Colts | Indy reached out to Philip Rivers Thu Dec 30, 02:06 PM
The Indianapolis Colts head coach Frank Reich reached out to retired QB Philip Rivers to gauge his interest in playing one game for the team with QB Carson Wentz (illness) on the Reserve/COVID-19 list. Ultimately, QB Sam Ehlinger will get the start in Week 17 if Wentz is unable to play. 'I think Sam is made for moments like this,' Reich said. 'He has that special it factor. Has really good quarterback skills, has continued to improve. Excited about the opportunity this week to prepare, and we'll see how the week plays out.'
Footballguys view: Ehlinger is a gamer who gets more out of his traits than he should, but he won't be anything but a desperation play if he starts against the Raiders. |

Saints | Philip Rivers would answer a call from Saints Tue Nov 2, 06:17 PM
Retired NFL QB Philip Rivers (Colts) told the the LA Times' Sam Farmer he would listen if the New Orleans Saints reached out about replacing injured QB Jameis Winston (knee). No one from the organization has contacted him, however, according to Rivers.
Footballguys view: There are a couple of veteran quarterbacks out there available to the Saints if they so choose. Rivers and Cam Newton could be "in case of emergency, break glass" type of quarterbacks but at this time it seems like the Saints are going to roll with Trevor Siemian and/or Taysom Hill as their starter. |

NFL | Philip Rivers not done yet with football? Tue Aug 3, 10:24 PM
Free-agent QB Philip Rivers told Sam former of the Los Angeles Times on Tuesday, Aug. 3, that he 'isn't closing the door on coming back for a stint late in the season if there is an NFL team that needs him.'

Colts | Philip Rivers retires Wed Jan 20, 09:25 AM
Indianapolis Colts QB Philip Rivers announced his retirement Wednesday, Jan. 20.
Footballguys view: It didn't take long for Rivers to decide that 17 seasons was enough. He still had something left in the tank, but Rivers is now going to coach high school football in Alabama. Rivers finishes his career having passed for over 63,000 yards and 421 passing touchdowns, so expect to see him in the Hall of Fame someday. The Colts are likely to lose Jacoby Brissett in free agency, so they're 100 percent in the quarterback market both in free agency and the draft. |

Colts | Philip Rivers may avoid surgery Fri Jan 15, 02:26 AM
Indianapolis Colts QB Philip Rivers (toe) should be fine without surgery on his injured toe, according to GM Chris Ballard, who added that if Rivers does go the surgical route it would be 'nothing major.'
Footballguys view: Good news for the veteran quarterback here. The Colts and Rivers are going to give things about a month before talking about whether or not Rivers will continue to play for the Colts or move on in free agency. Rivers still has the ability to be a slightly above average starter. |

Colts | Phillip Rivers has GM's backing Thu Jan 14, 01:17 PM
Indianapolis Colts QB Philip Rivers met with the general manager Chris Ballard for an hour earlier this week, Ballard said Thursday, Jan. 14, as Rivers heads into the offseason pondering his future. 'Do I think Philip can still play? Absolutely,' Ballard said. 'He's going to take some time, and we're going to take some time. We'll meet again in about a month.'
Footballguys view: Unlike his draft classmate Ben Roethlisberger, Rivers did not look washed up this season. The Colts are looking for a young franchise quarterback to take over but bringing back Rivers for one more go would make sense. |

Colts | Philip Rivers uncertain about future Sat Jan 9, 06:42 PM
Indianapolis Colts QB Philip Rivers said he is not sure if he will play next season.
Footballguys view: Rivers played some good football at times this season. He led the Colts to the playoffs and it came down to the last throw against the Bills. Rivers is not washed up and he's set to be a free agent this offseason. The Colts will want to know his plans ASAP so they can make their own plans at quarterback. |

Colts | Indianapolis out of playoffs Sat Jan 9, 05:29 PM
Indianapolis Colts QB Philip Rivers went 27-for-46 for 309 yards and two touchdowns against the Buffalo Bills in the Wild Card playoff game. RB Jonathan Taylor rushed for 78 yards and one touchdown on 21 carries, while RB Nyheim Hines rushed for 75 yards on six carries. WR Michael Pittman Jr. caught five passes for 90 yards on 10 targets, TE Jack Doyle caught seven passes for 70 yards and one touchdown on nine targets, WR Zach Pascal caught three passes for 37 yards and one touchdown on five targets and WR T.Y. Hilton caught two passes for 32 yards on five targets.
Footballguys view: The Colts fought hard in this game. They did enough on offense, especially with Taylor rushing the rock. A missed field goal and a failed fourth-and-goal attempt could have turned this thing in the Colts favor. We'll now have to see if Rivers is going to come back as the team's starter for another year in 2021. |

Colts | Philip Rivers ready to play Thu Jan 7, 09:58 PM
Indianapolis Colts QB Philip Rivers (toe) fully participated in practice Thursday, Jan. 7, and is not on the injury report for the Wild Card playoff game.
Footballguys view: The Colts are set to feed rookie RB Jonathan Taylor as much as possible. That will set up play-action passing for Rivers and his receiving weapons. The Bills secondary can be tricky to go up against, but Rivers has no fear. |
