NFL | Trent Richardson playing in AAF    Fri Feb 8, 09:22 PM

Free-agent RB Trent Richardson (Ravens) has signed to play with the Memphis Express of the Alliance of American Football.

Footballguys view: Richardson was a bust in the NFL as the 3rd overall pick in the 2012 NFL draft. He last played in the NFL in 2016, but that was only in the preseason with the Ravens. Richardson (and others) are trying to showcase their talent and perhaps resurrect their careers in the AAF. We'll be monitoring all in the new league.

Ravens | Trent Richardson could return to Ravens    Wed Aug 3, 08:15 AM

Updating a previous report, free-agent RB Trent Richardson (Ravens) was cut to create a spot for a receiver, and the Baltimore Ravens could re-sign him.

Footballguys view: The Ravens did sign a running back after this item - size/speed Indiana product Stephen Houston. Perhaps they can re-sign Richardson later, but only because it doesn't appear any other team is going to show interest in him.

Ravens | Trent Richardson waived    Tue Aug 2, 03:19 PM

Baltimore Ravens RB Trent Richardson was waived Tuesday, Aug. 2. Free-agent WR Chuck Jacobs was subsequently signed.

Footballguys view: We can't see Richardson landing with another team. When he wasn't overweight, he wasn't trying...or he was hurt. Richardson's pro career seemed on track after a near 1,000-yard rushing season with the Browns as a rookie in 2012. Then he was traded to the Colts, and it's been all downhill since then. His time in the NFL is likely over, and Richardson will go down as one of the biggest draft busts at the RB position in NFL history.

Ravens | Three Ravens RBs sit out    Fri Jul 29, 09:38 AM

Baltimore Ravens RB Kenneth Dixon (knee), RB Trent Richardson (knee) and RB Lorenzo Taliaferro (foot) are out of practice Friday, July 29.

Footballguys view: Terrance West revived his career with the Ravens last year, and the injury situation at running back so far in camp should give him a chance to build more momentum and make the team as the fourth running back this year.

Ravens | Justin Forsett expects to be bell cow    Wed Jul 27, 10:01 PM

Baltimore Ravens RB Justin Forsett expects to hang onto the starting job and do the bulk of the work at the running back position ahead of RBs Javorius Allen, Kenneth Dixon, Lorenzo Taliaferro and Terrance West. The team also has RB Trent Richardson (knee) competing for a roster spot. While Forsett might be optimistic, he is 31 and the team is leaning toward reducing his carries.

Footballguys view: Forsett seems to have recovered from his broken arm, but that age is a concern to some. The veteran back has low mileage on his body as he didn't start getting a large workload in the pros until a couple of years ago. As the Ravens will reduce his carries a little we expect him to be more of an RB3 than the RB2 he might be if he got 20-25 carries every game.

Ravens | Justin Forsett the lead back    Tue Jul 12, 05:33 PM

Baltimore Ravens RB Justin Forsett is still the 'clear lead dog' in the Ravens' backfield, according to Ryan Mink of baltimoreravens.com. The starting job is Forsett's to lose, with RBs Javorius Allen, Kenneth Dixon, Lorenzo Taliaferro, Terrance West and Trent Richardson lurking behind him.

Footballguys view: He's the lead dog and a fine all-purpose back--when healthy. Forsett missed the final six games of the 2015 season with a broken forearm, but he's back healthy and ready to lead this team on the ground. The veteran back is a good receiving back as well, so there's no need for him to come off the field unless he needs a breather. Fantasy owners are cool on his prospects for this year as Forsett has a current ADP of RB32 (7.10) in 12-team PPR leagues. There's a chance Forsett could catch 70 passes and finish the season as a top-15 fantasy RB, so get him at a value while you can.

Ravens | Trent Richardson considered a long shot    Mon Jun 20, 01:24 PM

Baltimore Ravens RB Trent Richardson (knee) is a long shot to make the 53-man roster, in the opinion of ESPN.com's Jamison Hensley.

Footballguys view: No surprise here. Richardson has a new focus as he stares at a future that doesn't include football. The 3rd-overall pick in the 2012 NFL draft has bounced around the league and been one of the biggest busts in NFL draft history. He had a sore hamstring in minicamp, and now it's been revealed that Richardson needs arthroscopic surgery for a preexisting injury to his knee. We'd be shocked if he makes the Ravens 53-man roster.

Ravens | Trent Richardson expecting surgery    Thu Jun 16, 07:07 PM

Baltimore Ravens RB Trent Richardson (knee) will likely need arthroscopic knee surgery this offseason for a pre-existing issue. He will miss some time, but the extent of that missed time was not disclosed.

Footballguys view: We weren't exactly holding our breath to begin with and we aren't really shocked there is a hiccup as there always is with Richardson. He's going to have a hard time making a dent in the rotation while he's on the trainer's table, and with Justin Forsett, Javorius Allen and rookie Kenneth Dixon in front of him, Richardson is likely to be cut from yet another team.

Ravens | Trent Richardson not practicing    Thu Jun 16, 12:10 PM

Baltimore Ravens RB Trent Richardson (hamstring) is not on the field for the final day of mandatory minicamp Thursday, June 16.

Footballguys view: Trent Richardson: letting teams and fantasy owners down with authority since 2012. If there is a more perfect definition of "disappointing" than Richardson's career, we'd like to know. He's got a tough battle to even make the roster, and needs all the reps he can get. We wouldn't roster him, as we're not sure the Ravens will either.

Ravens | Three BAL RBs up for just one spot?    Wed Jun 15, 01:00 AM

Baltimore Ravens RB Lorenzo Taliaferro might be competing with RB Terrance West and RB Trent Richardson for the No. 4 spot on the depth chart behind RBs Justin Forsett, Javorius Allen and Kenneth Dixon.

Footballguys view: We think Taliaferro will be fine, as West hasn't impressed so far in his career and Trent Richardson is Trent Richardson. No matter what, this isn't the relevant part of the backfield battle. Forsett and Allen holding off Dixon is the part you want to watch. We lean towards Forsett, but Dixon isn't far behind. No matter what, right now there is little clarity and if you have to draft today, we'd say none of them are better than an RB4 because of it, though we expect Forsett or Dixon to take the lead and then put up RB3 numbers at the very worst.

Ravens | Two Ravens RBs back from injury    Tue Jun 7, 04:42 PM

Baltimore Ravens RBs Trent Richardson (hamstring) and Kenneth Dixon (hamstring) participated in organized team activities Tuesday, June 7.

Footballguys view: Richardson is making one--perhaps final--effort to resurrect his career with the Ravens. A hamstring injury isn't what he needs when he has to prove that he can stay in shape and get back to being a dominant runner like he was in college at Alabama. Dixon is quicker than fast and can be difficult to bring down in the open field. Justin Forsett is the starter, but fantasy owners need to watch the competition behind him to see who emerges as a potential handcuff or waiver-wire addition.

Ravens | Trent Richardson's conditioning in question    Fri May 27, 02:39 PM

Updating a previous report, Baltimore Ravens RB Trent Richardson (hamstring) missed the entire first week of organized team activities after he tweaked his hamstring, and head coach John Harbaugh said Richardson must get healthy. Richardson has struggled with injuries and conditioning in his three-year career, averaging only 3.3 yards per carry. He needs a strong offseason and training camp in order to win a spot on the roster.

Footballguys view: Sometimes the headlines can be written months in advance. Richardson is down with a hamstring injury, and that comes back directly to his conditioning. He's fallen out of favor with multiple teams due to conditioning problems and issues (obviously) with motivation. Richardson's career will likely end as a cautionary "what might have been" tale.

Ravens | Trent Richardson has hamstring issue    Thu May 26, 02:52 PM

Baltimore Ravens RB Trent Richardson (hamstring) is dealing with a hamstring injury Thursday, May 26, that he suffered last week.

Footballguys view: Richardson has never recovered from whatever happened to him in Cleveland, and while there is room for him to make some inroads into the carries of the players ahead of him, we don't trust him. An injury in minicamp isn't changing our mind.

Ravens | Three Ravens RBs for one spot    Tue May 24, 02:36 AM

Baltimore Ravens RB Lorenzo Taliaferro, RB Terrance West and RB Trent Richardson are likely to compete for one roster spot in training camp.

Footballguys view: This is a group of has-beens and never-weres, but it will be interesting to see who emerges. Richardson has the highest upside, but his career has been knocked off track by injuries and lack of motivation. The former no.3 overall pick (2012) has worked hard this offseason to reshape his body in an effort to play up to his potential. We're not counting on Richardson here, but he may be the most likely to emerge if he truly has "gotten it."

Ravens | Trent Richardson sheds weight    Mon Apr 25, 10:45 AM

Baltimore Ravens RB Trent Richardson has shed 22 pounds down to 218 pounds, and he is lighter than his playing weight in college.

Footballguys view: He's lost a lot of weight, but is he any good anymore? Richardson had a good rookie season with almost 1,000 yards rushing and 51 receptions...and it's been all downhill since then. Almost washed out of the league, we'll see if Richardson can revamp his career with the Ravens.

Ravens | Trent Richardson signs with Ravens    Mon Apr 18, 10:30 AM

Free-agent RB Trent Richardson (Raiders) signed an undisclosed deal with the Baltimore Ravens Monday, April 18.

Ravens | New focus for Trent Richardson     Fri Mar 25, 09:37 PM

Free-agent RB Trent Richardson took blame for his failures in the NFL, saying he had become 'lazy' because of the lack of structure and 'mentally exhausted' by financial demands from family and friends.

Footballguys view: Richardson added that he has resumed working out as he tries to salvage his career. He is down to 218 pounds, according to reports, as he tries to meet physical benchmarks that will activate a deal with the Baltimore Ravens.

Ravens | Baltimore has agreement with Trent Richardson    Wed Mar 23, 12:50 PM

The Baltimore Ravens have an 'unofficial' agreement to sign free-agent RB Trent Richardson (Raiders), according to head coach John Harbaugh. Richardson worked out for the Ravens this offseason and Baltimore told him they want him in better shape before he officially signs.

Footballguys view: Richardson's bust was mostly due to lack of dedication. The Ravens are a strong organization that could inspire Richardson to invest himself and unlock his talent. They have been successful so far at getting the best from Ryan Mallett, so anything is possible. Justin Forsett should be considered the strongest fantasy play in Baltimore, but a motivated Richardson would have something to say about that.

Ravens | Trent Richardson likely to Ravens    Tue Mar 22, 11:16 AM

Updating previous reports, free-agent RB Trent Richardson (Raiders) is expected to be signed by the Baltimore Ravens.

Ravens | Trent Richardson not signed yet    Wed Mar 2, 04:28 PM

Free-agent RB Trent Richardson (Raiders) has not yet signed with the Baltimore Ravens. A deal is not imminent, but he could still sign.

Ravens | Trent Richardson coming to Ravens    Thu Feb 25, 11:48 AM

Free-agent RB Trent Richardson (Raiders) has agreed to a contract with the Baltimore Ravens Thursday, Feb. 25, pending a physical.

Footballguys view: Third time's the charm, right? The Ravens are likely just taking a shot here, figuring to get some depth in case they get hit with injuries again or, at worst, spending a few bucks for a warm body for OTAs. Does Richardson have anything left? We're dubious about that, and won't run out to grab him in dynasty leagues.

Raiders | Oakland releases Trent Richardson    Mon Aug 31, 07:11 PM

Oakland Raiders RB Trent Richardson was released Monday, Aug. 31, according to a source.

Footballguys view: Richardson has to go down as one of the biggest draft busts in NFL history. Richardson was beat out because rookie Michael Dyer was outperforming him in training camp.

Oakland Raiders RB Trent Richardson may be on the bubble for the final roster, according to ESPN.com's Bill Williamson. Williamson said Michael Dyer could overtake Richardson.

Footballguys view: Dyer is a talented back who bounced around to a few different college programs. He's not elite, but Dyer is a decisive and instinctive runner who can make his living between the tackles. Richardson is looking more and more like one of the biggest busts in NFL history.

Raiders | Trent Richardson battled pneumonia    Thu Aug 6, 05:16 PM

Updating a previous report, Oakland Raiders RB Trent Richardson (illness) said he battled pneumonia for a couple of weeks before the start of training camp, but he's feeling fine now and practiced for the first time Thursday, Aug. 6. Head coach Jack Del Rio said Richardson is down in the 220-pound rage after being sick, after weighing a reported 240 pounds last season. Richardson is averaging 3.3 yards per carry in his career.

Footballguys view: Richardson needs to get healthy, stay healthy and start playing up to his potential. Undrafted RB Michael Dyer has put pressure on Richardson's roster spot with a strong first week of camp.

Raiders | Trent Richardson's spot in jeopardy?    Sun Aug 2, 07:37 PM

Oakland Raiders RB Trent Richardson is likely competing with RB Michael Dyer for a spot on the 53-man roster, and NFL.com's Ian Rapoport puts Richardson's chances of making the final roster at 50-50.

Footballguys view: Dyer was once at the top of FBS football when he helped Cam Newton lead Auburn to a national title in 2010. After a 1,200-yard season for Auburn in 2011, off-field issues then caused him to transfer three times. He didn't play at either Arkansas State or Arkansas Baptist, but he finally got on the field for Louisville last year and rushed for 481 yards and five touchdowns last year. He's not explosive and not proven as a receiver out of the backfield. This is the guy that could push a former top-5 pick (2012) off the Raiders roster. That speaks volumes for where Richardson is at.

Oakland Raiders RB Trent Richardson (undisclosed) was placed on the Active/Non-Football Injury list Friday, July 31.

Raiders | Trent Richardson not impressing    Thu Jul 30, 10:16 AM

Oakland Raiders RB Trent Richardson is rumored to being unimpressive with his new team.

Footballguys view: Richardson was complimented by RB coach Mike Tice earlier this year, but now that the pads are on Richardson needs to elevate his game. The team could use Latavius Murray as the starting back with Roy Helu as the change-of-pace back. This could be Richardson's last shot in the NFL as he's already been a bust with both the Browns and the Colts.

Raiders | Trent Richardson sees opportunity    Tue Jul 28, 08:49 PM

Oakland Raiders RB Trent Richardson plans to make the most of a fresh start in Oakland. 'I know what they [the coaching staff] expect and how they're going to spread the field, putting me in a position to be successful,' said Richardson. 'With that, in talking to [Head] Coach [Jack Del Rio], he just said there is just a lot of opportunity out here. He said he isn't going to promise me anything, but if I come in and work, I can be that bell cow,' Richardson said Tuesday, July 28.

Footballguys view: There have been more than a few positive reports coming out about Richardson in Raiders camp. He's going to compete for the starting job with Latavius Murray, and Richardson may be able to wrestle the job away in training camp. After a solid rookie season with the Browns in 2012, Richardson failed to produce in both 2013 and 2014 with the Colts. The Raiders have redeemed plenty of players during their franchises history, and Richardson could be the next one. Stay tuned.

Raiders | Richardson sheds weight    Sun Jul 5, 07:56 PM

Oakland Raiders RB coach Mike Tice sat down to talk to Sirius XM Radio, and said free agent pickup Trent Richardson "lost some weight, his quickness came around." He also praised Latavius Murray "really came on in that veteran mini-camp. He got his legs under him and showed some quickness, some good finish" and free agent signing Roy Helu's receiving ability was noted.

Footballguys view: Richardson seemed sluggish compared to the back he was at Alabama, so let's see if he looks more spry in training camp and the preseason. Murray is the likely leader in touches in the backfield. but Helu will have a role and Richardson has a way of getting coaches to feed him touches even when makes them worthless. Oakland's offense is no prize, so the luster on Murray beyond his measureables continues to fade.

Oakland Raiders head coach Jack Del Rio said Tuesday, March 24, that he expects RB Latavius Murray and RB Trent Richardson to compete for the starting tailback job. 'I think it will be a competitive situation,' Del Rio said.

Footballguys view: If Richardson can stay in shape, stay healthy and get motivated then he's got tremendous physical ability. The problem is, we haven't seen him flash that ability since his rookie season (2012) in Cleveland. Murray is an ascending player with speed and power. We're putting our chips on Murray to win this job.

Free-agent RB Trent Richardson (Colts) signed with the Oakland Raiders Tuesday, March 17. Terms of the contract were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: This is a Raiders move all the way. For years--decades even--the Raiders have been the final stop for once highly-touted players who lost their way. Sometimes the reclamation projects work out, and sometimes they don't. Talent isn't a question with Richardson--but motivation and lack of durability certainly are.   Colts | Trent Richardson released by Indy    Thu Mar 12, 05:16 PM

Indianapolis Colts RB Trent Richardson was released Thursday, March 12.

Footballguys view: As expected. What is tremendous about the fallout is Richardson has since said the Colts weren't a good fit for him and the next landing spot will be a starting job. We admire his self-belief but we have our doubts he will land anywhere save as a backup. He needs to prove himself, and so far all he's proven is an inability to run the ball.

Colts | Trent Richardson, Indy at odds    Tue Feb 17, 10:47 PM

Indianapolis Colts RB Trent Richardson missed the team's walkthrough and flight for the AFC Championship Game against the New England Patriots. He was suspended two games without pay for not contacting the team prior to his absence. However, sources said his absence was due to serious complications with his girlfriend's pregnancy that could potentially have endangered the life of the child. Richardson rushed her to the hospital Jan. 17, the same day the team left for New England.

Footballguys view: This pairing is likely over after the Colts voided the rest of Richardson's contract. This way they can walk away without having to pay him any dead money. Richardson may not find many teams interested if he finds his way to the open market. He's been a career disappointment, batting weight issues and nagging injuries with both the Colts and the Browns.

Colts | Trent Richardson critiqued by Patriot    Tue Feb 10, 07:34 PM

Indianapolis Colts RB Trent Richardson needs to be more decisive when he runs, according to New England Patriots RB LeGarrette Blount. Blount said Richardson needs to find the creases his offensive line gives him and use his size to his advantage.

Footballguys view: Blount is just telling the truth. Richardson had high upside when he was selected as the third-overall pick by the Cleveland Browns in the 2012 NFL draft. Since then, he's largely been a disappointment. Richardson is not decisive, explosive or energetic with the ball in his hands. We'll likely see the Colts release him this offseason. Richardson will enter a jam-packed RB free agent group. Also, this draft has a ton of talent at the position. This means he might have to wait a while for some team to show interest.

Colts | Indy unhappy with Trent Richardson    Mon Feb 9, 01:29 PM

Indianapolis Colts RB Trent Richardson developed a rocky relationship with the team last year, and the tension built up over the season because of weight issues, accessibility and an absence, according to multiple sources. Richardson was suspended two games for missing a walk-through. Richardson started the year at 225 pounds, but he ballooned up to 240 pounds later in the year, according to a source.

Footballguys view: Richardson's one-game suspension for conduct detrimental to the team voided the guarantee of a $3,184,062 salary in 2015. This allows the Colts to wash their hands of the first-round bust without owing him any money. He'll hit the market in a strong year for running backs through free agency and the draft. Richardson will have a difficult time finding a new home with his recent play.

Indianapolis Colts RB Trent Richardson's one-game suspension for conduct detrimental to the team voided the guarantee of a $3,184,062 salary in 2015.

Footballguys view: We'll see Richardson appeal this with the NFLPA. If the Colts win, it means they'll be able to release Richardson without paying him the final year of his rookie contract. Richardson was the third-overall pick in the 2012 NFL draft, but his career has been in a tailspin since the Colts gave up a first-round pick for him in 2013. The Colts should be in the market for a running back this offseason either through the draft or free agency.

Behind Dan Herron and Zurlon Tipton on the depth chart, Richardson's game has fallen off more than ever this year. He's due to make $3.2 million (fully guaranteed), but we still think the Colts will consider releasing him.
