Raiders | Kory Sheets out for the year    Sat Aug 23, 09:37 AM

Oakland Raiders RB Kory Sheets (Achilles') tweeted that he is out for the 2014 season after suffering an Achilles' injury Friday, Aug. 22.

Footballguys view: Bad news for the veteran back. Sheets had been in the Canadian Football League but got one more chance to make it in the NFL with the Raiders this year. He was looking good in camp, and still has a dangerous stiff arm when toting the rock. Now, Sheets may never get back to the NFL again.

Raiders | Latavius Murray set to be No. 3 RB    Fri Jun 20, 03:36 PM

Oakland Raiders RB Latavius Murray seems to be the team's No. 3 running back at this point in the offseason behind RBs Darren McFadden and Maurice Jones-Drew. RB Kory Sheets has also been playing well, though. "We're looking for big things from Latavius Murray right now, coming off the foot injury. He's shown, to me, the biggest upside right now in what we've seen thus far, if he can stay healthy,' offensive coordinator Greg Olson said.

Footballguys view: We like Murray's upside as a runner and receiver out of the backfield. However, when the team kept Darren McFadden around then added Maurice Jones-Drew in free agency, it pushed Murray down the depth chart. He has to stay healthy and be patient for his opportunity with the Raiders.

Raiders | Kory Sheets signed    Wed Feb 12, 04:56 PM

The Oakland Raiders have signed Canadian Football League RB Kory Sheets. Terms of the contract were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: Fantasy owners in super deep dynasty leagues need to take note here. Sheets had the best stiff arm in college football when he came out of Purdue in 2009. He bounced around the league, but found his best fit in Canada. Over the last two years, Sheets has played for the Saskatchewan Roughriders. He rushed for 2,875 yards and 23 touchdowns on 516 carries.

Raiders | Kory Sheets worked out    Wed Jan 29, 12:21 PM

The Oakland Raiders worked out Canadian Football League RB Kory Sheets Tuesday, Jan. 28.

Footballguys view: Sheets looked like a talented back at one point before falling off the map. Not much should come of this, but maybe it's a sign to support the theory that they don't expect Rashad Jennings or Darren McFadden (or both) will not return. The Raiders might be looking under every rock for replacement backs.

Colts | Looking at Canadian player    Tue Dec 10, 05:03 PM

The Indianapolis Colts will work out Saskatchewan Roughriders RB Kory Sheets next week. He won't be eligible to become a free agent until Feb. 15 of next year if he's not re-signed by Saskatchewan.

Footballguys view: Sheets has played in the NFL before. He's a talented dual-purpose runner who can produce as a runner or receiver out of the backfield. When Sheets came out of Purdue in 2009 he was known for a wicked stiff arm and hard-charging style. He won the Grey Cup MVP in 2013 for his 20 carry, 197 yard and two touchdown performance.

Dolphins | Kory Sheets released     Tue Aug 23, 10:55 AM

The Miami Dolphins have released RB Kory Sheets.

Footballguys view: Sheets has a strong stiff arm and is a versatile player. He never played up to his potential in Miami, and perhaps a change of scenery is best for both him and the team.

Dolphins | Lex Hilliard finds the pylon    Sat Aug 20, 02:36 AM

Miami Dolphins RB Lex Hilliard had six carries for 25 yards and a touchdown in the preseason game Friday, Aug. 19, against the Carolina Panthers. Hilliard is trying to secure the No. 3 job over RBs Kory Sheets and Nic Grigsby.

Footballguys view: Hilliard could be a good player to remember on the waiver wire this year if (when) Reggie Bush gets hurt.

Dolphins | Kory Sheets vows to surprise    Wed Jun 15, 02:00 AM

Miami Dolphins RB Kory Sheets (Achilles'), who is now fully recovered from a torn Achilles' tendon, said Tuesday, June 14, that he plans to 'surprise people when (he) gets on the field.'

Footballguys view: We love the confidence from Sheets here, but coming back from an Achilles' injury could prove to be difficult. He's a versatile runner, a good receiver out of the backfield, and has a wicked stiff arm. He's trying to earn playing time behind rookie Daniel Thomas and Lex Hilliard.

Miami Dolphins RB Kory Sheets said he is completely recovered from the Achilles' tendon injury that made him miss the 2010 season. He is working on building his speed back up.

Footballguys view: Sheets could add much needed speed to the backfield if he gets his full burst back.

Dolphins | RB Sheets wants a shot at the starting job    Sun May 22, 03:04 PM

Omar Kelly, from the South Florida Sun-Sentinel, reports veteran RB Kory Sheets' goal this offseason is to put himself in position to compete with former Kansas State tailback Daniel Thomas, the team's second-round pick and win the starting spot that could be vacated by free agent Ronnie Brown. "With Ronnie and Ricky (Williams) possibly not coming back I don't plan on doing too much kick returning. I plan on being the main guy, picking up where Ronnie and Ricky left off," said Sheets.

Footballguys view: Sheets is a strong runner with a slashing style and a punishing stiff arm. Injuries have derailed his career so far, and he suffered an Achilles' tendon tear the first week of camp last year. We like his confidence and skill set pre-injury. However, coming back from an Achilles' injury is very difficult - especially for running backs.

Dolphins | Kory Sheets expected to compete for return job    Mon Mar 7, 03:14 PM

The Miami Dolphins are expected to allow RB Kory Sheets to compete for the kick returning duties next season, according to Ben Volin, of the Palm Beach Post.

Footballguys view: Sheets is an underrated player in the league, and has good ability in the open field. While at Purdue Sheets was also known to use a wicked stiff arm against unsuspecting defenders.

Dolphins | Two RBs expected to return    Fri Jan 28, 01:15 PM

Miami Dolphins RBs Lex Hilliard and Kory Sheets are expected to be with the team next season, reports Ben Volin, of the Palm Beach Post.

Footballguys view: Hilliard is a big back who runs with a lot of power. He is difficult to bring down when he gets a head of steam, and is a good option at the goalline. Sheets is an extremely versatile back who has value as a runner or receiver out of the backfield. He also was known for a wicked stiff arm while in college.

Miami Dolphins RB Kory Sheets (Achilles') will miss the entire 2010 season because of a torn Achilles' tendon, a source told Brian Biggane, of the Palm Beach Post.

Footballguys view: Sheets has talent, but was facing an uphill battle to make the final roster behind Ronnie Brown, Ricky Williams, Patrick Cobbs, and Lex Hilliard.

Dolphins | Kory Sheets wants to show versatility    Tue Jul 20, 08:27 PM

Miami Dolphins RB Kory Sheets is looking to prove to the team that he is more than just a fast running back, reports Omar Kelly, of the South Florida Sun-Sentinel. Sheets said, "I want to prove I can do other things outside of run and catch the ball. I want to prove I'm an every down back. That's been my main focus." Sheets will need to stand out during training camp and the preseason now that RBs Ronnie Brown (foot) and Patrick Cobbs (knee) are healthy. However, there are some things Sheets needs to do better, such as his pass blocking. Head coach Tony Sparano said, "We've talked to him at the end of the year about ways to get better and to improve. I've seen some improvement. (Blocking) will separate some of the backs, and certainly with Kory that will be some of the deciding factors down the road, how he handles that. Sheets will need to compete with Cobbs and RB Lex Hilliard for one of the final roster spots.

Footballguys view: Sheets is in a battle with Lex Hilliard to be the #3 RB for the team, which could be a valuable player in December considering Ronnie Brown's recent injury history.

Dolphins | RB Sheets out to prove he's more than a speedster    Tue Jul 20, 06:41 PM

Omar Kelly, from the South Florida Sun-Sentinel, reports RB Kory Sheets is out to prove to the coaching staff that he's much more than just a 'speedster' in training camp.

Footballguys view: Sheets is a reserve RB in Miami, buried on the depth chart behind Ronnie Brown, Ricky Williams, Patrick Cobbs, and Lex Hilliard but he has the skill set to contribute as a third-down back at least. Sheets is an instinctive runner who will hurt defenders with his quickness and speed in the open field. He also has a devastating stiff arm that he can unleash on unsuspecting defenders. Sheets faces an uphill battle for playing time in Miami, but if injuries strike in front of him on the depth chart then he could get a bigger opportunity to show what he can do.

Dolphins | Sheets could pressure Hilliard for 4th RB spot    Wed Jun 23, 06:26 PM

Barry Jackson, from the Miami Herald, reports players have raved about Kory Sheets, and if he's impressive on kickoff returns he will put serious heat on Lex Hilliard for the No. 4 running back job.

Footballguys view: Hilliard is a bruising power back, but Sheets is more versatile. Sheets has one of the best stiff arms in the game, and is a slashing RB who is not afraid to lower his shoulders and run inside. He is also a good receiver out of the backfield. This battle may come down to pass protection, and we'd give Hilliard the edge in that competition.

Miami Dolphins RB Kory Sheets and RB Tristan Davis returned kicks during morning practice Saturday, May 29, reports Omar Kelly, of the South Florida Sun-Sentinel.

Dolphins | Sheets signed     Tue Oct 13, 06:54 PM

Matt Maiocco, of The Santa Rosa Press Democrat, reports the Miami Dolphins have signed RB Kory Sheets off the San Francisco 49ers' practice squad. Terms of the contract were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: We liked what we saw from Kory Sheets at the Senior Bowl back in January. He is a strong runner that can pick up yards after contact because of his leg drive. While at Purdue, Sheets had one of the best stiff arms in college football and is a very aggressive runner. Sheets is also a versatile back, and can be used effectively as a receiver out of the backfield.

49ers | Pass protection a reason Sheets will not be added to roster    Thu Oct 1, 10:22 AM

Updating a previous report, Daniel Brown, of the San Jose Mercury News, reports San Francisco 49ers head coach Mike Singletary said the team does not plan to add practice squad RB Kory Sheets to the roster because he has too much to learn especially in pass protection.

Footballguys view: Pass protection is the biggest obstacle that rookie running backs must overcome before they get an expanded role. Keeping the quarterback upright is of the utmost importance, and recognizing blitzes and schemes is crucial for a back in charge of being the last line of defense. We like Sheets skill set running the football - power, vision, footwork, etc - but he must become better at protecting the quarterback if he wants to get on the field.

49ers | No plans to elevate Sheets from practice squad    Wed Sep 30, 09:28 AM

Matthew Barrows, of the Sacramento Bee, reports the San Francisco 49ers have no plans to elevate RB Kory Sheets from the practice squad this week despite the injury to RB Frank Gore (ankle). The team is confident in the tandem of RB Glen Coffee and RB Michael Robinson.

Footballguys view: Kory Sheets has NFL talent, and one of the best stiff arms in all of football, but he'll have to wait for his opportunity. If Coffee or Robinson get banged up this week, we should see Sheets called up from the practice squad. Gore is expected to miss the next three weeks.

49ers | Announce roster moves    Sat Sep 5, 05:31 PM

SF49ers.com reports the San Francisco 49ers have waived OT Jacob Bender, OT Alex Boone, WR Dobson Collins, DE Pannel Egboh, TE Joe Jon Finley, CB Eric Green, OG Kyle Howard, CB Terrail Lambert, FB Brit Miller, DT Khalif Mitchell, LB Jay Moore, TE Bear Pascoe, WR Maurice Price, FB William Rentmeester, LB Justin Roland, RB Kory Sheets, C Matt Spanos, OT Joe Toledo, LB Mark Washington and WR Dominique Zeigler.

Footballguys view: Zeigler was having a great camp and preseason, but it looks like it's back to the practice squad for him. The 49ers decided to keep Jason Hill and Michael Spurlock instead. Sheets was also drawing raves, but the team decided to only keep two true tailbacks in Frank Gore and Glen Coffee.   49ers | Sheets believes he can be every-down back    Mon Jun 15, 04:22 PM

Matt Maiocco, of The Santa Rosa Press Democrat, reports San Francisco 49ers RB Kory Sheets has been labeled a third-down back but believes he can be an every-down back because he has not been injury prone.

Footballguys view: Kory Sheets is known for a hard charging running style and a devastating stiff arm. Sheets has the skill set to be a capable back in the NFL - but lacks the bulk to be a featured carrier. He has added value because of his experience as a kick returner, and he may have to shine on special teams if he wants to make the final roster.
