Buccaneers | Make roster moves    Sat Sep 1, 01:54 PM

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have released DT Frank Okam, DT Amobi Okoye, SS Larry Asante, WR Landon Cox, LB Rennie Curran, LB Jacob Cutrera, TE Drake Dunsmore, PK Kai Forbath, OT Jermarcus Hardrick, RB Robert Hughes, FB Cody Johnson, RB Mossis Madu, DT Jordan Nix, C Moe Petrus, TE Zach Pianalto, QB Brett Ratliff, CB James Rogers, WR Jordan Shipley and DT Teryl White. The team also waived injured OG Desmond Wynn (undisclosed).

Footballguys view: Shipley has been released by two teams in the last month. Injuries have held him back during his pro career and he may find it difficult to find a new team.

Buccaneers | Two competing for backup QB job    Mon Jul 2, 01:33 PM

Tampa Bay Buccaneers QB Dan Orlovsky and Brett Ratliff will compete for the primary backup quarterback job during training camp. The team likely will decide whether to keep two or three quarterbacks on their final roster based on how Orlovsky and Ratliff perform.

Footballguys view: Orlovsky has more experience, but Ratliff has a better natural skill set. The edge has to go to Orlovsky right now, but keep an eye on this battle in training camp. Ratliff's incredibly strong arm could work well in the play action system new Bucs head coach Greg Schiano has installed.

Browns | Brett Ratliff signed    Mon Oct 11, 03:36 PM

The Cleveland Browns have signed QB Brett Ratliff off the New England Patriots' practice squad, reports ESPN's Adam Schefter. Terms of the contract were not disclosed. He has been told he will be the No. 2 quarterback in Week 6.

Footballguys view: Ratliff was with the Browns before as he followed Eric Mangini over from the Jets. He'll backup Colt McCoy this week, and there's a chance that he could see the field if the rookie quarterback struggles. Ratliff loves to throw the deep pass and isn't afraid to attack the defense with long passes.

Jaguars | Brett Ratliff waived from practice squad    Mon Sep 27, 03:56 PM

The Jacksonville Jaguars have waived QB Brett Ratliff from their practice squad, reports Jaguars.com.

Browns | Unlikely to keep four QBs    Mon Jun 21, 06:36 PM

The Cleveland Browns likely will not be able to keep four quarterbacks on the roster this season, reports Tony Grossi, of the Cleveland Plain Dealer. Brett Ratliff and Colt McCoy will compete for the No. 3 quarterback job during training camp.

Footballguys view: Brett Ratliff followed over head coach Eric Mangini from the New York Jets, but could wind up on the practice squad (or the unemployment line) this year. Ratliff is a prototypical gunslinger, with a big arm and fearlessness when throwing down the field. However, he think he can make throws he shouldn't and thus will make too many poor decisions with the football. Colt McCoy is the quarterback of the future in Cleveland, and could get on the field late this year if he develops quickly.

Browns | Brett Ratliff has chance to make team    Tue May 11, 03:04 PM

Steve Doerschuk, of the Canton Repository, reports Cleveland Browns head coach Eric Mangini said QB Brett Ratliff has a chance to make the team this season but said Ratliff did not play as well as he had hoped.

Footballguys view: Ratliff came over with head coach Eric Mangini from the New York Jets in the trade that allowed New York to select Mark Sanchez in the first-round of the 2009 NFL Draft. He is a strong armed quarterback who is not afraid to challenge the edges of the defense. Last season he struggled to adjust to his new team, and now finds himself on the roster bubble. The Browns may try to sneak him through to the practice squad if they don't want to carry four quarterbacks on their 53-man roster.

Browns | Ratliff will not start    Tue Nov 3, 12:29 PM

CBSSports.com reports Cleveland Browns head coach Eric Mangini said QB Brett Ratliff will not get a chance to start at quarterback, even though QBs Derek Anderson and Brady Quinn have both struggled this season.

Footballguys view: What is it going to take in Cleveland? Brady Quinn is a boring option at quarterback, and he's unwilling to take shots downfield. Brett Ratliff is a gunslinger, and if the Browns gave him an opportunity he might be able to develop his game further.

Browns | Ratliff not in line for shot at starting    Fri Oct 2, 10:18 AM

Tony Grossi, of the Cleveland Plain Dealer, reports Cleveland Browns head coach Eric Mangini said QB Brett Ratliff is not in line to get a start in the near future. Ratliff has been working mostly with the scout team and gets the least amount of snaps during practice since he is the No. 3 quarterback.

Footballguys view: Ratliff came to Cleveland from New York when the Browns traded their #5 overall pick, which the Jets used on QB Mark Sanchez. The gunslinger from Utah loves to take shots downfield, but must improve reading the defense. Never say never, and if Derek Anderson and Brady Quinn keep struggling we could see Ratliff in as the starter.

The Cleveland Browns have declared QB Brett Ratliff, WR Brian Robiskie, OG Floyd Womack, CB Gerard Lawson, TE Greg Estandia, C Hank Fraley, RB Jamal Lewis, PK Phil Dawson inactive for Week 3.

Footballguys view: Jamal Lewis is down as expected. Jerome Harrison was taking reps with the first team and will start, but James Davis should get a long look as well. Neither are great fantasy plays against a stout Raven defense. Billy Cundiff replaces Dawson this week.

Browns | QB Ratliff making a strong impression    Wed Aug 12, 08:17 PM

The Cleveland Plain Dealer is reports that nobody's saying, for now, that the Cleveland Browns starting quarterback competition includes anyone besides Derek Anderson and Brady Quinn. Presumed third-stringer Brett Ratliff, though, is the current rage. He's having a fine training camp, excelled in Sunday's scrimmage and has the admiration of coach Eric Mangini, who has nurtured Ratliff through his young professional career.

Footballguys view: While Quinn and Anderson continue to struggle, Brett Ratliff moves the offense - even when going against the first string defense. He is a dark horse to win this competition, but Eric Mangini brought Ratliff over from the Jets in the trade that allowed New York to select Mark Sanchez. Ratliff is a young gunslinger that looked fantastic in last year's preseason. He has a very strong arm and loves to challenge a defense deep. When Ratliff does throw a bad pass he shows good short-term memory and comes back swinging - he doesn't get down on himself like other quarterbacks. He most likely won't win the starting job in week one, but remember the name Brett Ratliff if the the Browns QB struggles continue into the regular season.

Browns | Harrell leaves without contract    Tue May 5, 09:11 AM

Mary Kay Cabot, of the Cleveland Plain Dealer, reports the Cleveland Browns were impressed with undrafted free-agent QB Graham Harrell (Texas Tech) and might like to add him to the roster in the future, a source said. The offensive staff felt Harrell, who participated in the team's rookie camp on a tryout basis, picked up the system quickly and has great potential. However, the Browns let him leave town without a contract, in part because it currently has four quarterbacks on the roster: QB Brady Quinn, QB Derek Anderson, QB Brett Ratliff and QB Richard Bartel.

Footballguys view: I wonder what Texas Tech Head Coach Mike Leach will have to say about this. Leach blasted Eric Mangini in the media because he thought the Browns head coach had leaked a negative story about Tech WR Michael Crabtree which led to him falling down draft boards. All 4 of the QBs on the Browns roster are much more talented than Harrell, and unless injuries strike it seems unlikely that he would make the active roster.
