Packers | Make roster moves    Mon Oct 15, 05:13 PM

The Green Bay Packers claimed RB Johnny White (Bills) off waivers and placed RB Brandon Saine (knee) on Injured Reserve Monday, Oct. 15.

Footballguys view: White is a determined runner who reminds some in the scouting community of Bengals RB BenJarvus Green-Ellis. He'll serve as the team's third-string RB behind Alex Green and James Starks.

Packers | Will go with hot hand at RB     Thu Oct 11, 09:17 AM

Green Bay Packers RB Alex Green will get the first carry in the team's Week 6 game. After that, however, head coach Mike McCarthy said he will go with the 'hot hand' between Green, RB James Starks and RB Brandon Saine. All three running backs received first-team reps in practice Wednesday, Oct. 10. 'Alex and James both got reps today and so did Brandon Saine,' McCarthy said. 'The first carry will be Alex Green. He's a little farther ahead than James is right now and that's the way we'll go. But we have three halfbacks and we'll utilize all three of them.'

Footballguys view: The Packers backfield settled down and gave us some predictability for exactly five weeks. Green is worth a pickup to see what happens, but all of the backs will be used, making none of them safe plays even in your flex spot.

Packers | James Starks may get his chance    Tue Oct 9, 01:50 PM

The Green Bay Packers are considering going to RB James Starks, who has been inactive for the first five games, with RB Cedric Benson (foot) out at least eight weeks. RB Alex Green had a big run in the team's Week 5 games, but the team is worried about his protection issues. 'Alex did some good things, and there's some things he'll definitely learn from,' head coach Mike McCarthy said. 'He obviously had the big run there, did a great job there and a nice job on the trap play. But there's some protection opportunities that we need to clean up and the course of certain runs. (He's) a young guy that took advantage of an opportunity, and this will be an opportunity for him and James and Brandon to play this week against Houston.' RB Brandon Saine could also be mixed in.

Footballguys view: We're not excited about Starks' chances here. We saw him get his shot last year and fail to impress. Expect Alex Green and Starks to be used in some form of RBBC, but also expect the Packers to run less without Cedric Benson. Bump up the projections for Aaron Rodgers and the passing game until (if) Benson comes back.

Packers | Brandon Saine back from injury    Tue Aug 28, 11:24 PM

Green Bay Packers RB Brandon Saine (hamstring) is back on the practice field after dealing with a hamstring injury.

Footballguys view: Saine could be in line for some carries in the preseason finale if he's healthy.

Packers | Trio of backs ready to fill void    Tue Aug 28, 11:23 PM

Green Bay Packers RBs Cedric Benson and Alex Green are expected to see a bulk of the carries early in the regular season if RB James Starks (turf toe) is not ready to go. Starks has progressed slower than the team hoped. RB Brandon Saine (hamstring) is also in the mix for touches if Starks isn't ready.

Footballguys view: We like Benson more than Starks in the Packers offense. Starks is big and fast in a straight line, but is a space runner who is only productive when holes are huge in front of him. Benson is a two down back, with little to offer as a receiver. However, he's very determined and his straight ahead style could be quite effective for a Green Bay offense that spreads defenses out.

Packers | Fast fact: Lack of 100-yard individual rushing performances    Sun Jul 29, 09:04 PM

The Green Bay Packers have just one 100-yard individual rushing performance in the past 32 regular season games. They are 25-7 during that time. The Packers are very young at running back this season, with RBs James Starks, Alex Green, Brandon Saine and undrafted rookies Marc Tyler and Duane Bennett on roster.

Packers | Brandon Saine might keep backup RB job warm    Sun Jun 17, 08:44 PM

Green Bay Packers RB Brandon Saine did well in spot duty last season when called upon, but he still has work to do to become a regular productive player. As it stands, he might only serve as the No. 2 RB until RB Alex Green (knee) is regular for a full-time workload.

Footballguys view: Saine is a good all-around back, but the Packers don't use their ground game enough to be a huge fantasy factor.

Packers | James Starks believes this will be his big season    Sun Jun 17, 02:27 AM

Green Bay Packers RB James Starks is convinced he is ready to break out this season. 'I believe I can and I believe I will,' Starks said. Starks has a long history of injury problems, so counting on him for an entire 16-game season may be too optimistic. He has spent time during the offseason working on his flexibility and endurance with hopes of avoiding another injury-filled season.

Footballguys view: Starks is a space runner who excels when rushing lanes are huge. The Packers don't use their RBs enough to establish Starks as a big fantasy factor in 2012. He's coming off the board at RB29 in the end of the sixth-round.

Packers | Ryan Grant may not return     Tue Jan 17, 11:01 AM

The Green Bay Packers may not look to re-sign impending free-agent RB Ryan Grant. The Packers may hesitate to commit more guaranteed money to a 29-year old running back.

Footballguys view: The Packers have a good group of young RBs including James Starks, Alex Green, and Brandon Saine.

Packers | Ryan Grant totals 78 yards from scrimmage    Mon Dec 26, 12:15 AM

Green Bay Packers RB Ryan Grant had 44 yards on eight carries in Week 16 against the Chicago Bears, and he added 34 yards on a pair of receptions. Teammate RB James Starks (ankle) aggravated his injury, so Grant and RB Brandon Saine might see added work in Week 17.

Packers | Three probable for Week 16    Fri Dec 23, 06:23 PM

Green Bay Packers RB Brandon Saine (concussion), DE Howard Green (foot) and LB Desmond Bishop (calf) are listed as probable for Week 16 and are expected to play. Green was limited during practice Friday, Dec. 23, while the other two fully participated in practice.

Packers | Two practice    Thu Dec 22, 03:14 PM

Green Bay Packers RBs Brandon Saine (concussion) and James Starks (knee, ankle) practiced in full Thursday, Dec. 22.

Footballguys view: Both should be back for the Packers on Sunday. This clouds the fantasy value of veteran Ryan Grant. We can't recommend any Packers RB as anything more than a desperation flex play.

The Green Bay Packers have declared RB Brandon Saine, OT Chad Clifton, LB Desmond Bishop, QB Graham Harrell, WR Greg Jennings, RB James Starks, DL Ryan Pickett inactive for Week 15.

Footballguys view: Ryan Grant and John Kuhn will get the RB work today and both make for nice flex options.

Packers | Brandon Saine gets 10 touches in Week 13    Mon Dec 5, 12:13 AM

Green Bay Packers RB Brandon Saine carried six times for 16 yards in Week 13 against the New York Giants, and he added four receptions for 29 yards. He saw an increased workload with RB James Starks (ankle) leaving the game early.

Footballguys view: Aaron Rodgers said Saine might have the best hands on the team, so he could be a good pickup in PPR leagues if James Starks injury is significant.

Packers | Sign eight to practice squad    Sun Sep 4, 03:31 PM

The Green Bay Packers have signed WR Diondre Borel, OL Ray Dominguez, C Sampson Genus, WR Tori Gurley, QB Graham Harrell, CB Brandian Ross, RB Brandon Saine and WR Chastin West.

Footballguys view: The Packers need to upgrade the backup QB behind Aaron Rodgers if Matt Flynn moves on in free agency next year. Harrell could be the guy but he will continue to develop on the team's practice squad.

Packers | Dimitri Nance, others waived    Sat Sep 3, 07:22 PM

The Green Bay Packers waived RB Dimitri Nance, WR Diondre Borel, T Chris Campbell, OL Ray Dominguez, DL Chris Donaldson, LB Ricky Elmore, C Sampson Genus, CB Josh Gordy, WR Tori Gurley, LB Cardia Jackson, DE Elisha Joseph, S Anthony Levine, OL Nick McDonald, LB Elijah Joseph, CB Brandian Ross, DL Jay Ross and RB Brandon Saine.

Footballguys view: Gurley is a tough, big frame wideout who should catch on a practice squad somewhere. Nance got some action with the Packers last year, but was not needed with the drafting of Alex Green in the third round.

Packers | Deep at running back    Sun Aug 21, 12:36 AM

Green Bay Packers RBs Dimitri Nance and Quinn Johnson are in the running for roster spots, and RB Brandon Saine has looked good during training camp, too. The team usually keeps six running backs on roster each year, so they could run into a numbers game. RBs Ryan Grant, James Starks, Alex Green and John Kuhn are at the top of the position currently.

Footballguys view: Saine should make the practice squad, but he could get sniped by an RB needy team. Nance could also fall into that category after the Packers signed him from the Falcons practice squad last year.

Packers | Agree with 16 undrafted rookies    Tue Jul 26, 09:26 PM

The Green Bay Packers announced Tuesday, July 26, that they have agreed to terms with 16 undrafted rookie free agents. The list includes QB Diondre Borel (Utah State), S Anthony Bratton (Delaware), G/T Ray Dominguez (Arkansas), C Sampson Genus (South Florida), WR Tori Gurley (South Carolina), FB Jon Hoese (Minnesota), S M.D. Jennings (Arkansas State), LB Elijah Joseph (Temple), NT Elisha Joseph (Temple), OLB Jamari Lattimore (Middle Tennessee State), DB Brandian Ross (Youngstown State), RB Brandon Saine (Ohio State), G Theo Sherman (James Madison), WR Antoine Smithson (Utah), DE/OLB Vic So'oto (Brigham Young) and WR Kerry Taylor (Arizona State).

Footballguys view: Gurley is the most interesting fantasy player. He's a big, strong wideout who could do some of the same things James Jones did for the Packers passing game.
