Panthers | Eight players cut    Sun Aug 24, 02:37 PM

The Carolina Panthers have released P Jordan Gay, DL Linden Gaydosh, DL Alex Hall, OL Oscar Johnson, LB Anthony Morales, WR Marvin McNutt, WR Kealoha Pilares and DL Craig Roh.

Footballguys view: McNutt might be able to find a spot on a practice squad somewhere. He's a big, physical receiver who can work as a red-zone threat. It's not a good sign that he couldn't make a WR-needy Panthers roster.

Panthers | Wide receiver notes    Thu Jun 13, 01:25 PM

Carolina Panthers WRs Steve Smith and Brandon LaFell are locked in at the top two spots. Ted Ginn Jr. has stood out during minicamp, catching several deep passes from Cam Newton. Armanti Edwards looks more comfortable playing the position. Ginn and Edwards will compete with Kealoha Pilares, Joe Adams and David Gettis for roster spots and reps.

Footballguys view: Smith should be the star receiver he's been for years in 2013. His current ADP is WR28 (6.08) which makes him a good value. The bigger question mark is LaFell. He's got the size/speed combination to be an effective pro but has lacked consistency to his game. LaFell's current ADP is WR69 and he's coming off the board at 14.10 in 12 team PPR leagues.

Carolina Panthers WR David Gettis (hamstring) could be activated from the Physically Unable to Perform list Tuesday, Nov. 6, and it may depend on the health of WR Kealoha Pilares (shoulder).

Footballguys view: Getting Gettis back could help the WR corps. We like his size, hands, and concentration. We'll see if Gettis can practice this week and play on Sunday against the Broncos.

Panthers | Brandon LaFell injury update    Fri Nov 2, 08:31 PM

Carolina Panthers head coach Ron Rivera said the team was hoping WR Brandon LaFell (concussion) could go through some work Friday, Nov. 2, but he didn't work out as the team had hoped. LaFell is listed as doubtful for Week 9 against the Washington Redskins. 'It doesn't (look good for LaFell),' Rivera said. 'We'll see how he is tomorrow, and then we'll go from there.'

Footballguys view: Without LaFell in the lineup it will mean more targets for WR Steve Smith and TE Greg Olsen. Could be a big day for the Panthers passing game against the 32nd rank Redskins pass defense.

Panthers | Make or break year for Armanti Edwards    Wed Aug 1, 10:41 PM

Carolina Panthers WR Armanti Edwards is trying to stick with the team for a third season, and this training camp might be a make-or-break situation. It was telling when QB Cam Newton mentioned the No. 2 receiver battle, he did not mention Edwards. 'It's an intriguing competition at that (No. 2) position. We're expecting a lot from (WR Brandon LaFell), (WR Seyi Ajirotutu), (WR Kealoha Pilares), in addition to (WR Louis Murphy).'

Carolina Panthers WR Kealoha Pilares was tabbed as the team's kick returner last month to see what he can do. However, in Week 10 against the Tennessee Titans, he went back for seven kickoffs and all resulted in a catch deep in the end zone or touchback through the back of the end zone. 'Almost every one's getting kicked out of the end zone,' Pilares said Tuesday, Nov. 15. 'You've just got to focus more (because) you never know when you're going to return a kick.'

Panthers | Kealoha Pilares not headed to IR    Fri Sep 2, 09:59 AM

Carolina Panthers general manager Marty Hurney said he doesn't expect that WR Kealoha Pilares (ankle) will have to go on Injured Reserve. He is out four to six weeks with a high ankle sprain, although Pilares thinks he'll be ready before that.

Footballguys view: This is a good sign that the Panthers think the rookie can contribute this year. Pilares won't put up great numbers as the slot receiver in an offense with a rookie QB, but he does have value in deep PPR leagues.
