Broncos | Simms likely to start in Week 11 Thu Nov 19, 04:51 PM
The Associated Press reports Denver Broncos QB Chris Simms is likely to start in Week 11 against the San Diego Chargers after taking snaps with the first team again Thursday, Nov. 19.
| Our view: It would be Simms first start since 2006, but the Broncos could be in trouble against the Chargers. The team may lean more on the ground game to help keep things simple for Simms if he does get the start. |

Broncos | Game plan will not change if Simms starts Thu Nov 19, 12:33 PM
Frank Schwab, of the Colorado Springs Gazette, reports Denver Broncos head coach Josh McDaniels said the game plan in Week 11 will not change if QB Chris Simms has to start in place of QB Kyle Orton (ankle).
| Our view: The Broncos passing game will not be the same without Kyle Orton. Yes, Simms is getting more reps in practice this week, but he played terrible with the lead against the Redskins. If Orton can't play, and Simms struggles again, we could see rookie Tom Brandstater inserted into the lineup. |

Broncos | Simms takes first-team snaps Wednesday Wed Nov 18, 11:38 PM
The Associated Press reports Denver Broncos QB Chris Simms practiced with the first-team offense in practice Wednesday, Nov. 18.
| Our view: The coaching staff is still reportedly planning on starting Orton. This probably won't end well for Broncos fans. |

Broncos | Orton throws two TD passes Week 10 Sun Nov 15, 05:34 PM
The Associated Press reports Denver Broncos QB Kyle Orton (ankle) was 11-for-18 for 193 yards with two touchdown passes Week 10 against the Washington Redskins. Orton limped to the locker room after suffering an ankle injury and was replaced by QB Chris Simms, who went 3-for-13 for 13 yards and an interception in the game.
| Our view: Orton struggled tremendously after an ankle injury last season, so this injury could be significant even if Orton is able to return next week. The play of Simms wasn't at all reassuring for the fantasy prospects of Brandon Marshall or Eddie Royal. |

Broncos | Orton leaves game because of ankle injury Sun Nov 15, 03:17 PM
The Associated Press reports Denver Broncos QB Kyle Orton (ankle) was not starting after halftime because of an ankle injury. Orton came up hobbling on a scramble right before halftime. When he returned to the sidelines in the second half, his left ankle was heavily taped. The Broncos say his return is doubtful. QB Chris Simms has replaced Orton.

Broncos | Orton, Simms to practice this week Tue Sep 8, 02:22 PM
CBSSports.com reports Denver Broncos QBs Kyle Orton (finger) and Chris Simms (ankle) will practice this week. Orton is scheduled to start in Week 1 if he is healthy enough to play.
| Our view: There are some Broncos fans that believe rookie Tom Brandstater should be the starting quarterback, but the reality is that Kyle Orton is going to be the starter all season if he can stay healthy. Chris Simms provides the Broncos with quality depth at the position, but he hasn't outplayed Orton during his time with the team. |

Broncos | Team expects Orton, Simms to be ready for week one Tue Sep 1, 07:18 PM
Profootballtalk.com reports that the Broncos believe both Chris Simms and Kyle Orton will be ready for the season opener Sunday, September 13 against Cincinnati.
| Our view: Ready to play, and ready to play well are two different things. We like the Bengals to open the season 1-0 against the beleaguered Broncos. |

Broncos | Simms could miss up to a month Thu Aug 27, 12:20 AM
Adam Schefter, of ESPN.com, reports Denver Broncos QB Chris Simms (ankle) sustained a high-ankle sprain, according to a team source, and could be out of action anywhere from two to four weeks.
| Our view: We wonder if the Broncos regret passing up Matt Gutierrez when the Patriots released him after signing Andrew Walter. High ankle sprains have a tendency to linger, and the Broncos can't feel comfortable with rookie Tom Brandstater as the main backup to Kyle Orton. Speaking of Orton, regardless of how he plays there is no QB controversy in Denver, and the injury to Simms only solidifies that. |

Broncos | Orton firmly entrenched as the starter Thu Aug 20, 10:57 PM
The Denver Post reports Kyle Orton remains firmly entrenched as the team's starter. Orton took all of the work with the starting offense all week, and consistently played better than backup Chris Simms. Coach Josh McDaniels today made a point to say that Orton did not have an overall bad game against San Francisco, when Orton threw three interceptions, just a few "bad decisions." "(Orton) got better every day, he had a heck of a practice (Wednesday) and continues to get better every day," McDaniels said. "That's just the way Kyle is, and Chris is the same way. Neither one of them is where I want them to be ultimately, and it doesn't happen in two weeks. It's going to happen over time."
| Our view: Broncos fans may not want to hear this, but if Orton plays well in the rest of the preseason then there will be no QB controversy in Denver. Chris Simms looked much better in the game against the 49ers, but he hasn't really outplayed Orton at practice. Simms throws with a ton of velocity, but struggles when throwing touch passes. Orton throws a very catchable pass, but doesn't have the arm strength to stretch the field and challenge a defense deep. |

Broncos | No QB controversy Sun Aug 16, 08:39 PM
The Denver Post reports new Broncos head coach Josh McDaniels spoke calmly about the deep contrast in his quarterbacks' performances Friday until he received his third consecutive question about it. At that point of redundancy, McDaniels became slightly more emphatic in his defense of Orton. "I feel very confident in where we're at, OK?" McDaniels said. "Like I said, he made a few mistakes. But we're not going to go into this thing after the first preseason game and start tailspinning and doing this and that and making knee-jerk reactions."
| Our view: The offense in Denver has a lot of moving parts, and nobody was expecting Kyle Orton to look like Tom Brady (or Matt Cassel) from day one. However, he was outplayed by Chris Simms and if he doesn't start playing better we could see a full-blown QB controversy in Denver. The third week of the preseason the Broncos play the Bears at Invesco Field, and Orton will really hear the boo birds if he doesn't outplay Jay Cutler in that game. |

Broncos | McDaniels says Simms still has chance to start Thu Aug 13, 03:33 PM
Daniel Williams, of The Denver Daily News, reports Denver Broncos head coach Josh McDaniels said QB Chris Simms still has a chance to win the starting job.
| Our view: This article is based on a McDaniels quote from late July that is more coachspeak than anything else. We're still convinced Orton will start week 1 as long as he doesn't have a Leinart-esque blowup in the preseason. |

Broncos | McDaniels not worried about Orton's performance Sat Aug 8, 01:21 PM
Frank Schwab, from the Colorado Springs Gazette, reports Josh McDaniels tried to calm the masses that booed quarterback Kyle Orton during Thursday night's scrimmage at Invesco Field at Mile High, in which he threw a pair of interceptions and misfired on many other passes. "Kyle did fine," McDaniels said Friday, after reviewing the video. "There's a couple plays, obviously, we could have had back. But he made no more mistakes, certainly, than anybody else did."
| Our view: There is no quarterback controversy in Denver - yet. Orton has been inconsistent in training camp so far. One day he'll look very good, the next day he'll look lost. However, Chris Simms hasn't been performing markedly better than Orton up to this point. Orton was a key component to the Jay Cutler trade and will be given every opportunity to hang on to the starting job. The preseason games will help determine Orton's fate, and the all important third preseason game is in Denver against the Bears and Jay Cutler. |

Broncos | Boo-birds come out at Invesco Fri Aug 7, 07:14 PM
Arnie Stapleton, from the Associated Press, reports Kyle Orton drew the fans' ire when he was picked off twice by cornerback Andre' Goodman, the second of which was returned for a long touchdown. "I had a good day," Goodman said in a lonely sentiment afterward. Orton also was jeered when he threw behind receiver Chad Jackson, again when he missed a wide-open Jabar Gaffney in the end zone and also when he floated a pass down the middle that Champ Bailey busted up. "Fans can cheer. They can boo," Orton said. "We've got good fans, and they're passionate about their football, that's for sure."
| Our view: Kyle Orton has been up and down in practice out at Dove Valley, and when the Broncos moved their practice to Invesco field (which was open free to the public) he had one of his worst performances in training camp. His timing seemed to be off, and when he was in sync he floated passes instead of zipping them in. Orton's arm is not as strong as Chris Simms, but he usually makes better decision with the football. There is no QB controversy in Denver currently, but if Orton plays poorly in the preseason we could see Simms take over. |

Broncos | McDaniels: QBs are quick learners Wed Jul 29, 07:43 PM
Mike Chambers, of the Denver Post, reports that Broncos head coach Josh McDaniels is impressed with "information flow" and "recall" of QBs Kyle Orton and Chris Simms. McDaniels said, "There is nothing we're saying to them in the meeting room or on the field that's foreign to them. That's comforting, but it still means they have to go out and execute when there's a defense and a different look, disguising, and (running) everything and at full speed."
| Our view: That's the first step in a beautiful marriage between player and system. If Orton can really take to the McDaniels offense, there's no reason he can't be a top 15 fantasy QB this year. He showed the skills last year at Chicago pre-ankle injury. We'll have our own Cecil Lammey at Dove Valley to report on the progress of Orton and Simms. |

Broncos | McDaniels leaves open possibility of Simms starting Mon Jul 27, 09:23 PM
Frank Schwab, of the Colorado Springs Gazette reports that Broncos head coach Josh McDaniels said, ""We're going to evaluate the quarterbacks just like we do like every other position. If Chris is the most effective quarterback in our system by September, then he'll start." McDaniels also said he was impressed with Simms attitude and work in the QB drills today.
| Our view: Schwab stresses that "most of the quote should be attributed to coachspeak" and that "there's a reason (McDaniels) named Orton the starter more than a month ago", but it is still an interesting quote. Simms has ideal NFL QB size and arm strength, and if he doesn't look better than Orton in some facets of the game, then something is wrong. |

Broncos | Quarterback job still Orton's to lose? Tue Jun 2, 01:57 PM
John Clayton, of ESPN.com, reports he does not buy the idea that Denver Broncos QB Chris Simms is making a serious run for the team's starting quarterback job.
| Our view: The job likely remains QB Kyle Orton's to lose. If Orton loses his job to the left-handed Simms, the move would devalue the 2008 growth of the offensive line. OT Ryan Clady established himself as one of the league's best young left tackles last season. If Simms wins the job, Clady would either have to switch positions to protect Simms' blindside or be a less valuable blocker at left tackle. |

Broncos | Starting quarterback won't be named soon Sat May 30, 07:59 AM
Jim Armstrong, of The Denver Post, reports although Denver Broncos QB Chris Simms has been working extensively with the first-team offense during the team's passing camp, both he and QB Kyle Orton figure to get long looks into the preseason before any decision is made about the starter.
| Our view: 'Same thing,' McDaniels said when asked if there were any new developments at the position. 'Both of them will take reps with the 1s, and we're going to keep doing that until it becomes clear and apparent, and it's not yet. They're both doing some good things, and they're both making some mistakes.' Chris Simms has been looking good and has the better arm. Kyle Orton ran a similar system when he was in college at Purdue, and has more experience than Simms. This is a battle that could last a couple of weeks into training camp. |
