  Raiders | G. Russell likely team's No. 1 fullback    Wed Oct 21, 10:14 AM

Jerry McDonald, of ANG Newspapers, reports Oakland Raiders RB Gary Russell will likely be the team's new starting fullback after a strong performance in Week 6. Russell caught five passes for 55 yards but also provided strong blocking.

Footballguys view: The Raiders have found their fullback in Gary Russell. He's a strong and determined runner, but as he proved against the Eagles - he can also be used effectively as a receiver out of the backfield. Russell also has a good nose for the end zone, and could be used as the Raiders goalline back.

  Raiders | G. Russell re-signed    Wed Oct 7, 06:24 PM

Aaron Wilson, of the National Football Post, reports the Oakland Raiders have re-signed free-agent RB Gary Russell. Terms of the contract were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: With Darren McFadden out, the Raiders wanted to add some depth to their RB corps. Russell is unlikely to be much of a fantasy factor unless Michael Bush or Justin Fargas get hurt.

Rams | Gary Russell to visit the team    Tue Sep 8, 10:52 AM

Aaron Wilson, from the Carroll County Times, reports on his twitter feed that RB Gary Russell to visit Rams after being cut by Raiders, according to his agent Andy Simms.

Raiders | Announce roster moves    Sat Sep 5, 07:56 PM

Jerry McDonald, of ANG Newspapers, reports the Oakland Raiders have released S Jerome Boyd, WR Jonathan Holland, LB David Nixon, LB Slade Norris, LB Chris O'Neill, FB Marcel Reece, RB Gary Russell, LB Morlon Greenwood, CB Justin Miller, DT Ryan Boschetti, DT Terdell Sands, CB Darrick Brown, OT Seth Wand, OG Mark Wilson, OT James Marten, TE Darrell Strong and DE Greyson Gunheim. The Raiders have also waived injured FS Rashad Baker (stinger), CB Mike Hawkins (undisclosed) and C John Wade (stinger).

Footballguys view: Russell gets cut, and Louis Rankin gets to keep his job as the 4th string RB. These two RBs couldn't be more different. Rankin is a compact running back with big play ability. Russell is a plodding power back that has a nose for the endzone. Marcel Reece is a versatile player that could play fullback, tight end, or H-back, and he may find his way onto the Raiders practice squad.

Raiders | G. Russell could play some fullback    Sat May 9, 08:33 AM

Jerry McDonald, of InsideBayArea.com, reports Oakland Raiders head coach Tom Cable believes RB Gary Russell can play both running back and fullback for the team.

Footballguys view: With Oren O'Neal still recovering from a knee injury the Raiders decided to bring in Lorenzo Neal who has been one of the best blocking Fullbacks during his time in the league. Gary Russell could play some Fullback and could get some goalline carries from the upback position in the I-formation.

Raiders | G. Russell added    Fri May 8, 03:03 PM

Jerry McDonald, of InsideBayArea.com, reports the Oakland Raiders have signed free-agent RB Gary Russell (Bengals). Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: Gary Russell has had a crazy offseason after he scored a TD in the Super Bowl for the Pittsburgh Steelers. He was released by Pittsburgh because of salary cap reasons, he was promptly signed by the Bengals but then released a little bit later. Now he is with the Raiders and is buried on the depth chart behind Darren McFadden, Justin Fargas, and Michael Bush. He could latch on as the goalline back.
