Jets | Sanchez throws two TD passes, runs for another Week 8 Sun Nov 1, 05:18 PM
The Associated Press reports New York Jets QB Mark Sanchez was 20-for-35 for 265 yards with two touchdown passes Week 8 against the Miami Dolphins. Sanchez also ran the ball four times for six yards, including a one-yard touchdown run.
| Our view: Sanchez struggled during the first half and was battered by the Dolphins' blitzing defense. He recovered to bring the Jets back into the game in the second half with a huge third quarter but the comeback fell short. |

Jets | Sticking with Sanchez Mon Oct 19, 06:27 PM
The Associated Press reports New York Jets head coach Rex Ryan is sticking with QB Mark Sanchez as the team's starting quarterback despite his five-interception game in Week 6.
| Our view: As well they should. Sanchez is going to have growing pains. He had a terrible game because he didn't adjust to the conditions, and generally tried to do too much, but that shows an unrelenting aggressiveness that should serve him well later in his career. |

Jets | Sanchez to remain starting quarterback Mon Oct 19, 10:16 AM
Tim Graham, of ESPN.com, reports New York Jets QB Mark Sanchez will remain the team's starting quarterback, according to head coach Rex Ryan. Ryan said he considered pulling Sanchez in Week 6 after throwing five interceptions. 'You're not going to win too many games throwing five picks,' Ryan said. 'I thought about pulling him, but I still believe in him. He gives us the best chance to win, and he will remain our quarterback.'

Jets | Sanchez hitting rookie wall? Mon Oct 19, 10:09 AM
Tim Graham, of ESPN.com, reports New York Jets QB Mark Sanchez has completed 36 of 80 passes for 429 yards and one touchdown with eight interceptions over his past three games. He has a 26.5 passer rating for those games. He has also been sacked seven times.
| Our view: The rookie wall hits quarterbacks sooner or later, and Sanchez is no exception. He's been struggling recently, but the Jets are going to stick by him through thick and thin. Sanchez is the quarterback of the future, and he's gaining valuable experience each Sunday. Kellen Clemens is not a better starting option, and should remain the backup quarterback. |

The Associated Press reports New York Jets QB Mark Sanchez was 10-for-29 for 119 yards with five interceptions Week 6 against the Buffalo Bills.
| Our view: Sanchez tied a team record with five interceptions, four in the second half and overtime, and generally looked lost at times while forcing the ball into a Buffalo back seven full of reserves. Rex Ryan considered pulling him in overtime, but decided against it. Expect more rookie growing pains in the future for a player who started only just 16 games in college. |

Mark Cannizzaro, of the New York Post, reports New York Jets WR Wallace Wright could see more reps as a slot receiver after the team traded WR Chansi Stuckey to the Cleveland Browns for WR Braylon Edwards.

The Associated Press reports New York Jets QB Mark Sanchez was 14-for-27 for 138 yards with three interceptions Week 4 against the New Orleans Saints. The Jets lost 24-10 to the Saints, Sanchez's first loss as a pro.
| Our view: Quite simply, the Saints made Sanchez look like a rookie. He also held the ball too long in his own end zone and suffered a sack that turned into a TD for the Saints. |

Jets | Sanchez throws two TD passes Week 3 Sun Sep 27, 06:19 PM
The Associated Press reports New York Jets QB Mark Sanchez was 17-for-30 for 171 yards with two touchdown passes and an interception Week 3 against the Tennessee Titans. He also had a 14-yard touchdown run in the game. Sanchez is the first rookie quarterback to start a season and win his first three games.
| Our view: Sanchez was consistent from start to finish and didn't make a critical mistake in a close second half. His late touchdown pass on a short field put the Jets back in the lead and allowed the defense to win the game. |

Jets | Sanchez converting on third down Tue Sep 22, 12:04 PM
Jason La Canfora, of NFL.com, reports New York Jets QB Mark Sanchez is 17-for-23 passing with 228 yards and one touchdown on third down attempts so far this season.
| Our view: Former Browns and Ravens scout Daniel Jeremiah told us that poise is the number one attribute a quarterback can have, and Sanchez is certainly cool under fire. On third downs Sanchez has an amazing 134.8 quarterback ranking, and does a good job of finding his weapons downfield. It's a little early to put this kid in the hall of fame, but he is certainly looking like the real deal and Jets fans are ecstatic. |

Sanchez had three defenders bearing down on him as he scrambled out of the pocket before delivering the touchdown to Stuckey. In 2 1/2 quarters of play, Sanchez led the team to 20 points. Jets | Team names Sanchez starter Wed Aug 26, 08:38 AM
Jay Glazer, of FoxSports.com, reports that Jets head coach Rex Ryan has informed Mark Sanchez that he will be the starting QB for the New York Jets
| Our view: Sanchez had about as a rough a start as a QB can have against the Raven, but he kept swinging and didn't get overwhelmed or shell up when his first pass was intercepted by Haloti Ngata and returned for a TD, and his second pass was dropped by Ray Lewis, who also had a clear path to the end zone. We were encouraged by Sanchez's mental toughness and perseverance, but there will be still be plenty of growing pains for Sanchez this year. |

His second pass was also nearly picked off, but he was able to rebound to finish 3-for-8 for 43 yards with a touchdown and interception in the game.
| Our view: Sanchez almost had his first two passes in his first NFL start turn into pick sixes, but Ray Lewis obliged him with a drop. He showed his mental toughness by hanging in and continuing to pilot the offense to the best of his abilities, instead of shelling up in fear of doing even worse as the game went on. |

Jets | Clemens, Sanchez both have a good practice Wed Aug 19, 07:34 PM

Sanchez also had one ball dropped by WR Wallace Wright, and hooked up with TE Dustin Keller twice, with a third completion to Keller ruled out of bounds. Clemens most impressive play was a 30-yard pass to Marcus Henry.

Rookie Mark Sanchez saw one drive of action, hitting 3 of 4 passes for 88 yards, including a 48-yard pass to WR David Clowney, and led the team to a touchdown drive.

Jets | Clayton: Sanchez is obvious starting QB Fri Aug 14, 06:13 PM
John Clayton, of ESPN.com, reports that he believes that first-round pick QB Mark Sanchez will be the opening day starter for the Jets. Clayton writes, ": Mark Sanchez is going to win the starting quarterback job. Understand that Ryan is a players' coach. He understands the mentality of a football player and what makes him tick. He knows quarterback battles can't be transparent. Players in the locker room know who the best quarterback is on the field, and the fact is, Sanchez is the most talented quarterback on the field. That's why he will beat out Kellen Clemens."
| Our view: Sanchez spoke like he was going to start when the Jets took him, but he has been a gracious competitor since then. Sanchez continues to improve, while Clemens performance has been level throughout camp, so this proclamation makes a lot of sense. |

Jets | Sanchez will be limited because of O-Line injuries Wed Aug 12, 09:18 PM
The Newark Star-Ledger is reporting the fallout of the injuries to the offensive linemen -- center Nick Mangold (knee) and Damien Woody (concussion) will also miss Friday's game -- is simple: The much ballyhooed quarterback competition between Kellen Clemens and Mark Sanchez will be scaled back, Ryan said. Clemens and Sanchez will get fewer reps with the first team. "I don't think we'll go as long with those two as maybe we would have liked to have," Ryan said. "It'll affect our plans a little bit."

Jets | Sanchez sizzles with the first team Sat Aug 8, 08:18 PM
Dennis Waszak Jr., from the Associated Press, reports working exclusively with the first-team offense for the first time this summer, Sanchez completed 10 of 19 passes for two touchdowns and an interception. "Every day needs to be a step forward when you get a chance to go with that first-team group," said Sanchez, trying to win the spot vacated when Brett Favre retired. "I thought it really showed that I was ready for that, and I took advantage of that time."
| Our view: Sanchez has had some good days and some bad days in training camp. It's to be expected because he's a rookie, but it's good to see that he is making progress and excelling with the first-team. We should know by the third preseason game who has the edge in the competition. |

Jets | Sanchez now working with first-string offense Sat Aug 8, 02:27 PM
Dave Hutchinson, of The Star-Ledger, reports New York Jets offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer told QB Mark Sanchez he will begin alternating reps with QB Kellen Clemens with the first-string offense. Sanchez worked with the starters first during practice Saturday, Aug. 8. Sanchez hit 10 of 19 passes, with two touchdowns and one interception. His tempo with the offense was crisp and he got the team in and out of the huddle quickly. Clemens will work with the starters first in the afternoon workout. During the morning, he hit four of 12 passes and was intercepted once. He almost was picked off two other times. Head coach Rex Ryan said he feels Sanchez has taken a step forward in the last few practices. 'He's confident. He's moving around and he's not moving around like a deer in head lights. He's poised. He can make all of the throws. He's taking a step forward,' Ryan said of the team's first-round pick.
| Our view: Sanchez has all the momentum in this QB battle, and we'll be surprised if Clemens can reverse the trend. |

Clemens hit four of 12 passes with one interception and two near interceptions in the morning workout. He'll run with the first team this afternoon.

Tom E. Curran, from NBCSports.com, reports the difference between confidence and arrogance is paper-thin. And trying to prove you belong while not giving off an air of entitlement is no easy task. The Jets didn't trade up for Mark Sanchez so that he'd tiptoe around training camp and try not to offend. Head coach Rex Ryan said, "I wanted to see poise. I also wanted to see the accuracy that he showed. He really did show up."

Jets | Sanchez slightly sharper than Clemens Wed Aug 5, 07:22 PM
Rich Cimini, from the New York Daily News, reports rookie Mark Sanchez was slightly sharper than veteran Kellen Clemens. He was 6-for-12, with no turnovers, and he handled the blitz particularly well. His best throw was a laser to Wallce Wright, fitting it between two defenders. When Wright came out of the crowd with the ball, it surprised some observers on the sideline because many assumed it was incomplete. In the two-minute drill, Sanchez led the second-team offense to the opponents' 23, but it fizzled there with three incompletions and a false-start penalty. Afterward, this is how Ryan assessed the QB competition: "Clemens has a better grasp of the system than Sanchez does. They've both had their moments, and they've both had their moments when you're like, 'What are they doing?'"
| Our view: This competition should go back and forth all through training camp. Sanchez got more 1st team reps in 9-on-7 drills, but Clemens got almost all the 1st team reps when the team went 11-on-11. |

Jets | No timetable for Sanchez to work with starters Tue Aug 4, 04:26 PM
Eric Allen, of NewYorkJets.com, reports New York Jets offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer said QB Mark Sanchez will receive reps with the first-team offense but there is no timetable for when that will happen. 'I think that's something we definitely want to do. We're not going to put a timetable on it. We're just a couple of practices in. A big part of it - like any rookie or player - is that you have to earn those reps. So as Mark continues to get more comfortable and continues to grow, which he's doing, we'll make sure we give him some more work,' Schottenheimer said.
| Our view: Kellen Clemens is outplaying Sanchez, but the gap is closing. Expect Sanchez to get time with the first team soon. |

Rich Cimini, of the New York Daily News, reports the New York Jets' quarterback competition between QBs Mark Sanchez and Kellen Clemens is a virtual dead heat. Due to his edge in experience, Clemens should look better than Sanchez at this stage, but that hasn't happened.
| Our view: If it's even close to a dead heat now, then that means Clemens will have to blow away Sanchez in the preseason games. Either way, we're thinking the Jets QB play will be rough through at least September. |

Jets | Clemens is good, then bad Sat Aug 1, 10:33 PM
QB Kellen Clemens looked good for most of the workout but then threw two interceptions near the end, both to SS Jim Leonhard on back-to-back passes near the end of practice, both in 11-on-11 play. Clemens finished a combined 6-for-13 in 9-on-9 and 11-on-11 drills, while Mark Sanchez was 4-for-11 with one pick, to S Eric Smith in 9-on-9. [Smith, of course, had 5 INTs during the June mini-camp.] Clemens had a 60-yard TD to Leon Washington out of the backfield and 40-yard completion on a deep middle route to Jerricho Cotchery, who made a terrific catch in between FS Kerry Rhodes and CB Lito Sheppard.
| Our view: The competition between Clemens and Sanchez may come down to the wire. Even when a starter is finally named, the team may switch back and forth during the season. |

Jets | Bad morning practice for the quarterbacks Fri Jul 31, 08:32 PM
Dan Leberfeld, from Scout.com, is reporting the Friday morning practice was ugly for the passing offense. Not to make excuses for the players, but it was pouring out. "The timing is a little off anyway just with the first day (and) guys coming back. We have that break and you don't quite get your timing with the receivers. And add the rain to it. That threw us off a little bit."

Jets | Quarterback battle a heavyweight fight in the making Sun Jul 26, 02:05 PM

QBs Mark Sanchez and Kellen Clemens are about to compete for the starting duties. 'Hopefully, it'll be easy for us and easy for the fans to figure out the winner,' Schottenheimer said.
| Our view: Jets head coach Rex Ryan has no qualms about starting a rookie, after all he was in Baltimore last year and saw first hand how then-rookie Joe Flacco was able to progress during his first year. How well Sanchez grasps the offense will go a long way in determining his fate. Jets | Saints head coach Payton predicts possible playoffs for the Jets Mon Jul 20, 11:06 AM
New Orleans Saints head coach Sean Payton, writing for Sports Illustrated, reports that he believes the New York Jets are a non-playoff team from 2008 that has a chance to make the postseason this year. Payton writes, "I think Rex Ryan will do a great job of creating a culture that lends itself to winning. I also love Mark Sanchez as a young quarterback prospect."
| Our view: The Jets had a solid defense and the pieces of a power running game in place last year, and they had a good enough record entering December to make the playoffs, but Brett Favre had other ideas. If Sanchez or Kellen Clemens can just be an effective game manager, and Rex Ryan can get the Jets defense to smell blood like he did with the Ravens, Payton's prediction will look prescient in January. |

Jets | Sanchez has sights set on starting Mon Jun 29, 10:10 AM
Eric Allen, of NewYorkJets.com, reports New York Jets QB Mark Sanchez said he is confident of earning the team's starting quarterback job. Sanchez is competing with QB Kellen Clemens for the spot. 'For me, I feel like I'm going to be on the field and that's what you always want to do. You don't grow up dreaming of being a backup, so I'm going to go for it,' Sanchez said. 'I know Kellen's going to do the same thing, and it's going to be a great competition and I'm excited to compete with him.'
| Our view: We love seeing this kind of confidence from the rookie, but the NFL is a brutal game and he will go through his ups and downs if he makes it into the starting lineup. Sanchez has had a few bad days in minicamp, which is natural for a rookie, but Jets head coach Rex Ryan will start the best QB for the team. Last season when Ryan was with the Ravens he got to see first hand how a rookie QB (Joe Flacco) could succeed if the offense was built the right way. Like Baltimore, the Jets will rely on their ground game to take the pressure off of the quarterback. Sanchez will have to beat out veteran Kellen Clemens for the job, and this is a competition that could go on throughout preseason. |

Some Jets players have told Cimini that the biggest knock on Sanchez is that sometimes he doesn't know where to go with the football.
