The Rams have also terminated the contracts of WR Tim Carter and FS Todd Johnson.

Footballguys view: Sam Gado ends his impressive preseason as the backup to Steven Jackson, and both Antonio Pittman and seventh-round Chris Ogbonnaya are looking for work.

Rams | Gado passes Darby on the depth chart    Mon Aug 17, 02:47 PM

Bill Coats, from the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, reports RB Samkon Gado, who had a big game vs. the Jets, took some snaps with the No. 1 offense. Antonio Pittman, who also had a nice outing Friday, and Gado shared second-team reps. Kenneth Darby, who struggled in the preseason opener, spent most of his time with the third unit.

Footballguys view: Darby had a forgettable game against the Jets, but Gado busted off a 77-yard touchdown run. Steven Jackson owners will have to wait until the end of preseason for a clear backup to emerge, but we don't advise wasting a roster spot on any of these players.

Rams | A. Pittman, Darby top candidates for backup job    Thu Jun 11, 12:53 PM

Bill Coats, of St. Louis Post-Dispatch, reports St. Louis Rams RB Antonio Pittman and RB Kenneth Darby are the top candidate for the team's primary backup running back job.

Footballguys view: The Rams traded RB/FB Brian Leonard to the Bengals so that leaves Darby and Pittman as the primary backups to RB Steven Jackson. Coach Steve Spagnuolo likes what he sees so far. "I think both of the guys are picking up the system pretty well. ... I think both add certain things. I'm real anxious to see the competition when they put the pads on." Pittman is a slashing RB that does most of his damage between the tackles, but he does have deceptive speed when he gets to the open field. Darby runs hard, consistently picks up yards after contact, and is a good receiver out of the backfield. This competition won't be decided until the end of training camp.

Rams | S. Jackson impressed with backup backs    Fri Jun 5, 01:17 PM

St. Louis Rams RB Steven Jackson said he has been impressed with backup RBs Kenneth Darby and Antonio Pittman.

Footballguys view: 'I think all the guys are able to run routes and it really allows us to set up different matchups. We can go two backs on the field sometimes,' Jackson said. Antonio Pittman was rated as high as the #2 RB by some in the scouting community when he came out of college in 2007. While not the biggest runner he has deceptive strength between the tackles and has the agility and balance to run through arm tackles consistently. Kenneth Darby is an efficient runner that has good instincts and the quick burst to get through small holes. Both Darby and Pittman started their careers elsewhere but so far they've been fairly impressive during their time in St. Louis. The Rams want a run-heavy offense in 2009 featuring Steven Jackson, and his backup could see spot duty when Jackson needs a breather.
