Jets | Bilal Powell finished with Gang Green?    Sat May 23, 10:57 PM

Free-agent RB Bilal Powell's (Jets) chances of re-signing with the New York Jets likely ended when RB Frank Gore was signed, according to Gregg Rosenthal of NFL.com.

Footballguys view: That's no surprise. Powell is a veteran back who can contribute as a runner or receiver out of the backfield. We'll see if he can latch on with a new team around training camp.

Jets | Bilal Powell hopes to return    Fri Jan 31, 05:18 PM

New York Jets impending free-agent RB Bilal Powell said he hopes to re-sign with the Jets this offseason and received positive feedback from the team during his exit meeting.

Footballguys view: Powell is still a competent backup, but not more at this point in his career. With another infusion of talent at running back via the draft, it will be more difficult for him to find a job. The Jets could revamp their backfield this offseason if they find a taker for LeVeon Bell in the trade market.

Jets | Week 17 final stats for Jets    Sun Dec 29, 04:42 PM

New York Jets QB Sam Darnold completed 23-of-36 passes for 199 yards, one touchdowns and one interception in Week 17 against the Buffalo Bills. RB Le'Veon Bell rushed 16 times for a team-high 41 yards with five grabs for 36 yards on five targets, while RB Bilal Powell added seven runs for 27 yards. WR Jamison Crowder led the way with eight catches for a team-high 66 yards and a touchdown on 10 targets, while WR Robby Anderson finished his season with three grabs for 18 yards on seven targets.

Footballguys view: Bell may be one-and-done with the Jets if they can find a trade partner. Anderson is almost certain to leave in free agency, while Crowder has been a reasonable success as a late round fantasy pick with inconsistent peaks and valleys. The Jets will have a very different looking offense under Adam Gase next year.

Jets | NY Jets' Week 16 injury report    Fri Dec 20, 04:13 PM

New York Jets OL Tom Compton (calf) and WR Demaryius Thomas (hamstring, knee) did not practice all week and are listed as doubtful for Week 16 against the Pittsburgh Steelers. S Jamal Adams (ankle), DL Henry Anderson (shoulder), OT Kelvin Beachum (ankles), CB Arthur Maulet (calf), DL Steve McLendon (knee, hip), CB Brian Poole (concussion), RB Bilal Powell (ankle) and DL Quinnen Williams (neck) were limited in practice all week and are listed as questionable. WR Robby Anderson (illness) was upgraded to a limited practice Friday, Dec. 20, and is also listed as questionable. LB B.J. Bello (illness), S Bennett Jackson (illness), CB Maurice Canady (shoulder), QB Sam Darnold (knee, thumb), QB David Fales (elbow), DL Kyle Phillips (hip), OL Brent Qvale (knee), DL Nathan Shepherd (rib, ankle) and S Blake Countess (ankle) practiced in full Friday and no longer appear on the injury report.

Footballguys view: Adams return is a big boost for the Jets and should make life harder for Devlin Hodges. Expect the Jets to dial up a lot of blitzes against the Steelers after that approach worked for the Bills last week.

Jets | Bilal Powell handles bigger workload    Sun Dec 8, 07:37 PM

New York Jets RB Bilal Powell ran 19 times for 74 yards in Week 14 against the Miami Dolphins and he added two receptions for 14 yards on three targets.

Footballguys view: Powell was adequate in place of LeVeon Bell but no scores and minimal passing game contributions kept his impact diluted in fantasy playoff matchups today if you were forced to plug him in.

Jets | Sam Darnold happy to have Bilal Powell back    Sun Jun 9, 04:59 PM

New York Jets QB Sam Darnold spoke glowingly of his team's re-signing of RB Bilal Powell this past week. 'Great to have BP back,' Darnold said. 'Can't wait to get to work with him. I haven't seen him in a while, so it's going to be nice to be able to see him. I know BP is a great guy and obviously a great player, so it's great to have him back.'

Footballguys view: Powell will be a familiar face in the backfield for Darnold at times this year if he makes the team. and he might be the only back from the 2018 roster to make the team. It's also good to see Darnold making "leadership" quotes about his teammates.

Jets | Bilal Powell back with NYJ    Fri Jun 7, 07:04 PM

Free-agent RB Bilal Powell (Jets) agreed to terms with the New York Jets Friday, June 7. Terms of the contract were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: Powell should be the #2 back, and it's not great news for Le'Veon Bell, but probably not bad news either. We still have a track record of unpredictable backfield usage from Jets coach Adam Gase, so this development adds another element that could frustrate us during the season if he is anything more than a few touch a game player.

NFL | Bilal Powell cleared from injury    Wed May 8, 09:13 AM

Free-agent RB Bilal Powell (neck) was fully cleared from a neck injury that was once thought to threaten his career.

Footballguys view: Good news for the veteran back here. Powell only made it through 7 games last season with the Jets. They've completely moved on with a revamped RB corps led by Le'Veon Bell, so Powell is unlikely to go back to the Jets. We'll see teams take a look at him and examine his neck injury carefully. Some team will need veteran depth at some point later this offseason.

Jets | Bilal Powell not returning to NYJ?    Fri Apr 12, 10:30 PM

Free-agent RB Bilal Powell (Jets) doesn't appear likely to be re-signed by the New York Jets, according to Brian Costello of the New York Post.

Footballguys view: Absolutely zero surprise here. The Jets have Le'Veon Bell as their top running back, and they just added Ty Montgomery as a pass-catching back earlier this week. Add in guys like Eli McGuire, Trenton Cannon and De'Angelo Henderson and you can clearly see there's no room for Powell anymore. We'll see if the veteran can latch on with a team later in the offseason.

Jets | Tevin Coleman a target for NYJ?    Sat Feb 9, 09:18 PM

Atlanta Falcons impending free-agent RB Tevin Coleman could be signed by the New York Jets to lead their backfield in 2019, according to Rich Cimini of ESPNNewYork.com.

Footballguys view: The Jets should be in the market for RB help via free agency. They may cut RB Isaiah Crowell and not pursue impending free-agent RB Bilal Powell. That leaves Eli McGuire and Trenton Cannon in their backfield to be change-of-pace backs. Coleman is an option, but we think C.J. Anderson might be on their list too.

Jets | Bilal Powell expected to depart    Thu Feb 7, 01:26 AM

New York Jets RB Bilal Powell's 'days with the Jets are probably over,' according to ESPN's Rich Cimini, who believes the team will turn to RB Elijah McGuire as their No. 2 back and allow Powell to sign elsewhere in free agency.

Footballguys view: McGuire can be a no.2 back but the Jets need to find a starter. That may come through the draft in the mid rounds or they may make a move in free agency. New Jets head coach loves C.J. Anderson (Rams) and that may be an option this offseason.

Jets | Bilal Powell should play again    Thu Oct 25, 02:31 PM

New York Jets RB Bilal Powell (neck) should be able to play against once he recovers from his neck injury, according to head coach Todd Bowles.

Footballguys view: Just yesterday Bowles said this injury could be career threatening. Either way we know Powell won't be back with the Jets this year. A fourth-round pick of the Jets in 2011, Powell is set to hit the open market in 2019.

Jets | Bilal Powell's career in jeopardy    Wed Oct 24, 05:00 PM

Updating a previous report, New York Jets RB Bilal Powell (neck) will have surgery on his injured neck.

Footballguys view: The injury will not only end Powell's season, but could threaten his career, according to head coach Todd Bowles. Neck injuries have ended the careers of great players in NFL history like Eric Dickerson or Sterling Sharpe. They are tricky to deal with and difficult to come back from. We're hoping Powell can get back to full strength but it will be a long journey back to the football field if at all possible.

Jets | Bilal Powell to IR    Wed Oct 24, 10:25 AM

New York Jets RB Bilal Powell (neck) was placed on the Reserve/Injured list Wednesday, Oct. 24.

Footballguys view: Neck injuries are tricky to deal with and cumbersome to come back from. The Jets now move forward with Trenton Cannon as the change-of-pace back behind Isaiah Crowell. They also should be getting Elijah McGuire back from the foot injury that had him on IR to begin the season.

Jets | Bilal Powell injures neck    Sun Oct 21, 03:09 PM

New York Jets RB Bilal Powell (neck) suffered a neck injury during the Week 7 game and will not return.

Footballguys view: Isaiah Crowell has another tough matchup against the Bears next week, but neck injuries can be delicate so he might start for more than just one fill-in week. Elijah McGuire is getting healthy and should take over a role in this offense if Powell is out for a while.

Jets | Bilal Powell flirts with century mark    Sun Oct 7, 07:41 PM

New York Jets RB Bilal Powell rushed 20 times for 99 yards in Week 5 against the Denver Broncos.

New York Jets RB Bilal Powell carried the ball 14 times for 73 yards (5.2 YPC) against the Cleveland Browns on Thursday, Sept. 20.

Footballguys view: Powell looks like the better running back for the Jets, but if he's going to be startable in fantasy leagues, he needs to be more involved in the passing game. He should get a chance to do that against the stout Jaguars defense next week.

Jets | Bilal Powell has monster game    Sun Dec 24, 05:47 PM

New York Jets RB Bilal Powell rushed for 145 yards and one touchdown on 19 carries against the Los Angeles Chargers in Week 16.

Footballguys view: Powell was a Week 16 stud against the odds of playing in three-way backfield against the Chargers. The coaching staff doesn't seem to favor Powell, but this is the second straight year that he has had big plays and production in more than one game when he actually got the opportunity. The Jets may not choose to keep the 29-year-old at a price of four million dollars.

RB Matt Forte (knee) did not practice, either, and he is listed as questionable, while LB Demario Davis (non-injury related) did not practice and is off the report.   Jets | Bilal Powell with prime matchup    Tue Dec 5, 11:26 AM

New York Jets RB Bilal Powell has a great matchup against the Denver Broncos in Week 14.

Footballguys view: Watch to see how Matt Forte (knee) progresses through the week of practice. The Jets are on the road this week, but the Broncos defense is reeling after starting off the season strong against the run. The Broncos have allowed the second-most points per game to running backs over the last five weeks.

New York Jets RB Bilal Powell rushed for 30 yards on 10 carries against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Week 10. He also caught one pass for six yards during the game.

Footballguys view: Powell split the work in the backfield almost equally with Elijah McGuire after being more of the lead back when Matt Forte was out over the last two years. Forte could miss time after the bye, but Powell no longer looks like the must start or even the obviously more valuable Jets running back.
