Cowboys | Romo throws for 251 yards in Week 10    Sun Nov 15, 08:16 PM

The Associated Press reports Dallas Cowboys QB Tony Romo went 24-for-39 for 251 yards, one touchdown and one interception in Week 10.

Our view: The Cowboys' passing offense was inconsistent in the face of strong coverage and pass rush from the Packers. Romo was inaccurate at times, but was also hurt by dropped passes and fumbles (his own and his wide receivers'). He was able to connect on a late touchdown pass and nearly had another that was intercepted by a diving defender at the goal line.

Cowboys | Romo says he is getting more comfortable with Williams    Thu Nov 12, 04:16 PM

Calvin Watkins, of ESPNDallas.com, reports Dallas Cowboys QB Tony Romo said he is getting more comfortable with WR Roy Williams. 'I was comfortable with him a week ago,' Romo said. 'It's about improving every day. [Just] because in the game it looked better, it didn't mean that we hadn't been practicing a certain way or that we weren't improving on the practice field.'

Cowboys | Romo throws for 307 yards Week 9    Mon Nov 9, 12:42 AM

The Associated Press reports Dallas Cowboys QB Tony Romo was 21-for-34 for 307 yards with a touchdown pass and an interception Week 9 against the Philadelphia Eagles.

Our view: Romo went until the fourth quarter before he hit Miles Austin with a pass, but it was for a touchdown. The Cowboys are on a roll, and largely due to the fact that Romo is playing much better in recent weeks. Even Roy Williams was more involved in the offense, and the passing game seems to be clicking on all cylinders.

Cowboys | Romo, Williams work after practice Wednesday    Thu Nov 5, 01:29 PM

Todd Archer, of The Dallas Morning News, reports Dallas Cowboys QB Tony Romo and WR Roy Williams worked on some things after practice Wednesday, Nov. 4, to try and improve their on-field chemistry. Williams said the two will continue to work after practice until they produce more during games.

Cowboys | Williams says he and Romo not close to connecting    Thu Nov 5, 09:44 AM

Tim MacMahon, of ESPNDallas.com, reports that Cowboys WR Roy Williams doesn't think he and QB Tony Romo are connecting yet. "It's just not even close," Williams said. "It's not even funny. Not even close." Williams said that passes to #2 WR Miles Austin are on target, but passes to him are off. "He gets the ball thrown correctly his way," Williams said of Austin. "I'm stretching and falling and doing everything. Everybody [else] who's been here's balls are there. Our footballs [from Romo to Williams] are everywhere right now."

Our view: More excuses from Williams. Romo might be off on some throws, but Williams is out of sync on some of those routes, and his game lacks the toughness, precision, and confidence that it had at the University of Texas and early in his pro career with the Lions. He is beginning to look like a washed up player, and sound like one, too.

Cowboys | Romo, R. Williams struggling to connect    Sun Nov 1, 06:49 PM

Todd Archer, of The Dallas Morning News, reports Dallas Cowboys QB Tony Romo targeted QR Roy Williams seven times Week 8, but they only connected twice for 19 yards, including a seven-yard touchdown. Williams said, "I don't know what it is. We worked early in the off-season, came in a month before everybody, throwing every day. He throws to me every day and it's just not there right now."

Cowboys | Romo throws three TD passes Week 8    Sun Nov 1, 05:08 PM

The Associated Press reports Dallas Cowboys QB Tony Romo was 21-for-36 for 256 yards with three touchdown passes Week 8 against the Seattle Seahawks. He has not thrown an interception in three consecutive games.

Our view: Romo had little trouble carving up the Seattle secondary, finding three wide receivers for touchdowns and connecting frequently with TE Jason Witten.

Cowboys | Romo targeting Austin    Sat Oct 31, 11:41 AM

Jean-Jacques Taylor, of The Dallas Morning News, reports Dallas Cowboys WR Miles Austin has been targeted 23 times by QB Tony Romo in the team's last two games.

Our view: Austin has clearly earned the trust of Tony Romo, and is always looking to make the most out of his receptions. He only needs to stay injury free in order to continue this hot streak.

Cowboys | Offense needs to target Williams more    Sat Oct 31, 11:35 AM

Jean-Jacques Taylor, of The Dallas Morning News, reports Dallas Cowboys QB Tony Romo has targeted WR Roy Williams on only 30 passes this season and never more than seven times in a game.

Our view: Why should Romo target Williams more often when all he does is drop passes? Williams has a serious case of alligator arms, and has not shown the willingness to go after a catch regardless of the circumstances. It's clear that Romo doesn't trust Williams, and until the career underachiever starts to make more plays he will continue to be left out of the offense.

Cowboys | Having problems in red zone    Fri Oct 23, 12:52 PM

Nick Eatman, of DallasCowboys.com, reports the Dallas Cowboys offense ranks 21st in touchdown conversion in the red zone this season, but QB Tony Romo does not think anything should be changed because the players just need to execute better. 'I think you just have to stay the course. The reality of it is we had some plays to be made. Myself, different personnel, different people. We just have to make a play, whether we hold up a block a little longer, or I throw it a little bit better. Someone catches it with a couple of people around there. That's part of executing. We've worked at doing that this last week and a half. Hopefully that will show this week,' Romo said.

The Associated Press reports Dallas Cowboys QB Tony Romo was 20-for-34 for 351 yards with two touchdown passes Week 5.

Our view: Romo and Miles Austin connected often for big plays with Roy Williams missing the game due to injury. The duo benefited from a number of missed tackles in the Kansas City secondary.

Cowboys | Romo still confident despite criticism    Fri Oct 9, 10:07 AM

The Associated Press reports Dallas Cowboys QB Tony Romo said he is still confident in himself and the team despite criticism from other people. 'There's a lot of hard work and effort and a lot of people beating you down. You have to have a stronger belief in yourself than the disbelief of others,' Romo said.

Our view: Romo is not in danger of losing his job, although there have been rumblings that Jon Kitna could replace him in the starting lineup. The Cowboys need to let Romo make plays, and not limit him to being a game manager. Improvisation is the best part of his game, and the team would see better production from him if they just let him play loose.

Cowboys | R. Williams says Romo is a leader    Sat Oct 3, 10:43 AM

Clarence E. Hill, Jr., of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, reports Dallas Cowboys WR Roy Williams said he appreciates QB Tony Romo as a leader. Williams credited Romo for keeping the offense's spirits high during Week 3, even though the unit struggled at times. 'We had some tough times, some tough drives and he could have went into the tank. If he goes into the tank, this whole offense is going into the tank. He stood in there, held his head high, even though we had all the penalties and we were punting every series it felt like. He stayed in there and led this team down the football field and I really appreciate that out of a guy like that,' Williams said. 'That's what I think a leader is. I could care less about guys who are rah-rah all day long. Show me on the football field. He doesn't say anything. He doesn't have to say anything. All his stuff is on the football field.'

Cowboys | Owner remains behind Romo    Wed Sep 23, 09:25 AM

Tom Orsborn, of the San Antonio Express-News, reports Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said during his weekly radio show that he remains committed to QB Tony Romo despite a poor Week 2 performance. 'We have all the confidence in the world in Tony Romo,' Jones said. Jones believes Romo has an ability to bounce back from tough games.

Our view: Normally we'd say this is the "dreaded vote of confidence", but the Cowboys really have nowhere to turn at QB, with aging vet Jon Kitna and raw rookie Stephen McGee as the only other QBs on the roster.

Cowboys | Romo throws three picks Week 2    Mon Sep 21, 12:58 AM

The Associated Press reports Dallas Cowboys QB Tony Romo was 13-for-29 for 127 yards with a touchdown and three interceptions during the team's Week 2 game. Romo also ran for a three-yard touchdown in the game. It was Romo's fewest passing yards in a full game and his passer rating of 29.6 was the second-lowest of his career.

Our view: The Giants have one of the most fierce pass rushes in the game today, and Romo was harassed all game long. He's in no danger of losing his job, but he'll have to start winning big games to shed his current reputation as a player that fades when the spotlight is on.

Our view: The ankle injury didn't stop Romo from having a great opener to the regular season. Romo only ran the ball one time, but the Cowboys had so many big scoring plays on offense they weren't on the field that much.

The Associated Press reports Dallas Cowboys QB Tony Romo (ankle) said he injured his ankle during the team's Week 1 game and will have it examined Monday, Sept. 14.

Our view: It's hard to imagine that Romo's ankle surgery would cause him to miss time.

The Associated Press reports Dallas Cowboys QB Tony Romo went 16-for-27 for 353 yards and three touchdowns in the team's Week 1 game.

Our view: We would like to say that this is evidence that the effects of the loss of Terrell Owens were exaggerated, but there were numerous breakdowns in the Tampa secondary that led to big plays. This is encouraging for Romo, but these plays were more the result of Tampa's shortcomings than Romo's playmaking ability.

Cowboys | Williams still working on chemistry with Romo    Sat Aug 22, 02:27 PM

Tim MacMahon, of The Dallas Morning News, reports Dallas Cowboys WR Roy Williams said he is still working on building chemistry with QB Tony Romo. 'We're still a work in progress. He's still getting to know me, and I'm still getting to know him,' Williams said.

Our view: Williams was targeted seven times, and caught five of them... for 36 yards. We don't expect Williams to be the big play threat he was earlier in his career, and he won't catch more than 70-75 balls unless Jason Witten suffers a serious injury. He's a low-end WR2 at best this year even though some will draft him as high as the third round.

Cowboys | Romo-to-Williams starting to click    Thu Aug 6, 10:24 AM

The Associated Press reports that Dallas QB Tony Romo and WR Roy Williams had their best practice on the eighth day of camp, Wednesday, August 5. According to the report, they "hooked up repeatedly on tough plays in the morning", but weren't quite as sharp in the afternoon. "It's feeling real good," Williams said. "It's only a matter of time before it starts clicking. You'll look and see and we'll have turned the page." Head coach Wade Phillips was also pleased with the timing that Williams and Romo are developing.

Our view: With all of the reports of the likely breakout season for Martellus Bennett and the possible prevalence of the two TE set in Dallas, we are tempering our already cautious expectations for Williams. He has been injury-prone and inconsistent throughout his career, and we don't think he's worth taking as your WR2. Don't get too swayed by reports like these.

Cowboys | Romo/Williams chemistry a work in progress    Sat Aug 1, 10:27 PM

Tim McMahon, from the Dallas Morning News, reports Romo's chemistry with Williams continues to be a work in progress. During today's two practices, Romo targeted Williams three times in competitive action (team and 7-on-7 drills), completing one pass for about 10 yards. "It just takes time together," said Kitna, the Lions' quarterback during Williams' lone Pro Bowl campaign. "Roy is different, looking at him. When you go to throw to him, he's different. He's big, but he's long big, so it can look a little different. When you first start working with him, you end up missing behind him a lot, because you don't realize how much ground he can cover without taking a lot of steps. He maybe doesn't look like he's moving fast, but he is because he's long. It just comes with time. They've put in the time. Now it's time to do it with defense. This is just another part of the evolution."

Our view: Many are expecting big things from this Dallas duo, and there may be a few games where they are both in sync. However, Williams is a career underachiever and already seems to be feeling the pressure in Big D. When all is said and done Williams could put up some nice numbers, but figuring out which week to start him may be maddening for fantasy owners.

Cowboys | Romo taking leadership role    Wed Jul 29, 07:00 PM

Todd Archer, of the Dallas Morning News, reports that QB Tony Romo has taken a leadership role on the Cowboys this offseason. Head coach Wade Phillips compared Romo to Jim Kelly and John Elway, saying Romo is "similar in that he was at every workout during the offseason, and the rest of the players look at that, and if you have anybody slacking off during the offseason you can go to them and say, 'Look, Tony Romo is out there working; you need to be working.' That really helps with your football team."

Our view: This sounds like offseason fluff, but at least it addresses the main concern about Romo, his ability to lead the team.

NFL | Fitzgerald hosting WR camp     Thu Jul 16, 03:53 PM

Jim Trotter, of SI.com, reports Arizona Cardinals WR Larry Fitzgerald is hosting a wide receiver camp in Minnesota and has invited several other NFL players to participate in the camp, which has had former NFL WRs Jerry Rice and Cris Carter as instructors. Among the wide receivers that have been participating are Denver Broncos WR Brandon Marshall, Buffalo Bills WR Lee Evans, Green Bay Packers WR Greg Jennings, Tampa Bay Buccaneers WR Michael Clayton, Minnesota Vikings WR Sidney Rice and Cleveland Browns WR Brian Robiskie. Washington Redskins CB DeAngelo Hall, New Orleans Saints CB Malcolm Jenkins, Pittsburgh Steelers TE Matt Spaeth, Arizona Cardinals TE Dominique Byrd and St. Louis Rams LB James Laurinaitis also are attending the camp. Dallas Cowboys QB Tony Romo may attend the camp next week.

Our view: Fitzgerald, Jennings, Marshall, and Evans are some of the best wide receivers in the game today so it's nice to see them competing against each other in order to get better. With Jerry Rice and Cris Carter giving pointers the young wideouts can only improve their games. It will be interesting to see if guys like Michael Clayton or Sidney Rice can become consistent receivers in the NFL because of this "All Star" camp they're attending.

Scott Noll, of The Dallas Morning News, reports Dallas Cowboys FS Ken Hamlin said during a television interview that QB Tony Romo has been working on becoming a more vocal leader and has been more vocal during offseason workouts.

Our view: Both Wade Phillips and Tony Romo are trying to be more vocal in 2009. This could work out for both of them, but it could also be too little too late.   Giants | Jacobs not impressed with Romo    Mon Jul 13, 03:55 PM

Ralph Vacchiano, of the New York Daily News, reports New York Giants RB Brandon Jacobs said during a radio interview that he does not believe Dallas Cowboys QB Tony Romo is a good pocket passer or a good overall passer. 'I think if you were to keep Tony Romo in the pocket, he's not that effective. That's what I think,' Jacobs said. 'But if you let him run around and everybody thinking 'Is he gonna run? Is he gonna pass?' then I think he's effective. Because he is athletic and he can run and he can beat you there. But if you keep him in the pocket, I don't think he can beat you from the pocket. I don't think he's that great of a passer, to be honest with you.'

Our view: Romo actually does most of his damage from within the pocket and we think Jacobs just wanted to ruffle some feathers on his NFC East rivals. There are questions about Romo's ability to win in December and January, but Dallas certainly counts every game against the Giants as a big game.

Cowboys | Romo-Williams relationship a work in progress    Mon Jul 13, 02:12 PM

Tim MacMahon, of The Dallas Morning News, reports Dallas Cowboys QB Tony Romo and WR Roy Williams put in a lot of extra offseason work together. There were some encouraging signs of chemistry between the two during OTAs and minicamp, but there was also ample evidence that their relationship is a work in progress.

Our view: If you look at the tape from last year there seems to be a lot of work needed on their relationship. Williams was less than impressive his first season with the Cowboys, but T.O. is now in Buffalo and Williams is expected to be the leading wide receiver in 2009. Jason Witten will forever be Romo's favorite target, but Williams could strengthen the chemistry with his QB if he stops dropping easy passes. This outcome will help define the Cowboys season because an underachieving Williams would be hurtful to the offense.

Cowboys | Time for Romo to shine    Wed Jul 8, 12:15 PM

Jim Corbett, from USA Today, notes that with Terrell Owens gone to Buffalo it's time for Tony Romo to shine on the field. A glitzy, new, $1 billion-plus football palace in Arlington, Texas, called Cowboys Stadium will showcase a remodeled Cowboys team with one unquestioned offensive leader: Romo. Owner Jerry Jones drove home that point when he released Owens in March, saying it was with the intention of making his 2009 offense more "Romo-friendly."

Our view: One way the Cowboys could be more "Romo-friendly" is to feature a more run heavy offense and take some of the burden off the quarterback's shoulders. If Marion Barber, Felix Jones, and Tashard Choice can stay healthy it will go a long way towards the success of the franchise in 2009. The WR depth chart is up in the air after Roy Williams but it will become clear as we go through the preseason. Jason Witten is Romo's best friend and most trusted target on the field, but don't count out TE Martellus Bennett who could play a bigger role than people expect.

Cowboys | Owens says he was a scapegoat    Thu Jun 25, 07:19 PM

Clarence E. Hill Jr., of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, reports former Dallas Cowboys WR Terrell Owens, currently with the Buffalo Bills, said he became a scapegoat for Cowboys QB Tony Romo's lack of leadership. Owens said, "He was the quarterback of the team. I think everybody realized that. It was upon him to adopt that leadership role and carry that out. Obviously, they saw that didn't happen. So, for whatever reason, I'll be the scapegoat. I'm not here. Now, it's his team. I wish him well." Owens also said he has not talked to owner Jerry Jones since he was released from the Cowboys in March.

Our view: Owens has had a persecution complex for a long time now, so these comments should come as no surprise. Still, they fit in with incidents like Romo going to the beach with Jessica Simpson during the playoffs and his general "too laid back" personality for an NFL quarterback.

Cowboys | Palmer believes Kitna can help Romo    Wed Jun 24, 04:56 PM

Tim MacMahon, of The Dallas Morning News, reports Cincinnati Bengals QB Carson Palmer said during a radio interview that Dallas Cowboys QB Tony Romo would have a big year if he listens to QB Jon Kitna this season because he can help him in several areas.

Our view: Kitna will make a much better backup for Tony Romo than Brad Johnson did last year. Unlike Johnson, Kitna can still throw the football more than 10 yards and is looking forward to being a mentor for Romo. Last season Johnson made it clear that his job was to be the backup - not a teacher. Romo has his fair share of doubters, so we're fairly certain that he'll listen to the veteran Kitna and pick up some helpful pointers along the way.

Michael Silver, of Yahoo! Sports, reports Dallas Cowboys executive vice president Stephen Jones said the reason the team released WR Terrell Owens was because as long as he was on the team, QB Tony Romo would not be an influential leader.

Our view: 'A lot of our players thought the world of Terrell --- they still do. They loved the way he prepared and how hard he played, and everybody respected his skills and what he'd done in the league. And with him here, I think he was always going to carry that kind of weight,' Jones said.

Cowboys | Romo denies report on his conditioning    Wed Jun 17, 07:39 PM

Mac Engel, of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, reports Dallas Cowboys QB Tony Romo denied Wednesday, June 17, any notion that he had been told to get into better shape in a meeting with offensive coordinator Jason Garrett earlier in the week.

Our view: Romo said, "If there's anything those guys tell me, it's to throttle back sometimes just because I do a lot of running playing soccer and basketball and stuff to stay in shape, plus the stuff we do." He added that no such meeting occurred.

Cowboys | Romo told to be in better shape    Wed Jun 17, 10:15 AM

Jennifer Floyd Engel, of Fort Worth Star-Telegram, reports Dallas Cowboys offensive coordinator Jason Garrett reportedly told QB Tony Romo this offseason to be in better shape so that he could sustain his production for an entire season. Cowboys coaches believe Romo has a penchant for showing up for training camp in just good enough shape to allow him to get out to a good start in the first half. Romo, however, has not been able to outrun the same players in the second half of seasons, in addition to committing more turnovers.

Our view: Romo is known to struggle in big games, especially those in the playoffs. While getting in better shape isn't a guarantee for postseason success, it certainly can't hurt Romo's outlook for 2009.

Cowboys | Romo building chemistry with Williams    Wed Jun 17, 10:12 AM

The Associated Press reports Dallas Cowboys QB Tony Romo said he and WR Roy Williams have been working together throughout the offseason are continuing to build chemistry with each other. 'Oh, we're close. There's still little things, still routes,' Romo said. 'It's not just about running a route on air. It's about different coverages you're going to see and how you're going to come out of your break. It's our first full season together.'

Our view: Last season it seemed like Roy Williams and Tony Romo weren't on the same page when it was game time. It's good to hear that they're dedicating time to working together and building chemsitry, but we want to see it on the field before we get too excited about this duo. Roy Williams has been an underachiever during his entire career, and regardless of the new chemistry will still be Romo's 2nd favorite target behind Jason Witten.

Hill Jr., of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, reports Dallas Cowboys QB Tony Romo and WR Roy Williams are still dealing with miscommunication and visible signs of frustration when they are unable to connect during practice. Williams barked at Romo Monday, June 15, after a pass didn't come his way when he was open. Williams said, "I was frustrated and I let him know, but that's what we're supposed to do. This is our job. His job is to deliver the ball. My job is to catch it and get open. That's how you win, and that's all I want to do.

Our view: Romo tried to downplay it, saying they were "close", but "there's still little things." Of course, one of those little things was route running. Williams also said he's willing to become Romo's "best friend", including telling him "his girlfriend looks good". His sense of humor about the situation tells us it's not too serious... yet.

Cowboys | Practice Wildcat formation Thursday    Thu Jun 4, 03:28 PM

Tim MacMahon, of The Dallas Morning News, reports the Dallas Cowboys worked in the Wildcat formation during practice Thursday, June 4.

Our view: The Cowboys call this the "Razorback." WR Patrick Crayton lined up behind center in the shotgun with RB Felix Jones motioning across the formation and QB Tony Romo split out wide. Jones has experience in this kind of formation from his college days at Arkansas where he and Darren McFadden torched defenses on a weekly basis.
