Bears | Leonard Pope turns heads    Tue Aug 6, 12:20 AM

Chicago Bears TE Leonard Pope impressed head coach Marc Trestman with a solid showing as a blocked during inside drills against the defensive linemen. 'I watched him out there today catching the ball. Certainly what we see is clear. We see a big man,' Trestman said Monday, Aug. 5.

Footballguys view: Pope has little fantasy value as he should primarily be used as a blocker with the Bears. Martellus Bennett will be their primary move TE and could finish the year as a top 10 fantasy TE. His current ADP is TE13 and he's coming off the board at 11.04.

Bears | Leonard Pope signed    Sat Aug 3, 11:05 AM

The Chicago Bears have signed free-agent TE Leonard Pope (Steelers) to a one-year deal. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: The Bears needed some veteran depth behind Martellus Bennett. Pope gives them that but fantasy owners need to realize he's only on board to be a blocker.

Chiefs | May try to add another tight end    Sun Sep 4, 02:37 AM

The Kansas City Chiefs have Leonard Pope, Anthony Becht and Jake O'Connell at tight end following the loss of TE Tony Moeaki (knee) for the season. However, all three are blockers and not pass-catching threats. The Chiefs may seek out a pass-catching option at the position, but it will be difficult to find someone capable of replacing Moeaki in the offense because of his versatility.

Chiefs | Loss of Tony Moeaki hurts offense    Sat Sep 3, 04:18 PM

If the Kansas City Chiefs do indeed lose second-year TE Tony Moeaki (knee) for the season, it will be a devastating blow to the offense. Moeaki was a favorite target last year of QB Matt Cassel and the Chiefs do not have another reliable pass-catcher at the position on roster. Moeaki hauled in 47 passes as a rookie. The Chiefs would likely be forced to start TE Leonard Pope and likely need to find additional help to the position elsewhere.

Cardinals | No tight ends stepping up    Tue Aug 18, 08:52 PM

Bob Baum, of The Associated Press, reports five tight ends - Anthony Becht, Dominique Byrd, Ben Patrick, Leonard Pope and Stephen Spach - are battling for the Arizona Cardinals starting tight end position, but no one is distancing himself from the pack so far. The team would like to see someone emerge, but they may have to handle it through a committee approach.

Cardinals | Could use committee at tight end    Sun Aug 9, 10:54 PM

Kent Somers, of The Arizona Republic, reports the Arizona Cardinals could use a committee at their tight end position, with starts and playing time dictated by game plans and opponents. Tight ends coach Freddie Kitchens said TEs Stephen Spach, Ben Patrick, Leonard Pope, Anthony Becht and Dominique Byrd all bring "something different to the table."

Footballguys view: Just another reason to keep avoiding Cardinals tight ends for your fantasy teams.

Cardinals | Spach questionable for start of season    Fri Jul 24, 07:34 PM

Kent Somers, of the Arizona Republic, reports that Cardinals TE Stephen Spach is questionable for the start of the season, as he is recovering from ACL and MCL surgery.

Footballguys view: This opens the door for Rams cast-off Dominique Byrd to make the opening day roster. Byrd was a talented pass-catcher at USC, and there could be more of a role for a pass-catching TE in the offense, now that the team will be running less three WR sets.

Cardinals | Competition for No. 1 tight end job    Mon May 4, 10:12 AM

Bob McManaman, of The Arizona Republic, reports Arizona Cardinals head coach Ken Whisenhunt said during the team's three-day minicamp that there will be competition for the team's starting tight end spot. 'There's going to be a lot of competition with that group this year, I'm sure of it,' Whisenhunt said. 'We like what we have. I liked what we had last year, too, but we were dealing with a lot of injuries there. It'll be interesting to see how things develop moving forward.' TE Ben Patrick, TE Leonard Pope, TE Stephen Spach, TE Alex Schor and TE Anthony Becht are the five tight ends on the roster.

Footballguys view: The Cardinals are a pass happy team - but it hasn't translated into big time fantasy stats for their TEs. In fact, no Arizona TE caught a touchdown in 2008. Ben Patrick has a chance to be a productive player in this system as he's the most natural receiver in the group, but don't forget about Stephen Spach. He made some key grabs for the Cardinals down the stretch in the playoffs and could see an expanded role this year if he can make it back from his ACL/MCL injury.
