Lions | Release Tony Scheffler    Tue Oct 22, 01:59 PM

Updating a previous report, the Detroit Lions released TE Tony Scheffler Tuesday, Oct. 22.

Footballguys view: With the emergence of UDFA Joseph Fauria there was no need for Scheffler anymore. Perhaps he could reunite with Jay Cutler in Chicago. Scheffler's best seasons were in Denver with Cutler throwing him passes.

Lions | Not ruling out Tony Scheffler going on IR    Mon Oct 14, 04:24 PM

Detroit Lions head coach Jim Schwartz did not rule out the possibility of TE Tony Scheffler (concussion) being placed on Injured Reserve.

Footballguys view: Scheffler has not made much of an impact during his time with the Lions. Putting him on IR would not be noticed that much, especially with rookie tight end Joseph Fauria making big scoring plays.

Lions | Tony Scheffler still being evaluated    Mon Oct 14, 01:34 PM

Detroit Lions head coach Jim Schwartz said TE Tony Scheffler (concussion) is still being evaluated for his concussion and there is no timetable for his return.

Lions | Joseph Fauria could have bigger role    Thu Oct 10, 09:27 PM

Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Scott Linehan indicated TE Joseph Fauria likely will have a bigger role in the offense Week 6 if TE Tony Scheffler (concussion) is not able to play.

Footballguys view: Not only could they have Sheffler out, but we're still unsure of Calvin Johnson's status. This is an offense which is in dire need of weapons and if one or both of those guys are out, naturally they'll turn to the next warm body. Keep in mind though, he's behind Brandon Pettigrew at tight end and Ryan Broyles/Reggie Bush in general. It's unlikely he'll produce much if anything.

Lions | Tony Scheffler may have bigger role    Thu Sep 26, 05:59 PM

Detroit Lions TEs Tony Scheffler, Brandon Pettigrew and Joseph Fauria may have bigger roles after WR Nate Burleson (arm) suffered a broken arm in a car accident. Scheffler had a season-high 21 snaps in Week 3 against the Washington Redskins after playing only four plays in the season opener and 17 snaps in Week 2. He has only been thrown to three times. Scheffler has lined up as a traditional tight end and in the slot so far this season.

Footballguys view: Scheffler has always had talent but has never played up to his potential. We're more excited about UDFA rookie TE Joseph Fauria than we are Scheffler. Fauria already has two receiving touchdowns this year.

Lions | Committed to Tony Scheffler    Tue Aug 20, 08:33 PM

Detroit Lions TE Joseph Fauria might see more playing time in the preseason game Thursday, Aug. 22, against the New England Patriots, and it might cut into TE Tony Scheffler's reps. However, despite fewer practice reps for Scheffler, the team insists the veteran is still part of the plans in 2013.

Footballguys view: Scheffler has never really played up to his potential since he left the Broncos in 2010. Fauria is an exciting rookie (UCLA) UDFA to consider in super deep dynasty leagues. He has incredible size, a large wingspan, and can make difficult catches seem routine.

Lions | Could keep four tight ends    Wed Jul 3, 04:14 PM

Lions | Two TEs could compete for one spot    Fri Jun 21, 05:21 PM

Detroit Lions TE Joseph Fauria may have to outperform TE Tony Scheffler during training camp to earn a roster spot because both are catch-first tight ends and the team may only want to keep one tight end like that.

Footballguys view: Fauria is a towering receiver who is a little more fluid and athletic than you expect him to be. His hands are more consistent than Scheffler's, but he doesn't have seam-ripping speed. He would be more of a red zone weapon than Scheffler, and cost less, so the Lions have a real decision on their hands if they choose to only carry one. The most important factor for Fauria is staying healthy, which has been a problem for him in the past. He's worth monitoring in deep TE premium dynasty leagues.

Lions | Tony Scheffler could still be let go    Sat Mar 9, 09:47 PM

The Detroit Lions could elect to part with TE Tony Scheffler is they need more salary cap space, although there is no indication this has been considered. OT Jeff Backus also could be an attractive candidate to cut for salary-cap reasons.

Lions | Defenses doubling Calvin Johnson    Tue Dec 18, 05:16 PM

Detroit Lions head coach Jim Schwartz said the Arizona Cardinals used double coverage on WR Calvin Johnson on almost every play and had several defenders on him at the line of scrimmage on several occasions. 'Early in the season, we were facing defenses that were more prevent-type defenses, where they were just trying to prevent a big play,' Schwartz said. '(They) had respect for a lot of other players. This game, they took the approach of saying, 'If Calvin can't make the play, then we're going to challenge all the rest of the guys.'' WRs Nate Burleson (knee), Ryan Broyles (knee) and Titus Young and TE Brandon Pettigrew (ankle) all were not active last week. WRs Kris Durham and Brian Robiskie and TEs Tony Scheffler and Will Heller had a combined seven catches for only 77 yards. The Atlanta Falcons are expected to employ similar tactics as the Cardinals in order to try to take Johnson out of the game in Week 16. Johnson still managed 10 catches for 121 yards against Arizona.

Footballguys view: This isn't news, it's called every week for Don Mega. Defenses are unwise to put single coverage on Johnson and thus he sees a lot of bracket coverage every week.

Lions | Not first punishment for Titus Young    Mon Nov 19, 11:10 PM

Detroit Lions WR Titus Young, who was sent home from the team's facility Monday, Nov. 19, has now been sent home twice in the past six months due to his immaturity. He angered receivers coach Shawn Jefferson and the coaching staff in Week 11 late in the fourth quarter. He incorrectly lined up in the slot on a second-down play with the team down 21-20. TE Tony Scheffler was the outside receiver to his left. OT Riley Reiff looked up and yelled to Young to get into the correct position, but was ignored. Scheffler tried to get back into the slot, but Young shook him off. As a result of the confusion, OT Gosder Cherilus was whistled for a false start.

Footballguys view: Fantasy owners need to look elsewhere if they're holding out hope for Young. His immaturity has led to greater opportunity for rookie WR Ryan Broyles.

Lions | Ryan Broyles set for expanded role    Sat Oct 27, 09:39 PM

Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Scott Linehan talked about the role of WR Ryan Broyles going forward. 'I think pretty much Broyles is going to play inside but we will use (WR Calvin Johnson) inside, we'll use (TE Tony Scheffler),' Linehan said. 'Really Broyles and Scheffler are in the same position, might use their strengths more, what they do better. So you'll see that. Maybe some (WR Titus Young) in the slot more.'

Footballguys view: Broyles is definitely worth rostering in all PPR leagues, and probably non-PPR leagues too, as he'll draw the best matchup of all of the Lions receivers vs Seattle today.

Lions | Titus Young, Ryan Broyles to split slot duties    Tue Oct 23, 03:50 PM

Detroit Lions WRs Titus Young and Ryan Broyles will split duties as the slot receiver with WR Nate Burleson (leg) out for the rest of the season. TE Tony Scheffler is also an option out of the slot. Young caught a game-high six passes in Week 7 Monday, Oct. 22, after battling a knee injury in the first five games. Broyles caught the first three passes of his career Monday.

Footballguys view: Young will get first crack at replacing Burleson but is an inconsistent player who is risky to trust in fantasy leagues. Broyles is a better route runner and has better hands than Young. We'll see if the rookie can end up producing bigger numbers than Young the rest of the year.

Lions | Ryan Broyles could have a role in Week 3    Thu Sep 20, 12:53 PM

Detroit Lions WR Ryan Broyles could play a role in the team's game plan for Week 3 if TE Tony Scheffler (calf) is unable to play.

Footballguys view: Dynasty owners take note here, and re-draft owners keep Broyles name on your waiver wire speed dial. He's coming back from a major knee injury he suffered last year in college at Oklahoma. If he regains his pre-injury form the Lions could have one of the best slot WRs in the game today. Broyles is very fast, makes cuts at speed, and is dangerous after the catch.

Lions | Tony Scheffler could get bigger role    Thu Jul 5, 01:43 PM

Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Scott Linehan said TE Tony Scheffler could receive a bigger role on offense this season because of his ability to be a receiver as well as a blocker in the offensive scheme. The team may look to get Scheffler into more favorable matchups this season.

Footballguys view: Scheffler is a good move TE with the speed to consistently attack the deep middle seam of the defense. He's a matchup player, but will still have to split targets at the TE position with Brandon Pettigrew.

Lions | Tony Scheffler comfortable with role     Wed May 16, 09:07 AM

Detroit Lions TE Tony Scheffler said he is not worried about losing time to rookie WR Ryan Broyles. Scheffler frequently played in the slot in the team's two-tight end personnel groupings last season, but Broyles has the skill-set to make plays from the slot as well. 'It's one of those things in the NFL where you learn to take care of your business and, as long as I do my job, I'm not really concerned with how he (Broyles) fits in,' Scheffler said. 'I'll help him out. We'll do a lot of similar stuff, so it's fun to have him. He's a great athlete and shoot, he's one of the best college wide receivers that ever played.'

Footballguys view: Broyles is a fantastic talent but may not be ready to begin the season as he recovers from his knee injury. The team could choose to put him on the PUP list which would force him to miss the first six weeks of the season.

Detroit Lions TE Tony Scheffler had three grabs for 37 yards and a touchdown in Week 10 against the Chicago Bears. Scheffler has touchdowns in back-to-back games for the second time this season.
