The Dallas Cowboys are preparing for Week 1 against the New York Jets on the assumption TE Martellus Bennett (ankle) will not be available. The club's decision to keep TE Martin Rucker as a fourth tight end on the initial 53-man roster was a strong indication that Bennett would not be ready. The team will not rule out Bennett until later in the week, although it's unlikely he'll make enough progress to be cleared.

Eagles | Reid says Rucker practicing well Wed Dec 16, 03:52 PM
Philadelphia Eagles head coach Andy Reid said during his press conference Wednesday, Dec. 16, that TE Martin Rucker performed so well during practices that he deserved to be added to the active roster. Reid said Rucker is a very good receiver but was been working on his blocking since entering the league. Reid said Rucker did not make with the Cleveland Browns because the Browns could not wait for Rucker to develop.

Eagles | Rucker signed to practice squad Thu Sep 24, 11:37 AM
The Philadelphia Eagles have announced they have signed free-agent TE Martin Rucker (Browns) to their practice squad.
Footballguys view: Rucker is not much of a blocker, but is tall with surprising athleticism. He has not developed as a route runner since entering the NFL out of Mizzou, and does not explode off the snap. The Browns are desperate for help at the tight end position and they got rid of Rucker, so we're not expecting much from him now that he's with the Eagles. |

The Cleveland Plain Dealer reports Cleveland Browns head coach Eric Mangini said he believes TE Martin Rucker is coming on. 'He's going through the learning process and getting a lot of reps and learning the system,' Mangini said. Mangini feels Rucker has made some solid progress in his blocking. Rucker has spent extra time working with a sled to improve as a blocker.

Browns | Rucker hopes his time is now Thu Jul 16, 10:34 AM
Mike DeArmond, from the Kansas City Star, reports Rucker's prime competition for the starting tight-end job with the Browns seems to be free agent Robert Royal. And while Royal might teach Rucker a thing or two about blocking in the fashion of a traditional tight end, Royal's legacy with the Buffalo Bills was that he had hands of stone. Also in the mix should be veteran backup Steve Heiden. He, like Royal, is more of a retread than a new tire -- a comparison that didn't come from Rucker, by the way. "I hope it's my time," Rucker said.
Footballguys view: It might be Rucker's time to catch a few TDs and get in on third down, but Royal is too good a blocker for Rucker to unseat him as the starting TE. Rucker was never asked to be an inline blocker at Missouri, so he has a long way to go before he's an all-around TE that can play on every down. |

Browns | Rucker playing with first, second team Wed Jul 8, 07:23 PM
Zac Jackson, of ClevelandBrowns.com, reports that TE Martin Rucker got a lot of reps with the first and second-team units while Steve Heiden was sidelined during OTAs.
Footballguys view: Rucker is strictly a pass catching TE and he could evolve into the third option in the passing attack, but this is basically his rookie year because he was injured for a good part of 2008, so don't expect much in 2009. He could be a nice weapon in the red zone because of his size, but his production will likely be sporadic |

Browns | Rucker showing more polish, poise Tue Jun 30, 10:32 AM
Lane Adkins, of theOBR.com, reports that second year TE Martin Rucker has improved greatly from his rookie year during OTAs. He has displayed length, quickness, and the ability to go after the ball in the air while getting increased reps in place of Steve Heiden, who is recovering from knee surgery. Adkins speculates that Rucker's size could make him an option in the red zone and short-yardage passing situations.
Footballguys view: Rucker was drafted by the previous regime to be a receiving TE, and he seemed to have proved that he belongs to the new regime, so he should definitely be on your radar in deep dynasty leagues. He could be a marginal bye week/injury fill-in this year because starter Robert Royal is mainly a blocking TE. |
