NFL | Darrelle Revis retires    Wed Jul 18, 10:52 AM

Free-agent CB Darrelle Revis (Chiefs) announced his retirement from the NFL Wednesday, July 18.

Footballguys view: We'll see Revis in the Pro Football Hall of Fame someday soon. Revis was a first-round pick of the Jets back in 2007 and he was the definition of a 'shutdown' corner. He defined the position so much that his spot on the field became known as 'Revis Island' and opposing quarterbacks didn't challenge him much. Revis won Super Bowl 49 with the Patriots and should wind up being honored by the Jets in their Ring of Fame after two stints with the team.

Chiefs | Darrelle Revis plans to play    Mon Jan 15, 01:05 PM

Kansas City Chiefs CB Darrelle Revis said he plans to play again next season. He believes can play better if he participates in offseason workouts and training camp.

Footballguys view: Revis did not look like his old self in a handful of games with the Chiefs, but he hasn't looked like "Revis Island" for some time. There's an $8.8 million bonus due in March, so expect the Chiefs to move on from that deal. When released, there's a chance the Chiefs could bring Revis back on a smaller contract.

Chiefs | More on Darrelle Revis deal    Tue Nov 28, 10:28 AM

Updating previous reports, Kansas City Chiefs CB Darrelle Revis will have $9.815 million fully guaranteed if he's on the roster for the fifth day of the league year in 2018. He also has $8.8 million in per-game roster bonuses, which means he'd count for less than $4 million on the 2018 salary cap. A $185,000 workout bonus puts the potential earnings at $10 million.

Chiefs | Darrelle Revis signed by Chiefs    Wed Nov 22, 04:54 PM

Free-agent CB Darrelle Revis (Jets) was signed by the Kansas City Chiefs Wednesday, Nov. 22.

Footballguys view: Revis hasn't played this year and has been out of the league since last season. He's in shape according to reports and the Chiefs may have a large role for him in the defensive backfield opposite Marcus Peters. Revis is not the same player he used to be, but we're intrigued to see how much he has left in the tank.

NFL | Darrelle Revis still waiting    Sat Jul 29, 02:42 PM

Free-agent CB Darrelle Revis (Jets) is still working out in hopes of playing in 2017, but he has not received much interest at this point.

Footballguys view: Revis isn't going to get top dollar like he's used to. If he wants to continue playing, it will likely be a short-term contract for near veteran minimum.

NFL | Darrelle Revis training to play    Tue Jul 4, 08:59 AM

Free-agent CB Darrelle Revis (Jets) is training in Florida in anticipation to play in 2017.

Footballguys view: The question is, which team is going to sign him and for how much? Revis' best days are clearly behind him, and there has been talk of him moving to safety, but is he willing and what is he asking? He didn't have a huge impact last season and we don't think he will this season either.

Dolphins | Miami not considering Darrelle Revis    Mon Jun 5, 08:22 PM

Free-agent CB Darrelle Revis (Jets) is not a player the Miami Dolphins have considered signing this offseason, according to sources.

Footballguys view: The buzz around Revis is that there's 'no market' for his services as teams are concerned about his current commitment to football. If he does get any interest towards training camp, Revis would have to be willing to play for a deal around the veteran minimum. He also would be unlikely to be guaranteed any money or a spot on the 53-man roster if signed.

Cowboys | Dallas not looking at Darrelle Revis    Sun May 28, 06:05 PM

Free-agent CB Darrelle Revis (Jets) is not an option for Dallas Cowboys, according to sources inside the organization.

Footballguys view: Just last week, ESPN New York reported there was no market for Revis because of last year's significant decline and whispers about his commitment. That comes from Rich Cimini, one of the most plugged in writers in all of football. Revis may be able to sign with somebody before training camp, but it will be for a deal that hovers near veteran minimum.

NFL | Darrelle Revis won't face discipline    Mon May 22, 10:22 AM

Free-agent CB Darrelle Revis (Jets) won't face league discipline after felony assault charges were dismissed in March by a Pittsburgh judge, according to a league spokesman.

Footballguys view: Charges were dropped in March, but the league wanted to conduct their own investigation with no wrongdoing found. He's not going to get suspended, but Revis is drawing zero interest on the open market. Teams may be questioning his commitment to the game after he seemed to mail it in last year for the Jets.

NFL | Darrelle Revis has tools to play safety    Sat Apr 15, 09:34 PM

Free-agent CB Darrelle Revis (Jets) still has enough speed and athleticism to be effective covering tight ends and slot receivers as a safety, according to an AFC personnel executive. 'With the way offenses are trending towards more tight end mismatches, Revis could be a valuable option as a strong safety in a base defense,' the executive said.

Footballguys view: That's a transition that many elite corners make towards the end of their career. If Revis gets a chance (with the Patriots?), then he'll have to play faster on tape than he did in 2016. Some are questioning his conditioning level, so Revis will have to prove that he can stay in shape if that in fact has been a problem for him.

Steelers | Mike Tomlin not talking Darrelle Revis    Wed Mar 29, 04:50 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin would not say if the Steelers have any interest in free-agent CB Darrelle Revis (Jets).

Footballguys view: Revis could go back to the Patriots, but earlier reports indicate he wants to play for the Steelers. The PITT product is no longer the same player he used to be, and perhaps a move to safety is best for him in 2017.

Patriots | No talks between NE, Darrelle Revis    Sat Mar 25, 10:22 AM

Free-agent CB Darrelle Revis (Jets) has not had any contract talks with the New England Patriots at this point.

Patriots | Darrelle Revis heading back to Pats?    Thu Mar 23, 01:43 PM

Free-agent CB Darrelle Revis (Jets) appears to be likely to be signed by the New England Patriots, according to sources. Those sources, according to CBS Sports' Jason La Canfora, believe if Revis were to play for anyone in 2017 it would be the Patriots.

Footballguys view: It's an interesting idea. He won't get a large payday and he's a shell of himself, so how he is used is anyone's guess. We think if anyone can find a way to re-boot Revis, it's Bill Belichick and Matt Patricia.

Patriots | New England may look at Darrelle Revis    Sun Mar 19, 05:30 PM

Free-agent CB Darrelle Revis (Jets) could receive interest from the New England Patriots this offseason, in the opinion of The Boston Globe's Ben Volin.

Footballguys view: Revis isn't the same player as when he helped the Patriots win a Super Bowl in 2014. He may have to move to safety if he wants to be more than a backup with the Patriots....or any team that takes a chance on him.

New York Jets CB Darrelle Revis is facing pending charges of robbery, terroristic threats, conspiracy and aggravated assault as a result of his role in an altercation over the weekend, according to a police statement Thursday, Feb. 16.

Jets | Darrelle Revis may have to take pay cut    Mon Feb 6, 09:52 AM

New York Jets CB Darrelle Revis may have to take a pay cut from his $15.3 million salary cap charge to stay with the team in 2017. He has a $2 million roster bonus due March 11.

Footballguys view: Revis isn't a top corner any more, he might not even be a better than average corner. The Jets could move him to safety, but at either position he would be overpaid at a 15.3 million cap number.

Jets | Darrelle Revis open to playing safety    Mon Jan 2, 11:05 AM

Updating previous reports, New York Jets CB Darrelle Revis said he's open to moving to safety next season if it helps the team.

Footballguys view: He's only 31 years old, but Revis is not the player he used to be. Moving to safety makes a ton of sense, but keeping him around with a $15 million cap number is not wise for the Jets. If the two sides can restructure his deal, then Revis could stay with the team and likely switch positions.

Jets | Darrelle Revis lobbying to stay?    Sat Dec 31, 12:15 AM

New York Jets CB Darrelle Revis said he wants to return to the team in 2017 and eventually retire as a Jet. 'Do the New York Jets want to treat my situation with class or no class?' 'With me being one of the best players in the history of this franchise, do they want me to retire here or not retire here?'

Footballguys view: Revis is no longer the player he used to be, and he's on the books through the 2019 season. With a cap hit of $15.3 million in 2017 (with $6 million in dead money) his return seems unlikely without a restructured deal.

Jets | Darrelle Revis moving to safety?    Wed Dec 14, 11:51 PM

New York Jets CB Darrelle Revis will not move to safety this season, not even with a vacancy at the position. 'He's playing corner,' head coach Todd Bowles said Wednesday, Dec. 14. However, Bowles admitted the team might consider the safety option for Revis during the offseason.

Footballguys view: We don't see Revis as the type of guy open to position change. We do see him as wanting more money because that's his general mode. So we also don't see him taking less to switch to a new position. All of which is to say, long story even longer, he is unlikely to be with the Jets next season.

Jets | Darrelle Revis has lost interest in playing    Wed Nov 30, 10:51 PM

New York Jets CB Darrelle Revis has had a big decline this season, and beat writer Manish Mehta suggests it is due to a questionable drive and lack of commitment and discipline to maintain his body. A Revis confidant said the cornerback is no longer interested in playing. 'He's done. If he had his way, he'd be done right now. He doesn't want to play anymore. He's made a lot of money,' the source said Wednesday, Nov. 30.

New York Jets CB Darrelle Revis is due to make $15 million in 2017, including a $2 million signing bonus due on the second day of the league year in March. There is speculation the Jets may skip his presumed move to safety and simply cut bait as a result of his disappointing play this season.

Footballguys view: We could see that happening. The Jets need all the help they can get, and they may want to free up cap space by getting rid of Revis. Like most corners, he could move to safety at this point in his career. We're sure some team would be willing to transition him.
