Lions | Detroit adds Tom Savage    Tue Apr 9, 07:11 PM

Free-agent QB Tom Savage (Bengals) was signed to an undisclosed deal by the Detroit Lions Tuesday, April 9.

Footballguys view: Savage will compete with Connor Cook to be the primary backup to Matthew Stafford in 2019. Don't be surprised if the Lions add a quarterback to the mix at some point (mid rounds?) in the 2019 NFL draft.

Bengals | Andy Dalton placed on IR    Mon Nov 26, 04:34 PM

Cincinnati Bengals QB Andy Dalton (thumb) was placed on the Reserve/Injured list Monday, Nov. 26. QB Tom Savage was claimed off waivers from the San Francisco 49ers in a corresponding move.

Footballguys view: Dalton's future with the team is up in the air, even though he's not set to hit the open market until 2021. If they release Dalton in the offseason, they can save $16.2 million in cap space and there is no dead money according to Spotrac.com. The Bengals move forward with Jeff Driskel as their starter.

49ers | Jeffery Wilson added to roster    Sat Nov 24, 05:02 PM

San Francisco 49ers practice squad RB Jeffery Wilson was signed to the 53-man roster Saturday, Nov. 24. Terms of the contract were not disclosed. The team also waived QB Tom Savage.

Footballguys view: Undrafted out of North Texas in 2018, Wilson is a good receiver out of the backfield. At 210 pounds he's a capable runner but did have ball security issues in college. We'll monitor him but only in crazy deep dynasty leagues.

The San Francisco 49ers waived QB Tom Savage on Saturday, Oct. 20, and they promoted DB Tyvis Powell from the practice squad to the active roster. Savage is likely to be re-signed next week.

Footballguys view: Savage was/is the team's veteran insurance plan at the quarterback position. They have C.J. Beathard as their starter and undrafted second-year pro Nick Mullens is his backup.

49ers | Niners could consider two for job    Mon Oct 8, 10:39 PM

Free-agent QB Tom Savage (Saints) is considered the favorite to be signed by the San Francisco 49ers in the wake of QB Jimmy Garoppolo (knee) being out for the year.

Footballguys view: Savage has a strong arm but is a statue in the pocket. He'll give the 49ers veteran depth behind C.J. Beathard.

Saints | Both NOLA backup QBs shaky is loss    Sat Aug 18, 01:34 AM

New Orleans Saints QB Taysom Hill made the start in the preseason game Friday, Aug. 17, against the Arizona Cardinals, but he committed a total of four turnovers. QB Tom Savage came on and completed 6-of-7 passes for 53 yards, although he was sacked three times. Both are competing with J.T. Barrett for the primary backup job behind QB Drew Brees.

Footballguys view: Hill is a favorite of the coaching staff (and he can play special teams!) but he's got to play better if he wants to win the no2 job behind Brees. We'll continue to monitor him in dynasty leagues.

Saints | Taysom Hill in mix for backup role    Thu May 24, 09:21 PM

New Orleans Saints QB Taysom Hill will compete with QB Tom Savage and QB J.T. Barrett for the backup quarterback job.

Footballguys view: Hill is incredibly athletic and one of those deep sleeper quarterbacks we love monitoring in the deepest dynasty leagues. Savage and Barrett shouldn't provide too much competition. Sean Payton raves about Hill, so that's something to get your attention.

Saints | New Orleans may only keep two QBs    Sun May 6, 11:48 AM

The New Orleans Saints are considering keeping just two quarterbacks on their roster for the 2018 season if QB Taysom Hill is able to beat out QB Tom Savage for the No. 2 spot on the depth chart behind QB Drew Brees.

Footballguys view: The Saints didn't select a quarterback in the 2018 NFL draft, largely due to the support that Hill has within the building. Sean Payton may be his biggest supporter, and reports indicate he loves Hill's game. Undrafted out of BYU in 2017, Hill originally signed with the Packers but did not make the final roster as a rookie. The Saints scooped him up, and he's even been active for them on special teams. Hill is an athletic quarterback who often draws Tony Romo comparisons. We're going to continue monitoring him in dynasty leagues.

Saints | Tom Savage lands in Big Easy    Wed Mar 14, 06:01 PM

The New Orleans Saints signed free-agent QB Tom Savage (Texans) on Wednesday, March 14. Terms of the deal were undisclosed.

Footballguys view: With Chase Daniel in Chicago to back up Mitchell Trubisky, the Saints needed a no2 QB behind starter Drew Brees. Savage is much different from Brees in terms of size, and he has a big arm. We think the Saints take a look at a QB in the 2018 NFL draft (Kyle Lauletta?) to groom behind Brees.

Houston Texans QB Tom Savage (concussion) was placed on the Reserve/Injured list Saturday, Dec. 23. The team also signed practice squad TE Ryan Malleck to their active roster.

Houston Texans QB T.J. Yates will start in Week 16 against the Pittsburgh Steelers, according to head coach Bill O'Brien. QB Tom Savage was classified as 'a ways off' from playing by O'Brien.

Footballguys view: Too.....many....jokes.....OK, now that we've gathered ourselves and ignored that perfect setup for a joke about Savage and being "a ways off," we'll simply put it this way -- there's no way you want to role with Yates in your championship (or any other game) against the Steelers.

Texans | Tom Savage sits again    Thu Dec 14, 06:12 PM

Houston Texans QB Tom Savage (concussion) did not participate in practice Thursday, Dec. 14.

Footballguys view: It's looking like TJ Yates time, which won't hurt DeAndre Hopkins but makes almost everyone else in the passing offense a bad idea waiting to happen. Really, Savage was no great shakes, but he's better than Yates. And we haven't even got to the best part yet -- this week Houston faces a tough Jacksonville defense. Yeah, you should avoid him unless you are in dire straits.

Texans | Tom Savage likely out    Mon Dec 11, 10:35 AM

Houston Texans QB Tom Savage (concussion) is unlikely to start in Week 15, according to head coach Bill O'Brien.

Footballguys view: Savage was twitching after he was initially concussed in the game against the 49ers. Somehow he was back out on the field after that, but not for long before T.J. Yates replaced him. Yates threw a couple of touchdowns to DeAndre Hopkins, but this week against the Jaguars might not be as fruitful.

Texans | Tom Savage leaves game    Sun Dec 10, 02:32 PM

Houston Texans QB Tom Savage (undisclosed) was taken to the locker room after suffering an undisclosed injury in Week 14.

Footballguys view: TJ Yates is in and connecting with DeAndre Hopkins. Savage appeared to have a seizure and briefly re-entered the game in a sequence that will be one of the most-talked about of the week after a brutal Sunday night game last week turned the discussion to player safety in football.

Texans | Tom Savage limits turnovers    Sun Dec 3, 09:13 PM

Houston Texans QB Tom Savage completed 31 of his 49 pass attempts for 365 yards, one touchdown and one interception in the Week 13 game against the Tennessee Titans.

Footballguys view: Savage fought to the end and actually played well (for him) considering that he lost two wide receivers and a tight end during this game, although we should also chalk some of this up to the Titans soft pass defense. Savage does seem to have enough going on to keep some pulse of fantasy value for at least one target other than DeAndre Hopkins against San Francisco next week, assuming the team doesn't turn to TJ Yates.

Texans | Tom Savage put on notice    Wed Nov 29, 01:08 AM

Houston Texans head coach Bill O'Brien said QB Tom Savage needs to stop turning the ball over or the team will 'have to go in a different direction.'

Texans | Houston sticking with Tom Savage    Tue Nov 28, 03:08 PM

Houston Texans QB Tom Savage will continue to be the starter as head coach Bill O'Brien said he is not considering a quarterback change.

Footballguys view: The Texans don't have a better option, even though Savage has been a turnover machine during his time as the starter. In six games, Savage has committed 12 turnovers. On Monday night against the Ravens, Savage had two interceptions and a fumble. They only have two healthy quarterbacks in the building, Savage and T.J. Yates.
