Falcons | M. Ryan throws three picks Week 8 Tue Nov 3, 12:57 AM
The Associated Press reports Atlanta Falcons QB Matt Ryan was 19-for-42 for 289 yards with a touchdown pass and three interceptions Week 8 against the New Orleans Saints.
| Our view: One of the picks came on a late hail mary, and another on a tipped ball when the Falcons were poised to take the lead in the fourth quarter. The Saints defense has embraced the opportunity to play aggressive and take risks because their offense is likely to bail them out if things go awry. |

Falcons | Ryan has rocky day Week 7 Sun Oct 25, 08:17 PM
The Associated Press reports Atlanta Falcons QB Matt Ryan went 19-for-35 for 198 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions in Week 7. He was sacked four times in the game and lost a fumble. He entered the game with a streak of 142 passes without a sack.
| Our view: Demarcus Ware had one of his best games of the season after it was revealed that he has a stress fracture in his foot during the week. |

Falcons | M. Ryan throws for 329 yards Week 5 Sun Oct 11, 08:25 PM
The Associated Press reports Atlanta Falcons QB Matt Ryan was 22-for-32 for 329 yards with two touchdown passes and an interception Week 5. He also ran for a one-yard score in the game.
| Our view: Matt Ryan connected early and often with Roddy White today and had two touchdown passes for the third time in four games. Ryan, like so many others today, was helped by long runs after the catch with his receivers taking advantage of a league-wide missed tackle epidemic. |

Ryan was sent home Monday, Sept. 7. Ryan should be fully healthy for Week 1.
| Our view: Falcons fans and fantasy owners are glad to see it was nothing major with Ryan. |

Falcons | Ryan continues solid preseason Sat Aug 29, 11:50 PM
Atlanta Falcons QB Matt Ryan had another strong preseason game Saturday, Aug. 29, hitting 14-of-20 passes for 140 yards and a touchdown against the San Diego Chargers.
| Our view: Ryan continues to gain momentum as one of the possible breakout players of 2009. Along with Carson Palmer, Matt Schaub, and Jay Cutler, he is a worthy QB1 if you wait until the seventh round or later to take your starter. |

Falcons | Ryan bigger, stronger and more comfortable in offense Thu Aug 27, 12:38 PM
D. Orlando Ledbetter, of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, reports Atlanta Falcons QB Matt Ryan is bigger, stronger and more athletic entering his second season in the NFL. He took to the weight room following last season. WR Roddy White said it has helped Ryan's arm, as he is now able to throw the ball further. Other players noted he also scrambles better this season. His growth has also come in the offense, according to WR Brian Finneran, who noted Ryan is more comfortable in the offense, calling plays and knows what to expect better.
| Our view: Matty Ice is becoming more comfortable in the NFL, and that is a bad thing for defenses trying to stop this Falcons offense. The team will run the ball effectively with Michael Turner leading the way, and because of that defenses have to key to stop the run. This opens things up for Matt Ryan deep to Roddy White, and new addition Tony Gonzalez should be able to do a lot of damage over the middle. |

Falcons | New and improved Matt Ryan Wed Aug 26, 09:41 PM
D. Orlando Ledbetter, of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, reports that Falcons QB Matt Ryan is stronger, more athletic, and more comfortable entering his second season. Atlanta WR Roddy White said, "He did a great job this offseason in the weight room. He can throw the ball farther. He can cut it loose. He's got a little more zip on his ball and everything."
| Our view: Ryan is rising on draft boards, but you can still land him in the QB8-12 range, as one of the last starters off the board. We still think his upside is capped by the presence of Michael Turner as a force in the red zone, but he's a fine choice as a starter as long as you take one of the first backups off the board like Matt Hasselbeck or David Garrard. |

Falcons | Ryan performs well Friday Sat Aug 22, 02:02 AM
The Associated Press reports Atlanta Falcons QB Matt Ryan was 7-for-8 for 81 yards with a touchdown pass over two series during the team's preseason game Friday, Aug. 21.
| Our view: If Ryan's going to have a sophomore slump this year, we can't see the signs of it so far. |

Falcons | Ryan feeling more comfortable Fri Aug 21, 03:23 PM
Chris Mortensen, of ESPN.com, reports Atlanta Falcons QB Matt Ryan said he feels more comfortable with the offense and his ability to read defenses. 'People don't realize when you're a rookie, it's really not reading defenses that throws you off as a rookie. It's getting the play in your ear, trying to call that play and get everything out, and then execute. It's tough and takes some time to learn and I'm lot more comfortable,' Ryan said.
| Our view: Some QBs that are successful in their rookie years have taken a step back in their sophomore year, but that is due at least in part to attitude, something that doesn't seem like a problem for Ryan. |

Falcons | Kirwan: Gonzalez 'good for 10 TDs', Ryan could throw 25-30 Fri Jul 24, 08:08 PM
Pat Kirwan, of NFL.com, when asked if he agreed with the idea that Atlanta QB Matt Ryan could throw 25-30 TDs, said "I could not agree with you more." Kirwan said that Ryan told him that the Falcons "are anticipating people experimenting with nickel looks which Matt knows how to get the ball to Gonzalez or others. I think Gonzalez is good for 10 TDs, and Ryan will be very hard to blitz in his second year, because of Tony's presence."
| Our view: Reducing the blitzed thrown at Ryan is a good thing, because he got worse against the blitz as the season went on. We still think it's going to be hard for Ryan to throw 25 TDs or Gonzalez to catch 10 unless the Falcons score significantly more than last year, and the team was 10th in scoring, so that will be hard. The main problem is that Michael Turner is so effective in the red zone that it makes it hard to him not to be the first option when they get inside the 10. |

Falcons | Ryan hit the weights in the offseason Mon Jul 20, 06:48 PM
Pat Kirwan, of NFL.com, reports that Atlanta QB Matt Ryan "must have lived in the weight room all offseason, because when he sat by me, it was clear he has changed his body."
| Our view: Kirwan invoked Tom Brady's name to show the importance of strength development early in a QB's career. Like Brady, Ryan does have some deep ball arm strength issues, so it sounds like he is doing everything he can to address them. |

Falcons | Ryan making strong strides entering second year Thu Jun 18, 08:17 AM
The Associated Press reports Atlanta Falcons players are raving about the improvement by second-year QB Matt Ryan. 'It's actually scary how much he's improved and it's only his second year,' FB Ovie Mughelli said. Ryan has improved in the weight room, how he reads plays and his arm strength. 'He's gotten better in every aspect,' Mughelli continued.
| Our view: Head coach Mike Smith said the team has focused on the passing game during their latest organized workouts. 'Matt is making good decisions and being accurate with the football,' Smith noted. 'I don't think those two traits can be overlooked.' According to Ryan, his No. 1 goal was making better decisions with the football and he has been watching a ton of film. |

Falcons | Ryan looking to improve Sun May 10, 11:11 AM
J. Michael Moore, of AtlantaFalcons.com, reports Atlanta Falcons QB Matt Ryan hopes to improve his decision making process in his second year. He is also looking to learn more from the coaching staff. Head coach Mike Smith said he thinks Ryan has been a lot more relaxed at minicamp and has a real good understanding of what the team wants to do as a team.
| Our view: Matt Ryan already shocked the league by having such a successful rookie season and leading the Falcons to the playoffs. That rapid start will have expectations even higher in his second season. Atlanta has opened a window to make a run at the championship but it all starts with the play of Matt Ryan. They added premier TE Tony Gonzalez to the roster and he should help Ryan immensely as fans, coaches, and Ryan himself start to expect more. |
Falcons | Ryan working with his new toy Fri May 8, 07:51 PM
D. Orlando Ledbetter, of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, reports Atlanta Falcons TE Tony Gonzalez made his debut with his new team during minicamp Friday, May 8. He was shaking off the rust and said he hadn't run anything since the Pro Bowl. 'Besides, my head was spinning a little bit from learning all of the language of this offense,' Gonzalez added. He has been catching passes from QB Matt Ryan since late April. Ryan acknowledged that he threw more passes to the tight end during Friday workouts. 'Anytime that you get a new toy, you want to try it out,' Ryan noted. 'I threw a couple of balls his way, and he didn't disappoint.'
| Our view: Fantasy owners need to take note here. Tony Gonzalez was already going to be one of the first fantasy TEs off the board, and these kind of reports may only push him higher. Matt Ryan went to his TE (Ryan Purvis) early and often when he was at Boston College. Opposing defenses will have a hard time picking their poison. Michael Turner will keep defenses honest and Gonzalez could have free reign over the deep middle of the defense. |

Lions | Stafford cashes in big Sat Apr 25, 07:59 AM
Kevin Seifert, of ESPN.com, reports the Detroit Lions gave QB Matthew Stafford almost a 30 percent raise over last year's top overall NFL Draft pick, Miami Dolphins OT Jake Long. Stafford's $41.7 million in guarantees was 17 percent more than the Atlanta Falcons gave QB Matt Ryan last year as the No. 3 overall pick.

Falcons | Peterson says Ryan reminds him of Manning Thu Apr 9, 01:12 PM
Pat Yasinskas, of ESPN.com, reports Atlanta Falcons LB Mike Peterson said QB Matt Ryan reminds him of a young Peyton Manning. 'I don't want to put any pressure on him,' Peterson said. 'But I've got to tell the truth. He reminds me of a young Peyton (Manning). I was with Peyton in Indianapolis early in my career and Matt is just like him. Matt's going to be a great one in this league for a long time to come. It's going to be fun to come off that field and watch him and that offense.'
