Arizona Cardinals RB Chris Rainey is being released from the practice squad Thursday, Sept. 18. Rainey has a history of domestic violence, according to sources.

Footballguys view: Rainey wasn't likely to have a huge impact, but this is interesting from the standpoint that it tells you how the wind is blowing in the NFL. Teams without headaches don't want to add potential ones.

Colts | Chris Rainey cut    Mon Jul 28, 08:49 AM

The Indianapolis Colts released RB Chris Rainey.

Footballguys view: The Colts just lost running back Vick Ballard and Rainey had earned praise from head coach Chuck Pagano, so this is curious. Rainey was a character risk going back to his days at Florida, so an off the field issue could be the cause of this sudden release.

Steelers | Running game goes nowhere in Week 12    Sun Nov 25, 08:59 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers RB Jonathan Dwyer led the team with nine carries and 19 yards in Week 12 against the Cleveland Browns, and he also lost a fumble. RB Chris Rainey carried five times for 17 yards, and added four catches for 15 yards, but too lost a fumble. RB Isaac Redman got in on the fumble parade, losing one, and he finished with two carries for seven yards while added one catch for 15 yards. RB Rashard Mendenhall had four totes for just six yards, and he fumbled twice, losing one.

Footballguys view: The Steelers backfield had three straight 100-yard games just a few weeks ago, but now it is disintegrating. They'll try to find a mix that works against the Ravens next week to exploit the weakness in that defense.

Pittsburgh Steelers RB Jonathan Dwyer (quadriceps), RB Chris Rainey (ribs) and K Shaun Suisham (ankle) practiced Friday, Nov. 9.

Steelers | Rashard Mendenhall, Isaac Redman injured    Fri Oct 12, 12:58 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers RB Rashard Mendenhall (Achilles') left the team's Week 6 game early Thursday, Oct. 11, with an Achilles' injury and did not return. RB Isaac Redman (ankle) also injured his ankle, forcing RB Baron Batch to enter. Batch scored a one-yard touchdown in the loss, and RB Chris Rainey was also worked into the rotation.

Footballguys view: Batch wasn't all that impressive in relief of the Steelers big backs, and Jonathan Dwyer was a healthy scratch. The Steelers running game rebirth in week 5 might have been a one-week wonder.

RB Baron Batch carried four times for 12 yards, and RB Chris Rainey added two totes for seven yards, while added two catches for 23 yards. RB Jonathan Dwyer also had four total touches, but he managed zero yards.

Footballguys view: Rashard Mendenhall should be back after the bye, but he probably won't be that much more effective than Redman and Dwyer.

Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin indicated Tuesday, Sept. 4, that RB Chris Rainey will get an opportunity on both punt and kickoff returns.

Steelers | Chris Rainey will have a role on offense    Thu Aug 30, 10:20 AM

Pittsburgh Steelers RB Chris Rainey will be used as a situational player in the regular season.

Footballguys view: Rainey is listed as a RB but is built and can play more like a slot WR. He's blazing fast and that speed will be featured in certain situations. Rainey has some Percy Harvin to his game in the open field and is a threat to score every time he touches the ball.

Pittsburgh Steelers RB Chris Rainey (head) left the preseason game Sunday, Aug. 19, against the Indianapolis Colts due to a head injury. He was evaluated for a concussion, passed the tests, and was able to return to the game.

Footballguys view: Rainey is not a big guy so durability is always going to be a concern. He's super fast and built more like a slot WR than a RB.

Steelers | Chris Rainey will be used as returner again    Sat Aug 18, 01:20 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers RB Chris Rainey will get a majority of the kick and punt returns during the early part of the preseason game Sunday, Aug. 19. WRs David Gilreath and Marquis Maze will also be used as returners during the game.

Footballguys view: Rainey is incredibly fast and elusive in the open field. He's listed as a RB but plays more like a slot WR. He'll help the team as a runner, receiver, and return man.

Steelers | Chris Rainey has good chance to make team    Mon Aug 13, 01:49 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers RB Chris Rainey has a good chance to make the final roster. Rainey likely would be used as a returner in addition to a role in the offense.

Footballguys view: Rainey is listed as a Running Back, but he's built more like (and plays more like) a slot Wide Receiver. He is incredibly fast and is dangerous in the open field. Rainey is a big play waiting to happen and a threat to score every time he touches the ball.

Steelers | Chris Rainey signed    Sun May 6, 01:40 PM

The Pittsburgh Steelers have signed fifth-round draft choice RB Chris Rainey to a four-year deal. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: Rainey is listed as a RB but he really plays more like a slot WR. He's extremely fast and dangerous in open space. We expect the Steelers to use him primarily as a receiving back. He's a threat to score every time he touches the football.

Patriots | Worked out Chris Rainey    Thu Apr 12, 05:13 PM

The New England Patriots conducted a private workout with University of Florida RB Chris Rainey.

Footballguys view: Rainey is listed as a RB but he is built more like a slot receiver. He's lightning fast and extremely quick in and out of his breaks. Rainey is not someone who can carry the load for a team but as a part time weapon and return man he could be very dangerous at the next level.

Patriots | Expected to look for returner in draft    Sun Apr 8, 01:42 PM

The New England Patriots are expected to take a kick returner at some point during the 2012 NFL Draft. University of Florida RB Chris Rainey, University of Arkansas WR Joe Adams, Fresno State WR Devon Wylie and Syracuse WR Dorian Graham could be options during the draft.

Footballguys view: All of those players would be good options for the Patriots at various points during the NFL Draft. We like Wylie the best out of the group because he is a very dangerous WR as well.

NFL | Chris Rainey shows speed at Pro Day    Sat Mar 24, 01:22 PM

University of Florida RB Chris Rainey measured 5-foot-8 3/4, 180 pounds at his Pro Day. He ran the 40-yard dash in 4.41 seconds and 4.35 seconds and the short shuttle in 4.10 seconds. Rainey also took part in wide receiver drills during the workout.

Footballguys view: Rainey is one of the fastest players in the 2012 Draft class. He's listed as a RB but plays more like a slot receiver. Some of our Footballguys staff was very impressed with him in WR drills at the Senior Bowl in Mobile, AL earlier this year.

NFL | Chris Rainey has lofty goals for Combine    Sun Jan 29, 08:51 PM

Florida RB Chris Rainey is raw, fast and unpredictable, expected to see time at wide receiver, running back and in the return game, similar to Minnesota Vikings WR Percy Harvin, also a former Florida player. 'Running back's going to always be my favorite position,' Rainey said, but he added, 'Wherever they put me, I'm ready. Don't care as long as I help the team win.' Rainey plans to run at the NFL Scouting Combine and says he wants to post a 4.1-second time in the 40-yard dash.

NFL | Chris Rainey gets just one touch at Senior Bowl    Sat Jan 28, 09:06 PM

Florida RB Chris Rainey had one carry for five yards and no receptions for the South squad at the Senior Bowl Saturday, Jan. 28. Rainey did make his presence felt in the return game, posting 60 yards on three kickoff returns, and 17 yards on one punt return.

Footballguys view: Rainey's speed was an eyebrow-raiser during the week in Mobile, including as a wide receiver. He should be very attractive as a field stretcher and could be an instant impact rookie.

Redskins | Impressed with Chris Rainey     Wed Jan 25, 08:36 AM

Washington Redskins head coach Mike Shanahan said he has been impressed with Florida RB Chris Rainey at the Senior Bowl. 'I'm just impressed with the way he's handling himself the first couple of days,' Shanahan said. 'He's picked things up very quickly. You're never really sure how people adapt to a system. And I'm not his agent, but I do want a little piece of the action.'

Footballguys view: Rainey isn't a RB even though he's listed as one on the roster. He should be a fast slot WR at the next level. He has incredible speed and could run a 4.2 at the Scouting Combine later this year.

Dolphins | Interview Chris Rainey    Tue Jan 24, 03:38 PM

The Miami Dolphins interviewed Florida RB Chris Rainey this week at the Senior Bowl as they search for ways to improve their depth at running back.

Footballguys view: Rainey is listed as a RB, but should actually be moved to WR in the pros. He's very small, but a good weapon as a receiver. Rainey showed the ability to catch passes downfield today in practice.
