San Francisco 49ers QB Christian Ponder has 'support' in locker room and 'is considered the best option for quarterback on the roster', according to at least one source.

49ers | San Francisco nabs Christian Ponder Tue Aug 16, 04:26 PM
Free-agent QB Christian Ponder (Broncos) was signed to a one-year deal by the San Francisco 49ers Tuesday, Aug. 16.
Footballguys view: The 49ers needed to do something here. Colin Kaepernick has had trouble returning from three offseason surgeries, and backup Thad Lewis is out of the year after suffering a knee injury. That leaves rookie Jeff Driskel as the lone backup behind starter Blaine Gabbert. Ponder gives them veteran insurance in case Kaepernick isn't healthy and Driskel isn't ready. |

Raiders | Chances of a Matt McGloin trade? Sat Jun 27, 04:49 PM
Bill Williamson, from ESPN.com, speculates that QB Matt McGloin could be traded later this year. If the Raiders are happy with Christian Ponder as the primary backup behind Derek Carr, then perhaps McGloin could be on the trade block.
Footballguys view: If McGloin is put on the trade block, then we'd expect the Houston Texans to show interest. McGloin was Bill O'Brien's quarterback when the two were at Penn State. The Texans have arguably the worst quarterback situation in the league, and McGloin could be seen as an upgrade. |

Minnesota Vikings QB Christian Ponder completed 22 of his 44 pass attempts and threw two interceptions and no touchdowns in the team's Week 5 loss to the Green Bay Packers. He rushed three times for 15 yards and a touchdown and was sacked six times.

Vikings | Teddy Bridgewater remains hopeful Tue Sep 30, 04:13 PM
Minnesota Vikings QB Teddy Bridgewater (ankle) is feeling 'much better' Tuesday, Sept. 30, and head coach Mike Zimmer remains hopeful that Bridgewater can play in Week 5 against the Green Bay Packers Thursday, Oct. 2. If Bridgewater is going to throw and push off his left foot, he'll likely do so during a walk-through Wednesday, Oct. 1.
Footballguys view: If this wasn't a short week, we'd be more hopeful about Bridgewater's availability. The Vikings play on Thursday night against the Packers, and we might not see the rookie quarterback under center after his impressive start in Week 4. QB Christian Ponder would make his first start of the year if Bridgewater doesn't play. |

Vikings | Christian Ponder saves job? Fri Aug 29, 09:22 PM
Minnesota Vikings QB Christian Ponder had a solid training camp and likely saved his job with significant work and production in the preseason finale.

Vikings | Teddy Bridgewater at No. 2 Fri Aug 22, 10:33 AM
Minnesota Vikings QB Teddy Bridgewater is entrenched as the No. 2 quarterback, and the team is confident with him there. QB Christian Ponder could be traded if he performs well enough.
Footballguys view: Bridgewater will be starting soon enough in Minnesota. We're excited about Bridgewater's upside because he's smart and accurate. When Bridgewater is the starter, we could see a bump for the entire passing game. Matt Cassel could begin the season as the starter, but we doubt he holds onto the job for the whole year. |

Vikings | QBs splitting reps Mon Jul 28, 01:12 PM
Minnesota Vikings QBs Matt Cassel, Teddy Bridgewater and Christian Ponder have been evenly splitting reps during the early part of training camp, according to offensive coordinator Norv Turner. Turner will split the reps two ways after the team's upcoming off day.
Footballguys view: Ponder is obviously the QB who will drop out of this race soon. Bridgewater is a star student and hard-working, so he might push Cassel more than observers expect him to. The Vikings should have a truly open competition and not give Cassel any "veteran" advantage because he has been so mediocre in the past. The Seahawks weren't afraid to crown a rookie in an open camp QB competition, and it has worked out for them. |

Vikings | Christian Ponder has done well Wed Jul 23, 11:17 PM
Minnesota Vikings QBs Teddy Bridgewater and Matt Cassel saw a majority of the snaps during spring workouts, but QB Christian Ponder has a chance to start, and head coach Mike Zimmer claims it will be a fair competition. 'Actually, I think Christian has done a very good job in the time that we've had him and how much he has improved in that amount of time,' Zimmer said. 'We're going to give everyone a fair shot, and preseason games will help determine it. We want someone who is going to take care of the football, lead the team in the right direction and when called upon be able to win football games.'
Footballguys view: We'll see if Ponder and Cassel can hold off rookie first-round pick Teddy Bridgewater to be the team's starter in 2014. Ponder is in a make-or-break season with the Vikings. If he doesn't get it done this year, the team will move on with Bridgewater as their quarterback of the future. Ponder has shown the ability to be a decent spot starter, but he's mostly a backup-caliber quarterback. |

Vikings | OC praises QBs Mon Jul 7, 01:06 PM
Minnesota Vikings offensive coordinator Norv Turner has been very happy with QBs Matt Cassel, Teddy Bridgewater and Christian Ponder heading up to training camp. 'We've got a really, really good group,' he said, explaining that it won't be hard to parcel out snaps in the apparent three-headed battle. Cassel is expected to be the starter, but Turner has praised Bridgewater for his arm strength and quick learning.
Footballguys view: The identity of the starter won't change outlooks that much because the Vikings won't force Bridgewater into the lineup. If they tab him to start, that means Bridgewater give the team the best chance to win in their eyes. Greg Jennings had great chemistry with Cassel last year, so perhaps he would take a small hit, but his ADP is already very undervalued for a receiver of his caliber. |

Vikings | QB competition wide open Tue Jun 17, 02:32 PM
The Minnesota Vikings' quarterback competition this offseason is a wide open battle between QBs Matt Cassel, Teddy Bridgewater and Christian Ponder, according to head coach Mike Zimmer. Offensive coordinator Norv Turner will plan on having all three passers see enough snaps in mandatory minicamp to make sure that they all have a 'legitimate opportunity' to win the starting job in training camp next month. Zimmer won't rush into a decision, and he made it clear that Cassel won't enter camp as the presumptive starter. Both Cassel and Bridgewater had more snaps than Ponder during organized team activities, and both looked sharper than Ponder.
Footballguys view: Bridgewater should win any close calls, but the definition of a close call may depend on how ready the Vikings are to start him. He is a better passer than either of his opponents, and he is going to excel on short and intermediate passes in accuracy and timing. We would give him a better chance to win this job than most would, but it is still going to be hard for him to have fantasy relevance without a great running component to his fantasy stats. |

Vikings | Not likely to release Christian Ponder but may trade him Mon Jun 16, 02:44 AM
Minnesota Vikings QB Christian Ponder will likely not be released by the team, but the Vikings may try and trade the quarterback before camp starts. The team recognizes it would get only a late-round draft pick, but it could save $1.8 million just by trading him.
Footballguys view: Trade him for what? Ponder would draw little interest if he was on the trade block, especially if teams are expecting him to be released. Perhaps someone would take a shot on Ponder as a backup, but we don't think teams will be falling all over themselves to add the veteran QB. |
Christian Ponder player page
Vikings | All QBs will get chance to work with first-teamers Sun May 25, 03:04 PM
Minnesota Vikings QBs Teddy Bridgewater, Matt Cassel and Christian Ponder will all get an opportunity to work with the first-teamers this offseason but the team would like to enter training camp with an established depth chart.
Footballguys view: This is going to be an interesting battle to watch develop through OTAs and training camp. Even if he doesn't win the job at the start of the season, we expect Bridgewater to lead the team at some point. He's smart and accurate, so Bridgewater should be able to impress early on. |
