Broncos | Two defensive players not expected back    Mon Jan 21, 10:07 PM

Denver Broncos impending free-agent LB Shane Ray and CB Bradley Roby are not expected to re-sign with the Broncos this offseason.

Footballguys view: Ray didn't get his fifth-year option picked up by the Broncos for 2019. He was inactive over the last few games of the year as a healthy scratch and his time is clearly done. Roby will test the market, as he should, but there might be a small chance that his market is so cold the Broncos could bring him back. New Broncos head coach Vic Fangio should have a much better defense that fits what Roby does well (zone coverage).

FB Andy Janovich (thigh), LB Von Miller (knee), LB Shane Ray (ankle, wrist) and OT Jared Veldheer (knee) were limited during practice.   Broncos | Two Broncos defenders could go    Mon Oct 29, 11:08 AM

Denver Broncos LB Brandon M. Marshall and DE Shane Ray could be trade chips.

Footballguys view: Marshall is banged up right now with a knee injury, so they can't trade an injured player. Ray has been banged up too this year but he's healthy enough to trade if the team wants to. They didn't pick up Ray's fifth-year option earlier this year so he's set to be an unrestricted free agent in 2019.

Broncos | Shane Ray may be ready for Week 1    Mon Jul 23, 12:13 PM

Updating a previous report, Denver Broncos DE Shane Ray (wrist) may start training camp on the Physically Unable to Perform list because of his wrist injury but has a chance to be ready for Week 1 since he did not need wrist surgery.

Footballguys view: It would be wise for the Broncos to protect Ray on the PUP list. He avoided surgery (would have been the fourth one) on his wrist this offseason and may want to push himself too hard early on. If on the PUP list, Ray's absence will create an even larger opportunity for 2018 first-round pick Bradley Chubb to show what he can do opposite Von Miller in camp.

Broncos | Shane Ray avoids surgery    Mon Jul 23, 08:56 AM

Denver Broncos LB Shane Ray (wrist) avoided wrist surgery this offseason and may not miss regular season games now. He could still open on the Physically Unable to Perform list.

Footballguys view: Ray tried to play through the wrist injury last year and was not effective. It prevented him from getting after the quarterback with the same intensity and Ray dropped down to about 220 pounds by the end of the 2017 season. By avoiding the fourth surgery on this wrist, Ray should be able to maintain his weight and get back to the player he was early in his career. The former first-round pick (2015) is in the final year of his contract and set to hit free agency since the Broncos declined his fifth-year option.

Broncos | Shane Ray will have bone fusion    Tue Jun 12, 03:03 PM

Denver Broncos LB Shane Ray's (wrist) surgery on his left wrist will include bone fusion.

Footballguys view: Ray may miss the first month of the regular season, even though he's hoping to be ready for Week 1. A first-round pick in 2015, Ray's career has been set back by injury. This wrist problem required three surgeries last year and seriously impacted his game in 2017. Without Ray, 2018 first-round pick Bradley Chubb will get plenty of time to showcase his pass-rushing ability.

Shane Ray player page

Broncos | Shane Ray will have surgery Thursday    Mon Jun 11, 07:09 PM

Denver Broncos LB Shane Ray (wrist) will undergo surgery on his left wrist Thursday, June 14, according to a source.

Footballguys view: Ray's wrist injury required three surgeries last year and he struggled playing through the injury. This year, we'll see 2018 first-round pick Bradley Chubb likely start on the outside opposite Von Miller. The hope is that Ray only misses two or three regular season games, but he could return sooner than expected.

Link to story
Shane Ray player page

Broncos | More on Shane Ray    Thu Jun 7, 08:08 AM

Updating previous reports, Denver Broncos LB Shane Ray (wrist) will have his fourth surgery on his left wrist in less than a year. He'll have a clean-up surgery related to the previous one and will likely miss the start of camp.

Footballguys view: At points this offseason, there has been talk in Denver about rookie Bradley Chubb replacing Ray as the big time pass rusher for the Broncos across from Von Miller. This makes that argument null, as this will cost Ray at least some of his 2018. Denver declined Ray's 2019 option, so he is a free agent after this year.

Link to story
Shane Ray player page

Broncos | Shane Ray to undergo second surgery    Wed Jun 6, 08:15 PM

Denver Broncos LB Shane Ray (wrist) will need another surgery on his wrist.

Footballguys view: Ray can return sometime in the first month of the regular season if all goes well. It's a blow to a pass rusher in the final year of his rookie contract. A first-round pick in 2015 for the Broncos, the team declined his fifth-year option largely due to the injuries that have held him back.

Link to story
Shane Ray player page

Broncos | Shane Ray may have surgery    Tue Jun 5, 03:11 PM

Denver Broncos LB Shane Ray (wrist) is seeking a second opinion on his injured left wrist, but he could need surgery, according to a source. The procedure would not end his season, however.

Footballguys view: Bad news for the Broncos pass rusher here. Ray struggled through an injury-riddled season in 2017 and his weight dropped to around 220 pounds. He's gained the weight back and measured in around 245 pounds for OTAs. The wrist soreness he's experienced is not a good sign and he may require a fourth surgery (he had three last year) on the injury.

Broncos | Shane Ray back for camp?    Mon Jun 4, 04:09 PM

Updating a previous report, Denver Broncos LB Shane Ray's (wrist) goal is to be ready for training camp, according to head coach Vance Joseph.

Footballguys view: Ray is dealing with swelling and soreness and will take it easy until camp, but he is expected to be fine. It's the same wrist that caused Ray to miss half of last season.

Link to story
Shane Ray player page

Broncos | Shane Ray to be limited    Mon Jun 4, 02:48 PM

Denver Broncos LB Shane Ray (wrist) will be held out of some workouts moving forward because he is dealing with soreness in his wrist. Ray underwent three surgeries on the wrist last season.

Footballguys view: This is the same wrist that slowed down Ray in 2017. He has gained weight back after losing pounds due to this injury. Ray was down around 220 pounds last year but is checking in around 245 pounds during OTAs. The Broncos didn't pick up his fifth-year option, so Ray is set to be an unrestricted free agent in 2019. If he has a big year, Ray is going to get paid. The Broncos selected Bradley Chubb with the 5th overall pick to start opposite Von Miller. Ray has talent but is clearly not in the long-term plans for the Broncos.

Shane Ray player page

Broncos | No option for Shane Ray    Wed May 2, 12:39 PM

Updating a previous report, Denver Broncos LB Shane Ray won't have his fifth-year option exercised.

Footballguys view: Ray had an injury-plagued 2017, with a wrist injury limiting him to eight games. He had flashed as a part-time player with the Broncos earlier in his career, and Ray had 8.0 sacks just two years ago. Things change quickly around here, and it looks like the selection of Bradley Chubb in the first round led to the Broncos deciding they can move on from Ray after this year.

Broncos | Shane Ray expects option to be picked up    Sat Apr 21, 04:37 PM

Denver Broncos LB Shane Ray said he expects the team to exercise his fifth-year option this offseason.

Footballguys view: The Broncos have to decide whether or not they want Ray for the fifth season. He was injured most of last year and turned in a disappointing 1.0 sack performance for the entire season. Healthy now, Ray could push for 7-8 sacks in 2018.

Broncos | Shane Ray adds weight    Sat Apr 21, 04:35 PM

Denver Broncos LB Shane Ray (wrist) said he currently weighs 240 pounds and plans to play the 2018 season at 240 or 245 pounds. He was down to 223 pounds at the end of the 2017 season because his wrist injury would not let him work out fully.

Broncos | Shane Ray sent to IR    Tue Dec 19, 01:44 PM

Denver Broncos LB Shane Ray (wrist) was placed on the Reserve/Injured list Tuesday, Dec. 19, after undergoing another wrist surgery four days earlier.

Footballguys view: Ray played at 225 pounds this year. He couldn't lift weights because of the wrist injury, and he had three surgeries on the wrist in four months. Ray, a first-round pick in 2015, has tremendous ability when healthy. This season was just a wash as he was playing on will and couldn't produce at the expected level.
