be a threat to Smith whatsoever. Smith has been up and down this season but looks good for a rookie QB still trying to make his way in the pros.
