Colts | Dominic Rhodes wants to return    Mon Jan 27, 09:56 PM

Free-agent RB Dominic Rhodes (Colts) said in a satellite radio interview Monday, Jan. 27, that he is attempting a comeback at age 35. He is hopeful of getting a chance with a team during organized team activities (OTAs).

Footballguys view: Good luck with that. Running backs are dime a dozen in the NFL. There are quality backs 10 years younger than Rhodes who can't see the field. We'd be surprised if he made it onto an active roster.

Colts | Dominic Rhodes signs    Tue Dec 7, 03:15 PM

The Indianapolis Colts signed free-agent RB Dominic Rhodes (UFL) to an undisclosed deal Tuesday, Dec. 7, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.

Footballguys view: Rhodes has been with the Colts a couple of times before. His return may signal that Joseph Addai isn't as close to coming back as some people think. Both Donald Brown and Mike Hart are questionable this week, both with ankle injuries.

UFL press reports Dominic Rhodes has been acquired by the Florida Tuskers of the United Football League. "I spoke to Dominic yesterday and he's excited about resuming his professional career in the UFL with the Tuskers," Head Coach Jay Gruden said. "He has been a productive back in the NFL as both a runner and pass catcher out of the backfield and we believe he'll be a valuable addition to our roster."

Footballguys view: Because you guys need to know.

Colts | Rhodes worked out Tuesday    Thu Dec 3, 10:18 AM

Phil Richards, of The Indianapolis Star, reports the Indianapolis Colts worked out free-agent RB Dominic Rhodes (Bills) Tuesday, Dec. 1, but decided not to sign him.

The Green Bay Press-Gazette's Rob Demovsky reports the Green Bay Packers worked out free-agent RBs Ahman Green (Texans) and Dominic Rhodes (Bills) Monday, Oct. 19, according to an NFL source.

Footballguys view: Both Green and Rhodes are versatile backs that won't fail QB Aaron Rodgers in pass protection. Packers fans might like getting Green back on the team.

Bills | Thin at tailback early in the season    Mon Sep 7, 01:41 AM

Chris Brown, of BuffaloBills.com, reports Buffalo Bills head coach Dick Jauron said the team didn't make any easy moves when it came to cutting players at the deadline. In regards to running back depth, he noted he wishes the team was five-deep at running back and even said he wishes they could take seven players into a game. By releasing RB Dominic Rhodes, the Bills are down to tailbacks Fred Jackson and Xavier Omon for the first three games while Marshawn Lynch serves his suspension. 'We wish Dominic the best. He's a good player,' Jauron said of his former back.

Footballguys view: The release of Dominic Rhodes was a surprise because everyone assumed he was signed to help share the load with Fred Jackson while Marshawn Lynch was serving his suspension. Xavier Omon could be the hot waiver wire pickup of week 2 if Fred Jackson's thumb injury gets worse against New England in the season opener.

Bills | Rhodes cut    Sat Sep 5, 01:06 PM

Alex Marvez, from FoxSports.com, reports Buffalo parted ways with running back Dominic Rhodes. The Bills dispatched Rhodes even with featured running back Marshawn Lynch suspended for the first three games of the season. Rhodes has 3,114 yards and 26 touchdowns in seven seasons with the Colts and Raiders.

Footballguys view: The Bills must favor RB Xavier Omon, the second-year RB from Northwest Missouri State. Omon saw some action in the regular season last year, but didn't appear to have the burst or decisiveness needed when running the football. This preseason Omon looks much better, and does not hesitate when running the football. We like his hard charging style, and he could help the Bills ground game while Marshawn Lynch is suspended.

Bills | Rhodes did not play Sunday because of sore knee    Mon Aug 10, 12:57 AM

Chris Brown, of BuffaloBills.com, reports Buffalo Bills RB Dominic Rhodes (knee) did not play in the team's preseason opener Sunday, Aug. 9, because of a sore knee, according to head coach Dick Jauron. Jauron said, "We thought he would play. He was certainly going to play on offense and he was scheduled to return our kicks and our punts early in the game. We ran him before the game and it was just sore. So it didn't make sense to put him out there."

Footballguys view: The injury gave second-year RB Xavier Omon a chance to get significant work in Rhodes absence, and the youngster did well with the opportunity.

Bills | Want to manage Lynch workload    Thu Jul 16, 11:10 AM

Chris Brown, of BuffaloBills.com, reports the Buffalo Bills coaching staff wants to effectively manage the carries of RB Marshawn Lynch this season due to his physical running style. The coaching staff plans to do so by making use of RBs Fred Jackson and Dominic Rhodes in 2009. To what degree the two will be used to spell Lynch remains to be seen.

Footballguys view: The Bills plan to run with more no huddle this season, so the added tempo will reduce time between snaps and wear running backs out quicker. Lynch has bulked up to 230 pounds, but he said the extra mass has not caused him to lose a step this year.

Bills | Rhodes to help lessen the load on Lynch and Jackson    Thu Jul 16, 11:09 AM

Chris Brown, of BuffaloBills.com, reports Buffalo Bills head coach Dick Jauron wanted to add RB Dominic Rhodes as his third, experienced tailback during the offseason in order to help lighten the load on RBs Marshawn Lynch and Fred Jackson.

Footballguys view: Jauron liked the way both runners were utilized in the offense last year, but he wanted another dependable back to add to the mix, too. "We'd like to take a little bit of pressure off of them." Jauron said of Lynch and Jackson. Second-year running back Xavier Omon was incredibly productive at Northwest Missouri State (the only player with four 1,500 yard seasons in college football history) but when he got playing time last year he didn't seem to have the quickness you need to succeed in the NFL.

Bills | Lynch could be fresher later in the year    Thu Jul 16, 10:44 AM

Chris Brown, of BuffaloBills.com, reports Buffalo Bills RB Marshawn Lynch traditionally finishes the year stronger than he starts. During his career, his yards per carry average in the first half of the season is 3.64. During the second half of the season, he has averaged 4.5 yards per carry during the past two years. Having RBs Fred Jackson and Dominic Rhodes on board this season should allow Lynch to be fresher down the stretch. Lynch, as reported, will miss the first three games due to a suspension.

Footballguys view: Lynch is in terrific shape and is the kind of RB that outlasts the defense in the fourth quarter. It almost always takes more than one man to bring Lynch down and that wears on a defense as the game goes on. It remains to be seen whether the Bills coaching staff will be wise enough to tap this ability by giving Lynch 20 carries a game, or if they will be competitive enough to lean on the running game late in close contests.

Bills | F. Jackson split out wide    Sat May 23, 07:29 PM

Chris Brown of Buffalobills.com reports Jackson has been split out a lot, and I mean a lot. More so than he was last year. That's very telling considering the depth the Bills have a WR.

Footballguys view: In the same report Brown states that Dominic Rhodes is being used sparingly while he gets used to the system. The battle between Fred Jackson and Rhodes will determine who wins the starting RB job while Lynch is the first 3 games of the season due to suspension.

Bills | Several players not present at OTA    Mon May 18, 05:57 PM

Mark Gaughan, of The Buffalo News, reports Buffalo Bills RB Dominic Rhodes, FB Corey McIntyre, S Jairus Byrd and PK Danny Urrego were not present during the Bills' organized team activity Monday, May 18. Byrd and Urrego were not allowed to participate because their universities have not held their graduations yet.

Footballguys view: Dominic Rhodes' absence is curious to say the least. He is in a battle with Fred Jackson for the backup job to Marshawn Lynch. The suspension is being appealed but Lynch will most likely miss the first 3 games of the season meaning that his backup will be the starter at the beginning of the season. Rhodes must have a good excuse because he needs to make a good impression on his new team.

Bills | F. Jackson and Rhodes competing    Thu May 14, 09:11 AM

The Associated Press reports Buffalo Bills RBs Fred Jackson and Dominic Rhodes will compete with each other to start in place of RB Marshawn Lynch at the beginning of the season. Lynch, as reported, is suspended for the first three games of 2009.

Footballguys view: Fred Jackson is expected to win this battle, but the Bills needed more depth at the RB position. Rhodes feels like he's the better back and will have every opportunity to prove it in camp. Even if Rhodes were to lose the competition this should still be a RBBC between the two backs. This battle is more important for when Marshawn Lynch comes back from suspension because it will determine who is his backup in a RBBC.

Bills | Rhodes sees himself as starter    Tue Apr 21, 12:18 PM

Allen Wilson, of the Buffalo News, reports Buffalo Bills RB Dominic Rhodes expects himself to be the team's starting running back in the 2009 season opener in place of suspended RB Marshawn Lynch. 'Always,' Rhodes said of his expectations of being a starter. 'I don't even look at myself, ever, in any situation, as a backup. My mind-set is always that the opportunity (to start) is always there. I compete to start. I don't go anywhere trying to sit on the bench. That's not my thing. I want to be on the field, playing and competing. That's why I play this game.' Rhodes figures to split playing time with RB Fred Jackson during Lynch's suspension.

Footballguys view: It's good to hear that Dominic is ready to go, but this will be a battle that unfolds in training camp. The early edge has to go to Fred Jackson right now, with Rhodes playing a change of pace and receiving role for the team.
