Chargers | Rivers throws two TD passes Week 10    Sun Nov 15, 07:46 PM

The Associated Press reports San Diego Chargers QB Philip Rivers was 20-for-25 for 231 yards with two touchdown passes Week 10 against the Philadelphia Eagles.

Our view: The Eagles seemed to gameplan to take Vincent Jackson away from Rivers. Behind good pass protection, Rivers found Antonio Gates and Legadu Naanee open in space often.

Chargers | Rivers throws three TD passes Week 9    Sun Nov 8, 08:21 PM

The Associated Press reports San Diego Chargers QB Philip Rivers was 24-for-36 for 205 yards with three touchdown passes and two interceptions Week 9 against the New York Giants.

Our view: Rivers calmly led the offense down the field after the defense held the Giants to a field goal in the fourth quarter, capping the drive with a TD pass to Vincent Jackson with less than thirty seconds left.

The Associated Press reports San Diego Chargers QB Philip Rivers was 18-for-30 for 268 yards with three touchdown passes Week 7 against the Kansas City Chiefs.

Our view: Rivers hooked up with Vincent Jackson early and often on the way to a very good game.

Broncos | Defense pressures Rivers often in Week 6    Tue Oct 20, 09:48 AM

The Associated Press reports the Denver Broncos defense sacked San Diego Chargers QB Philip Rivers five times in Week 6, including three times in the fourth quarter.

Our view: The Broncos overwhelmed Philip Rivers, and wore down the offensive line towards the end of the game. LaDainian Tomlinson struggled picking up the blitz, and the Broncos constantly attacked the "A" gaps because they knew the Chargers weren't going to run against them.

Chargers | Rivers throws for 303 yards Week 3    Mon Sep 28, 02:14 AM

The Associated Press reports San Diego Chargers QB Philip Rivers was 18-for-33 for 303 yards during the team's Week 3 game against the Miami Dolphins. He ran for a five-yard touchdown in the game, the second rushing touchdown of his career.

Our view: Rivers touchdown run looked like it was in slow motion. He's not the fastest quarterback in the league, but was able to take advantage of the Dolphins unsuspecting defense. Before he was drafted, Rivers was timed at the scouting combine on a sun dial.

Chargers | Rivers has ice wrap around chest after Week 3 game    Sun Sep 27, 09:30 PM

Kevin Acee, of the San Diego Union-Tribune, reports San Diego Chargers QB Philip Rivers (chest) drove home after the team's Week 3 game with an ice wrap around his chest. Rivers said he just took "some licks," and got the wind knocked out of him.

Our view: Rivers seems to be dismissing the injury as a minor issue. Check back for followup after the early week press conferences and midweek practice reports.

Chargers | Rivers throws for 436 yards Week 2    Sun Sep 20, 09:38 PM

The Associated Press reports San Diego Chargers QB Philip Rivers was 25-for-45 for a career-high 436 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions Week 2 against the Baltimore Ravens.

Our view: Rivers hurt the Raven defense with multiple downfield pass plays but the Chargers weren't able to pull out the win. The big plays came from every angle on offense, a long catch and run from Darren Sproles and multiple big plays for WR Vincent Jackson and TE Antonio Gates. With his many weapons, Rivers should remain a strong QB1 all season long.

Chargers | Rivers fined    Sat Sep 19, 10:20 AM

The Associated Press reports the National Football League has fined San Diego Chargers QB Philip Rivers $7,500 for taunting during the team's Week 1 game.

Our view: This will only add to Rivers reputation as an overemotional player.

Chargers | Rivers throws for 252 yards Week 1    Tue Sep 15, 02:46 AM

The Associated Press reports San Diego Chargers QB Philip Rivers was 24-for-36 for 252 yards with a touchdown pass and an interception during the team's Week 1 game.

Our view: Rivers was thwarted most of the night by an aggressive Oakland pass rush going against a hobbled offensive line, but he came through at the end for Chargers fans, and he salvaged a decent game for his fantasy owners.

Chargers | Rivers continues effective preseason    Sat Aug 29, 11:43 PM

San Diego Chargers QB Philip Rivers had another good preseason game Saturday, Aug. 29. He hit 10-of-15 passes for 185 yards and a touchdown. It was previously believed that Rivers would play into the third quarter, but the coaching staff must have liked what they saw out of him because he left the game for good during the second quarter.

Our view: The Chargers have had trouble running the ball, so the offense could be going through Rivers for the second straight season. Even with his great numbers last year, he could still be a value this year.

Chargers | Rivers contract update    Sat Aug 29, 09:43 AM

Kevin Acee, of the San Diego Union-Tribune, reports San Diego Chargers QB Philip Rivers will earn $38.15 million fully guaranteed and a possible $99.25 million over the next seven years as part of his recent contract extension. The deal included a $19.55 million signing bonus, which will be prorated over the life of the contract, and a $6 million option bonus. The option bonuses will be paid out over in $1.2 million increments over the first five years of the six-year extension, which begins next year. Rivers will receive base salaries of $6 million in 2009, $6.6 million in 2010, $8.4 million in 2011, $10.2 million in 2012, $12 million in 2013, $13.8 million in 2014 and $15.75 million in 2015. The last year of the extension is actually an option year that must be exercised by the team in 2010 or Rivers' base salaries through 2014 are increased.

Our view: This deal sets the baseline for the deals Peyton Manning and Tom Brady will get next year.

Chargers | Rivers sacked four times    Sun Aug 23, 11:56 AM

The Associated Press reports San Diego Chargers QB Philip Rivers played in a little more than 1 1/2 quarters Saturday, Aug. 22, against the Arizona Cardinals and completed was 5-for-7 with 116 yards passing and no touchdowns. However, he was sacked four times during the game.

Our view: Rivers was sacked four times in the first seven times he dropped back. Luckily for him, the Cardinals put their second-team defense in during the second quarter, and Rivers was able to move the offense.

Chargers | Using Wildcat in practice    Wed Aug 12, 09:54 AM

Kevin Acee, of the San Diego Union-Tribune, reports the San Diego Chargers have been working on the Wildcat offense during practice, or as the team labels it, the Frog offense. In one version of the formation, QB Philip Rivers lined up wide right. WR Vincent Jackson went in motion, and RB LaDainian Tomlinson took the shotgun snap and ran through the line.

Our view: Ladainian Tomlinson is probably the best passing RB in the NFL history, so it makes sense to use him in this capacity.

Chargers | Extension talks with Rivers could begin soon    Thu Aug 6, 02:07 PM

Kevin Acee, of the San Diego Union-Tribune, reports the San Diego Chargers could start contract extension talks with QB Philip Rivers in the near future since the other two first-round quarterbacks in his draft class have already received extensions.

Our view: It seems like Rivers has earned just about the same money Eli Manning and Ben Roethlisberger have gotten even though he hasn't won a ring (yet).

Chargers | Rivers sporting brace on knee    Mon Aug 3, 02:10 AM

Kevin Acee, of The San Diego Union-Tribune, reports San Diego Chargers QB Philip Rivers wore a brace on his right knee during practice Sunday, Aug. 2. Rivers said he plans to wear it during the season for extra protection.

Our view: Rivers wore the brace last season, so there's no reason to think it would adversely affect his game.

Chargers | Rivers entering contract year    Sun Jun 14, 01:54 PM

Nick Canepa, of The San Diego Union-Tribune, reports San Diego Chargers QB Philip Rivers is scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent at the end of the 2009 season. Re-signing him has become a priority for the Chargers.

Our view: This is a no-brainer even though Billy Volek performed admirably when Rivers was hurt during the 2007-08 playoffs. They'd be wise to not let this linger into the regular season.
