Falcons | Evan Royster added    Sun Aug 16, 02:12 PM

Free-agent RB Evan Royster (Redskins) signed with the Atlanta Falcons Sunday, Aug. 16. Terms of the contract were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: Royster played under offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan in Washington. Tevin Coleman, Devonta Freeman, and Antone Smith are hurt and Terron Ward looked unimpressive in the preseason opener. Royster is merely competent at his best, but he could make the team and be poised to play a big role if the top backs can't get and stay healthy.

Redskins | Evan Royster not fast enough    Sat Aug 30, 10:24 AM

Free-agent RB Evan Royster's (Redskins) lack of speed and physicality were the main reasons why he was released by the Washington Redskins.

Footballguys view: They just determined this now? Everyone under the sun (outside of Washington) knew that Royster was a plodder coming out of Penn State. The sixth-round pick from the 2011 NFL draft could find a home somewhere.

Redskins | Evan Royster misses practice    Mon Jul 28, 04:30 PM

Washington Redskins RB Evan Royster (hamstring) did not participate in practice Monday, July 28, because of a strained hamstring. He was able to do some light work on the side with the trainers.

Footballguys view: Royster might be a fight for a roster spot with Chris Thompson, who has been drawing praise from the coaching staff. He needs to be out on the field.

Redskins | Evan Royster not practicing    Sun Jul 27, 09:15 AM

Washington Redskins RB Evan Royster (hamstring) is not participating in practice Sunday, July 27.

Footballguys view: Royster needs to stay healthy if he wants to make the roster. The team is looking for quality backups behind starter Alfred Morris this season. Roy Helu, Chris Thompson and Lache Seastrunk are all battling for position with Royster on the depth chart.

Redskins | Evan Royster injured    Sat Jul 26, 03:58 PM

Washington Redksins RB Evan Royster (hamstring) is considered day-to-day with a slight hamstring pull.

Footballguys view: Royster is not a burner, so a hamstring injury can really take away the little speed and burst he has. We'll see if he can be the RB3 for Washington this year. He'll face competition for the spot from the likes of Lache Seastrunk and Chris Thompson.

Redskins | Roy Helu may have advantage over Evan Royster    Mon Jul 21, 06:28 PM

Washington Redskins RB Roy Helu Jr. is seen as a better pass catcher than RB Evan Royster by some of the coaches, which should help his chance to make the final roster.

Footballguys view: Helu does have an advantage, especially under new head coach Jay Gruden. He's a fine receiver out of the backfield and has good run-after-the-catch ability.

Redskins | Robert Griffin to work out with some teammates    Mon Mar 17, 02:33 PM

Washington Redskins QB Robert Griffin III is scheduled to work out for some of team's skill position players next week in Arizona. Among the players that will take part in the workouts include RBs Alfred Morris, Evan Royster and Chris Thompson, WRs Pierre Garcon, Aldrick Robinson, Santana Moss, Andre Roberts and David Gettis and TE Jordan Reed.

Footballguys view: Griffin has to bounce back this year after a disappointing sophomore season. It's good that he's taking this offseason to show leadership skills. He could have a fine year under new head coach Jay Gruden.

Redskins | Evan Royster on the bubble    Thu Feb 6, 12:10 AM

Washington Redskins beat writer John Keim believes RB Evan Royster might be on the roster bubble if he cannot stay healthy. He played special teams, but it is not considered a strength. If the team elects to upgrade for special teams purposes, Royster might not make the club in 2014.

Footballguys view: Zero surprise here. Royster is a plodder who fails to move well. He's fallen out of favor with fantasy owners, and Washington could soon move on.

Redskins | Evan Royster could be on bubble    Wed Feb 5, 04:17 PM

Washington Redskins RB Evan Royster could be on the roster bubble next season unless he improves his special teams play. Royster likely would be the No. 3 running back and need to play on special teams if active.

Footballguys view: Zero surprise here. Royster is a plodder who struggles to produce when he's on the field. Washington could look to a guy like Chris Thompson as their RB3 behind Alfred Morris and Roy Helu.

The Washington Redskins have declared DL Chris Baker, RB Evan Royster, TE Fred Davis, SS Jose Gumbs, OG Josh LeRibeus, PK Kai Forbath, QB Rex Grossman inactive for Week 3.

Footballguys view: Logan Paulsen will start at tight end for the Redskins, but Jordan Reed will get most of the targets. He's a good pickup in very deep and TE premium leagues, and he's a solid desperation start this week.

Redskins | Three RBs competing for two spots    Wed Aug 28, 12:47 PM

Washington Redskins RBs Evan Royster, Chris Thompson and Keiland Williams appears to be battling for one or two roster spots, depending on how many running backs the team keeps. Offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan said the roster spots for reserve running backs remain 'up for grabs' heading into the preseason finale Thursday, Aug. 29. Thompson helps his cause, as he might be used in the punt return game.

Footballguys view: Thompson is the fastest and most explosive out of the three. The rookie has a good shot of making the final roster. Williams has better position versatility than Royster as he can play both fullback and running back.

Redskins | RB notes    Fri Jul 12, 12:47 PM

The Washington Redskins are sorting out their RB depth chart. Roy Helu seems like the best fit for changeup work, and he has improved in his pass protection. Evan Royster will have to be beaten out for his roster spot. Rookie Chris Thompson (knee) would be a solid fit for triple-option reads and third-down plays, as well, but he needs to heal following a torn anterior cruciate ligament. Plus, he needs to gain experience in picking up blitzes. Jawan Jamison, another first-year player, looks to be more in the mold of Royster.

Footballguys view: If he can stay healthy we'll likely see Helu win the backup job behind Alfred Morris. Royster is a bigger back who lacks the footwork to be more than a short yardage guy. Thompson is an exciting rookie from Florida State who can absolutely fly and change direction smoothly without losing much speed. If healthy he could make for a nice big play back.

Redskins | Four RBs likely to compete for roster spots    Sun May 19, 03:18 PM

Washington Redskins RBs Roy Helu, Evan Royster, Chris Thompson and Jawan Jamison are expected to compete for two roster spots during offseason workouts and training camp. Helu and Thompson are expected to compete for one spot while Royster and Jamison are expected to compete for the other roster spot.

Footballguys view: Helu is a good all-around back but injuries have prevented him from playing up to his potential. Thompson is a big play back who can score anytime he touches the ball. He has to prove he's back his knee surgery and is expected to be ready for contact by the start of training camp. Royster is the biggest back here, but lacks the balance and short area quicks of Jamison.

Redskins | Roy Helu could become No. 2 RB    Sat Apr 13, 01:48 PM

Washington Redskins RB Roy Helu could beat RB Evan Royster for the No. 2 running back job next season because of his speed and pass-catching ability.

Footballguys view: Helu has been held back by durability problems during his short pro career. If healthy he could easily be the RB2 for the Redskins because he's a better receiver and more explosive player than Royster.

Redskins | Alfred Morris can't find end zone    Sun Nov 4, 09:01 PM

Washington Redskins RB Alfred Morris carried 13 times for a game-high 76 yards in Week 9 against the Carolina Panthers. Fellow RB Evan Royster had four carries for just six yards, but he was able to score a rushing touchdown.

Footballguys view: Morris had a shoulder injury that cost him some snaps and he left the game when the Redskins went into desperation pass-heavy mode in the fourth quarter. Like Robert Griffin III, Morris has not put up great fantasy numbers the last two weeks even though he has mostly played well. The bye week rest will serve the hard-charging running back well. He's a good buy low over the week off.

Redskins | Keiland Williams signs    Tue Oct 23, 01:52 PM

The Washington Redskins signed free-agent RB Keiland Williams (Lions) Tuesday, Oct. 23, and released RB Ryan Grant in a corresponding move. Grant had only one carry for five yards.

Footballguys view: Williams gives the team more versatility at the RB position than Grant does. He could end up challenging Evan Royster to be the team's change of pace/third-down back behind Alfred Morris.

Redskins | Ryan Grant adds depth    Tue Sep 25, 07:41 PM

Washington Redskins RB Ryan Grant will add depth to the running back corps with RBs Evan Royster (knee, toe) and Roy Helu Jr. (toe) dealing with injuries. Royster is day-to-day with a strained patella tendon in his right knee, and he also aggravated a pre-existing turf toe injury. Helu is dealing with turf toe and had been limited with an injured Achilles' tendon in the preseason. Royster was limping around Monday, Sept. 24. Helu was wearing a walking boot following the team's Week 3 game, but he's listed as day-to-day, too.

Footballguys view: Grant is no threat to the starting job - yet. So long as Alfred Morris continues to run hard with stamina and not fumble he should keep hold of his spot on the depth chart. Grant gives the Redskins valuable veteran depth.

Redskins | Alfred Morris posts 89 rushing yards    Mon Sep 17, 02:47 AM

Washington Redskins RB Alfred Morris had 16 carries for a game-high 89 yards in Week 2 against the St. Louis Rams. RB Evan Royster had just one carry for four yards, and two catches for seven yards, while RB Roy Helu Jr. did not even have one carry, and he had one catch for no gain.

Footballguys view: Morris didn't fumble and ran hard. He was bottled up on a lot of runs, but would then break a 20-yard gain when the defense wasn't perfect. There's no reason to treat him as anything but the starter for this team going into week 3.

Redskins | Alfred Morris is the starting running back    Mon Sep 10, 03:18 PM

Washington Redskins head coach Mike Shanahan confirmed that RB Alfred Morris is the starting running back. Shanahan also said that he still believes in RBs Roy Helu and Evan Royster.

Footballguys view: Morris is the starter for now. We know Mike Shanahan can change his mind anytime, so the hold on the starting job is a tenuous one. Shop Morris around and sell him high if you fear the Shanahanigans that may occur at the position. Morris could have a good game against the Rams in week two.

Redskins | Roy Helu, Evan Royster have limited production    Sun Sep 9, 07:32 PM

Washington Redskins RB Roy Helu Jr. carried just two times for two yards in Week 1 against the New Orleans Saints, and he added three receptions for 25 yards. RB Evan Royster carried just two times for 10 yards.

Footballguys view: Alfred Morris is the man in Washington, but Robert Griffin III is a revelation, and that means the Redskins running game will remain productive all year. Pick up Helu or Royster if they get dropped in your league.

Redskins | Alfred Morris expected to start    Sun Sep 9, 10:53 AM

Washington Redskins rookie RB Alfred Morris is expected to start during Week 1 against the New Orleans Saints. Morris was the team's most impressive back during the preseason.

Footballguys view: Morris is still just a flex play because Mike Shanahan is fickle, but this is great news if you drafted the rookie out of Florida Atlantic. If you are in a matchup where you need big points out of your flex position, Morris is the ticket.

Redskins | Evan Royster still uncertain if he'll start    Mon Sep 3, 09:13 PM

Updating a previous report, despite being listed as the top tailback on the Week 1 depth chart released Monday, Sept. 3, RB Evan Royster is still unsure if he will be the starter against the New Orleans Saints. 'I think they're going to keep us pretty much in the dark until probably the day before the game,' Royster said.

Footballguys view: Sounds just like a Mike Shanahan move.

Redskins | Evan Royster listed as starter    Mon Sep 3, 05:13 PM

Washington Redskins RB Evan Royster is listed as the starting running back on the team's Week 1 depth chart.

Footballguys view: The Shanahanigans continue. Royster will split time with Roy Helu and Alfred Morris as the season goes along. There's fantasy value at the RB position in Washington but predicting who will be the primary back from week to week is maddeningly difficult.

Redskins | Mike Shanahan keeping RB starter secret    Sat Sep 1, 09:10 PM

Washington Redskins head coach Mike Shanahan indicated Saturday, Sept. 1, that he has settled on a starting running back for Week 1, but he is keeping it a secret. He said RBs Roy Helu Jr. and Evan Royster have made 'tremendous progession' in pass protection, so the starter is believed to be one of the two.

Footballguys view: Shanahan not using rookie Alfred Morris, but giving Helu and Royster a significant amount of work in the fourth preseason game seems to indicate otherwise. We won't start any Redskins back in week 1, but any of them could see a tremendous bump in value in week 2.

Washington Redskins head coach Mike Shanahan said RBs Evan Royster, Roy Helu, Tim Hightower and Alfred Morris still have a chance to win the starting running back job.

Footballguys view: Expect this story to be repeated multiple times during the regular season. Hightower has the most experience, Helu is arguably the most talented, Royster and Morris run with the most power and determination. What would fantasy football be without Shanahanigans?

Washington Redskins head coach Mike Shanahan said RBs Roy Helu (Achilles') and Evan Royster (knee) will not play in the third preseason game Saturday, Aug. 25, because of injuries.

Footballguys view: Without Helu and Royster in the lineup we'll see more from guys like Alfred Morris. There's some fantasy value to be mined here with the Washington RBs but we say just avoid the headache. The starter at the beginning of the year may not be the starter during the fantasy playoffs, and the lead RB may change every few weeks.

Redskins | Three set to play RB in preseason game    Thu Aug 16, 03:49 PM

Washington Redskins head coach Mike Shanahan announced that RBs Alfred Morris, Tristan Davis and Evan Royster will all get playing time in the team's preseason game Saturday, Aug. 18, against the Chicago Bears.

Footballguys view: The Shanahanigans continue. We really can't trust anyone in this backfield. Royster may be in line to begin the season as the starter but that could change multiple times during the year. There is fantasy value in the Redskins backfield because of the zone blocking system. Finding the right back to draft is a risky proposition.
