NFL | Stars would have to align for Matt Ryan Thu May 18, 09:02 AM
Updating previous reports, free-agent QB Matt Ryan (Colts) said the stars would have to align for him to return to playing in the NFL, but he's not shutting any doors.
Footballguys view: That's fine and dandy, but the chances of that happening seem to be slim. Ryan was outstanding during most of his time with the Falcons, but that was then and this is now. Last year for the Colts, Ryan was benched in favor of guys like Sam Ehlinger and Nick Foles. He's simply not the player he used to be, and what he is today is veteran backup level at best. Perhaps something opens up, but we see Ryan staying in the broadcasting booth (and we hope he's pretty good in there). |

NFL | Matt Ryan moving into the booth Mon May 15, 10:42 AM
Free-agent QB Matt Ryan (Colts) announced he will serve as an NFL analyst for CBS this season, but he also said he isn't retiring from football.
Footballguys view: Ryan is going to be 38-years old later this month, but he's still holding out hope that another team is going to be interested in his services. Never say never, but it looks like Ryan's playing days in the NFL are done. He was downright terrible in 2022, his lone season with the Colts, and the team let him go in mid-March earlier this year. Ryan is no longer the player he used to be, and teams have not shown any interest in the veteran on the open market. |

We'll work through it,' Ballard said Wednesday, March 1. 'We're just getting the staff settled. We'll start working through things next week.' The Colts would save $17.2 million if Ryan is released before March 17.

Colts | Nick Foles to miss season finale Mon Jan 2, 01:17 PM
Indianapolis Colts QB Nick Foles (ribs) is in 'a lot of pain' after he was carted off the field in Week 17 versus the New York Giants and will not play in Week 18 against the Houston Texans.
Footballguys view: Inserting Foles as the starter didn't work, and he got injured in the process. Colts interim head coach Jeff Saturday named Sam Ehlinger as the Week 18 starter over Matt Ryan. We'll monitor Ehlinger in super deep dynasty formats, but this is a downgrade for the Colts' offense. |

Colts | Nick Foles to start again in Week 17 Tue Dec 27, 02:36 PM
Indianapolis Colts QB Nick Foles will draw another start in Week 17 against the New York Giants, according to head coach Jeff Saturday. Sam Ehlinger will remain his backup, while Matt Ryan will be inactive.
Footballguys view: The Colts are just trying to get to the end of the regular season. They'll start Foles, but inside the building, they are looking at options for 2023 and beyond. At this time, the Colts have the no.5 overall pick in the 2023 NFL draft. That means guys like QB Bryce Young (Alabama) or QB C.J. Stroud (Ohio State) could be options for them - if either one is available at that time. They'd likely need a higher draft pick if Young or Stroud is their target to be the team's quarterback of the future. |

Footballguys view: Ryan and the Colts built a big lead, but they could not hang on to get the win. The Vikings went on a tear in the second half, and Ryan couldn't muster enough offense to keep his team on top. |

Colts | Indy not settled on Sam Ehlinger Tue Nov 8, 09:49 PM
Indianapolis Colts QB Sam Ehlinger will start in Week 10 but the team could move to QBs Nick Foles or Matt Ryan if things continue to go south, owner Jim Irsay said on Tuesday, Nov. 8.
Footballguys view: That's good news in what is looking more like a lost season for the Colts. It's a cluster-you-know-what in Indianapolis with interim head coach Jeff Saturday likely in over his head. Ehlinger has been flat-out bad as the team's starter, and going back to Ryan or giving Foles a chance to start would be a much better plan...unless your plan is to tank for a better draft pick. |

Colts | Indy benches Matt Ryan, turns to Sam Ehlinger Mon Oct 24, 01:53 PM
Indianapolis Colts QB Matt Ryan has been removed as the starting quarterback effective immediately, according to a source.
Footballguys view: Sam Ehlinger is expected to replace him as the starter for the remainder of the season and Nick Foles will remain the primary backup. The Colts owner Jim Irsay was rumored to be the one to make this call. Head coach Frank Reich was not making it work with Ryan who looks washed at this point in his career. Ehlinger was a sixth-round pick out of Texas in the 2021 NFL draft. He's a fearless dual-threat quarterback who can attack a defense with his arm or his legs. We'll see if Reich can get more controlled play from the young and wild passer. |

Colts | Three touchdowns for Matt Ryan Sun Oct 16, 04:47 PM
Indianapolis Colts QB Matt Ryan went 42-for-58 for 389 yards and three touchdowns against the Jacksonville Jaguars in Week 6.
Footballguys view: The Colts don't want Ryan throwing the ball 58 times a week, but it worked as he authored a game-winning drive with a score to rookie Alec Pierce. Ryan has a wide range of weekly outcomes, but a result like this one keeps him streaming consideration against the Titans next week. |

Indianapolis Colts QB Matt Ryan completed 32-of-50 passes for 352 yards, one touchdown and one interception in Week 1 against the Houston Texans in his team debut.
Footballguys view: In a familiar scene, Ryan wasn't always able to get it done in the red zone, and the team had to settle for a tie. He'll face a Jaguars defense that Carson Wentz lit up today, so perhaps things will get better for Ryan next week even though the Colts quarterback did have a solid fantasy day on the back of 50 attempt volume. |

Colts | Matt Ryan to play in preseason opener Wed Aug 10, 01:55 PM
Indianapolis Colts QB Matt Ryan will play in the preseason opener on Saturday, Aug. 13, head coach Frank Reich revealed on Wednesday, Aug. 10. Ryan is expected to play up to a full quarter.
Footballguys view: It's an interesting move for the Colts. Most starting quarterbacks won't play in the preseason opener. Ryan is going to get out there as he gets further used to his teammates. The Colts should run the heck out of the ball this year, so Ryan is mostly there to be a game manager. That means Fantasy GMs should look at him as a QB2 in 2022. We like getting Ryan around the QB17-23 range. |

Colts | Matt Ryan pushing the tempo Fri Jul 29, 10:46 AM
Indianapolis Colts QB Matt Ryan has focused on pushing a fast-paced tempo in practice, and the sessions have ended 10 minutes early each day.
Footballguys view: Ryan is all about timing and precision in his game. He's going to be demanding for the Colts receivers, but that's a good thing. They should run the ball early and often with RB Jonathan Taylor, but Ryan can use tempo as a weapon when the team has to pass the ball. From a fantasy perspective, we see him in the QB15-22 range. |

Colts | Matt Ryan in Indy's long-term plans? Sun May 1, 05:15 PM
Indianapolis Colts QB Matt Ryan is in the team's long-term plans, owner Jim Irsay said. 'We hope Matt can be here for four years, maybe,' Irsay said. 'We certainly have our radar out for a young guy that can be the long-term future.'
Footballguys view: How much longer can Ryan play at a high level? Is he going to be recharged with a fresh start in Indianapolis this season? These questions need to be considered before talking "long term" with Ryan. He'll turn 37-years old later this month, and Ryan may not have four years of starting caliber play left. Sure, Ryan is an upgrade over Carson Wentz but that's not saying much. |

Colts | Matt Ryan restructures Thu Mar 24, 12:29 PM
Indianapolis Colts QB Matt Ryan converted $12 million of his base salary into a signing bonus to free up $6 million in salary cap space Thursday, March 24. His cap number drops to $18,705,882.
Footballguys view: Ryan moves some of his money around so the Colts can have more maneuverability with the salary cap. It's not a shock this would happen given Ryan's contract structure. With Ryan in place at quarterback, the Colts can win a lot of games while pushing for the playoffs. With RB Jonathan Taylor, the Colts could be a tough out if they make the postseason. |

Colts | Matt Ryan has spices added to contract Tue Mar 22, 08:04 AM
Indianapolis Colts QB Matt Ryan's $7.5 million roster bonus was exercised, and guarantees were added to his deal that has nearly $54 million left over two years.
Footballguys view: The Colts got their man...well, they got the man they could after missing out on guys like Russell Wilson. They'll continue doing what they do as a team, and that should be enough to be in the playoff conversation. The Colts will run the ball often and play great defense. Ryan should be able to run the show efficiently with better talent around him than he had in Atlanta over the last couple of years. |

Colts | Indy land Matt Ryan for Day 2 pick Mon Mar 21, 01:44 PM
Updating a previous report, Atlanta Falcons QB Matt Ryan was traded to the Indianapolis Colts in exchange for a third-round draft pick Monday, March 21.
Footballguys view: The Colts missed out on previously available quarterbacks like Russell Wilson, so they make this deal to get Ryan for a good price. Ryan gets a huge upgrade in talent around him, and the Colts can compete for the AFC South title with the veteran under center. They'll run the ball, play great defense and if Ryan plays efficient football the Colts could win a lot of games - even in the brutal AFC. |

Footballguys view: We'll see what the future holds for Ryan. He could stay with the Falcons for one more year as the starter, or they could get Watson and then have to move him. A team like the Colts would likely put Ryan at the top of their list if he were to become available. |
