NFL | Isaac Redman retires    Fri Aug 22, 10:42 AM

Free-agent RB Isaac Redman (back) said he is no longer able to play football after suffering a spinal cord injury in 2013.

Footballguys view: Neck injuries are difficult to come back from, and they've ended multiple careers around the NFL.

The Pittsburgh Steelers have declared CB Antwon Blake, C Cody Wallace, WR Derek Moye, RB Isaac Redman, CB Isaiah Green, QB Landry Jones, DL Loni Fangupo inactive for Week 4.

Steelers | Isaac Redman played with concussion    Thu Sep 26, 03:20 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers RB Isaac Redman (concussion) said he returned to the team's Week 3 game with a concussion, after telling the doctors he was OK. 'I had a concussion,' Redman said Wednesday. 'I was pretty much out of it the rest of the game. I just tried to go back in.'

Footballguys view: This could have far greater impact than anything Redman has ever done on the field and will--if true--have serious ramifications for the Steelers. Redman is a non-factor in fantasy at this point and will be even less of one now that Le'Veon Bell is coming back.

Pittsburgh Steelers RB Isaac Redman (concussion) said he had a concussion in Week 2 and was allowed to go back in the game. 'I had a concussion,' Redman said. 'I was pretty much out of it the rest of the game. I just tried to go back in.' When asked how he beat the tests knowing he had a concussion, Redman said: 'I said I was all right.'

Steelers | Isaac Redman sinks to bottom of depth chart    Tue Sep 24, 03:45 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers RB Isaac Redman, the team's Week 1 starter at running back, is now listed as fourth on the depth chart behind RBs Felix Jones, Le'Veon Bell (foot) and Jonathan Dwyer, in that order. Jones is the team's leading rusher with 71 yards and is averaging 4.2 yards per carry.

Footballguys view: Redman hangs around for veteran depth but it's clear he's not he answer at the position. That answer may in fact be Bell, the rookie from Michigan State. Bell is expected to play in Week 4 against the Minnesota Vikings, but they'll likely ease him back into the mix.

Steelers | Le'Veon Bell expected to play    Tue Sep 24, 12:49 PM

Updating previous reports, Pittsburgh Steelers RB Le'Veon Bell (foot) is expected to play in the team's Week 4 game in London against the Minnesota Vikings. Bell has progressed ahead of schedule from his injury.

Footballguys view: Bell could get a bunch of touches against a Vikings defense that can be abused up front. The Steelers need a spark to their offense from the backfield and the rookie could provide it in easier matchups. If he does play then Bell is a "what the heck" flex in Week 4.

Steelers | Le'Veon Bell practices in full    Thu Sep 19, 04:32 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers RB Le'Veon Bell (foot) practiced in full Thursday, Sept. 19. However, Bell doesn't think he'll be able to play in Week 3.

Footballguys view: Keep in mind that there was the earlier report about him "taking it slow" in his rehab. Still, the Steelers have to be doing cartwheels as the backfield in Pittsburgh is a mess. While he won't play against the Chicago Bears--and wouldn't be a safe start there anyway--he's clearly making progress and will be playing sooner than later. The question then becomes, will the offensive line issues hold him back and hamper his game?

Steelers | Jonathan Dwyer's role unclear    Thu Sep 12, 01:53 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers RB Jonathan Dwyer is unsure what his role will be heading into Week 2 against the Cincinnati Bengals. 'They told me to get ready and play,' Dwyer said. 'I don't know exactly what I'm doing. I'm just getting myself ready to play.' The Steelers finished with only 32 total rushing yards in Week 1, the second lowest around the league, and RB Isaac Redman fumbled twice and had only eight carries for nine yards.

Footballguys view: He'll likely get his shot at some point, even though he is behind fumbling Isaac Redman and Felix Jones, who is still learning the offense. With Maurkice Pouncey on injured reserve and the offensive line playing poorly anyway, none of these backs are worth much. Redman might fill in at the flex spot, but you're better off avoiding this backfield entirely.

Steelers | Le'Veon Bell could miss more time    Wed Sep 11, 10:56 AM

Updating previous reports, Pittsburgh Steelers RB Le'Veon Bell's (foot) injury is now being classified as a Lisfranc sprain, according to a source. The team is now hoping he returns in a month.

Footballguys view: More bad news for the Steelers here. In the meantime we'll see Isaac Redman, Felix Jones, and newly re-signed Jonathan Dwyer in the backfield. At this time Redman would be the one worth starting at a flex spot if you're truly desperate. You're better off if you can avoid this situation.

Steelers | Jonathan Dwyer's role unclear    Tue Sep 10, 01:34 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin would not indicate what kind of role RB Jonathan Dwyer would have in Week 2 against the Cincinnati Bengals.   Steelers | Isaac Redman will start in Week 2    Tue Sep 10, 12:32 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers RB Isaac Redman will get the start at running back in the team's Week 2 game, according to head coach Mike Tomlin.

Footballguys view: Fantasy owners shouldn't have a ton of confidence in Redman after his two fumble performance in week 1 against the Titans. Jonathan Dwyer has been added back to the roster and will take some touches away. Both are just keeping the seat warm for rookie RB Le'Veon Bell.

Steelers | Jonathan Dwyer returning    Mon Sep 9, 08:15 AM

The Pittsburgh Steelers will re-sign RB Jonathan Dwyer.

Footballguys view: No surprise here. Isaac Redman fumbled near the end zone and did not impress against the Titans. LaRod Stephens-Howling suffered a knee injury and is out for the season. Felix Jones barely played and missed badly in pass protection. We could see Dwyer get a majority of the carries until rookie Le'Veon Bell is back from his foot injury.

Steelers | RBs lay an egg    Sun Sep 8, 04:25 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers RBs Isaac Redman and LaRod Stephens-Howling combined for 14 carries for just 27 yards in Week 1. Redman had eight carries for 9 yards.

Footballguys view: Redman fumbled twice and didn't look great when he did hold onto the ball. With Maurkice Pouncey gone for the season, it's hard to like Le'Veon Bell when he returns to the lineup.

Pittsburgh Steelers RB Le'Veon Bell (foot) is officially listed as out for the Week 1 game against the Tennessee Titans. RB Isaac Redman remains on track to make the start in the regular season opener.

Footballguys view: Redman is a solid flex play as the lead back for a team that is at home and favored to win.

Steelers | Felix Jones, LaRod Stephens-Howling to see time    Wed Sep 4, 06:12 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers RBs Felix Jones and LaRod Stephens-Howling likely will receive playing time Week 1 even though RB Isaac Redman will start he game. Stephens-Howling is expected to be the third-down back while Jones likely will receive time when Redman needs a break.

Footballguys view: This is a RBBC while rookie Le'Veon Bell. None of the three backs in the committee have that much fantasy value. Redman would be at the top as the starter but he's a desperation flex play at best this week.

Steelers | Isaac Redman expects to start    Mon Sep 2, 02:23 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers RB Isaac Redman said he expects to start while RB Le'Veon Bell (foot) is out of the lineup. Redman said the coaches do not want to use a committee at running back, and he does not want to give them a reason to use a committee.

Footballguys view: Redman is coming back from a pinched nerve that caused him to miss plenty of time in the preseason. Felix Jones is thought to be the starter at this time. Either way the team will use a RBBC with Redman, Jones and LaRod Stephens-Howling while rookie Le'Veon Bell (foot) is out.

Pittsburgh Steelers RB Felix Jones is expected to start Week 1. He likely vaulted ahead of RBs Isaac Redman and LaRod Stephens-Howling with 14 carries for 56 yards in the final preseason game.

Footballguys view: Interesting development here in Pittsburgh. Jones could get the nod over Isaac Redman who is still dealing with a pinched nerve. The team is going to use a RBBC with all three backs while rookie Le'Veon Bell is out. Bell is expected back in a few weeks from his foot injury.

Steelers | Three RBs expected to share time for now    Sun Sep 1, 12:32 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers RBs Isaac Redman, Felix Jones and LaRod Stephens-Howling are expected to share playing time until RB Le'Veon Bell (foot) is able to recover from his foot injury.

Footballguys view: The Steelers backfield wasn't that robust for fantasy football last year, and with this group of players, it is likely to yield very little value, perhaps even after Le'Veon Bell returns. We wouldn't recommend starting, or maybe even rostering any of the trio listed above, except maybe Redman if you are truly desperate.

Footballguys view: Dwyer has struggled with weight problems during his entire pro career. Some feel the Steelers were tired of his lack of motivation.   Steelers | Isaac Redman to sit Thursday    Wed Aug 28, 12:03 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin said Tuesday, Aug. 27, that RB Isaac Redman (pinched nerve) will miss a third straight preseason game Thursday, Aug. 29. Redman feels that being sat out is a sign the head coach plans to use him in Week 1. 'If they're throwing you out there in a preseason game and making you play and compete when you're injured, that's not a good sign,' Redman said. 'To sit you and give you that rest you need to come in for Week 1, it tells you a lot about what they think of you.'

Footballguys view: Redman should be the starter for the Steelers while rookie Le'Veon Bell (foot) is out. He'll split time with Jonathan Dwyer and LaRod Stephens-Howling in the Steelers backfield.

Pittsburgh Steelers RB Isaac Redman is expected to start while RB Le'Veon Bell (foot) recovers from his foot injury. RBs Jonathan Dwyer and La-Rod Stephens Howling will serve as the backups.

Steelers | Le'Veon Bell injury update    Wed Aug 21, 02:14 PM

Updating a previous report, the Pittsburgh Steelers believe RB Le'Veon Bell (foot) has a Lisfranc injury but are hoping he will not need surgery. The team will not know if he will need surgery until he gets his second opinion.

Footballguys view: Lisfranc is an injury that can linger for quite some time and Bell may be missing around 4-6 weeks at minimum. We'll know more about his injury if he can avoid surgery. Bell is now off draft boards for fantasy owners and players that already drafted him as a RB2 are left scrambling. The Steelers will use guys like Jonathan Dwyer and Isaac Redman while Bell is out. We should also see an increase in touches for LaRod Stephens-Howling.

Steelers | Le'Veon Bell expected to miss several weeks    Wed Aug 21, 01:21 PM

Updating a previous report, Pittsburgh Steelers RB Le'Veon Bell (foot) is expected to miss at least several weeks because of the foot injury he suffered in the second preseason game. The team has not completely diagnosed Bell's injury at this point.

Footballguys view: Foot problems are known to linger if not treated properly and given enough time to heal. No word on whether or not this is a Lisfranc injury but there are suspicions that it could be. With Bell out we'll see more from Jonathan Dwyer and Isaac Redman with the first team offense.

Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin said RBs Le'Veon Bell (knee) and Isaac Redman (shoulder) are considered day-to-day at this point and have not been ruled out for the team's second preseason game.

Updating previous reports, Pittsburgh Steelers RB Le'Veon Bell (knee) aggravated his left knee Thursday, Aug. 15, when a teammate hit him in a non-contact drill. Bell didn't take another snap and had his left leg heavily wrapped after practice.

Footballguys view: Possible bad news for the Steelers here. No word on the severity here so we'll have to wait and see how long this could keep Bell off the field. Most of the news is reporting that Bell's injury is minor, and we haven't heard anything about an MRI or diagnosis.

Steelers | Le'Veon Bell, Isaac Redman banged up    Thu Aug 15, 05:51 PM

Updating a previous report, RB Le'Veon Bell (knee) dealt with a left knee injury in practice Thursday, Aug. 15, and RB Isaac Redman (stinger) suffered a stinger.

Footballguys view: Bell and Redman were listed as co-starters on the Steelers first depth chart of training camp. Most expect Bell to win the starting job and be the lead back for the Steelers in 2013. Bell is a big runner with build up power and speed. He has a few moves in the open field and is light on his feet for a big man.

The Pittsburgh Steelers list RB Isaac Redman or RB Le'Veon Bell (knee) as their first-team running back heading into the second preseason game.

Pittsburgh Steelers RB Isaac Redman said he believes the team will be able to effectively use him, RB Le'Veon Bell and RB Jonathan Dwyer this season because they want to establish the running game.

Footballguys view: Bell was drafted in the second-round of the 2013 NFL draft and will compete to be the starting job. He's a momentum runner who needs a big workload to grind down the defense. Bell is the favorite to win the job with Redman and Dwyer competing for the backup position.

Steelers | No depth chart for RBs    Wed Jun 12, 03:08 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers running backs coach Kirby Wilson said the team does not really have a running back depth chart at this point. 'There really is no pecking order other than that's how we ended the season. Guys are jumping in accordingly and rotating themselves. There really is no rhyme or reason to it,' Wilson said. RB Jonathan Dwyer will enter training camp as No. 1 on the depth chart because he finished last season there.

Footballguys view: We'd expect to see rookie Le'Veon Bell (Michigan State) win the starting job at some point this year. Bell is a big runner who can be difficult to bring down when he's at full speed. He's got good footwork and moves in the open field to make people miss.

Steelers | New blocking scheme in the works    Fri May 24, 01:00 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers offensive line coach Jack Bicknell Jr. is installing an outside zone, one-cut blocking scheme in organized team activities in favor of their old power and inside blocking scheme. The Steelers are changing their approach to take advantage of their big and nimble offensive line personnel. Pittsburgh got poor production from their running backs last year, and RB Jonathan Dwyer led the team in rushing with only 623 yards, the lowest total by a rusher in team history since Merrill Hoge ran for 810 in 1991. Bicknell had success with the blocking scheme with the Kansas City Chiefs last year. 'We are going to be dedicated to the zone,' RB Isaac Redman said. 'We are still going to be a power team, but we are going to have this zone scheme in so we can keep the defense on its heels and keep them running.'

Footballguys view: The outside zone is a better fit for rookie RB Le'Veon Bell (Michigan State). He's a big runner who is swift when he builds a head of steam. Using outside zone will allow Bell to build that power and speed before he makes a cut upfield. We're expecting Bell to win the starting job in training camp.

Steelers | Le'Veon Bell's understanding of offense will decide role    Sun May 19, 02:51 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers RB Le'Veon Bell's chance at starting this season will be determined by how quickly he will be able to pick up the offense. If Bell struggles to learn the offense, RB Jonathan Dwyer or RB Isaac Redman could start.

Footballguys view: Like all rookies Bell must prove that he knows the playbook and can pass protect. Bell is the favorite to win the starting job in training camp. He has build up speed and can make defenders miss in the open field. Bell lacks instant power but is tough to bring down when he builds a head of steam.

Steelers | Isaac Redman could have edge in No. 2 RB job    Wed May 1, 02:52 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers RB Isaac Redman appears to have an edge over RB Jonathan Dwyer for the No. 2 running back job at this point.

Footballguys view: Redman is a favorite of the coaching staff and can be relied on as veteran depth. The team should start rookie Le'Veon Bell at the running back position. Bell is seen as a full time back so Redman is unlikely to produce much for fantasy owners.

Steelers | Isaac Redman signs tender    Thu Apr 18, 07:16 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers restricted free-agent RB Isaac Redman has signed his one-year tender offer. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: Redman is a good backup caliber RB who can contribute as a runner or receiver out of the backfield on a part time basis. The Steelers should add a potential starting RB in the 2013 NFL Draft. A guy like Jonathan Franklin (UCLA) in the second-round makes a lot of sense for them.

Footballguys view: Those two RBs are fine backup quality players but the Steelers need to find themselves a starter. We expect them to address the position in the 2013 NFL Draft. A player like Stepfan Taylor (Stanford) in the third-round makes a lot of sense for the Steelers.

Steelers | Art Rooney says need better production for RBs    Fri Jan 25, 05:46 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers president Art Rooney II said the team needs better production from the running back position next season whether it be from the running backs on the roster or someone else. 'Whether it's [RB Rashard Mendenhall] or [RB Jonathan Dwyer] or [RB Isaac Redman] or somebody else, we have to be better at that position, as well as others, but certainly at that position. In this offseason that's something we've got to look at and decide how we get better and who we get better with.'

Footballguys view: The Steelers need to go back to Steelers football. That's a recipe for success which includes pounding the rock and beating opponents up with the ground game. We'll see if Pittsburgh adds a RB like Eddie Lacy (Alabama) in the 2013 NFL Draft.

Steelers | Isaac Redman, Jonathan Dwyer not expected to be top RB    Sun Jan 20, 05:44 PM
